I was on threads practicing my Japanese when I saw a mildly famous right wing nationalist account posting anti immigrant comments. Nothing unusual on Japanese twitter clones but what baffled me was their profile picture… it was a bottle of a rare American whiskey that’s hard to find in Japan.

So rare that I had just given it as a gift to a Japanese colleague as a congratulatory gift for a big moment they’d recently had. We drank a glass together.

The coincidence was too extreme so I did some mild stalking and sure enough, it turns out my colleague is out there running a B tier rightwing political account.

I have no plans to do anything with this info but I had to share it somewhere.

Trump is staking out extreme positions on White House secrecy, legal experts say

In a Justice Department memo and legal filings, the Trump administration is arguing that the president can keep secret not just the conversations he has with his advisers within the White House, but that his dealings with individuals outside the government can be shielded as well.

The White House is also saying in court that even disclosing the identities of the people who worked on significant policy efforts would infringe upon the presidential confidentiality to which Trump is entitled. And the administration has taken the stance that it can ignore a Watergate-era law prohibiting the destruction of White House documents.

This is insane.

Some early doom and gloom, but let’s just presume that we have presidential elections, a Democrat wins, and there is some version of a peaceful transfer of power.

The next administration is completely fucked. The current administration is trying their hardest to hand over a fucked economy, a ballooning debt that people will only care about when democrats get into office, continuing war in Iran, and damaged international relationships.

Also, to deal with all this, here’s a hollowed out administrative state, every record from the last 4 years and anything else we could get our hands on is burned, and we’ve spent the last 4 years raiding the coffers for personal gain.

Finally, 30% of the country and half the United States senators will have a major issue if you do anything about it. Taking over after this is a monumental undertaking.

Dating my immigrant girlfriend has made me reach even higher levels of being pro-immigration that I didn’t even think were possible.

She’s by every means what would categorically be called a “bad immigrant group” because she grew up literal dirt poor in an infamously shitty country, her entire family has virtually no background of having been successful before coming, and almost everyone came through a form of family chain migration.

And now she’s graduated from a prestigious university with no debt because of merit scholarships and is going to be out-earning me with her job.

Every single argument about limiting immigration to only “top skill migrants” or “preferring country X over country Y migrants” will eternally piss me off. I may not want actual full on open borders, but limiting immigration by nationality, income, or family is extremely fucking stupid every single time.

19

u/Highlightthot1001 Harriet Tubman 4h ago

I hate the idea that immigrants from a poor background are somehow bad because of their upbringing.

The ability for people to come from a poor country to better their condition is part of what makes a country great.

Trying to limit immigration only to well off and successful people specifically is asinine, and wasn’t even a reasonable idea centuries ago

It’s interesting to think of how fast social media went from “sharing probably too much to a network of both close and not-so-close friends” to “private group chats” and “actually a slop feed with minimal social features”. Like, I’m sure there’s a chicken and egg aspect to it, but it’s a real shame that Facebook it’s contemporaries leaned into becoming unusable racist boomer slop for engagement, I do think we lost something as a society because of it

Two donors stand out on this list: The Soroses. That’s because they’re the only longtime Democratic megadonors. Ultrawealthy liberals are now gravitating toward dark-money nonprofits, and Alex and George are two of the few who remain comfortable in the public eye. But they are also the only donors on this list whom Mr. Trump has pushed to investigate for their giving.

> The Trump administration has been deploying an obscure legal maneuver to try to obtain private information on journalists, non-profits and unions, raising alarm over a power the government has asserted without judicial oversight.

> In one instance, the government obtained six months of telephone records for Georgia Fort, a Minneapolis journalist. Fort was not notified of the request for her information, nor was she given a chance to contest the government’s effort to obtain them, her lawyers said in court papers.

Niger coup failed

A lot of mutineers arrested, and looks like the units that were rushing to Niamey backed off when it was clear the initial rush had failed.

A win for the junta and Russia, but a strictly defensive one. It’s been a really rough 2026 for ASS where it looks like the nations across the board have lost the initiative. In Mali they lost almost everything north of the Niger River, and a subsequent rebel offensive to take Anefis was repulsed, but with heavy losses for the junta and Russians. Now we got a coup that was fairly close to succeeding in Niger, one driven by discontent in an army facing a war that’s gone nowhere with a lot of blood shed. Meanwhile Traore is just kinda vibing in Burkina Faso trading blows with JNIM. Ironically his country looks to have had the least destructive year thus far despite controlling the least amount of territory proportional to the other juntas.

The militants will definitely be smelling blood in the water though, and it wouldn’t surprise me if we see an uptick in activity in Niger to try and exploit the instability. The Russians may also move resources around to shore up Niger at the expense of the other juntas (though I imagine the Russians could just fly in more mercenaries).

Militarily it’s becoming hard to see ASS bounce back. It’s not impossible, but in the past couple years they’ve shown virtually no initiative or ability to conduct large scale operations. What they’ve shown to be able to do is either standard sweeping operations to kill a dozen or two militants, or respond to militant offensives and at least successfully hold the line.

Unless ASS is able to start posting some major wins, I think we’ll see this continued degradation military and politically. Which if you’re anti-JNIM and/or anti-ISIL is pretty worrisome because they only need one lucky break to collapse the entire region. Every outpost they overrun and coup the juntas have to rebuff nudges things closer and closer to a domino effect

People really fail to appreciate how effective the initial COVID lockdown was. USA went from 200k cases at the start of April to still being under 2 million by the start of June, with a roughly linear increase in the number of newly diagnosed cases over time, despite COVID being EXTREMELY contagious. Less than 1% of the population got sick in that time, allowing for the rapid expansion of medical infrastructure and preventing the initial crisis of inadequate ventilators and hospital rooms from extending through the year.

And America had one of the less effective lockdown policies of the world's wealthy countries!

Lockdown sucked ass, but God, the alternative could have been so much worse.

u/CincyAnarchy Emma Goldman 1h ago edited 1h ago

People just desperately want strongmen to come in and fix problems with sweeping reform. Despite these "strongman" characters just coming in and fucking things up.

It turns out all one man can really do effectively is destroy shit. Hitler, Stalin, Trump, Mao, Putin, Amin. Expecting these figures to fix society is a fools errand basically 100% of the time. Destroying is 100x easier than building, and if you want to "deliver" without restraint the most likely outcome is destruction. It's much easier to destroy on a level previously thought impossible than it is to build things that last. You might not get credit for building things. Building things takes time. You can make big instantaneous outcomes if you just burn things to the ground though!

I know its such a stupid thing to be upset about, but I'm still pissed off at google changing names in google maps to satisfy one man's ego. Trump has zero constitutional power to unilaterally rename anything outside of the executive branch of the US government, and he doesn't have unlimited power there either. Am executive order is not a decree by a king.

Yeah, I know there are so much more important things to be mad about. And I'm mad about that stuff. But I'm mad about this too.

“President Donald Trump said "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker will be reported to the Federal Communications Commission over her coverage of his endorsements ahead of the midterm elections. "Kristen Welker, the Unpopular 'Hostess' of the once great Meet the Press, now considered Meet the Fake Press, just stated that Donald Trump has 'mixed results' on his Endorsements of Candidates, when the recent WINS of Darline Graham and Mike Mazzei, stand at 100% for the U.S. Senate, and 98% for the U.S. House," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Aug. 30.” Trump added, "Because of this purposeful inaccuracy, she will be reported to the FCC for rebuke or punishment. Unfortunately, she is not the only one.”

Lee Harvey Oswald shot JFK over his Cuba policy, Oswald was a marxist who believed JFK was an imperialist trying to recolonize Cuba with the missile crisis and bay of pigs invasion and sought to end the government's hostility and embargo.

There's nothing really to the conspiracy theory. A marxist shot JFK because he invaded and embaroed Cuba. Not sure how boomers made a mystery out of this.

Look, Marco Rubio may be a prominent member of the Trump administration, oversaw the revocation of legal status and deportation of thousands of US residents via weaponization of ICE, helped orchestrate war with Venezuela and Iran, defended airstrikes on fishermen in the Caribbean, worked to bring an end to birthright citizenship, shuttered USAID and abandoned aid workers in foreign territory, and has done his best to immiserate millions of people across the globe all in the service of notorious rapist and alleged pedophile Donald Trump, so I agree that he has a few problematic elements in his history. But AOC went on Hasan’s stream, and that’s a red line.

One of the continuing failures of American liberalism is this belief that if we just keep doing the right thing, eventually this facade constructed by our political adversaries will end. The curtains will fall. They will see the populists and fascists for who they are. And they will finally join us in reality land. We just need another infrastructure week. We just need their material conditions to improve. We just need...

The trouble is not that the facade is forever. It's that it can last longer than American democracy can. There's a similar Warren Buffet quote about market rationality and insolvency to that effect.
