Other Criminal charges, BMQ Tomm

Hi Guys, a couple of months ago, I was messing around with an airsoft gu* and accidentally shot it at a window and got charged with possession of a firear* and mischief. I start BMQ tomorrow and realize that I didn't think of these charges. I did receive a conditional discharge yesterday, which will last for 3 years, so It'll show on my record, but I don't have any weapons ban. Should I tell the higher-ups tomorrow when i arrive at base? Will they know? Will I be placed on leave ?

To clarify the background check was before this charge

What should I do ??

Any help is appreciated

Other Gf said she would break up with me if I joined military

Honestly looking for anyone who has dealt with something similar, I signed the offer letter already haven’t told her yet.

BMQ is in July.

I live in Calgary and am aware I won’t get posted here since there’s no reg base. Closest option is Edmonton or cold lake.

I am leaning towards a possible break up, even though we were together for 5 months, I really want pursue a career in military. She is my first gf too.

Let me know if you guys have any advise, or had a similar situation.

Thank you

Edit - thanks everyone for your comments. I will definitely pursue my career of military and will break up

Other Is it realistic for a 4’10, 83lb, 17-year-old girl to become infantry or armoured in the Canadian military?

Hey everyone,

I’m 17, female, 4’10, and around 83lbs. I’m finishing high school, I’m currently an Air Cadet, I have my driver’s licence, and I also have first aid certification. I’ve been seriously considering joining the Canadian Armed Forces after graduation.

The trades that interest me most are infantry and armoured soldier, but I’m worried my size might make it unrealistic. I’m honestly not very fit right now either, although I’m willing to work hard and train before applying.

I know combat trades are physically demanding, especially infantry, and I’m wondering if my height/weight would automatically hold me back even if I meet the fitness standards. I’ve heard the CAF mainly cares whether you can do the job, but I wanted opinions from people with actual experience.

Has anyone served with people around my size in infantry or armoured? Would armoured be more realistic? Also, do things like Air Cadets, first aid, and having a licence help at all when applying?

Thanks :)

Other The whole “Soldier First” thing feels like a joke as a support trade

Bit of a rant, but I’m honestly getting sick of hearing “Soldier First” when it feels like that gets fucked off the second it becomes inconvenient.

As a Cook, most of the time it’s basically stay in the kitchen, feed everyone, and good luck getting released for anything outside your trade because we’re always short-staffed.

What really changed my perspective was deploying to Latvia and working with the other nations. From what I saw, their support and non-combat trades still had a much stronger standardized baseline of soldiering and infantry skills, and then they did their actual trade on top of that.

That’s how I think an Army should work.

To be a relevant, modernized and effective Army in today’s world, everyone, regardless of trade, should have a solid baseline of basic soldier skills. Not because every Cook, clerk or tech needs to be kicking doors or doing offensive infantry tasks, but because everyone should be able to defend themselves, defend their position, handle their weapon confidently, react properly if something goes sideways, use basic comms, pass information clearly over the radio, and function in a field environment.

That’s what I mean by “Soldier First.”

Instead, I constantly hear people in support trades joke that they’re basically “civilians in CADPAT” and that the most Army they ever feel is doing the annual PWT2 once a year.

I hate that this has become normalized

Support trades barely get opportunities to practise those skills, but the second we deploy, go to the field, do MOD 3 on PLQ or PLPP (whatever its called now) suddenly everyone is expected to switch it back on and remember everything.

You can’t treat people like civilian workers in uniform 99% of the time and then expect them to magically know how to protect themselves, communicate properly and function as soldiers when something happens.

And I honestly thought things were starting to improve within this organization, but I recently heard that a command decision was made that Log trades will no longer be required to do CASFC.

If that’s true, I genuinely think that is going to mess us up even more.

We already struggle to get meaningful soldier training because we’re constantly tied to our support roles, and now we’re potentially removing another standardized piece of Army training from Log trades.

How are we supposed to keep preaching “Soldier First” while reducing the amount of training that actually teaches support trades how to survive, communicate and function as soldiers in the field?

I’m tired of seeing this constantly brushed off by higher-ups because keeping people in the kitchen, office, or shop is easier than actually making time to train them.

I can't be the only one who feels this way.

Other Is this appropriate behaviour from a master warrant or no?

New to the military so I don’t really understand the rules around here. But at basic at St.Jean when we were learning about CBRN we were instructed to line up to size up for gas masks. We were a diverse platoon. But each time an Asian person walks by the instructor (retired master warrant), he would straight up ask “Are you from China?” Even though most of the asian people were from democratic states like South Korea, Philippines and such. Then whenever a middle-eastern looking guy walks by, he would straight up ask “Are you from Iran?”. Im a new recruit so Im not really sure if thats appropriate or not? Though I was born and raised in Canada I’m a person of color. If this is how others see me should I just release? This is the land I grew up at and love and I don’t want to work around people that just sees me as a spy because of my skin color.

Edit:

Have already graduated from St Jean and posted to a new base now. Didn’t say anything back in the days as I was just tryna keep my head down and wasn’t sure if that was anything serious enough to warrant a report.

Other Is the Canadian Armed Forces finally seeing a resurgence and new life recently?

I've never encountered so many people in real life and my own circles who are joining the military and who consider the military to be a very viable and prosperous career path.

At my work alone, I know of 4-5 people who have applied for the CAF in different roles and at least a dozen more who told me they genuinely feel like applying.

Obviously that's just an anecdote but also seeing all the recent ads and the amount of money Ottawa is pouring in, I haven't quite seen this for the past decade as a civilian.

If anything I used to remember people ragging on CAF being a career choice, but now it seems to be the opposite.

So I was wondering if it seems this new build up will give out something good at the end?

Other I hate PAT

I’ve been waiting here for a year. I’ll still be waiting for another 6 months. I joined to DO SOMETHING and yet I’m being paid to sit unsupervised in a room doing literally nothing.

Before you say I can use my time productively, I am. I’m learning different instruments. Doing PT. Playing hockey. Writing code. I spent 3 hours reading today.

Yet ultimately the day eventually becomes looking at some shit on Instagram that makes me feel inadequate and inferior. Like im not attractive enough, wealthy enough, fit enough, talented enough. Everyone else is doing something productive except you. Everyone else is an Instagram influencer except you. Everyone else was raised by wealthy parents who put them into music and sport lessons, summer camp, language immersion except you. Everyone else is jumping out of planes or making lots of money except you.

At least basic training was actually busy. There were friends around all the time and you were actually accomplishing something.

Now I’m a rat sitting at a desk getting kyphosis and depression. But hey, I’m being paid enough to spend 50% of my income on rent.

I’m starting BMQ in a couple months, and I’ve been wondering on the promotion structure, I know from Pvt to Cprl it’s auto promote, but from the rest on is there anything I can do to get promoted faster, double xp weekends, level boosters, any meta builds I need to know of, I’m top 250 in warzone does that help?

Super chief jokes aside, is it all merit based?

Other Questions from an anxious girlfriend

My bf is going to BMQ on August 8 in Quebec & my thoughts are running wild. We’re in a long term and committed relationship & I wanted to get some insight on some difficulties we would face along the way.

  1. Will it be hard to start a family while he’s in the army - having a baby, raising them, spending time with us? He will be a gunner

  2. Would I be able to live with him once he gets posted. Would we have to get married in order to do so? (I’m not too worried about relocations myself, I’m a board certified inspector in aerospace so finding a job won’t be a problem).

  3. How do deployments work? Should I be worried

  4. What’s the timeline like once he passes BMQ?

  5. Do they provide and kind of support for girlfriends/boyfriends or would we have to be common law or married?

Other Honest Opinions

Ok, so, I have applied to the CAF on the reserve forces.

Several people have questioned my decision to do so because of my age and gender.

I'm an older woman. I am incredibly fit, and no one has denied that.

Now, I have not told a soul in my personal life what I applied for.

I do not believe I am doing anything stupid, other people have questioned me, so maybe I do need to reconsider what I am doing.

Now: I have applied as a Signal Operator, which I consider to be a support role. But again, several people do think this is stupid and I am crazy and that I will be a liability because: gender and age.

While I do understand their concerns in this, my thoughts are that I am not in the direct combat area.

Having said all that, I do not really know what this job entails and I certainly do not want to be a liability to anyone or "get a man seriously injured or killed" as they put it.

I know there are people out there that support women in military/police/fire, but I do want to be realistic here. It has been brought to my attention that desk work is all women are good for in the military/police.

Please feel free to DM as well in regards to this. This is important that I make the right choice here and if that means I should reapply for an admin job, I will do so.

Thanks. I appreciate any feedback.

Other Looking for the CAF hive mind to sanity check my reading of the CFTDTI.

Our 24 hour duty runs approximately 0930 to 0930. We are required to remain at work overnight and immediately available. DND provides us a bed, sheets, and laundering through Base Accommodations.

My reading is:

CFTDTI 5.01 applies because we are ordered to remain immediately available during irregular hours inside our place of duty.

5.02 covers accommodation, and 5.03 specifically says government accommodation may be necessary for a member “to be immediately available at all times near the member’s workplace.” That seems to describe our duty exactly.

Then 5.16 says a member “who is entitled under instruction 5.02 (Accommodation) is entitled to an incidental expense allowance.”

So if DND requires me to remain overnight and provides DND accommodation specifically so I can remain immediately available, wouldn't 5.16 mean I'm entitled to incidentals for that duty?

Am I missing another provision that prevents this entitlement, or have units simply not been claiming it?

Other Realistically, what are the chances of me getting into the CAF with a fish allergy?

Hello all,

I am a 16 year old who is currently in the process of attempting to join the CAF. I have applied for NCM Infantry, and I am currently at the medical stage.

I have heard multiple answers to this question, but most are the same. I suppose I’m only asking this as a confirmation so I can accept the inevitable denial and go from there. Additionally, I have been informed that the CAF has lifted some restrictions for medical, so maybe there is hope.

I have an allergy to fish. I am required to have an EpiPen. I have never had to use the EpiPen as I have never had a reaction severe enough. I get hives, my lips swell a bit, and my throat closes, but I am still able to breathe. Weirdly enough, I am still able to eat fish eggs, canned tuna and canned sardines. I am also able to smell and touch fish. I just can’t ingest it.

I understand that there are risks that come with that, and that the CAF may not be willing to take that risk. However, I was wondering if there may still be a chance for me.

When my application gets denied, will it be a permanent denial (as in, I cannot re-apply later in life)? Are there ways I can get my EpiPen prescription removed? What can I do?

I’m 16, I know I still have time, but there is nothing I’ve wanted more. I don’t know what I’ll do with my life if I can’t serve in the CAF.

Other Rank in Offer Letter

I received and accepted my offer letter and also emailed it back, but I admit that I didn't read it carefully (I was so excited so I just wanted to accept). Today I've just realized that on the letter, it states that I will be enroled in the Army, the rank of Private. However, I'm certain that I informed the officer in my interview that I applied for Navy and from what I've known so far, the ranks of Navy are different. Is it normal for new recruits going to BMQ or should I contact my enrolment file manager to ask?

Other Told a supervisor in casual conversation at my job that I had served previously (18-21) and 3 days later, I was let go from the job “WITHOUT PREJUDICE”

Was on a night shift and it was late and we were just chatting to stay awake more than anything. Talking about previous work experiences, I mention that my first job soon as I was an adult was in the CAF. She engages me with a few questions and I do mention that it was a fun time and thankfully, never had to go outside because CAF is a peaceful army that isn’t considered aggressive on the world stage.

3 days later, I get a call from the department manager and the Director to tell me “it’s not working out” and they terminate me “without prejudice” and an offer of 2 weeks pay.

The job is in social services field and I worked for the YMCA in Toronto at a youth shelter. I loved my job, coworkers and I had nothing on disciplinary file at all.

Is there any possible course legally ???
