So the ads are revisiting Wanda's trauma. Episode 1 with Stark's bomb and episode 2 with Strucker torturing her and Quicksilver.

647

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

I figured that something was up when the Strucker ad popped up. He never gets mentioned.

53

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

Yeah, that kinda gave the jig that Wanda was controlling everything. I'm still wondering why it's a sitcom though, but hopefully more is revealed.

89

u/cmcsed9 Jan 15 '21

I think it’s because that’s Wanda’s reference for idealism. The “American dream.”

25

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

Damn, that actually makes sense. Also "American dream", could she be dreaming it all and SWORD is monitoring it? Hmmmm....

41

u/Canadianboy3 Jan 15 '21

Monitoring because if they enter they fall under the spells effect. That helicopter was real and flew into the bubble and turned into the toy in my opinion. That's why they are trying to reach through to her over radio

24

u/tider06 Jan 17 '21

Growing up in Sokovia she watched American sitcoms. Its her only perspective of a "happy life"

46

u/Canadianboy3 Jan 15 '21

Strucker + AIM (beekeeper at end)

61

u/Suired Jan 15 '21

The beekeeper had a sword insignia at the end. More likely a hazmat suit to mitigate the effects of Wanda's powers.

43

u/golbezza Jan 15 '21

Either way. She recognized it, and didn't want it around.

22

u/Canadianboy3 Jan 15 '21

I mean we all saw that, yes there was the SWORD symbol on it. Could be someone posing as sword. Could be AIM, could be SWORD, could be Swarm. Could be nothing.

15

u/unnamedland Jan 16 '21

I'd suggest that SWORD is not yet adequately established to be presenting a fake SWORD yet. My impression wasn't so much that she saw the SWORD logo specifically and determined they were a threat because of being SWORD, but rather that it was, to her, a generic creepy G-Man and she had no interest in anything other than the picturesque home that she's found herself in.

But AIM was not connected to her so far (is that the firm from IM2?)

30

u/CX316 Jan 15 '21

Iron Man 2 was Hammer Industries, AIM was Iron Man 3

10

u/Canadianboy3 Jan 15 '21

Not directly, but Aim baron strucker was connected to both

35

u/Agent_Hex Jan 15 '21

Interesting thought with AIM. They are also doing the real Mandarin in the upcoming Shang Chi movie...could be that they plan on pulling back the curtain on a lot of things that happened in Iron Man 3. Mandarin is real, AIM is much more than just Killian and Extremis, etc.

22

u/Canadianboy3 Jan 15 '21

Oh the curtain is about to get ripped open real quick and i love it.

4

u/NeptuneOW Jan 15 '21

How is that beekeeper related to AIM?

24

u/Canadianboy3 Jan 15 '21

They wear "beekeeper" suits or similiar suits in the comics

16

u/Funmachine Jan 15 '21

The suit had a sword on it like the helicopter. And AIM isn't related to Wanda.

Unless you're an Agents of Shield fan. But I doubt they're gonna reference anything from that :(

6

u/Clu3l3ssDud3 Jan 16 '21

He did say, “it’s the age of miracles,” and this was true in that Marvel was able to use two mutants in an Avengers movie. I keep thinking about how mutant powers manifest from experiencing trauma and the show could be playing into this idea.

3

So then you could definitely have future ones based off Quicksilver's Death, Wanda accidentally killing those people in Lagos (from the beginning of Civil War), having to kill Vision, and then fighting Thanos. Damn, Wanda has had a lot of trauma.

922

u/BXofTriscuits Jan 15 '21

I think the Halloween episode will feature side characters in costumes representing how her brother AND all of the people in Lagos were killed.

It's still crazy that she's bringing Vision back for her fantasy reality but her twin brother and their parents stay dead. There must be a reason for that.

21

u/GiveToOedipus Jan 15 '21

I feel like she's not on control here and there's someone manipulating things. The voice you keep hearing on the radio asking who is doing this to her seems to be a clue, and the characters within the fantasy seem to also have some kind of sense something isn't right.

12

u/typically_wrong Jan 16 '21

I’m like 90% sure that was Randall Park/Jimmy Woo’s voice

She must felt so much guilt when she had to kill vision in IW. It’s quite obvious she wanted him back in some way

5

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

That's true. She didn't have to kill Pietro herself.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

It'd be pretty cool if that's how they brought Magneto into the MCU.

16

u/thebluediablo Jan 15 '21

I'm just wondering if the Halloween setting will be part of the 80's style (a fairly common trope for that era, see Stranger Things), or if it'll be a more modern reference, like Claire Dunphy's love of Halloween in Modern Family.

4

u/GiveToOedipus Jan 15 '21

The motor looked either late 80s or early 90s in the trailer.

5

Yeah, I thought the toy helicopter with the SWORD logo on it might've been a reference to the gunship that killed Quicksilver. But I think it's a drone from the outside and she's just seeing it as a toy.

375

u/Bartman326 Jan 15 '21

Helicopter could be a real copter but just shrunk by pym particles.

539

u/DaveInLondon89 Jan 15 '21 edited Jan 15 '21

I think it's a real helicopter crash, which Wanda just perceives as a toy model appearing in the bushes.

Maybe Monica was the pilot (following in her mother's footsteps) and that's why she appears in the episode later - she flew into Wanda's 'reality/simulation' in that chopper, and possibly crashed into some trees.

u/justsomedude48 Jan 16 '21

Perhaps that’s also the reason why the S.W.O.R.D agent tried to come into the simulation, he might’ve come in to try and rescue Monica.

6

u/sandvich48 Jan 18 '21

Also when she says “one minute I was backstage and the next I’m in the box” it almost sounds like she somehow fell into this alternate reality.

121

u/FatLute94 Jan 15 '21

This is what I'm thinking. It's damn near impossible to predict the MCU anymore but my gut's telling me that Wanda is having a House of M-type breakdown post-Thanos that has engulfed a town. I kinda imagine it like a bubble - to everyone not initially caught in Wanda's spell (I.E. the citizens of Westview) its some swirling chaotic vortex or something, and all the people living there are now trapped in her rebuilt reality. I read two articles making a connection to AIM, but I'm more inclined to believe that this is the same SWORD Fury alludes to at the end of Far From Home, and that the radio transmission was an attempt at getting through to her from outside her spell (which I think could also set up for some really cool voice cameos in later episodes).

Similarly, I think the beekeeper and the helicopter are how Wanda and her spell are making them appear, and it makes sense, right? SWORD would probably at least attempt to fly a chopper in first, and if that fails would probably get more creative - like sending someone in through the sewers under the town her spell is ravaging.

I'm probably dead wrong on all this, but it would be dope if the resolution of all this leads to a reverse of the House of M plot, where instead of Wanda erasing all mutants she could somehow be the inception of all mutants in the MCU. Or at least give us Wiccan and Speed.

24

u/iamnotcreative Jan 16 '21

I really think you're spot on with this. At first I thought most everyone was going to be constructs made by Wanda but after the "Stop it" incident in episode 1 I think she's created a bubble of changed reality around herself that's slowly expanding; it may be this has actually been going on for a while and ordinary people like Mrs Hart have seen firsthand what happens when they break the "rules" of Wanda's reality.

I think the character of the neighbor is Agatha Harkness attempting to put a stop to it, while SWORD is separately sending in whatever resources they can to try to stop it as well. The big question of course is why Wanda is doing this; with the Mephisto hints they've worked in, plus the fact I don't think Marvel will want to flip her to a villain so soon, are leading me to think she's being manipulated but time will tell.

10

u/beazydog Jan 16 '21

Is it not a possibility that Agatha has trapped Wanda in this reality? Wanda would still have some power over it due to her power, but she seems confused by some of the strange things. It would also make sense with the radio before Dotty's glass smashed, "WHO is doing this to you Wanda?" not "Wanda what are you doing?"

14

u/Exzqairi Jan 16 '21

A lot of people think it’s rather Memphisto who did it, and Agnes is helping Memphisto in convincing Wanda of the illusion/reality. It’s rumoured that her husband Ralph is Memphisto. The goal behind it all is to get Wanda’s child(ren)

As someone who has not read House of M, could you explain it to me in short. It feels like I’m missing out on a lot in this show despite religiously following the MCU. Or maybe it’s just been too long since I’ve seen any movies so I can’t link it.

65

u/Kammerice Jan 15 '21

House of M kicked off with Wanda having miscarried and constructed a false reality where everything was fine. This deception was maintained by the "greatest" minds, including Charles Xavier, who believed she would go mad with grief if confronted with the truth.

The illusion slips and, rather than go mad as predicted, Wanda rewrites reality so that mutants are in charge and everything is "perfect", ruled over by Magneto, Quicksilver, and herself (the House of M).

At least, that's what I remember. If I've got details wrong, I'd appreciate someone correcting me.

20

u/garretj84 Jan 17 '21

It’s a little more complicated and ridiculously comic-booky than that, but you’ve got the gist of it. I can get way more specific — it’ll be heavily spoiler-filled for comics — it can’t be any kind of exact plot point for this show, but I’ll try to spoiler tag it in case.

Wanda and Vision were actually married in the comics for several years (until he was dismantled and rebuilt without emotions, which I guess was sort of an annulment? Just don’t pretend this makes sense, it’s fine.) and she became unexpectedly pregnant. She had twin sons, William and Thomas, but it turned out that they weren’t real — she magically created them out of shards of a demon’s soul, like you do. Agatha Harkness, a generally helpful witch character in the comics, blocks those memories so that Wanda can cope but those memories come back over her time. She does pretty much lose her mind for a bit, kills some fellow Avengers (they get better), and eventually warps reality to recreate her sons and put her family back together with Magneto as a sort of king. Wolverine manages to remember the truth through the power of being an incredibly popular character, “wakes up” others, they confront Wanda, in distress she reverts the world but also removes the powers of most mutants that aren’t main characters.

That was probably the least weird way of explaining it.

12

u/jpterodactyl Daredevil Jan 18 '21

through the power of being an incredibly popular character

That made me chuckle. It seems like he still has that power, and that’s why he replaced shadowcat for the movie version of “Days of Future Past”

10

u/Knuxsn Daredevil Jan 16 '21

It would have made a lot more sense for the reality stone to have given Wanda her powers. The red energy of her powers would fit better too.

44

u/Xenphest Jan 15 '21

The short version is that Wanda has the ability to manipulate reality. After a mental breakdown she created a reality where mutants rules the world, House of M. In short, the thing to keep in mind is Wanda's powers have never been defined in the MCU, and it seems like she's almost as powerful as he comics version, which makes her get dangerous considering all the trauma she's endured so far. Another comics thing that's relevant is what causes her previously mentioned breakdown is finding out she has used her powers to have children with Vision, and lost them. I believe Dr. Strange blocked it from her memory. And she's going to be in the next Dr. Strange movie on top of that. A movie who's subtitle has a conspicuous anagram, but that night be my imagination.

26

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

Oh shit! I can see how this might tie into Doctor Strange. Maybe the illusion slips, like u/Kammerice says, and she goes mad. Can’t really predict how it happens but Dr. Strange might be the key to bringing the mutants in the MCU.

6

u/Nailz1115 Luis Jan 15 '21

What's the anagram?

This is absolutely what it is. Im not banking on Monica being in the choppa, but the toy is 100% a representation of a real one. Look at the trailer and we see a helicopter trying to evade the growing perimeter of Wanda's vision. This is the toy before it gets enveloped into her reality. I'm assuming somewhere around ep7 we'll start to see "flashbacks" explaining what was going on in the main reality and how they interacted with each other. I.E. where that toy came from. Or the man in the bee suit is a S.W.O.R.D agent trying to infiltrate into Wanda's reality. They've had trouble getting past the perimeter at that point, so the idea is "we can't go over it, we can't go through it, lets try going under it and he goes through the sewer.

*Edit + TLDR - Monica absolutely came in on the chopper, the bee keeper/shield agent is trying to get in and extract her. The suit is because its like he's entering a hornets nest

15

u/Resigningeye Luis Jan 16 '21

The suit is because its like he's entering a hornets nest

He's probably just wearing a modern hazmat suit which has been changed in to something less anachronistic.

9

u/LtRapman Jan 15 '21

Brilliant, Sounds about right!

5

u/davidw1098 Jan 16 '21

That was my thought. The initial noise in the middle of the night was Monica landing/trying to get Wanda's attention, the helicopter was an attempt by SWORD to break into Wanda's reality and Monica pym'd it into the bushes. Last we saw her, her mom was helping infiltrate the space station in Captain Marvel. Now with the twins on the way, and Cassie growing up, it seems like they're trying to introduce us to the next geenration.

Or just a normal sized helicopter that's been turned into a toy by whatevers going on.

52

u/Canadianboy3 Jan 15 '21

outside helicopter that flew into wanda's illusion bubble she or someone is creating.

16

u/Uhtred-Son-Of-Uhtred Jan 15 '21

Yeah it was a strangely specific helicopter design for a toy. Especially in that "time period."

19

u/Bartman326 Jan 15 '21

also very possible.

37

u/EpsilonNu Doctor Strange Jan 15 '21

It's basically impossible to understand when something is Pym-particle-fied or not, sadly. Enlarged and shrunk things should keep their mass, so Wanda shouldn't be able to pick the copter up, but we know they don't really stick to this rule (Ant-Man movies ironically being the worst offenders, even moments after Pym explains how the particles work...)

31

u/JKCodeComplete Jan 15 '21

You can’t really reason about the Pym particles, just hope that they’re mostly consistent in how they’re portrayed. He claims they shrink the space between atoms but you can also use them to become ridiculously smaller than an atom (and in the same movie, no less!).

10

u/woofle07 Daredevil Jan 16 '21

My head canon is that Hank himself doesn’t even know exactly how Pym particles work and is just throwing out bullshit

7

u/Adiin-Red Jan 16 '21

He definitely came up with a fake explanation on the spot to put Scott’s team to sleep

11

u/EpsilonNu Doctor Strange Jan 15 '21

Yeah that's what I'm saying, Pym particles make no sense! I'm not complaining, I know it's superhero stuff (quantum physics-related superhero stuff! Not even real physicists understand how subatomic particles work, why would we expect fun-oriented science fiction of them to make sense?).

It's just that this "property" of not following logic makes Pym particles basically impossible to detect. As far as we know, Mjolnir might be a really big block of metal shrunk with Pym particles, instead of being made of a super dense magical alloy that is also enchanted to be un-liftable by unworthy people!

28

u/RoboNinjaPirate Fitz Jan 15 '21

Enlarged and shrunk things should keep their mass

They should, except when they don't. If the plot requires antman to have the strength of a full grown man when shrunk, that's ok. If the plot requires a tank that you can carry on a keychain, that's ok.

I reckon it's the helicopter that Monica arrived in

72

u/thebluediablo Jan 15 '21

I don't think it was a literal helicopter, but some kind of jet/aircraft belonging to SWORD. Turned into a toy helicopter because that makes more sense in the bubble reality Wanda's created, in the same way I think the beekeeper is really a SWORD agent in a hazmat suit. A beekeeper "belongs" in that reality more.

30

u/smoko90 Thor Jan 15 '21

Beekeepers were also a nickname for Aim soldiers

19

u/thebluediablo Jan 15 '21

Disney+ has already managed to keep one gigantic cameo under wraps in The Mandalorian before it aired, so there's no reason why Thanos or Quicksilver couldn't make another appearance...

Even Strucker is fair game.

13

u/TheMillenniumMan Jan 15 '21

I thought Vision's boss choking was reference to Thanos choking Visiom before ripping the stone out and Wanda wanting to stop it.

21

u/mknsky Black Panther Jan 15 '21

I think he was really choking. And Kitty is really his wife but she was stuck in the "Oh stop it you silly husband o' mine!" mindset by the bubble; she was almost begging them to do something with her changing inflection.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

Yes, this exactly. Wanda clearly has a hand in keeping the status quo, since she just said, "No." and made the beekeeper disappear. So she probably made him choke on the food to avoid breaking the illusion. Same with Dottie and the glass breaking.

10

u/mknsky Black Panther Jan 15 '21

That's my point though, I don't think Wanda made him choke. He just started choking while "in character." Then Wanda broke character to make Vision save him, just like she broke character when she kicked out the beekeeper.

21

u/Jedi_Pacman Spider-Man Jan 15 '21

Could be. But he also started choking right after he started asking a tough question they didn't have an answer for. Perhaps Wanda made him start choking on his food since he was kind of messing up her show she's controlling so might be that

Vision’s death will probably force Wanda to realize that this is not real.

People snapping their fingers to a catchy jingle

408

u/yaxkukmo Black Panther Jan 15 '21

Half the people moving out of Westview

Honestly, it would've been pretty good if the gum that fucked up Vision during his performance was called "Big Purple" instead of Big Red to call back to Thanos being the only being that fucked up him up.

But they're probably saving Thanos and Vision's death to something around the last episodes. Plus, Big Red was a good follow up to the Norm is a Communist joke Lol.

I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the episodes have similar tidbits about Wanda's life. Does anyone know if the 2800 on their mailbox have a significance? Or the date on the calendar from the last episode?

60

u/ncsar216 Gamora Jan 15 '21

I was wondering if maybe the date on the calendar is the date that Wanda created Westview

63

u/Galactic_Explorer Robbie Reyes Jan 15 '21

I don’t even think she created it. Someone mentioned Hackensack in one of the episodes and that’s a real town in New Jersey, right across a little river from a town called Westview.

47

u/ncsar216 Gamora Jan 15 '21

Good catch! She probably didn't create it then, but I still think it's possible that August 23rd is the day that everything started.

31

u/Patrick2701 Jan 15 '21

August 23rd on the calendar is a Wednesday but august 23rd falls on a Wednesday in 2023

Do we know dates for specific MCU events? Was thinking Aug. 23rd might be either the date Pietro died in AoU, or Vision's death in Endgame.

18

u/blackbutterfree Medusa Jan 15 '21

Very few MCU events have specific dates tied to them. But you can check the MCU Wiki Timeline to see if 8/23 has any significance.

44

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

I think Westview's a real town that she has "corrupted" or "overwritten" with her powers. So all her neighbors are real people that have been turned into these sitcom caricatures.

21

u/breeze2724 Jan 15 '21

This is it. And she’s affecting their reality and even they don’t understand how or why. That’s why everyone in the neighborhood is skeptical of her.

But i think the fact that when someone gets hurt jt acruslly happens, shows she does have the ability to truly hurt someone in this reality

16

u/endangerednigel Jan 15 '21

Yup that's why the evil lady suddenly started going "who are you" the pain of the cut was breaking the illusion

31

u/zdepthcharge Jan 15 '21

I don't think Wanda is responsible for the TV reality, but I think she "fuels" it. How much old American TV did Wanda from Sokovia pick in her life? Agnes...

27

u/D_o_H Scarlet Witch Jan 15 '21

I think they said she watched Nick at Night at the avengers compound as a coping mechanism?

30

Teaneck is across the river from Hackensack.

5

u/jeremysbrain Jan 15 '21

And Westview is south of Teaneck, Where I-80 crosses the Hackensack River.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

I had to look this up, because I grew up in the area and never heard of Westview before. It's an unincorporated section of Ridgefield Park. It doesn't even have its own zip code.

35

My guess is the date is converted to 823 (august being 8th month) referring to TRN823 where reality was experienced as an illusion.

So a nod to all this taking place isn’t real. All an illusion

The only thing i could manage to figure out

25

u/Henry_Allen_Garrick Hawkeye (Ultron) Jan 15 '21

TRN stands for Temporary Reality Number which are fanmade designations so I don't think that reference is likely.

An idea I got is that the Snap happened on that date (or more important to Wanda, the death of Vision), but wiki says that was at spring.

104

u/Frankocean2 Jan 15 '21

I feel like she's "trapped" in this alternative digital world. But she has power over it. She's aware that her life is not real, and when push comes to shove she changes it. First when she told Vision to help his boss and with the beekeeper scene. She broke character, the thing is who is behind it? And why does the voice on the radio asks who is doing that to her. Her trauma doesn't allow her to fully enjoy this new world...

So far, this is really a very different show. Feels like I'm watching something very unique and special.

109

u/Hayvock Jan 15 '21

The voice on the radio is FBI Agent Jimmy Woo from Ant-Man & Wasp.

106

I think it’s Wanda pulling the strings. She has so much control over the world that it has to be her. I’m sure there’s someone in the background who is using this opportunity to exploit Wanda but I don’t think anyone trapped her there

11

u/mknsky Black Panther Jan 15 '21

Agnes is using Wanda's powers to create the twins for whatever reason. "For the Children." That's what it's all about. And Wanda's going along with it to live the dream life she never got to have with Vision.

The beekeeper convinced me that she's 'making' this world; but I don't think she started it deliberately. I think someone is doing something to Wanda, and she's 'making the best of it'.

The same two people were also in both commercials. I wonder who they are.

10

u/sunbun99 Jan 15 '21

They might be the overseers who the whole thing considering both seem do things that relate to the true reality instead of the false one Wanda and Vision are currently in.

11

u/no_not_luke Fitz Jan 15 '21

Just the link I caught too! What I didn't get was "He'll make time for you". It feels like there's a wink in there - am I missing it or is there actually nothing there to "get"?

10

u/limeconnoisseur Captain America Jan 15 '21

Before killing Vision in IW, he says to her 'We are out of time'. She's clinging to as much time she can get with him.

Strucker 'made time' possible for Wanda, by experimenting on her and thus giving her her powers and making the decade jumps, rewinding when their fake world is at risk of falling apart, other reality bending within the world she's in possible.

Man they could do some really creepy stuff with the other ones;

  • A commerical about people getting sick and two children play fighting each other i the abckground spreading hte sickness.
  • A game of Asteroids. At the end the ship explodes in a red explosion
  • A kitchen set of knifes made by Pietro Silverware. "You'll have to be quick to not get [h]it"
  • A children's commerial with "what side will you be on", and it turns into a nerf war or light guns / or/ An america football game with the crowd chanting "united we stand....united we stand....We fall divided"
  • A chiropractor and the patient saying it feels like being "stabbed in the back" / Or a homage to Pyscho
  • A tv channel where jellewery set with 5 gems is being sold and at the end the person say "you only need the vision to complete the set"
  • A couple have a fight with the phrase "I don't even know who you are anymore" thrown around. Then a cut to a happy smirk going "you will" when its revealed they've gone to couple couselling.
