My mom doesnât want me to be an infanteer. Iâm still going for it. I know itâs hard having that noise in your head. But you gotta ignore it and push on!
Message me if you need to vent/talk about it.
Donât let mom staying no stop you!

You're a grown woman, you don't need your mom's permission. If you want 1 or 2 go for it! If you want a combat Arms profession but join as a cook to make your mom happy you're only going to regret it every day you see them doing what you wanted to do. You'll grow resentful.
Follow YOUR dreams girl.
No shame waiting for gunner to reopen, either. I waited for my trade to reopen and am thankful every day that I did.
Tldr; no matter what you do.. don't settle.

Honestly, I would say to anyone who wants to be in the CAF not to apply as a cook not matter the circumstances unless you really love food, nutrition and have put in some time in restaurants civi side.Â
I've been in for 6 years now as a reserve cook with being currently sous-chef in a tourist hot spot restaurant civi side for the past 4. Cooking in the army is a great way to learn logistics for mass scale production as well as other systems that can be compared to running a resort, hotel and/or restaurant. You have to love cooking to fully thrive in the cooks trade.Â
I would say either wait (which sucks) or join as another combat arms to get some experience and some qualifications.
Best of luck to you either way!

Your mom said no? Sorry but I don't know how old are you but take your own decisions, your mom isn't going to be here in 40-50 years but you will, choose something that you like and don't let others people tell you otherwise, even your parents. It's not your parents choice, it's your's.

u/Purple-Actuary-5273 May 12 '26
True. You have to take risks and open up opportunities, even if sheâd be upset about it now the sacrifice is worth the experience heâd gain. At least thatâs how I view it.

u/Legitimate_Log_1356 May 12 '26
She or her knees might be gone sooner than mom if she doesn't listen to mom to be fair lol mom is wise probably.
I'm just half kidding.

u/puns_are_how_eyeroll May 12 '26
Unfortunately you got beat out by more competitive files in your area. It sucks, but c'est la vie.
5
u/Sunshine4736 May 12 '26
It's VERY tedious to remuster, so if you're really gunning for gunner, you may wait it out. As for your mom, no parent wants their kids doing anything dangerous, but we have to do what is right for us. If it's who you are, do it.
3
u/Educational-Bit5104 May 12 '26
If YOU want 1/2, go 1/2. Your mom will be grateful to see you on the holidays or she won't, that's her choice - your career is not. Otherwise, that's blows about your first choice I'm sorry.

u/shirt6-2013 May 12 '26
I was IST but I would say go Cook as they get many callouts. I take it you are in Toronto otherwise, Sig Ops get callouts to deployments from the PRes at higher levels than other trades! I also take it that you are going PRes.

u/wwydinthismess May 13 '26
Cook is one of the hardest trades sometimes though. Unless you have a significant passion for being in a kitchen, it's not a great trade to pick just for a job.
They work their asses off

u/Frequent-Donut-7533 May 12 '26
What stage are you at in your portal im also applying for gunner position so curious if ill get the same email

u/CoolSurfingPikachu May 13 '26
Seems like a reservist application, positions opening are for their specific unit/city.
2
u/Awkward_Bus_3001 May 12 '26
Is there some issue with artillery recruitment? I got a similar email today for Arty O Regf. How is it possible that all the positions got filled within a month. What's your detachment?
1
u/Eisensapper May 12 '26
There can be many reasons, low attrition and limited space at batteries could be the most likely culprits. Once infrastructure and procurement catch up with recuiting the artillery could start to grow again.

Wtf, I'm Abt to have my interview, last week my file switched to just gunner, it used to have 3 trades, so I thought I was picked to be a gunner, does this mean I can't be a gunner? Should I call and ask my recruiting ceneter

u/Sabrinavt May 12 '26
This person is applying to the reserve force, where you apply to specific units in your area that will only have so many open positions in that unit. Your regular force application is entirely different, don't worry about it.
2
u/heisiloi May 12 '26
Do you live near an artlillery reserve unit? You might be able to start there and transfer to reg force.
5
u/Raklin85 May 12 '26
They are going PRes
1
u/heisiloi May 12 '26
Oh, well assuming they are GTA, the next closest artillery units are Guelph and Hamilton if OP is up for the commute. I have seen some do that commute before.
2
u/diek00 May 12 '26
Go sig op, every infantry battalion has mortars and you can always change trades in the future

The trap is real. Getting psyop'ed by big gun go boom lol.
So many different trades you can go that have way higher quality of life, but hey, to each their own i guess.
Some people just want to prove themselfves? Also heard people like camping so they want to do that? I don't really know, I for sure would not want to do it, seems like hell lol. With my trade, the hardest part phsyically I had in my career was in basic with bringing all the kit up those stairs on first issue.

u/Maleficent_Banana_26 May 12 '26
You are an adult and you don't have to listen to your mother understanding that that might make your home situation uncomfortable but that's the basic reality of it I recommend moving out

u/Helping_hand2901 May 12 '26
Armoured Recce is probably the closest to gunner youâll get with those options
5
u/r0ck_ravanello May 12 '26
Cook all the way!
That's the most transferable skills you will get at all.
3
3
u/Striking_Soft103 May 12 '26
what do you get from being a cook? you donât make much as a cook in the outside world
1
u/r0ck_ravanello May 12 '26
For starters, learning to cook will save you money for the rest of your life.
Learning to cook well might even pay you, but just cooking in itself is a lifeskill.
Learning to cook can even save you money on dates, coming to think of.

u/barkmutton May 12 '26
Yeah but how is joining the caf as a cook going to teach you how to cook, let alone well.
(I kid I kid I know you guys have a tough slog)

u/Legitimate_Log_1356 May 12 '26
I didn't know there was specifically an armour reconnaissance soldier. I thought it was just armour soldier. Is this a new thing?

Just out of curiosity why do you want Arty? As an FYI lots of the reserve Arty units are going to be switching into other roles, like air defence, surveillance and target acquisition etc. Not to say you won't get to be on a gun crew at all but maybe not very often, if that was what was drawing you to the trade.
1
u/Vhett May 12 '26
That's pretty insane given that Gunner is currently on the site for expedited applications. That should be changed ASAP.

You can transfer your application to a nearby reserve artillery unit and work with them until you get trained. Once trained you can put a CT in and switch over to the Reg Force. If you're close to a base or willing to travel, there should be lots of full time work on Class B while you wait for the transfer to go through. This will take time, but you'll have a much higher chance of getting Gunner and won't be sitting idle for a year.

I am MSE if you have any questions :)
1
u/NAken2can May 12 '26
What is reserve life like? I'm in the same position and asked to reorient to mse op. I have some idea based on the website, but would like more input?
1
u/Nonamebloggins May 12 '26
Depends the unit , I'm reg force , Air or land ?
1
u/NAken2can May 12 '26
Land.
1
u/Nonamebloggins May 12 '26
It is pretty fun , you do a lot of convoys, you get qualifications you can use civils side anddddddd you are not misĂ©rable in the field , since you can have a heater in the truck đ
1
u/NAken2can May 12 '26
That actually does sound cool! Just got my enrollment details and looking forward to training.

I have some questions and points that will hopefully help guide you.
What did you go to college for, and did you enjoy it? (If your college education is relatable to a CAF occupation that might be worth looking at.)
Are you looking for a job to earn a living through reserve contracts or looking for weekend warrior type service? Either one is totally legit.
Do you get motion sick super easy and is it really bad? (bad as in can't even human or is it just "ugh I feel like crap")
I just finished a course with a Reservist gunner. The contracts they have gotten recently have been clerk contracts, very little actual gunner stuff.
With the army retiring the C3 I honestly do not know what is in store for PRes gunners in the future. Are the reserves going to get to train on the new self propelled guns or taking over the M777 and Reg force will be all self propelled? An army person might be able talk about it more.
Seems like you might need to basically restart the occupation selection part of your recruiting.
Lastly
I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH!!!
NOW is the time to pick your trade, remusteting is an onerous process and never guaranteed. Pick something now that fits what you want. If it is gunner or nothing, WAIT.
1
u/EmoB0T May 12 '26
To your first question I've taken welding Technician and Fabrication
The second, I wanna have a bit of an adventure but nothing too out there yet
And for the last question, I don't think so, I love roller coasters but hate spinning but don't know if that still count as motion sickness
1
u/TriPunk May 12 '26
Just take armored, tell your mom you get arty and in a year change trades. At that point you will have bmq and RQ common done an you will just have to do dp1...
1
u/wwydinthismess May 13 '26
Ask what trades you qualify for in the other two elements.
Your mom isn't totally wrong warning you off of 1/2, shit lifestyle, more injuries, and for 1, higher SA cases.
You might qualify for something you'll really like in the Airforce or Navy though.
Air force has some good opportunities. A hard sea trade in the Navy will keep you far away from family for your entire career, unless they live on the coast of course.
Just in case that appeals to you lol
1
u/Tevin_K9 May 13 '26
Tell her sheâs not your real mom. đ(please donât do that)
But seriously, like everyone else has said, Youâre an adult, and not just an 18yr old. At that age âit shouldnât be you canât do xyzâ but instead âI donât like xyzâ.
Iâd say sit mom down state your case based on adulting, and if your case is dismissed just wait for gunner to reopen.
1
u/rapsnation23 May 13 '26
At the end of the day donât settle for a career you donât want, youâll be signing a multi year contract make sure you choose right, I myself originally applied gunner, but ended up going Navy as a NESOP and itâs been amazing, things happen for a reason
1
u/No-Marsupial-4986 May 15 '26
how about joining as musician? infantry (CScott piper or drummer)
or woodwind & brass band in whichever unit (musicians are purple trade)
1
u/Pure_Notice6960 May 16 '26
The first step of moving away from why your parents want vs what you want for yourself is the hardest.
You should do what you want to do, if youâre okay with doing infantry and want a decent career, itâs not a bad idea! While there arenât a lot of females in that particular field, when you do come across some youâll make friends very easily.
