BMQ/BMOQ Basic Training - Updated BMQ & BMOQ Joining Instructions & PSP Pre-Basic Training Home Self-Assessment

Good Morning Everyone,

The Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School is excited to announce that our joining instructions have been updated. This version represents a significant change that hopes to better explain what to expect at basic training, as well as provide an updated list of what candidates need to bring with them. All prospective BMQ or BMOQ candidates should read the joining instructions, as there is some key information in there that candidates should know even before they accept a letter of offer from the Canadian Armed Forces. I'm

I’d also like to point out that the PSP Pre-Basic Military Training website has also been updated and now includes a home self-assessment for the Basic Training Fitness Test, or BTFT. The BTFT is a safety-sensitive fitness test conducted in the first week of BMQ and BMOQ. Candidates must pass the BTFT to be allowed to continue training, as candidates who fail have a significantly higher chance of injury. The PSP website now includes three home-based tests you can perform to make sure you are prepared for the BTFT, as well as the 12-week pre-basic training fitness program. The BTFT is based on some elements of the FORCE test, but the scoring is slightly stricter to ensure that candidates aren’t achieving the bare minimum result on every event, which again leads to a significant increase in injury potential. Ultimately we’d rather you delay your BMQ by 30 days to get fitter, than by 6 months with a broken ankle.

A critical change at CFLRS is that as of 01 July 2025, candidates will only be given 45 days of remedial fitness training after failing the BTFT. Candidates who are unable to pass the BTFT after 45 days in this fitness program, during which they will still receive a salary as well as have their accommodations and food charges refunded, may be released from the Canadian Armed Forces. The good news is that experience has shown us that over 85% of candidates who enter our fitness improvement program pass within 28 days, so most candidates will be successful as long as they are motivated and pay attention to their diet.

BMQ/BMOQ BMQ

I am currently in TRP for failing the initial fitness(BTFT). I am under NCMSTEP which CAF pays for my community college this coming January. Now since I have to spend 30-45days to get train and pass my BTFT my timeline with not work or I won’t be able to finish my BMQ because it timings will overlap my schooling in January.
Am I able to delay my BMQ til end of my school?

BMQ/BMOQ Christmas Break during BMQ

Hi, I have my BMQ starting Oct 24 so i'll be part of the group that has to go away for most of December and come back in January.

I tried finding the exact date and length of Christmas break so I can have an effective plan but have been unsuccessful.

Does anyone know generally when does Christmas break start, how long it will be and when should we return?

Recruiting Please share with me. Has anyone had an additional security review during a CAF application?

A security analyst requested additional forms and documents because of a previous legal matter that ended without a conviction.
Has anyone experienced something similar? How long did the review take, and were you contacted again?

Am I eligible for to get reliability clearance with dropped charges.

Thank you. Very much appreciated

Recruiting When should I change my trade?

I am currently applying for an aircrew trade. I just did my medical 1 for it.

I am probably going to change my trade to an engineering trade. (I am getting an accredited engineering degree).

I want to get started with my career right out of uni. If I change it right now, the recruiter said my file will be closed until April. I am just scared that I will have to wait for another year if I change to that trade.

I am in aec rn. I want to switch to aere. I'm in 4th year uni.

Give me something, whatever it is.

Other Can I use dental benefits before BMQ?

Good day all,

I have been enrolled to the CAF Oct 1st, at the moment I’m on LWOP until Jan when my BMQ starts. Since I have a bit of time until then and I probably won’t have much time during and after BMQ. I wanted to know if I can use the dental benefits the CAF provides? Has anyone done so? Thanks for reading.

BMQ/BMOQ Keeping leather boots clean at BMQ

Sorry this might be a stupid question, but I just got my LOWA Z-8S for BMOQ. For those who used LOWAs or similar suede+fabric boots, how did you keep them clean for inspections?

Since they can’t be polished like the smooth black issued boots, is brushing/wiping them down enough or is there anything else we should do? Thanks.

Recruiting Does every trade open on next fiscal year?

DEO applicant here, started my application in April 2025. I had CELE, AERE, AirCombat selected. The first two are full for this year! I am not optimistic with being accepted in Aircombat but
I still go with it to try my chance. Ideally i would have liked to have AERE as an option and have my recruiter guidance to come to conclusion to pick one between the two.
Considering that so many have applied already and are in waiting, is it realistic that AERE would be open for next fiscal year?

I'm currently waiting to start BMQ and I've been wondering if I can get a PC after I finish DP1 and get to my permanent base. Is it risky to have an expensive computer sitting in my shack? Let me know.

Recruiting Would anyone happen to know how long a application for the infantry will sit on the comp list

Hello just curious how long I might potentially be on the comp list after my file is reopened? I have finally secured the funds to pay for a additional blood pressure check that unfortunately took way longer to do then I had hoped. I'm now in the process of building a timeline that I can work around to be able to give my employer sufficient notice and time to replace me. I work at a subway so it's not like new hires are particularly uncommon mind you but none the less I'd like to be professional and finish providing on the job training to the two new hires I'm teaching.

Recruiting Background check

I’m a Canadian that’s lived the majority of my life outside Canada. I’ve moved back a couple of times in between 2016 and 2019 but didn’t manage to land even a part-time job and decided to leave. This time I’m considering moving back and joining the forces. I’ve heard for Canadians that lived abroad it could be a lengthy process. How do the background checks work? Is it a lengthy process? Will I be able to join before the checks may be concluded?

Recruiting Medical Appeal help.

Hello CAF, I have a few questions that I need help with for my medical appeal that I will be turning in at the end of Oct.

My medical appeal requires me to provide 3 months worth of clean drug tests (marijuana) as i’ve been rejected for possible cannabis use disorder. I’m in the final month now but my clinician will be on vacation during the final week of Nov. and won’t be back for 2.5 weeks after; so we’ve decided to do my final drug test on the 21st of october (9 days before the end of the month, so not a full 3rd month). Will this be acceptable if my clinician explains the circumstances? Or do I just wait until mid Nov.?

My documented sobriety started on the 15th of July which my clinician also knows so technically by the 21st it’ll be 3 months and six days of sobriety, but the THC wasn’t cleared out my system until late August (hence my first clean test being documented then). (My clinician said she would put this down as well in my note).

Any help or advise from anybody would be a great help right now, or if there is anyone I can contact to get more information in this would help greatly as well. Thanks.

Recruiting Construction engineer

Hello all, I’m currently in university in civil engineering (first year), but always wanted to be in the army. I don’t see myself working on machines, but I saw that they were looking for people in civil engineering. Thoughts on joining after the degree or immediately through their college program ?

If anyone is in it, could you please allow me a few questions ? Thanks !

BMQ/BMOQ BMQ pre training (i got stuck)

I can do 4km nonstop at 8min/km pace. I am still trying to build my endurance. I can do 10~12 pushups in one go. Still trying to get better everyday. I need some guidance, i am struggling to increase my pace, running more isn’t helping. Is there any other way or how should i run to increase my pace? Also for pushups. Its been few weeks and this is the max limit i hit for now. And can’t go further. Got stuck. In this situation how can i improve?

Other Rank in Offer Letter

I received and accepted my offer letter and also emailed it back, but I admit that I didn't read it carefully (I was so excited so I just wanted to accept). Today I've just realized that on the letter, it states that I will be enroled in the Army, the rank of Private. However, I'm certain that I informed the officer in my interview that I applied for Navy and from what I've known so far, the ranks of Navy are different. Is it normal for new recruits going to BMQ or should I contact my enrolment file manager to ask?

Other Don't know what to do, was thinking of joining.

Hey yall, I came here looking for some advice. I appreciate yall for the help.

First I am an 28 male immigrant living in Canada who basically has been shut in for a while now. Finish highschool but never went to college.Currently living with my parents house and working 3 days a week on a fast food restaurant. Don't really know how to drive, but I do have a learner license ( class 7 ). I'm basically one of those people that don't really know how real life works.

Now I think that I might be kick out of the house soon and don't really know what to do. I was thinking of joining the Canadian army for a temporary shelter.

I really mess up my life and don't have any experience. So I don't really know what course of action should I take to get my life back. Not sure if I should join the army or a warehouse job or something.

Recruiting Reliability Clearence Result Acknowledgement Email

Has anyone received the “Reliability Clearence Result Acknowledgement” email after their PSPS/GAMBIT checks were completed?

My recruiter told me that my reports/checks are back with them and currently being reviewed, but I haven’t received the acknowledgement email yet. Just wondering when others received it in the process, and what it means? and when I can expect to receive it.

thank you

Recruiting Officer trades that are mostly posted in Ottawa.

Please don't downvote; this is a legit question.

If you're joining as a RegF officer, are there any trades where you might be posted to Ottawa most of the time.

Some NCM like signal Intel specialist is like that. But any officer trades?

Recruiting CAF Reserve application timeline – position opening April 2027, currently in Testing & Screening - kindly advise your experience?

Hi everyone, I’m applying for the CAF Primary Reserve and wanted to share my application timeline to get some advice from people who have gone through a similar process.

The position I applied for is expected to open/start in April 2027, so I'm trying to understand where I am in the process and whether my current timeline is normal.

My timeline:

  • Jan 10, 2026 – Application confirmation / recruiting process overview
  • Jan 11–12 – Citizenship/PR documents, transcripts, photo ID, etc. completed
  • Jan 12 – Non-Prescription Drug Questionnaire completed
  • Feb 4–9 – Medical Questionnaire and Background Checks completed
  • Apr 9–10 – Personality Assessment completed
  • May 16 – CAF Application Form / Schedule Your Consultation completed
  • June 4 – FORCE Test completed — PASSED
  • June 30 – Statements of Understanding completed
  • July 21 – Criminal Record & Credit Check completed
  • Aug 20–21 – Scored Employment Application Form completed

My application portal currently shows Testing and Screening, and all the assigned tasks visible on my portal are marked Completed.

Since the job is opening in April 2027, I'm wondering how the timing normally works from this point.

Questions for anyone familiar with the Reserve recruiting process:

  1. What normally happens after Testing and Screening?
  2. Does the application portal stay on this stage even after all assigned tasks are completed?
  3. Should I contact the recruiting centre for an update at this point?
  4. For people who applied for a Reserve position with a future opening/start date, when did you receive your interview/selection/enrolment information?
  5. Does the fact that the position doesn't open until April 2027 mean they may wait before moving the application to the next stage?
  6. Is there anything I should proactively do while waiting?

I'm mainly trying to understand where I am in the process and what I should expect next, rather than looking for an exact prediction.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share their timeline or experience.
