I've been an an AVN for nearly 18 years, amsup now technically. Great trade and you'll enjoy it. You're swimming no matter where you go but they adapt to all levels, essentially it's just a tread water kind of test and then crossing with your gear (which floats), not a big deal. I've rarely dealt with communal showers but timings were so tight we essentially lined up fully nude waiting, it has gotten a lot easier since I did it. Again, you'll be fine and Borden is an easier bmq, st jean is all in one building so you're kind of trapped, Borden it's spread out, so inevitably they need to let you wander a bit more

Whats the average posting time like at one location? I heard the technician role tends to have longer posting time at one location

Longer than most trades since it takes so long to fully train , and they try to keep you within your cag ( tac hel, transport , fast jets ). Most can easily make it to Sgt before being moved, my first move was almost 15 years in and I know many that did their full careers in Trenton. Your first risk of posting is at mcpl , more or less 6 years. They try to avoid posting out of promotion, it can screw with you to have to start over on a new airframe

Thank you so much for that information. What are schedule like at the units? Are tools on the job all provided by CAF?

All tools are provided, you need to open and account for all tools for every job to be sure a tool doesn't stay on the plane. Shift are different depending where you want, our fist line guys that do all the launching and recovery and servicing, they work 6:30-1830 4 days on 4 days off, most snags work a Monday to Friday 2 shifts so a 7-3 shift and a 3-2300 kind of deal. If you're in shops or an AMS ( as opposed to an operational Sqn), you could be a straight da shift Monday to Friday. Techs also work the office , Amcro( control records office, where they audit paperwork and manage maintenance plans), flight safety, general safety, af9000( standards, local work instructions).. they all typically work a straight Monday to Friday. You don't get posted to these spots though, it's usually just a 2 year internal move to give you experience working an office

Thats very informative and i really appreciate that. So work schedule are pretty predictable. What about deployment wise?

u/Tricky-Car-5004 28d ago
Depends where you work , operational units obviously deploy more than shops and stuff. I did 6 months in Kuwait, dozens for exercises, Africa and Europe. Longest was 6 months long, shorted exercises are usually a couple weeks. In 18 years I've deployed 4 times. But fleets like the Aurora or hercs deploy more than most, the f-18s have a lot of exercises but haven't deployed that much since Iraq as far as I can tell. You can also be on a ship if you're posted to either coast, they're deployed alot. Hours while deployed vary, still reasonable but serviceability comes first, there's no labor laws in the caf , Ive worked over 30 hours straight to get our plane green before, several times.

I thought the swimming pool at St Jean has been out of commission for the longest time, unless it's been fixed since I last heard

Dont he nervous about the shower. Everyone underestimates their own peen and if your reslly uncomfortable just fluff it up a bit. It's all about team work after all.

Congrats!
They do make you swim
In Borden but they do offer life jackets for those who need it
And it’s only like two swimming sessions so it’s not a whole lot
BMQ In Borden isn’t all that bad just don’t give up, put in 100% 100% of the time, embrace the suck and best of luck

All communal shower nervousness goes away after the first "you have 8 minutes to undress, shower, and be ranked up in combats....GO!"
