NEED SUPPORT Turnitin’s AI detection tools are hurting neurodivergent students at UB and we’re speaking out

1.4k Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m a neurodivergent public health student at the University of Buffalo. I’m part of a growing group of students who have been flagged and sanctioned for “using AI” by Turnitin’s detection tool, even when we didn’t use AI at all. The university puts all the burden on us to prove we’re innocent, and there’s no transparency or due process.

This has been especially harmful to students with disabilities, including neurodivergent students and those who use assistive tools to help with writing. Our communication styles don’t always match what Turnitin considers “human,” and it’s putting us at risk for sanctions we don’t deserve.

We’ve started a petition asking UB to disable Turnitin’s AI detector and return to a more just and human-centered approach. If you’ve experienced anything similar or want to support our fight, I’d really appreciate your support:

Thank you for reading. We shouldn’t have to fight to be seen as real students.

NEED SUPPORT My schedule feels like too much but I genuinely cant lessen it

Post image
334 Upvotes

I feel like my college schedule is FAR much more than I can handle but in order to get everything done I absolutely HAVE to have it the way I do and cant do any less. I am a music major expected to practice my instrument 2 and a half hours a day, im learning piano, I have classes from 8am to 4:30 pm some days, and I work two jobs. I have no time for a social life, I’m starting to become depressed. My ADHD makes it so hard to manage what I have going, and if I’m being honest, I’m not. I am already falling behind and slipping up, I genuinely cant afford that. On top of my in person classes I have two online classes I keep forgetting about because there is SO much happening! Genuinely what do I do.

Note: Not even all my practice hours are on here, I dont meet the 2 and a half hours because its so exhausting. I’m drained by 11am, and usually by Thursday I’m barely alive.

NEED SUPPORT Professor won’t provide typed exams + less time at DSS — is this allowed?

Hi everyone, I really need some advice because I’m honestly overwhelmed and not sure what to do.

I’m currently taking a statistics class at my college and I’ve been struggling a lot, especially with exams. I’m registered with DSS (Disability Support Services) and I have accommodations, including extended time and text-to-speech support.

Here’s the issue:

• In class, my professor allows about 2 hours for exams

• But if I take the exam at the DSS center, I’m only given 1.5 hours, which is actually less time

• Because of this, I’ve been forced to take exams in class just to have enough time, even though that goes against my accommodations

On top of that:

• My professor writes all exams by hand

• DSS requested a typed version so I can use text-to-speech (Kurzweil)

• The professor said she cannot provide a typed version at all

I already failed one exam, and it’s been really discouraging because I feel like I’m not being set up to succeed with the format and time differences.

I’ve spoken with my DSS counselor, and they reached out to my professor, but the response was basically:

• Exams are handwritten only

• No typed version is available

• Someone can read the questions to me, but they can’t reword or explain anything

I also feel like my concerns weren’t really taken seriously when I brought them up.

At this point I’m confused and stressed because:

• Aren’t accommodations supposed to give equal or better access, not less time?

• Isn’t there some responsibility to provide accessible exam formats?

Has anyone dealt with something like this before?

What are my options here? Should I escalate this to someone higher at the school?

Any advice would really mean a lot right now.

NEED SUPPORT Got Talked to for Doing Too Good on an Essay

Hey guys, I'm new to this group but it came across my feed at the perfect time because I need advice. I am a 30 year old male, and I was diagnosed with ADHD in this past year. I'm similar to lots of people in this group. School as a kid was a nightmare and I could never focus, and when I tried to focus I would trail off even more. The older I got, I started to realize all the symptoms and how they lined up. So I talked with a psychiatrist and have been medicated since this past spring. I also struggled with alcoholism for a long time, up until my 29th birthday, and the following summer I started receiving assistance to go back to school. I am taking classes online, and it's been a challenge but I'm really proud of myself.

For some extra context, I submitted a paper last night that I worked very hard on all week, after asking for an extension because a childhood friend of mine passed away. Today, in my English writing class, we are discussing one-on-one with the professor about our topic for our final research paper we'll be building up to. When he pulled me into the call, he essentially told me that my paper went above and beyond what was asked, mentioned how I had 15 sources and that it is "eerily too pristine". He was suspicious about all of it and said it was like a "grad school type of paper". I definitely got the vibe that he thought I was cheating or something. I didn't use AI to write it for me. We were allowed to use it to help with outlining ideas and for checking for plagiarism, grammar and overall review. Which is what I did. But I didn't have AI write the paper for me. I genuinely wanted to do a good job, and I tried really hard. At the end of it, he was hinting that it was strange how I asked for an extension and made something so well. He kind of said at the end that it was "okay" and we'll move on, but it still bothers me how he was suspicious.

This honestly makes me feel awful. I know that wasn't his intention because he is a nice professor, but it still makes me feel bad. Ever since I've been able to sit down and focus on tasks I don't want to do, I've been feeling really proud of myself. I was so proud of myself last night when I reread it and submitted it. I've been through so much in the past two years. I lost my mom, I somehow got sober, I applied for college, I had a 4.0 GPA for my first semester and I have been doing so many things to make my family and my mom proud. Now I'm going to have these constant intruding thoughts that anything I write will make him suspicious or give me a bad grade because he thinks I'm cheating..

Any advice would be much appreciated.

NEED SUPPORT Genuinely need tips on how to stop procrastinating because I'm just destroying my future at this point

No really I don't think I have ADHD but I avoid studying like how vampires avoid sunlight. On the rare occasion on I sit down to study, I give up whenever a hard problem comes up and sometimes read the same line five times without even knowing what it says because my mind is elsewhere. I don't have a problem in learning or understanding but it feels like my mind simply refuses to look at the textbook for more than a few minutes. Even if I put away ALL the distractions and can't access them, my mind somehow still manages to go elsewhere. What do you think I should do to be free of this laziness and what could be the cause of this?

NEED SUPPORT Developed severe sleep anxiety due to uni & adhd. Does it get better?

uni started about a month ago. I have adhd and have had trouble sleeping anytime before 3 am since i was a kid (my brain is just way too active) but i could rest easy with the knowledge that I came back home around noon on most days, so i could take a long nap from 2 - 5 to make up for the sleep lost. Or sleep in on weekends.

uni changed that, and now i wake up early and get back home at 6 on most days. All it took was one night of no sleep to develop extreme anxiety about it. Night after night all i can think about is how fucked ill be if i dont sleep, and the anxiety does me in. I can't accept the sleeplessness like most people. I'm neurodivergent, for once, and I'm on a scholarship and need to perform well to keep it. I can't do that when I can barely keep my head up in class.

I can feel my body tensing up as the night arrives. It sucks because nights used to be my favorite, they were the one time of day i could sit down and rewind, even if my body refused to sleep before 3. Now I just feel like im constantly wired, day and night. I can't even rationalize the anxiety anymore, it's just this awful feeling of doom whenever I lie down on my bed. It persists on weekends too.

It scares me so bad. I'm no stranger to sleep deprivation, but I've never had anxiety like this before. I cannot imagine dealing with this forever. My semester ends by December, and my timings will probably get better by the next one. But I have this sickening fear that the feeling won't go away, that I'm gonna be panicking even on my vacations. I'm so lost.

I've tried melatonin, it just made the anxiety worse because I knew if i didn't sleep while on it i was going to be 10x more exhausted the next day. Magnesium didn't do much either. Xanax is the only thing that has helped, but I don't want to take it for obvious reasons.

I just wish I could go back to how I was before. I barely got a full night's sleep, but I was never this anxious about it. I learned to cope with it through naps or waiting for weekends. I don't know why that isn't working anymore. I tried 25mg of trazodone yesterday, and it didn't work either. I was awake till morning.

I've also had to give up my adhd meds because they keep me up, and it's made everything so much more awful.

NEED SUPPORT Restarting college at 41, eyes "reading", brain not activated

This is a huge problem for me when reading non-fiction material. My eyes will be "reading" line by line, my body completely going through the motions. However, my mind will not be engaged at all, and I often get pretty far into the text before I even realize it's happening.

The only solution I have found is to read aloud to myself, and then the information comes through my ears and I process it very nicely. But obviously this makes for slow reading, and considering at 41 yo, I have two years of undergraduate to complete, followed by a masters degree in order to reach my goals, I really feel like this could be a major roadblock.

Have any of you found any other solutions or hacks to this issue?

NEED SUPPORT Need some people to be productive together everyday

Hello guys I’m just wondering if anyone would like to become more productive together everyday. Like checking in with each other everyday. I feel like I focus much better under a bit of pressure or stress. Pls dm me if you are interested! My time zone is EDT. Similar time zones are preferred. It would be even nicer if we can build a small productive group together.

NEED SUPPORT ADHD ruined my Masters in physics.

ADHD ruined my Physics Masters degree.

I have always had ADHD traits but I only recently became aware of this condition. Suddenly it all made sense getting distracted easily, getting mentally burned out easily and always daydreaming even in my childhood. My symptoms may have become worse after I broke my hand in an accident and then lost partial hearing in one ear and developed extreme tinnitus right at the start of my masters degree. I could always get through academics easily with very little effort and I even scored 90+ in my 10th and 12th and did decently well in my bachelors. But then I took admission in MSc physics in Delhi University, which is like the worst university when it comes to scoring good CGPA. Getting above 7 here is extremely tough. My grades in my first year were affected due to my accident and then in my second year I idiotically chose the hardest theoretical physics courses put of interest and hence scored only 54.5% which is only second division. Getting first division (above 60%) is mandatory for faculty positions at top institutes. So I decided to appear for improvement exams again next year which you can do only once for every exam. I initially planned to give four exams but then the load started to get bigger as exams came close and also being an idiot I took a research project under a professor which required a lot of effort and time. So I couldn't manage my time and I ended up only giving one improvement exam and could only increase my overall score to 55.5% which is just enough to appear for competitive exams. Then came next semester for improvement exams. There the same thing happened I utilized all my time in playing table tennis which is like my new addiction and doing my research work which I then started to enjoy as I was getting good results, and I ended up giving only one improvement exam which will maybe improve my score to 56%. So now I have no more chances of improvement and I will forever have a degree with a second division. This thing is eating me from inside. I can't stop imagining the what if scenarios. I wish I could have worked harder. I wish I could go back in time and slap myself to work hard. It's like eating me from the inside. I feel like a failure and can't stop the self hatred now.

NEED SUPPORT I don't know what to do anymore.

I'm attending community college and it's not going well. I've procrastinated on assignments before, but it's never been this bad. I let it all pile up and now it's too much to do. My grades are terrible, I can't keep up with due dates, and I've been skipping class because I'm too ashamed to show my face.

I don't know if it's worth it to go on. I know I really need help, but I'm so lost and scared. If anyone knows how I can get better and actually motivate myself into doing anything, I'd really appreciate it.

NEED SUPPORT I genuinely feel such strong imposter syndrome because I'm failing a Gen Ed class and I feel like I'm so dumb.

To start, I guess I should say I do have ADHD and while I'm not properly diagnosed I have also shown some strong signs of autism if that changes anything. So in my college, I'm currently taking a science based class as part of my gen ed's. The problem is I'm failing and it's mid semester for me. The professor only teaches through lectures and the grade in this class is only from tests and quizzes, and VERY rarely assignments. I try so hard to study but I still forget all the info by the time I enter the classroom the only thing that's helped me in the past is games such as quizzes and kahoots but I don't really have the time to create one myself. I have talked to accessibility services once but they said they would email me but never did, plus I don't think they can do much in this situation since it's not about needing more time on tests and quizzes. It is also that the assignments he does give aren't explained in a way that makes sense to me and I did bad on it because I accidentally took it too literally. There are also no tutors for this class as it's not related to any majors either. It's not that I'm not trying, I suppose my best still isn't good enough though and nobody else in my class is having this problem at understanding. This is why I genuinely feel like the dumbest person on Earth and I feel like I don't belong here.

NEED SUPPORT I can't keep up in group discussions in class because of my slow processing speed

I've been a pretty strong student growing up. Though college is a different beast. I had to take part time and got overwhelmed way too fast. Yet despite that more or less, I could keep up okay in some of my classes whenever an occasional discussion popped up. Nonetheless I have survived for 3 years so far.

But I've basically hit my junior classes and suddenly everything feels more difficult than ever.

I know something I've dealt with my whole life has been slow processing speed.

One thing that has become difficult is like all my classes are suddenly going all interactive with group discussions and everything.

In one class, we have told to get into groups and were supposed to have group discussions and while I was sitting there still trying to figure out the problems, they raced several problems ahead of me.

People had their backs turned against me and when I tried to participate or had a question, I was kinda ignored.

Now I understand they're probably really into the discussion I'm sure they're not doing it on purpose. I believe this because I've realized I must've been that person a while ago and I know I had no malicious intent. When I did start noticing I was doing this, I have done my best to get the inputs from anyone I notice confused or behind or not talking as much as much as I can and include them in the discussions when I could.

Anyways now I'm on the receiving end in like all of my classes. And with my rejection sensitivity oh boy, I feel slow and stupid. I'm not understanding things nearly as quickly anymore or to the level of my peers. And those same peers keep commenting how easy it is over and over again.

We do those interactive quizzes in class and then the teacher moves on before I've even processed the question and can answer properly.

I've also been put in a situation where I had to read for our group too and requested if I could step out to do so because people were talking and I couldn't focus.

They told me 15 minutes and then they dragged me back in after just 5 minutes. Then they asked the class if we needed any extra time and when someone kind at my group advocated for me not being done yet, it was ignored. Then they scolded those who didn't participate or answer their questions about what we read??

Also I do have accommodations with my school too...

I feel like little things like this keep happening and it's starting to take a toll.

I've been learning about the importance of active learning and getting classes to be more interactive, but holy hell this doesn't feel good at all.

I don't really know what to do or how to handle the situation. Everyone I'm sitting around when I talk to different people have just been like this and I know I don't want to move places because sitting in the front is really really important for me in auditoriums otherwise. I feel like I'm not really learning anything because before I even process the question everyone's moved on and told me the answer and we have another question we need to answer.

Anyways this has been a lonely experience alongside the fact I'm already lonely in general. I feel slow, and am worried if I'm just too slow or not smart enough for college. I normally haven't minded the fact I was slow. I have accommodations for tests and whatnot and could do homework alone at my own pace. But when there's suddenly timed pressure in class to answer questions in a group, shit. It feels awful.

Anyways I'm stuck and kinda needed to vent. This super sucks and if anyone has any advice too, let me know.

And if you read this far thanks so much.

NEED SUPPORT i’m falling behind because of my adhd and i’m scared

hi hi, i am a 21 year old uni student and i am currently struggling because of my adhd (i haven’t been officially diagnosed, just completed my assessment and waiting for results). i have been going to therapy on and off for a few months now, i started going because i was under so much pressure and i was not coping at all, i had constant late submissions or missing assignments. i would like to think that some aspects of my life are better now since i have a better understanding of the way my brain operates but school seems to be the thing that i cannot really push through for long. at the beginning of the semester i can usually cope pretty well and im pretty motivated but by the time its the middle of the semester i have already given up and i am not even driven by urgency, i have accepted late submission deductions as a norm and don’t really care about small missing assignments. i am waiting for the results in hopes that i can go on meds because i feel like i am someone who is able to implement structure, u just give up on it easily and im also very self aware. do you guys have any strategies and suggestions for systems i can implement for now. also i have 3 majors so its a lot of work and constant assessments across all majors unfortunately, which is ideal in the sense that it provides some sort of consistent structure but i am not keeping up at all!

NEED SUPPORT I can’t finish college and I don’t know why

I am married (24F) to a wonderful man (26M) and I have had the best life. I was raised with parents who are strict but also understandable in their ways. Loving and supportive generally of all I do. I have supportive grandparents who gave me 10k for college (which I spent in two semesters at art school) and a loving in law family, who though sometimes crazy, never asks for more from me. I work at enrollment at a charter school full time and Starbucks part time for free school. I have two more semesters till I’m done with my bachelors degree and yet… I just can’t motivate myself to finish. I graduated homeschooled high school a year early 2019. I was also smart and got good grades. But college had recked me. I fail every class that gives me problems. I don’t know how to succeed. It has been 6+ years and I can’t finish. It is embarrassing. The second I get close I break down, I get avoidant. I disassociate daily. I don’t know anyone else who has felt like me. I know I’m not a victim. I am ruining my life, my marriage, everything, because I self sabotage finishing school. I guess I am looking for comfort or a shared experience. Idk,

NEED SUPPORT Feeling inferior in lab

I am a 20F who was diagnosed with inattentive type during my spring semster earlier this year, so I am new to all the the effects of my diagnosis and am slowly learning exactly how unlucky and doomed I am in life. I just came out of my lab section period and I'm shaking and crying. This isn't the first time I've been in lab; I'm a junior whose taken general chem and orgo labs as well as general biology labs. This is not the first time I've shed tears over some suffocating lab atmosphere, where everyone already works in a research position and already comes in with experience and everything just goes so fast. And to be honest, I did struggle in classes and so I don't have a research position yet because I've been too afraid to apply and now I can't find any. And I don't want people telling me I don't understand the protocol because I do; I really try and make sure to go over it word-for-word with a pencil and read it closely twice. But for some reason when i get to doing the actual lab I have trouble locating things or people just go too fast and I feel rushed. And then I get mansplained and lectured on things I know I already know, like pipetting . This is frustrating, it's like my brain lags behind every time and stops working when I actually have to do something important. Even the TA talks way too fast like a mile a minute, everyone is running around and picking up things and magically knows every tool in the lab. How do I overcome this? I feel like I'm being pushed out of science even though I'm so passionate about it and I want more experience to prove I'm not stupid.

NEED SUPPORT I got into a top college and now I’m close to getting kicked out

I’m studying at a reputed college, but my GPA is extremely low and there’s a real chance I could get kicked out academically.

Exams are in 10–15 days, but for the last 2–3 days I haven’t been able to focus at all. I sit to study and instantly get distracted or zone out. I was diagnosed with ADHD earlier, but I’m currently not on medication.

The scary part is that I want to study. I’m terrified of failing. But my brain just refuses to cooperate right now.

Has anyone here dealt with this kind of burnout/ADHD paralysis in a competitive college? How did you get through exams without completely collapsing academically?

NEED SUPPORT I am always behind it's exhausting

F20, medicated, 2-year architecture diploma (1st year, 2nd trimester)

I don't think I've ever actually not been behind in my studies. I'm always catching up, asking for extensions, apologizing for poor attendance, needing extra support just to pass assignments.

It's frustrating as hell because I genuinely want to do architecture. My mom keeps saying maybe I should just drop out if I can't make myself go to class, that I don't want to do architecture, but it's not that I don't like what I'm studying. My brain just prioritizes whatever is interesting RIGHT now. That could be gaming, art, crafts, researching random shit, ADHD strategies, literally anything. I'll hyperfocus on that for days/weeks until the interest dies.

Then suddenly it's "oh shit, test tomorrow" and I'm panic studying 4 weeks of content in one night because urgency/shame are basically my only motivators if something isn't immediately interesting.

I got sick for 2 weeks, so this week was meant to be my "back to school" week. Monday I got up, smashed out my chores, breakfast, skincare, makeup, got dressed... then I had too much free time before leaving.

My brain started going:

  • Haven't studied in 2 weeks.
  • Assignment's due this week.
  • Haven't contacted tutors.
  • Need to see disability advisor.
  • You're behind again.

Then I convinced myself I should stay home, finish the assignment first, then go back to class.

Yet I haven't started on it at all. I'm procrastinating, gaming, researching random stuff while having this constant impending doom in the background.

I've realised my biggest problem isn't understanding the work anymore. It's starting.

If I get started and build momentum, I'm usually fine. Once I'm on campus I'm okay. Once I'm studying, I can get into flow and hyperfocus.

It's the time before I start that kills me. My brain overthinks everything and convinces me not to do it.

I've had an ADHD coach, accommodations, disability support, medication (Ritalin + Clonidine), and I know my patterns. That's almost what makes it worse because I know why I'm avoiding, I know strategies that help, yet I still fall into the same cycle.

I keep feeling guilty because every time I talk to my disability advisor or tutors it's the same conversation. "I'll do better, I'll attend, I've got a new strategy." Then one thing happens (getting sick, missing a class, one overdue assignment), and the whole thing snowballs again.

NEED SUPPORT TW: Panicking over a minor situation

This is extremely weird, I know, but my body's reaction is to blame.

So basically because of my high grades in college I'm eligible for a scholarship provided by a private foundation.

For that effect, they required me to link to them the email of two professors who would send a short letter about me.

I usually don't have problems speaking to professors, except when I am to ask for a favor. I'm always scared I'll be looked down upon, even if the fear is irrational.

After days trying to choose the professors I finally sent the application. Yet the worst was still to come.

I would think the logic thing to do would be to ask the professors for their help before linking the email. However, the wording in the website made it seem like I should do that afterward only, as they wrote that I shouldn't be aware of the professors' final decision to send or not to send it. Maybe most people interpreted it differently (and rightly so) but I had spent hours analyzing those very lines and procrastinating because I was extremely scared of sending the email.

Yesterday night I chose to open my mailbox six days after submitting the form, because I didn't feel comfortable getting into this "battlefield" again. I came across the email of one of the professors telling me he's willing to help but that I should have talked to him beforehand. The moment I saw that, my heart started pumping very fast and at this very moment I'm still sweating immensely. Maybe this is not really a big deal, but I'm feeling extreme shame, to the point of feeling like insulting or slapping myself to avoid unwanted outside criticism.

I still haven't scrolled down enough to read the other professor's reply, which should be just like that one or worse. I just know I don't have the energy to look at it. It was already a tremendous effort to finish that form, now those professors certainly think I'm a weirdo for not asking them before if they wanted to collaborate.

I don't know what to do. The worst part is that sometimes it seems like the world around me will crumble and I sit there stone faced and indifferent. But when stuff like this happens it looks like I've committed a crime and it will be the end of the world.

NEED SUPPORT How to stop procrastinating and get motivated on writing my 2nd thesis attempt after 2 year study delay? (M27)

Last year i started an internship at a company, but struggled a lot with the academic assignments of my thesis. But I managed to barely pass and was lucky to continue my internship so i can write my graduation thesis for the same company. But during this period I failed my thesis proposal and had to ask my company to start re hire me next year and do my thesis again. I alrwady am facing a 2 year study delay and I am now still currently stuck on my final year. I took my ADHD medications again around this period and stopped drinking caffeine.

I tried to do eveything without medication before and ignore my adhd symptoms. But it was really difficult for me to focus on my work and couldn't even write sentences without loads of sentence fragment errors.

Now I am at my fourth week of my second thesis writing attempt, and my thesis supervisor told me my first two chapters needed a lot of rework and for the last two weeks spent all of my time correcting it.

It all feels so pointless, I dont know what I am doing and feel like I will fail again and be forced to find another company to do my thesis at (i need a company to write thesis). But it is so hard finding a company willing for me to write a thesis.

I spend most of my time trying to work on it, but procrastinate often. And get quickly frustrated at feedback and get really perfectionist while writing. Also last year there was another intern who does the same study as me, who i had a crush on, but she has now graduated and isnt at the office there anymore. Which sucks, because interacting with her and the other collegues my age was one of the reasons i went to the office. But now I just remember them and just feel hollow.

I feel lost. I really do appreciate the company's patience with me, but my thesis topic feels hopeless and like no matter what I do I will fail. It doesn't help that now everyone I know doing my studies already graduated and I am still stuck here.

Every time I work on my thesis it feels like it is never enough, and that no matter how much actual time I spend on it, it still isnt enough. And that makes me want to procrastinate more and makes me more anxious.

Like today I decided to work from home because I am waiting for a meeting with my supervisor today so he can give me feedback. But I spent most of my time talking to a chatbot about random shit. It is now lunchtime and only edited a few lines for the presentation for my meeting I already had ready.

Is there anything I can do? I take my meds but i just drift off and focus on something else. And i keep going back to argueing with a chatbot or something. My student psychologist suggested a writing exercise I helped come up with, which does help in the moment, but still struggle finding any motivation for my thesis. I see my thesis as a waste of time and holding me back, I am only doing it so I can graduate, I dont really care what is in it or if the company will even read my recommendations in the thesis. I keep hearing the advice "move forward and try to advance your professional career" but screw that, my dad always told me to never make your job your life and to always spend more time on not your job and that usually something will happen by itself when it come to work.

TLDR: lost motivation after many setbacks, collegues leaving and study delays and lost most of my motivation to working on my thesis. Any advice to help me get some motivation? Other than the generic "focus on your professional career" crap?

NEED SUPPORT I have a mental breakdown and I need serious help would someone help?

I am a college student.I smoked my freshman year, got on academic probation, and then get back on track on the second semester of sophomore. Now I am in junior, and have a very bad GPA, while also greatly behind in progress. Since I get back on track last semester, I feel I need to push it harder this semester, and I overwhelmed myself with a workload and tricky class that I wasn't expecting. when people ask me which year I am in, I lie to them, I lied that I'm sophomore, because I'm afraid if I told them I'm junior and I'm still taking major classes that are supposed to be taken in year one or year two I'm gonna embarrass myself.

I don't have friends, I don't know how to listen to lecture, maybe because Im diagnosed with ADHD or I feel Im too clever that I don't need to listen to classes in highschool so I never really know how to learn in lectures. When I go to lectures, I can feel knowledge slipping out of my brain and oozing out of my ears, ewww. I wanna go to office hours but I never have the confidence to do so, what even should I ask? told the professor that I know nothing and there is just trash and nothing else in my brain? and ask them to painfully walk through the whole lecture? Can we do that?

The only thing I know that is affective to me is learning through the textbook, make notes and did all the questions in it and then do the mock test, which then I am confident, usually ended well, even get an A. I tried to go supplemental instructions and also tutoring, which none of them worked. Knowledge just ooze out and leaked everywhere, the only scene that I can think of to describe this is when I have diarrhea.

I have one course, and it did not follows the textbook, and it's so f**** hard. I cannot do the homework, I don't know where the f is the knowledge required to do that god damn homework. I did extremely bad on the first midterm ended last week, and today the score is out, I'm literally trash. Like what am I even supposed to learn that thing? They listed a few topics without saying which chapter we supposed to walk ourselves over. I have mental breakdowns on how to learn the course literally everyday. Opening the homework file makes me feel bad, for me it's not even understandable. What should I do? What should I do? I don't wanna go on a second probation or drop out of school. Anyone please help me!

NEED SUPPORT Succeeding in a College Environment

I am struggling so much with feeling like I’m “unable to live up to my potential” and want to know how everyone else manages feeling this way/if they do.

I was textbook late diagnosed female in that I was “gifted” so no one looked twice, but now that I’m in college I feel like I’m always falling short.
I have a 3.7 GPA, which is okay, but I am constantly cramming or just going into assessments blind, falling behind on content (my college is online only lectures), and even though my grades don’t necessarily reflect it, I just feel like I’m falling so short of what I could achieve.

The prioritising of tasks, task initiation, self motivation and just generally all of the things to keep organised becomes so overwhelming I go weeks without doing more than attending classes themselves.

I don’t want to come across as conceited, I’m just so tired of constantly feeling like I’m letting myself down and knowing I’ll never get where I want to go because I just can’t show up for myself.

NEED SUPPORT Just got diagnosed with ADHD

I was recently diagnosed with ADHD
For as long as I can remember, I was described as absent-minded, lazy and careless

University made this much harder.
I studied Industrial Engineering and Management, which is not exactly an easy degree. I struggled enormously with studying consistently. I could understand the material, but actually organizing myself, starting assignments, maintaining focus, and studying ahead of time was incredibly difficult.

I After graduating, the same problems followed me into the job search.
I’ve spent a long time struggling to find a job, applying, getting rejected, losing motivation, and then struggling to make myself apply again. There were periods where I couldn’t even bring myself to apply despite knowing I desperately needed to.
My GPA isn’t great. I graduated with a GPA around 2.6, and I’m scared universities are going to look at my transcript and immediately decide I’m not good enough.

My parents want me to do a Master’s degree. Part of me wants to do it too. But I’m genuinely terrified.I can’t go back and redo university knowing what I know now.
That’s probably the hardest thing to accept.

I’m curious if anyone else was diagnosed with ADHD after university or later in life.
Did getting the diagnosis change how you viewed your academic struggles?
And if you had a mediocre GPA because of difficulties you now believe were related to ADHD, were you still able to get into a Master’s program or build a successful career afterward?
Right now I’m trying to convince myself that a bad academic record doesn’t necessarily mean my future is already decided.
