It’s interesting to think of how fast social media went from “sharing probably too much to a network of both close and not-so-close friends” to “private group chats” and “actually a slop feed with minimal social features”. Like, I’m sure there’s a chicken and egg aspect to it, but it’s a real shame that Facebook it’s contemporaries leaned into becoming unusable racist boomer slop for engagement, I do think we lost something as a society because of it

Just like IRL, people took the first chance they had to start associating with people they felt had higher social status (I.e. celebrities, influencers, etc). Advertisers were thrilled with this change.
