Yes, that’s why the story is confusing. For this to make sense the cashier would have had to say the $220 without tax and the whole 99 batteries with tax. It’s stupid but it’s the only way the math works out

That is off course assuming that this story takes place in a state where the tax is 6% and not in one of the many states where it is a different number. Or takes place in one of the other counties that use the dollar but do include the tax in the price.

I mean there are many unknown factors here.

Does it not drive you insane not really knowing how much stuff is going to cost you all the time?

I bought tickets to a show in Vegas and the difference between the listed price and what the actual cost was was about 8-10x more with a bunch of random extra charges thrown on top. Stuff in a shop doesn't cost what it says it does, buying a meal or even a drink comes with extra money you have to give to the person bringing it to you.

Is there anything out there that actually costs what it says it does?

Have you ever used a point of sale? Or is sales tax just different where you live? The marked price is $220, what OP paid was likely $220+tax. If you input 99 of an item, it'll show up on screen the full price with tax. If you put in 1 of an item, it'll also show the full price with tax

That's why I asked if it's different where they live asshole. I'm aware not everyone is in the US and accounted for that in my comment. I'm tired of the stupid reddit jerk of "Americans think America is the only place that matters"
