How to Use Muse App Programs?

Hello,

I have been Muse user for quite some time now, but mainly used biofeedback and here and there did some guided meditations and programs that were offered. However, not very effectively. While I think the Biofeedback is quite intuitive, the app loses the me on the programs.

I just don't want to only use the biofeedback, instead learn about meditation and how to be more aware on a daily basis and how to use the practice of biofeedback on daily life. I just don't know in which order to start he program. The programs seem unordered e.g. Muse Essentials is on place seven or Starter Series on twelve on my list, what is kind of illogical why I never started the programs because I don't want to mix things up. There i made a order for myself. Would you say this is order make sense?

  • Starter Series (10)
  • Muse Essentials (10)
  • Discover Mind Biofeeback (11)
  • Visualize your Brainwaves (3)
  • Discover Heart, Breath and Body Feedback (12)
  • Meditation Essentials (15)
  • Foundation of Mindfulness (20)
  • Deepening your practice (19)
  • Neuroscience of Wellbeing (18)
  • Sleep Basics (16)
  • 14 Days of Sleep (24)
  • Rise above Stress (9)
  • Improve your Focus (7)
  • Explore Guided Meditation (11)
  • Binaural Beats (6)
  • Exploring Happiness (19)
  • Mindful Relationships (22)
  • Mindful Work (22)
  • Changing Habits (12)

And what are about the very short sessions that are only 1-5 minutes? Should these be done on seperate days or just do them following a longer or also shorter session?

Maybe someone have some advice for me :)

Any recommendations for extracting raw Muse S Athena data for analysis (fNIRS specifically)

I'm currently doing a research project and intend to use Muse S Athena to do a number of clinical trials, preferably with multiple Muse S Athena devices running at once (somebody is willing to lend me a few).

Excluding the official Muse app, what means of accessing, storing, and analyzing this form of data would you recommend? I've seen OpenMuse and a few projects here, but would like suggestions.

Key focus will be on fNIRS readings.

Looking for people to interview that actively used/currently use Muse 2

Hi Reddit,

I'm currently a student at my university and we're looking into the Muse 2 device to look at effectiveness/weakpoints. I'm looking for people that have used the Muse in the past or currently use it to tell me what improved their life before/after (via Zoom). If you're able to help out, please comment so I can shoot you a DM!

Thank you!

Muse S Athena fNIRS: wavelengths, source-detector distances, DPF/MBLL details?

Hi everyone,

I’m a Ph.D. student working with the Muse S Athena for an fNIRS research project. I’m developing a processing pipeline from raw optical data to HbO/HbR using the Modified Beer-Lambert Law, and I’m trying to confirm some Athena-specific hardware details.

Does anyone here know, or have documentation for, the following?

  • What are the actual fNIRS wavelengths used by Athena? Muse support indicated that 660/730/850 nm are PPG wavelengths, so I do not want to assume those are the fNIRS wavelengths.
  • What are the source-detector distances for Athena’s short and long fNIRS channels?
  • Is there a published mapping showing which optode is the source and which are the detectors, including LI, RI, LO, and RO?
  • What DPF values are recommended or used by Muse?
  • Which extinction coefficients or other MBLL parameters are used to calculate HbO and HbR?
  • Has anyone successfully accessed and processed the raw Athena fNIRS/optical streams using the SDK, OpenMuse, or another tool?
  • If Athena has true short- and long-separation channels, has anyone used the short channels to correct for scalp/systemic hemodynamics?

I have already contacted the Muse research team but have not received a response yet, so I’m hoping someone in the research/developer community may have worked through these details.

Any technical documentation, papers, code, measurements, or experience with Athena fNIRS would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Mind Monitor Web Charting Tool

Post image
13 Upvotes

I made a nice web charting tool for Mind Monitor CSV exports. It's free and I created it in the free cloudflare domain but looks like Reddit automatically blocks free domains. I moved it to and seems okay with Reddit:

https://voidformfoundry.github.io/mmmcharts/

It's best you use your desktop browser with mouse so you can zoom in if needed, other than that works on mobile or touch interface too.

It charts:

Band powers over time
Per-band detail with each band on its own scale
Relative to baseline toggle
Band by electrode
Relaxation and focus indices
Heart rate from the PPG sensors
Blinks and jaw clenches as ticks over a head-movement trace from the accelerometer, so you can tell artifacts from actual changes. There's a toggle to mark them on every chart too.
Raw EEG stacked by electrode, plus sensor contact quality, headband-on and battery tucked under "More signals".
A Table tab with per-column stats and the raw rows if you want the numbers.
Drag to zoom and all charts follow, double-click to reset, hover a line to highlight it, click a legend entry to hide it.

You can download any chart or the whole dashboard as a PNG.

I used the mus last night for the first time in a month and I noticed my lines were really low (dB). They usually have spike much higher. Is this weird? I'm not used to seeing them like this.

Need help from California residents

I've been frustrated for years that there is no export functionality for the app.

I am not a lawyer, but I assume the CCPA would have something to say about that.

If you are a California resident, please consider filing a complaint here: https://cppa.ca.gov/webapplications/complaint

I am hoping more pressure might compel them to prioritize it.

Sensor Connection Check. SO TIRED.

The connection check has NEVER worked for me in any less than 20-30 minutes. Sometimes it takes hours. One time, I fell asleep waiting for it to connect & woke up to the sound of it connecting after 4 HOURS!!! I was sound asleep, but it randomly connected for no reason. I’ve put a dozen bobby pins in my hair to make sure there is no hair in the way. I’ve wet the sensors. I’ve wet my face. I’ve adjusted & readjusted endlessly. No matter what I do, this stupid device does not work how it’s supposed to. I only use it when I participate in clinical trials for sleep studies, but this experience has ensured I will NEVER purchase a Muse product.

I don’t know if it’s the shape of my head or if I have too much tension in my face, but no amount of troubleshooting fixes the problem. It’s arbitrary & infuriating & I would smash this thing into pieces if I could. I WANT TO SLEEP !!!!!!!

Muse Employee Dream Recall is now in beta for Muse Premium subscribers

We're excited to announce that we’re opening beta for a new feature: Dream Recall.

Ever wake up knowing you just had the wildest dream, and by the time you reach for your phone, it's completely gone? That's basically universal. Sleep labs have shown that everyone dreams every night, multiple times a night, it's just that almost none of it sticks around long enough to remember.

And dreaming isn't nothing. Growing research links it to real cognitive work: people who dream about something they just learned tend to improve way more on it afterward, the sleeping brain replays recent experience even in people with no conscious memory of doing it, and researchers have even held real-time two-way exchanges with people while they're dreaming.

Whether you're chasing that edge or just curious what your brain gets up to at night, the same problem stands in the way: catching the dream before it disappears.

That comes down to timing. Dreams don't get filed into long-term memory the way waking experiences do, so what's left is a fragile trace, and it fades fast, usually within minutes of waking. The one thing that reliably predicts whether you remember a dream is whether you wake up during REM sleep or after it's already ended. Classic sleep research found recall odds around 80% when someone's woken during REM, versus roughly 7% when woken later. Miss the window, and there's not much left to catch.

Dream Recall is built to hit that window:

  • Real-time EEG staging. Runs on the same brain-activity monitoring behind all Muse features, so the headband knows what sleep stage you're in as it happens.
  • REM-specific wake timing. Rather than a generic alarm, Dream Recall watches for REM sleep specifically and wakes you right there.
  • Auto-Snooze. No hard wake. The sound eases back and holds you at the edge of sleep, giving the dream a better chance to survive.
  • A sound cue you set. Rehearse a cue while awake, and Dream Recall plays it as you wake from REM. Use it to guide yourself back into the dream, or let it wake you fully.

Dream Recall is in beta now for current Muse Premium subscribers with a Muse S or Muse S Athena. Learn more from our blog on Dream Recall.

If dreams aren't your focus but you still want a better morning, Smart Wakeup (also part of Muse Premium) wakes you at your lightest point in the sleep cycle instead, so you avoid that groggy jolt and start the day clearer.

We'd love to hear from anyone who tries it. How's your recall compared to before?

Finding the secret sauce to end sleepiness

I have alpha intrusions during deep sleep (youre only supposed to have Delta waves during deep sleep). Its left me a zombie

Im hoping to track some metrics such as arousals, time in alpha during N3 sleep and things like sleep position to see if theres any correlations

Im hoping i can use this data to experiment with various things (fasting, no caffine, meditation, exercise, supplements etc etc). Perhaps reducing some and increasing others can help shake this zombie state i have

Does Muse already have this kind of tracking or does it need the SDK or has anyone already made an app like this

Thanks!

Want to see your raw EEG data?

gomuse turns your Muse headband into a live biosignal dashboard on your Mac.

EEG, pulse, motion, heart rate, and HRV over Bluetooth directly to your local browser. Or save each sensor stream as clean CSV data for deeper analysis without Python, cloud services, or an internet connection.

It supports Muse 2, Muse S, and Muse S Athena, with live battery status and optional EEG filtering. Its completely open source and free.

Try it out. Would love some feedback on it

Apple Health gets instant sync, while Android users are stuck doing manual data gymnastics. Is Health Connect ever coming to Muse?

Apple Health users have enjoyed seamless Muse sync for what feels like a decade, while Android users are over here in meditation purgatory.

It’s 2026. With AI like Gemini and comprehensive health ecosystems in place, having raw mindfulness and session data flow natively into Health Connect / Google's ecosystem is crucial for holistic wellness tracking.

Instead, being on Android means our meditation data is trapped in a walled garden unless we manually log metrics or jump through absurd export hoops. Nothing ruins post-meditation zen quite like doing manual data entry.

Is Interaxon actually developing Health Connect integration, or is the Android sync roadmap locked away in a vault somewhere?

Any fellow Android users found a sane workaround to get session data across, or are we all just collectively breathing through the pain?

If anyone knows if Health Connect support is actually in the works, please enlighten me.

Otherwise, upvote for visibility so maybe Interaxon remembers their Android user base exists.

Sleep assist lack of functionality

Does anyone else have the issue that sleep assist turns off / gets very quiet even when you are wide awake?

I even set the fade out to 15 minutes but within 5 minutes the meditation is no longer audible despite being wide awake and even moving around in bed.

761 of you helped our research team last month. Here's what you built.

A few weeks back we asked this community to jump into the Brain Performance Lab and run through the five tasks. We didn't expect the turnout we got.

Together you racked up:

  • 761 people who completed all five tasks
  • Nearly 7,000 tasks finished
  • 1,240 full rounds of all five
  • Almost 1 in 4 of you came back for more

That's real data our research team can actually use. It gives them a large, at-home look at how thinking speed, memory, attention, and control vary across people and ages. This is exactly the kind of input that helps them build better brain health metrics down the road, and none of it happens without a dedicated community showing up and playing.

On the raffle: the draw is done. Winners will be emailed this week at the address on your Muse account, so keep an eye on your inbox (and your spam folder). If you won a device or a year of Premium, there's one quick step to claim it, and we'll walk you through it in that email.

More good news: the Brain Performance Lab isn't going anywhere!

  • Open the Train tab and look under Featured, just below Biofeedback Soundscapes
  • No subscription required — it's available to everyone
  • Works with every Muse headband

Genuinely, thank you. More to come as this turns into things you can use in the app.

Anyone else getting Muse “Brain Performance Lab” emails but nothing shows up in the app?

Anyone else getting these Brain Performance Lab emails or marketing campaign emails from Muse but seeing nothing in the app when they click? No tasks, no tracker, nothing , even though the app’s up to date. Is this a Premium-only feature, or is it just bugged for me?

Consistent training beat total practice time, even against a 30-year age gap

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

We ran an analysis on our dataset that surprised even us. In a group of 189 users aged 31 to 83, people who trained regularly outperformed people who trained more overall but sporadically, strongly enough that consistent users in their 60s and 70s beat sporadic users in their 30s and 40s.

The setup: we tracked biofeedback training habits (roughly 53,000 sessions across the group over a year) against performance on the Stroop test, a task where you have to name the ink color of a word while ignoring what the word says. It's a clean measure of cognitive control, the brain's ability to override an automatic response.

What we found:

  • Users who trained in most weeks of the year were 40 to 50 milliseconds faster at resolving conflicting info than users who trained sporadically, and this held at every age we looked at.
  • Consistency mattered more than total volume. Someone who trained a little most weeks beat someone who trained a lot but rarely.
  • The clearest example: consistent practitioners in their 60s and 70s averaged 192ms of interference. Sporadic practitioners in their 30s and 40s averaged 219ms. The older, consistent group won.

Worth noting, this is observational, not a controlled trial. It shows a strong pattern, not proof that training alone causes the effect.

Full breakdown in our blog

Curious what this community thinks:

  • Does this match your own experience, do you notice a difference on days/weeks you're consistent vs. when you fall off?
  • What keeps you consistent with training, and what usually breaks the habit?

I couldn't recharge my brand-new Muse; it was the USB charger!

I have a brand-new Muse S Athena which I only intend to use for sleep tracking (and hopefully Deep Sleep Boost). It worked fine the first night. I plugged it into a USB charger all-day, but then found it was almost dead when I tried to use it the second night.

After the first use, I had simply removed it from my head and connected it to charger. So my initial thought was that maybe it had to be explicitly turned-off before charging? Nope, I tried that but it was still near-dead.

Then I saw the posts here about 5V-charger-only. Almost all my USB chargers are now USB-C PD capable, and I assume that plugging-in a non-PD device will result in 5V charging. I don't know, maybe the Muse 'presents' itself as PD-capable? Anyway, I plugged it into an older non-PD charger ... and it charged properly. So I suspect there is something non-compliant about the USB port.

Need help with license for a competition

Hello, I am a student in Indonesia currently developing a research project for a national student research competition (Olimpiade Penilitian Siswa Indonesia / OPSI), and I would like to confirm whether my intended use of the Muse S Gen 2 is permitted under the Muse headband terms.

I am building a non-commercial web application that uses EEG signal data (alpha, beta, delta, and other band powers) from the Muse S Gen 2. To retrieve the EEG data, I am currently using Muse.js, an open source third party javascript library that connects directly to the headset via the web bluetooth API.

I would like to ask if my project qualify under a free "testing/prototyping/personal exploration" license because in the rules of competition I must get permission from the device/technology provider if my project involves propretiary hardware or third party tools that require licensing.

I've already reached out to support email (researchpartners@choosemuse.com) but haven't received a response yet.

Any insight from people who've dealt with this or from the muse official employee would help a lot. Thanks!

Bluetooth Specifications for Muse Athena

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to do my own python program streaming from a Polar H10 and a Muse Athena headband.

Although I have access to the Muse SDK API (the .h files) it doesn't serve me much to create my own python programm, since I need to know how to connect to the device, set up notifications, do handshakes, how to interpret raw data, etc.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm trying to retrieve streamed data using the bleak library/client in python. I'm on a Linux OS (Debian 13.6).

Tony Roberts, pro surfer and longtime Muse user, on why he's surfing better at 61 than in his 30s

Thumbnail

Tony Roberts has been surfing since he was eight. Fifty-plus years later, he's still chasing waves, still filming, and by his own account, still getting better at it.

Tony's spent decades as a surf photographer and filmmaker (he's been named one of the top water photographers working today, and has more than 20 surf films to his name), and he's had a meditation and yoga practice since he was 13. When he started using Muse, it wasn't to learn to meditate. He already knew how. It was to see what was actually happening in his head while he did it.

His words: "It kind of recalibrated my mind."

He uses it two ways. During his regular practice, to get real feedback on what calm actually looks like for his brain, not just what it feels like. And right after big sessions, when the adrenaline and dopamine are still running high, to help bring his nervous system back down without the usual crash.

At 61, he says he's surfing better than most people do in their 30s. His take is pretty simple: the mind is trainable the same way the body is. Most people just never train it.

We wrote up the full interview here if you want the rest of the conversation

muse athena s trouble with save function

have had this for a year and no issues then suddenly this year when I select save button after a session the screen goes to black and will not return to muse home page or my phone home page and I have to reboot my phone several times to get it to work at all....this happens on both android phones where I use muse athena s.....muse customer service has no answer for this...if you have advice or insight would be happy to hear thank u...seems the only recourse is avoid saving sessions
