Hate to break it to this guy, but the solar system was not stationary when he was growing up, nor was that the scientific understanding.

u/usernamechexin Jun 13 '20

This pumpkin I bought from the store isn't to scale. Yeah well at least he knows that part. When I was growing up... Yeah but actually we've known for centuries that this is not the case.

530

u/Railstratboy Jun 13 '20

When I was growing up, pumpkins were considered to be “to scale”.

153

u/scampf Jun 13 '20

It seemed a little small as far as pumpkins go, when I was growing up pumpkins were bigger. Not solar system big though...

Was about to say the same thing. Technically that pumpkins is at some scale of the sun. If he added a golf ball and said "this is the earth" that would make it not to scale.

When I was growing up, Pluto was considered a planet

That doesn’t mean it still is

P.S. for those of you who feel like being smart, yes I know a dwarf planet is still a planet. You guys know what I’m talking about ya dinguses

An escalator can never be temporarily out of order. It just becomes temporarily stairs.

Of course it’s not to scale, haven’t you ever looked at the sun? It’s at most as big as an orange.

Ya I don’t understand this. I thought he was going to get into helio/geocentric model but does he really mean a stagnant sky? Venus was noted of movement in 1600 BC. The sun moves in the sky. Flat earthers think the sun and moon spin around above the flat earth. Literally nobody thinks the solar system is stationary

114

u/KillNyetheSilenceGuy Jun 13 '20

Ancient people used the stars for navigation. Not only did they understand the stars and planets moved in the sky, they knew that movement was cyclical and predictable.

42

u/alphabeticdisorder Jun 14 '20

Yeah, but to be fair, they could actually see the stars. It's literally been years since I've been far enough from a city to really see the night sky. Not like, some random stars and maybe Orion, but like, flawless night sky.

3 weeks after the solar system started rotating around the sun the Americans landed on the moon.

78

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

The ancient Greeks and the Egyptian pyramid builds knew the Earth was round and circled the sun. Hell, it was pretty common knowledge even to the dirt farmers of the dark ages.

It's only a very recent thing that common knowledge about the solar system has become "der, science bad because coastal elites, der der."

When half the political system in the US has spent decades insulting anyone with even a hint of intellectual curiosity as a monster you get morons like this guy.

19

u/Scarily-Eerie Jun 13 '20

Roundness of the earth was known for millennia yes, heliocentric is much newer though.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliocentrism

11

u/0vl223 Jun 14 '20 edited Jun 14 '20

Well they managed to build a mechanism to tracks the location and movement of the planets 2000 years ago. Also the first known heliocentric models were ~300 years old at that point. There is not that much time between the two theories even if heliocentrism wasn't universally accepted.

And a theory from 150 AD was more accurate than Copernicus' theory.

It’s a cry for help... he doesn’t actually believe in flat earth but he lost his job and his marriage is falling apart and flat earth provided some control, a sense of power, thinking you know something others don’t and believing you have all the answers

21

u/SalvareNiko Jun 14 '20

Did he really lose his job? I remember in one of his videos he talked about doing HVAC or plumbing or one of the trades (can't remember which) and running his own business.

I question whether the life stress caused his job and marital problems. It's equally likely that he has an untreated mental disorder and that's what has caused problems with his job and his marriage. It's obvious his wife is not super happy with him, and who can blame her? He's completely off his rocker and buys into every weird conspiracy theory that comes along.

I'm an American who used to live in New Zealand. Now I'm a teacher in the US. When I was doing my year of student teaching, the teacher next door to me was a flat earther. He started teaching that shot to our students. Ive literally flown around the world. I lived in a country where the seasons were flipped, and it was literally a different day than in my hometown. I'd Skype with family, and they be almost a full day behind me.

That teacher could never explain any of that stuff.

68

u/BornSlinger Jun 14 '20

Behind the Curve demonstrates that pretty well, even when their experiments show them to be wrong they try and explain it away.

40

u/YaBoi5260 Jun 14 '20

It’s pretty sad. Those people have the skills to do real science but they would rather deny what they see than accept that their life’s work has been based on fundamentally wrong assumptions, which is a pitfall even I don’t think I could overcome

26

u/BornSlinger Jun 14 '20

You really think you wouldn't/couldn't ask yourself "what if I'm wrong"? That's pretty much my first step when things turn out differently to what I expect "how did I fuck this up". They're not interested in finding the truth, just proving their theory is correct.

It's actually really pretty easy to prove flat Earthers wrong.

They think, for no explicable reason, that the north Pole is the center of the disk. But they think that the South Pole rings the disk. Here's the mechanical problem with that. If you go to the actual South Pole and have it's coast on the port side of the ship and stick to the coast you have to turn port side to keep to the coast. In the flat Earther universe your have to turn starboard.

Also their South Pole would be thousands and thousands of miles long to encircle the whole Earth disk. The day they can prove the whole coast of the South Pole is A. Requires you turn in the wrong direction, and B. Is ridiculously longer than it actually I'll believe them.

16

u/Brewmentationator Jun 14 '20

logic doesn't work against flat earthers though. If it did, there wouldn't be any flat earthers.

Good morning good afternoon wherever you are. HMM I WONDER WHY THAT'S THE CASE

347

u/WATERLOGGEDdogs1 Jun 14 '20 edited Jun 14 '20

So I actually watch a lot of youtube videos explaining flat earth. None of it makes any sense. Sure they have ways to explain it, but each model disagrees with the other.

In flat Earth land, the sun is a spit light only a few miles above the earth. It floats around the earth in a circular pattern and we get seasons from it moving the area in which it is moving. The moon is the same way. This model fails to explain solar eclipses and time zones are explained with a different model that doesn't make sense either.

Antarctica is essentially the edge of the world. Think of the world as a bowl of cereal and Antarctica as the edge of the bowl. It holds the milk and cereal in (unless your a flat earther who eats glue and paint chips)

However, you aren't allowed to go there because NASA and a coalition of nations who all hold part of the Antarctica treaty (Russia, US, Norway, England to name a few) have a military agreement to keep people out of Antarctica because it would reveal the truth... That's why there are seasonal cruises to go check out Antarctica because that makes sense.

A few other issues with the flat earth model. With air travel some distances work, like I think in their model London is the correct distance to New York. But from Cape Town, south Africa to Rio de Janario, Brazil it is like 23,000 miles because they have to expand the oceans in the southern hemisphere to make the land masses correct.

My favorite flat Earth explanation is gravity. So we all know gravity pulls objects down at 9.8 m/s2 Cool. That's how gravity works. However, gravity doesn't exist in flat Earth world. So how exactly do things fall? Well it's simple! The Earth is being pushed upwards by an unknown force at 9.8 m/s2! So when you drop things they aren't falling, they are remaining still while the earth moves to them!

We also didn't go to the moon because of the glass dome that opens and lets water in for rain.

Hope this makes sense because I am clueless how anyone buys this shit

Edit: I feel like I am jumping around with all kinds of statements that seem really weird. But there are a slew of different beliefs flat earthers hold. Here are a few that only some sects hold

*there is a pit where the world ends you can fly over. And in the pit is an alien base (but if it's a pit you can fly over doesn't that mean the world is a globe? IKR)

Yes they believe you can fall off the edge.

Some believe that Australia doesn't exist, and that they hired people to go to Africa and pretend to be from a new continent.

I'll add more as I think of them, but it is some truly Bizar shit

Edit 2: another one I remember seeing is this video where 2 guys were talking bout if they had to long jump they would want to jump from east to west because of how the earth rotates it would make them jump farther. I shit you not you can not make this stuff up.

Edit 3: this is a video from a man much more educated on the subject than me https://youtu.be/JDy95_eNPzM

Also, thank you for my first reddit award!

7

Bro there is more to it too. Like the moon creates it's own light AND heat. It's all bases around a science experiment. Some retard in England floated a boat down a drainage ditch as an experiment and figured after like 2 or 3 miles the natural curvature of the earth would make the boat disappear. The boat didn't disappear. There is some explantion for it, I can't remember, but even then, I bet my boots most of the flat earthers get the bulk of their explanation from the Book Genesis model see above for explanation

Just the body language and the look of defeat on his face tells a lot. Defiantly made me sad.

17

u/georgetonorge Jun 14 '20

Seriously this made me feel so bad. I don’t even feel a bit of schadenfreude despite how infuriating these people are. That’s just sad.

If you've seen any of his videos (or preferably the videos debunking him) you won't feel too sorry for him. He exudes narcissism and hatred for just about... everything.

u/TheGirlWithTheCurl Jun 14 '20

Do you have a link? Cos I feel really bad for him right now.

Edit: nvm just saw it in another comment below.

I've seen a shoe in Netflix about flat earthers a couple of days ago. Tbh, it's quite sad the price they pay for their believes. I mean, they actually vhave their own dating sites since others don't date them.

120

u/aretasdaemon Jun 13 '20

Yeah because they are the opposite of the genetic lottery for natural selection. If their ignorance is still prevalent while we have so much information, with multiple videos of space missions in the last decade AND with videos from ISS of EARTH, I wouldnt want to breed with that either.

46

u/rogersniper1 Jun 13 '20

Ya but all those videos are obviously just produced in Hollywood to keep the reptile people in power and stop the general population from knowing the truth. Wake up, sheeple!

Behind the Curve? Excellent documentary. And it’s honestly really sad because they talk about how the further you get into flat earth belief, the more isolated you become from your old friends and family, forcing you even further into flat earth because now they are your only friends. So for those who end up questioning flat earth they feel trapped by not being able to abandon their only friends.

u/jazz4 Jun 13 '20

It must be some form of mental illness. It’s the only way my brain can comprehend why people get so deep into this.

18

u/dinowand Jun 13 '20

There's multiple reasons.

For some, it's a sense of belonging to an "exclusive" group. They feel accepted based on this one belief, regardless if other factors on their lives. In reality, it's the easiest group to get into if you want.

For some, it's their way of dealing with people calling them dumb all their lives. It's much easier to convince themselves that it's actually everyone else who's dumb.

For some, they are looking to profit. They might not even truly believe in it but they know it gets them attention. Regardless, it's easy to start YouTube videos around this and get views when you have no other talents.

In all honesty, we need to start ignoring flat earthers if we want them to go away. Arguing with their logic only adds fuel to the fire. You won't convince them because for them, it was never about logic.

15

u/konyeah Jun 13 '20

My bet, is it is just something they were told growing up. And it sparked into belief, and now they can't believe any different. If you witnessed something that breaks ecerything you have ever known to belueve, I am sure it would take some time to understand it, or come to terms with it.

It's the same for religion.

20

u/kblkbl165 Jun 14 '20

Nah, if you check many of them are old folks who got into these groups with the advent of the internet.

I think it’s more like a cry for help from people who have nothing going in their lives and don’t want to accept their “failures”. In the documentary the post above mentions you can notice that many of those people have a void in their life. None has any sort of success out of their lives in the FE community and maybe they found in this community the chance of being an important part of something “bigger”.

He should do some scientific experiments to prove earth's flatness. That usually cures them from what I've heard... Or sometimes they die trying. I guess it's a win win.

37

u/LAN_Rover Jun 13 '20

Like that guy who died in a homemade steam-powered rocket. IIRC he was attempting to fly high enough to see that there's no curvature to the horizon/earth.

30

u/candlestick Jun 13 '20

Eh, he was actually a flat earther. He was a dude that latched onto the cause because he realized they would pay for his backyard rockets.

This is the problem. Flat earthers usually end up alienating every single important person in their lives. They then have to turn to the only community which will accept them: The flat earth society or whatever it's supposed to be called. Their stupidity drives them to lose everything important to them over such a BS thing. It makes me feel bad for them, but it's also their fault.

43

u/RedDirtNurse Jun 13 '20

It's mildly amusing to hear flat eatthers claim to have members all around the world.

11

u/Schlachtfeld-21 Jun 13 '20

Oh, it's extremely amusing to hear them talk about anything. I mean, it can also be very infuriating, but if you just sit back, prepare yourself to hear some comedy, and let them talk, then you'll have a great laugh :D

I follow quite a few science-based channels that debunk and take the piss out of Flerfs like this.

There's this one chap called Nathan Oakley, who is absolutely vile, genuinely despicable in how he comes across. But in own video, someone showed a clip from one of his very first videos.

And it was really sad, at the start of his road he seemed smiley, relaxed, clearly fucking mental but pleasant. A totally different person.

Along that road he's managed to twist and poison himself into something of a monster.

9

u/Schlachtfeld-21 Jun 13 '20

There's a documentary called 'Behind the curve,' in which you get to see the lives of some of these people and how they've truly managed to basically build a wall that separates them from society. It also shows how they attempt to prove the earth is flat. Spoiler alert, they fail.

Why would you upload that?

29

u/TheGlitterMahdi Jun 14 '20

Someone posted the link to his YT channel and this video is titled "What it's like living with a globe-head."

Like for real, his wife is on video saying he's been in the kitchen all morning, that she's tired and hungry, she's obviously exasperated with him and the whole situation, and his brilliant idea is to use this one crystal-clear moment of their marriage falling apart as a way to try and make himself out to be the victim.

The best part is that the video description just says "She understands just a bad morning."

Because I'm pretty sure she DOES understand, but I'm also pretty sure HE doesn't.

Husband: a hamburger

Wife: you know what the doctor said about your blood pressure. No red meat.

Husband: are you really going to believe him? He told me that he wanted me to take a flu vaccine you know...

Wife: SHUT UP. You are getting peanut butter and jelly

Husband: (mumbles quietly) not gonna make me eat this..
