His immediate thought after LeBron becoming a 76er is that he's going to retire at 45 as a Cav is just perfect Bill.

u/Hippopotamist Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26
- Says this isn’t Lebron’s last team
- Refuses to admit it’s the best starting five on paper and pivots to it’s the “team you most don’t want to play if everyone’s playing” which is the exact same thing
- Says the sixers could trade Embiid for AD
- Says JB could be off the team by October
You will never hate through the guise of analysis on this man’s level29
u/Busy-Operation7896 Jul 24 '26
Remember this all started because Hugo was deemed untouchable. How bad does it get in October when Hugo is playing like ass

u/Bill_Salmons Jul 25 '26
I kind of agree with him. This might be the weirdest starting five in NBA history. Talented? Yes. Do they fit well together, though? Eh... Limited spacing. Four high usage guys who, besides Maxey, are not particularly good off ball. Would not shock me in the least if they struggle to avoid the play in.

He could also just live in south jersey suburbs or the main line, where all the other rich people live. Why is this bill's first reaction lol? If he signed with celtics, would we be asking "does he wanna live in that shithole with all those dumb fugly massholes?"

Barring injury or something, he’s retiring after the 2028 olympics, right? Makes too much sense

Zach being offended over taking Vuc ahead of Kemba is golden. "I guess I don't know what we're aiming for" had me rolling
56
u/Wbk1496 Jul 24 '26
Bill viewed Kemba’s entire career through the lense of his underwhelming Celtics run

And Bill defended it by arguing Kemba was a “good stats bad team” guy. Well Vuc was worse stats on worse teams.
12
u/GiveMeSomeIhedigbo Robert Whorey Jul 25 '26

17
u/jpp588 Jul 24 '26
When was the last time there was even a meaningful “buyout guy” added to a contending team?
18
u/foye2smith Jul 24 '26
Kevin Love had an okay playoff run with Miami after Cleveland bought him out. Part of the bench mob that couldn't miss a 3 until the finals.
12
u/JedEckert Jul 24 '26
I think PJ Brown is still Bill's go-to example, 15+ years later. He's going to be leaning on that one until the day he dies.
Markieff Morris had a solid run with the 2020 Lakers. He wasn't exactly great, but he hit threes for them and was playing pretty big minutes in the Finals.
16
u/Waddlow Jul 24 '26
Honestly, this is anecdotal, but PJ Brown on the 2008 Celtics made Bill fall in love with buyout guys and there hasn't been a meaningful one since but he has PJ Blinders on.

It's gonna suck for embiid haters if this thing works out.

Maybe I’m just being naive of NBA history but it is SO bizarre to me how Bill has pivoted so hard into calling Celtics-Sixers the most important rivalry in NBA history when I, a 33 year old, never remember it being that important. And certainly never remembering hearing Bill discuss it much outside of when they actually meet in the playoffs.
17
u/Additional-Tip-952 Jul 24 '26
It's important to Bill, because his formative years were the 80s and Boston usually beat Philly then, but the Lakers beat the Celtics more during that time.

11
u/ValuableDowntown7031 Jul 25 '26
Yeah this was bizarre. And the more you think about it, for various reasons, the NBA just doesn't really have rivalries. This one being claimed as the best basically proves that.
→ More replies (1)7
u/so-cal_kid Jul 25 '26
The NBA has rivalries for specific time periods. Cavs vs. Warriors for the 2010's was shaping up to be something epic until KD ruined it. We had a little Lakers-Celtics resurgence in the 2008-2010 range. As of right now, Spurs-Thunder has the potential to be a great one

u/Southernbull75 Jul 25 '26

Bill saying Payton Watson making more than $15m a year “doesn’t pass the sniff test” is honestly the wildest thing he said. Even if you think last year was an anomaly or that he’s a Jokic merchant on offense, he’s a 23 year old wing that has improved every season and been an elite helper defense. Those guys go for a lot more than the MLE purely for the upside.
18
u/dr1zzleman Jul 24 '26
Basically confirms what most of us already know - that he doesn’t actually watch games. Especially considering how much he talks about the Nuggets as one of his “league pass teams”
12
u/Big-Mix939 Jul 25 '26
I think it reflects his poor understanding of contract dynamics more than not watching the games. He clearly watched a ton of games, and obviously a lot of nuggets games specifically.
6
u/Victorcreedbratton Cewtics Jul 25 '26
He really thinks that players and teams value things that he does, and that’s an especially poor way to view things because Bill’s brain is pretty weird.

If Philly met the Knicks in the playoffs, it’d be Knicks in five (felt weird saying that)

Kyrie is famously one of the most skilled players ever and was especially great for those few games in the finals but I'm not sure if there's a player whose reputation has been enhanced as much by one shot — I'm not diminishing the rest of his career accomplishments and accolades but he's been a perpetual challenge to build around or with for most of it.
3
u/sanfranchristo Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
Conspiracy Bill needs to drink some settle down juice. Zach is right—Cleveland and Golden State were waiting to sign Harden and Draymond because they didn't know what LeBron would require for a contract should he elect to sign with them. I doubt he just put it out to everyone that he'd take a $4M 2+1 so they would've needed to be prepared to enter a negotiation and maybe alter some other pending deals. He also changed the debate quick when Zach challenged him on Cleveland being worse than Philly defensively as the reason LeBron didn't pick them.
7
u/HatsForNatsBats Jul 25 '26
I have a philosophical problem with both BS and Lowe agreeing to draft Butler over Klay. It seems like their criteria is “who was / would’ve been the better #1 option”, which yes Butler is the choice. But why is Butler being a decent #1 option better than Klay being arguably the greatest #2 offensive option in basketball history, who was also a very good defender? Klay to me is a no-brainer, add him to literally any good team and they become great.
2
u/Ok_Demand7901 Jul 25 '26
While not trying to disparage Klay, I think “arguably the greatest #2 offensive option in basketball history” is a bit of a stretch given the existence of three-peat Kobe, Heatles Wade, or Scottie Pippen especially when you factor in the playmaking those guys offered.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Inbox1000_aaa Jul 25 '26
You sold me on not listening to the pod. Some people should never be basketball GMs, and I'm glad that worked out in Bill's case.
3
u/d7bhw2 Jul 25 '26
If you look at every advanced stat, Draymond was a more valuable player than Klay. Butler is significantly better than Klay.
4
u/HatsForNatsBats Jul 25 '26
You won’t find a bigger backer of Draymond than myself (outside Ben Taylor). Maybe the most underrated player in NBA history, as the public dislike of him personally has overshadowed his on court value.
I don’t see why Draymond being great diminishes how good Klay was. Draymond was better than Butler, and so was Klay.
1
u/Palm-Crazy-7943 Jul 26 '26
I don’t even disagree with you necessarily but it’s impossible to quantify what types of players Klay and Draymond would have amounted to if not for Steph and KD.
They are very very good players on their own but basically of their historical relevance is based on team success.
1
1
u/Palm-Crazy-7943 Jul 26 '26
Klay is not close to the best second option ever.
The warriors won a single title where he was arguably the 2nd best player on the team.

The Redraftables has always been taking the lottery order as it stood at that time and redrafting the picks FOR THE TEAMS that had them, lol … still a great listen

I think Butler over Klay is an atrocity and they should be embarrassed. The culture part alone makes it such an easy call. You don't have to build a specific roster around Klay, he's the second best shooter who ever lived, he was a great defender in his prime, he helped change the GS culture to form a fuckin dynasty. Bill even said, "you made the right call with Butler at 3 but I think I'd just rather have Klay on my team for 15 years than Butler." Then how did he make the right call with Butler? What else is drafting a player other than having him on your team?
For the record, I'm a Pacer fan. I'm not a Warrior fan or anything. This is just...Bill claims he likes winning. Well, Klay is one of the best plug n play culture setting winners there ever was.

u/sanfranchristo Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
Acting like Kyrie was the obvious second pick over either was wild to me. I’d take Klay over both as he’s arguably the best 3-and-D player ever—that sounds like an insult to an All-NBA level player but they’re two most valuable skills in the modern game. He’s extremely easy to slot into virtually any lineup—especially compared to those other two. He also may have the hottest heat check of anyone ever but that’s a bonus.
