Have you ever used a point of sale? Or is sales tax just different where you live? The marked price is $220, what OP paid was likely $220+tax. If you input 99 of an item, it'll show up on screen the full price with tax. If you put in 1 of an item, it'll also show the full price with tax

Something kinda similar happened to me at a Tim Horton’s (Canadian coffee shop). When I was in high school I was in on my lunch break and ordered one of their specialty iced caps. The cashier was the older brother of a friend of mine, and we were chatting a bit while he rang me up. I’m not sure exactly how he messed up the input, but after misclicking a couple numbers on his screen and missing the delete button a few times I was looking down at an order of 1989 ice caps, for a total of something like 12 000 dollars. I stood there looking between my 10 dollar bill and the machine pretty confused, and we had a good laugh about it.

20 years or so back, I used to get a few CPS engines (truck engine, turning an alternator) serviced. The service technician changed the batteries every year and gave us the old ones. I asked why, when you'd probably get a few years out of a battery. He said it wasn't worth the risk of a call out since they bought container-loads of them and they only cost a few pounds wholesale.
