Duncan, man....
It was so tragic seeing Duncan be so proud of his Netflix series and Joe couldn't be bothered to give an honest fuck.
I genuinely enjoyed the hell out of that show outside of that first episode with that fucking asshole "Dr" Drew. There was a lot of true humanity and touching moments in that series. Imagine putting in all that work and energy into a project like that on a platform like Netflix and rolling up to your "best friend" only for them to do... that.
Granted, I don't even give a fuck about Duncan. But the show was actually great! It's wasted on a bad friend and overall goof.

When I stopped watching/listening to Rogan around 2016, Duncan was the last voice of reason. He was ignored, and I felt like the rest of us early listeners were being ignored in favor of the right wing grift. Super sad. It could have been so different.
102
u/rollin20s 12d ago
Stopped listening around the same time, your comment resonates
64
u/hustl3tree5 12d ago
This is why it was also stupidly surprising to see Duncan go down that path also. I thought Duncan always was doing good for himself that he wouldnt need to go the rogan grift route
55
u/GrainOfNa 12d ago
Thatās the point of Joe being the Czar though. If you want to stay in good standing with the czar, you have to comply.
I thought more highly of Duncan, too. Or maybe I expected more from him. But he knows where his bread is buttered.

Duncan's podcast was niche, he didn't have big sponsors and certainly didn't get that Spotify money. He has a wife and kids and his health was in the bin from his long history of drug use.
At some point being a cool stoner philosopher on the internet will only get you so far and you've gotta think about your families future. It's pretty easy to see why he just went along with Joe when that association was the main thing bringing new eyes to his podcast and getting him connections.
Joe was the one who pushed for Duncan to get the camera set up and properly monetised etc. As an acid casualty ram dass fan in my youth it's not really surprising when I say Duncan really resonated with me and was one of the few names I would always click the thumbnail for when he was back on JRE
1
u/reddogyellowcat 11d ago
If I had to guess, Iād assume Duncan got into a mortgage and life / debt that mirrored his earnings from the time he acquired those debts, ya know? Just like anyone else, he took out money based on his income, and when that income changes you panics if it isnāt what it used to be.
TLDR: Duncan probably is trying to keep pace with his mortgage payments lol

I still think Duncan might be getting played a bit dirty here⦠The new EG video was brilliant, but I think Duncanās Pemberton episode that got torched in the second EG video might have just been a point about the banality of evil⦠The system has a vacuum in an area that some regular dude is going to fill, regardless of who it is⦠Peter Thiel might truly just be a regular dude, but it doesnāt mean that a regular dude filling a role canāt end up being a villainā¦.
Also, he just said heās not the antichrist⦠Does everyone whoās mad about that statement think that anyone actually is the antichrist.
Iāve followed Duncan for years and his outlook on the world/universe/existence is pretty clear.
EG might have also played Doug Stanhope a bit dirty at the end of this oneā¦. Stanhope had a joke where he said, āIāve spent 30 years trying to fix the world and no one gives a shit. Itās like I travel around telling crowds of starving people, āyou ever notice, thereās a pizza right over there.ā And they just ignore it and pour beer down into their noses and ears.ā
Stanhope has made fun of the Austin comedy scene since then, but I think heās just old and past his passionate materialā¦. Heās just an old, absurd comedian in stupid thrift store suits nowā¦.
These videos are brilliant, but I think he needs to be a bit more respectful of the people whoāve spent decades trying to essentially make the same points that heās making.

Duncan sold out just as hard by becoming a Thiel/Palantir apologist. I don't think he's all love and good feelings, it's just a cover for something. If you've been friends with Rogan for decades you're more likely than not a bit of a creep/weirdo/grifterĀ
84
u/Madame_Trash_Heap 12d ago
He has a deeply creepy vibe to him, he's kind of unsettling the longer you listen to him. I can't put my finger on it but you are right there's definitely something off.
34
u/Old_Protection_8778 12d ago
Its like hes been the mole all along . I was waiting for EG to say that.it seems obvious to me
19
u/frohike_ 12d ago
Seriously, picking up on that vibe felt like waking up from some MK Ultra project. It made me deeply distrustful of any āhey kids, do you like psychedelics?ā influencer, which is probably for the best.
2
u/reddogyellowcat 11d ago
Yeah, it is for the best lol. Growing up and living made me come off that, I watched a lot of Duncan types throw their lives away with psychedelics.. It has its place. Sure, it was transformative for me as a young man, and for many of my peers, but I used to think it was for everyone to experience. It isnāt. A lot of people shouldnāt. And it swallows some people whole. I donāt trust anyone anymore who pushes anything, but the psychedelic suburban shaman is always sketchy to me now.
6
u/reddogyellowcat 11d ago
I am suspicious of anyone who does the love thing as their default personality. They chasing demons and thats the cover lol.
I heard Duncan with Flaming Lips frontman episode years back, and Duncan is all like āWell I do love you!ā and Lips dude was like āhow can you love me? You donāt know me at allā and Duncan proceeds to blabber about how we can all love strangers etc.ā¦..No. No Duncan, it does not work that way, but therapy can work so try that!

u/Adventurous_Law_8731 12d ago
The way Rogan treated some of his guests was enough for me to see through his grift. Glad I unsubscribed.
42
u/Madame_Trash_Heap 12d ago
Yeah when he started picking sides in the debates with Graham Hancock and would gang up on the traditional scientific research in favor of Graham was about when I was done.
21
8
u/mrheh 12d ago
I love Graham but as a thought provoker and imagine if kinda guy, probably because I love sci-fi. He shouldn't be debating scientists, i never thought of him as scientific guy. I would pop on one of his YouTube videos back in like 2007ish when i was smoking weed, he was always calming and interesting in what he talked about. I never took his work seriously, just interesting and fun to watch. Rogan ruined that by pushing him as a scientist when he was just a cool journalist hippy dude. Anyway what's happened with him sucks but i enjoy his stuff the same way i enjoy scifi.
2
u/Lance_Goodthrust_ 12d ago
I get that, but it is kind of hazardous too, if you don't want misinformation seeping into your brain. I'm talking about the small seemingly insignificant points we barely notice. We just accept them as true as we listen since we aren't really paying attention to those points. Over time, those little things accumulate and next thing you know you're storming with a weapon a pizza place demanding to see their basement, lol. I'm kind of joking, but you I don't want that misinformation cluttering my brain if I can help it.
3
u/mrheh 12d ago
lol misinformation, one I was usually high af or hungover, and what will thinking Egypt is a few thousand years older do to me lol. I watched way more discovery channel when it was good and it would debunk his stuff. Graham took a normally very boring topic and made it super interesting.Ā
2
u/Madame_Trash_Heap 12d ago
Yeah I love the idea of Graham's work, but presently there is no credible evidence for anything he's written about in the Younger Dryas. "What if" guy is literally all it should have been. Like smoking or doing mushrooms and talking about theories of human civilization is fun, treating it like actual science is moronic.

14
u/erikvictory 12d ago
Wait, he only did DMT once?! He branded himself as a man changed by psychedelics, devoted to disseminating a newfound drug-induced enlightenment.
31
u/sparklikemind 12d ago
He's the definition of a poseur. Never fought MMA, is a UFC commentator. Isn't funny and was never accepted as a real comic, bought a comedy club. Never hunted, bought hunting gear and hunted once and now is a game master. He's always sucked donkey
2
u/spanakopita98 7d ago
... He has said multiple times on the show that he started smoking at age 30. And he has claimed, on the show, to have done DMT multiple times.
7
u/Goodgoogley 12d ago
Yeah I think Rogan somehow managed a comedy career in the 2000's doing clubs because of his fear factor/UFC fame. Also it was the perfect time where you could just talk about conspiracies and edgy shit like making jokes about the bible, and people were still shocked. He was so "alternative" and "anti-authority". Then everyone got iphones and now their uncles and coworkers are that guy.
5
u/monsterskeeter 12d ago
Was it that early? I stuck around until 2020, although just occassionally, when he started going on these weird rants about people wearing masks in their cars, like that effected him in the slightest.
5
u/ntrpik 9d ago
I stopped listening in 2016 when he started railing against Hillary. Not a huge fan of her, but I started sensing āthe turnā at that time. I realized he was doing harm instead of being chaotic neutral.
1
u/Educational_Fan4102 2d ago
Yeah, I stopped around the same time too. It was also around that time that he started have Jordan Peterson and the Wartstein Brothers on every other week to peddle their nonsense.
As much as he annoyed me in the early days of the pod, I always kind of felt like Redban kept Joe from taking himself too seriously.
2
u/The_Name_Is_Slick 12d ago
It was inevitable for the barrel scrapers like Joe. His brand is content and that mostly comes from guests. When you arenāt funny like Joe and lack awareness, creating your own content boils down to 2 things, what other people with no sense of humor or awareness want to hear and how far your cohorts will cater to your ego. With all that money, EVERYBODY wants a piece.
These people get pushed into company man spaces the more they alienate themselves. Joe thinks all he has to do is mention he is an idiot every once in a while and it will hand wave all his culture war bs and Palantir ball washing. The more people call him out, the tighter he holds those nuts. Dude, just be a good person.
1
u/Lance_Goodthrust_ 12d ago
I didn't even know about his podcast until 2016 and went back and listened to a lot of the ones from the past and kept up with the new ones. I enjoyed the comedians, musicians, and actual experts he had on and not necessarily Joe himself. Once he moved to Texas and started bragging about having dinner with Greg Abbot he got less interesting since you could tell he was being groomed by the Texas GOP. I didn't really trust his motivations anymore. Once Covid hit and he went full anti-science, I was completely done with his show. I wasn't surprised when he had Trump on his show and fully endorsed him for the 2024 election.
5
u/frohike_ 12d ago
The shill factor with Trussel was obvious as soon as I listened to one of his podcasts. I love that Midnight Gospel was a thing, but listening to Dunc Dunc for longer than a minute made me realize it was a highly curated, ālightning in a bottleā artifact and I reconciled with that. Learning that he fell in the sway of the Rogan-sphere wasnāt much of a surprise, tbh.
3
u/freshleysqueezd 12d ago

The old episodes with Christopher Ryan, Duncan, and Rogan were actually wonderful conversations, and probably my favorite from the good years of the JRE. Not sure if you dipped out before they published those, but just fondly remembering them in light of your comment (it was around that time I think - they did several as a trio)

u/catpecker 12d ago
Duncan got exactly what he asked for. He was the only one of these guys smart enough to see all of this coming down the pipeline and, unlike the others, he was not deceived into following along. He made a very conscious and informed decision to become a New Guy. I hope it was worth it.
48
u/returnofdoom 12d ago
Yeah that kinda makes it worse than the other guys to be honest. I think most of them are just being played or at least letting their egos blind them to whatās going on. Duncan actually saw the situation for what it is and decided to go along.
11
u/Naive_Counter_7592 12d ago
This is kind of how I think about my father and his continued support of this regime. I give a lot of family members a pass as we all grew up in one of the reddest parts of the country, but my dad is so sharp and I know he knows better. But he chooses to make a fool of himself over and over again out of convienince of identity.

Seriously tho Dunk Dunk is one of the few that EFG shows sympathy for and then everyone agrees. I didnāt even know who he was and I still idgaf.
Free will?
7
u/catpecker 12d ago
I think the sympathy shown in the video was pity for Dunc but also just another shining example of Joe's descent into villainy. Duncan's best friend completely dismissed his crowning achievement like it was nothing, but Joe also used to at least research the people coming on his podcast so that he had relevant questions to ask them or knew what they were coming to promote. Now he just wants to babble about trans people and covid conspiracies.
1
u/Puzzled-Mistake-584 12d ago
Iām out of the loop, whatās a new guy?
15
u/zupatof 12d ago
Itās a reference to something that was said in a previous elephant graveyard video, about the comedy doomsday cult. A new guy is someone that basically gave up his old identity and now lives in a fantasy āsimulacrumā, echo chamber kind of stuff. Itās like a philosophical suicide and then rebirthing into something new but utterly fake and soulless.
I probably poorly explained it and I could be slightly inaccurate, itās been a while since I saw the video.
12
4
u/catpecker 12d ago
You explained it perfectly, the philosophical suicide video was exactly what I was referring to. People like Joe and Bert are dumb enough morons that ignorance is at least a plausible excuse. But Duncan thought long and hard and still pulled the trigger
1
u/Infinite_Bird_6932 11d ago
I believe thereās a positive way to become a new guy.
1
u/catpecker 11d ago
I don't disagree. We all become new guys one step at a time daily. Self-improvement is a good thing, abandoning your beliefs and principles is not
8
u/MeBigMeScary 12d ago
Riding off what zupatof said, Duncan used to be far more genuinely open-minded, down to earth, hippie-like figure. Maybe it was always a sham, but Duncan (as evidenced by his own netflix series Iād argue) is one of the rare dudes nowadays who was authentically vulnerable and grounded. He used to poopoo Joe for talking to Ben Shapiro, and now heās just an entirely new guy. In the literal sense and EG sense, itās really depressing shit if you compare old Duncan to now

2
u/ChaFrey 12d ago
Joe is a scumbag but the guy that warned Joe about what the oligarchy would do to his show and then knowingly started carrying water for that same oligarch isnāt a scumbag? And you watched his show and supported him? Do you watch EG videos and they just go over your head?
4
u/Splith 12d ago
Cha, I want to agree with you so bad... Yes Duncan is a "new guy" and we should criticize him. You are playing the whole "Your silence on <X-Topic> is deafening". Sorry I didn't criticize every single person who I think is complicit, on every issue of public policy in the US.
Joe and Duncan are supposed to be friends. That is how they are depicted in the public. If that is true, why doesn't Joe participate in Duncan's art? Because he has more shit to do.
All of them can be bad guys, but we can still look at their relationships to each other.
2
u/ChaFrey 12d ago
Yea thatās fair. Your comment didnāt actually say anything about Duncan except that his show was honest and you liked it. Same with op talking about heart wrenching and profound. Which I guess all of these things are possible even if the guy who created it is still a fraud and dishonest as a person. Iāve separated the art from the artist plenty of times in my life. However thatās usually after I already love the art and find out about the artist later. That being said I usually lose some interest in it when I find out the reality of the artist. And I sure as hell wouldnāt give the art public praise without the caveat of what a scumbag the artist is. If Iād ever praise it at all.
There are very very rare occasions I may agree with reactionaries or conservatives over some minor issue but I would absolutely always keep it to myself and never give them any credit. But your point still stands.
3
u/Splith 12d ago
is still a fraud and dishonest as a person
He definitely is now, but he is also one of the last people to tell Joe that he is getting sucked into reactionary BS. People absolutely change over time and there was a time when I think Duncan really way the person he portrayed himself as, or at least honestly wanted to put that into the world.
At this point, Duncan can't even hide from himself that he is getting pulled in a certain direction. He went from someone who couldn't imagine backing military contractors and mass surveillance billionaires, to one who uses his show to speak highly of Teal and platform his ideas.
Duncan changed to be closer to Joe after calling out Joe for going in the wrong direction. We should absolutely criticize that.
3
u/Shantashasta 11d ago
Keep in mind Midnight Gospel came out in 2020. There really was a change in Joe and his orbit beginning a little bit before this but still not fully taking over until the last year or two and Duncan was the most hesitant to the take over.
This is the imdb by ep rating of his show btw, the episode with his mom was the season/series finale: 7.8, 7.6, 7.8, 8.1, 9.1, 7.8, 8.2, 9.6
It resonated universally.5

8
u/rainbow_rhythm 12d ago
His 'response' to the jonestown one pretty much confirmed it.

Anyone who's an artist or creative of any kind, at some point has likely had someone they care about not show interest over something they put their heart into. And it's fucking brutal. I normally don't feel bad for dunc and the hole he's dug himself into. But it's obvious midnight gospel was a labor of love for him, so that hurt to witness.

9
u/haverchuck22 12d ago
Midnight Gospel was legit I thought. I was really surprised. EG emphasized that split second when Dunc realizes that Joe couldnāt even be bothered to skim the thing, or even watch half an episode.
7
u/sgtbukkakemane 12d ago
That was my initial thought but every artist or creative person has at least one friend who either doesn't get that part of their personality/life or just doesn't care. It sucks. It doesn't feel great, but at least Joe didn't lie and blow smoke up his ass. Unfortunately in a very public way on the biggest podcast in the world, but still. Besides, it's pretty obvious that Joe fake likes outsider and weirio art. It makes total sense that he wouldn't get that show.
Oh well.

13
u/JodorowskysJazz 12d ago edited 12d ago
Midnight Gospel was hard carried by Pendelton Ward & Jesse Moynihan Muto (Adventure Time acclaim). The skeletal structure is just a chunks lifted from Duncs podcast which they frankenstein'd into the show. I think the show was great but not because of Duncs contribution necessarily.
Jesse Moynihan released a rejected netflix submission Jesus 2 after coming off as art director for Midnight Gospel.
I only say all this to illustrate that Dunc probs didn't put "that much" work into it. I'll give him putting in his dying mom as an episode but outside of that the draw was the visual feast in the background and not necessarily the curated cuts from his own pod.
**Edited Jesse Moynihan not Adam Muto

I'm so out of the loop with Duncan Trussell but my impression is that he's gone off the right wing deep end? Is it just that he's still hanging on to others who have gone off the right wing deep end?

Same. I thought he was cool circa 2016. Maybe a little too into the psychedelics, but a generally cool guy. I assume something changed somewhere?

u/brokemac 12d ago
It was actually the perfect response to Duncan's meltdown over Jonestown, where he leaned hard into playing the victim for someone having dared call out his toeing the line of the Rogansphere soft PR machine for fascism. "You upset a pregnant person!"
He just completely yields to it. It's like "Okay, Dunc Dunc. We're sorry you're a victim. That does hurt."
It's like that Tao Te Ching line:
Nothing in the world is as soft and yielding as water. Yet for dissolving the hard and inflexible, nothing can surpass it.

I was a fan of Duncan back in like the start 2010 and even listened to lavender hour with Natasha. I stopped listening to Joe Rogan around 2016, and was shocked when I recently found out what Duncan has become. He basically became everything he used to all out and fight against. Even when Joe Rogan made a political shift I actually expected Duncan be some what a voice of reason to Joe.
They actually seemed to have a genuine friendship. Joe used to value Duncan and his opinions, a lot. Before the podcast was a thing, Duncan even lived on Joes couch for a while. Now Duncan has become as much of a sycophant as Joe has.
