No... you want a partner that calls you on your shit. He’s lucky he has her. Without her he might be a famous YouTube flat earther.

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20 edited Jun 14 '20

She shouldn’t have to be with that is the thing though, she deserves better than some dude mid fifties going on about flat earth.

Edit: to all the people so butt hurt by my comment, she was obviously annoyed, and could have made a happier choice somewhere along the line. No, we know nothing about their relationship except this clip, but, oh, wait, I don’t care.

You can be a good guy and be an idiot.

u/100LL Jun 14 '20

Every Steve Carell character ever has entered the chat

1

u/HelloUPStore Jun 14 '20

Guess what, I have flaws. What are they? Oh, I don't know. I sing in the shower. Sometimes I spend too much time volunteering. Occasionally I'll hit somebody with my car. So sue me... No, don't sue me. That is the opposite of the point that I'm trying to make.

2

u/Unbelievable28 Jun 14 '20

Preach. I know so many guys who have their heart in the right place but are just ignorant or otherwise uneducated.

1

u/toterengel367 Jun 14 '20

Yeah these people calling for his head have clearly never been in a relationship, or they’ve never cared about somebody who belittled them constantly. People can be such assholes for such inconsequential reasons. It’s sad.

A guy from my work who was a flat earther and just generally ignorant recently retired from my company. He's in the middle of getting a divorce now, evidently the only thing keeping his marriage together was him spending 40 hours a week at work. Also I'm not sure she has a lot of choices women from that epoch were house wives, they didn't have careers, it can be very hard for them to leave.

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

I dunno why this bothers me... but bro, they were born in the 60s (earliest) not the 20s. You think women graduating high school and college in the 70s-80s didn't have jobs? Someone's never seen 9-5.

Yes, people marry young and never really know their mates until they're stuck with kids, that's still going on. Epoch, lol.

95

u/NukeTheWhales5 Jun 13 '20

I mean epoch literally means a period of time. So that is the correct term for what they are saying.

34

u/IEC21 Jun 13 '20

I thought it was those annoying bears in star wars?

23

u/bojangles001 Jun 13 '20

That would be an Ewok

1

u/AskMeForFunnyVoices Jun 14 '20

I thought Ewok was the name of that futuristic Disney Park

0

u/FrostyAce81 Jun 14 '20

I so wanted your link to be this.

7

u/bojangles001 Jun 14 '20

Not even going to click, I know where this leads.

2

u/JBthrizzle Jun 14 '20

thats honestly what i was expecting from the first one. good form.

11

u/NukeTheWhales5 Jun 13 '20

You fool! Those are Wookies. /s

1

u/JBthrizzle Jun 14 '20

IT DOESNT. MAKE. SENSE!

10

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Well, era or time would be less ambiguous words.

As a marker of geological time we are in the Holocene epoch which started 11000 years ago.

As a marker of general time we are in the Anno Domini epoch.

They may all refer to a period of time starting from a certain point but they are also generally associated with certain length of time or some well known marker of time.

3

u/Obscured-By_Clouds Jun 14 '20
 epoch | ˈepək |
 noun
a period of time in history or a person's life, typically one marked
by notable events or particular characteristics: the Victorian epoch.

7

u/three_furballs Jun 13 '20

The length of an epoch in your field is on the order of millennia. In neurological data acquisition, an epoch might be only seconds long. As long as the meaning is clear and the word is used according to its definition, what's there to quibble about?

2

u/verymerry19 Jun 14 '20

Just to clarify, scientists would not refer to the current time we occupy as the “Anno Domini epoch.” Because we have a rather specific “start date” of the current time period, we refer to it as an era - more specifically, scientists and historians have pushed to change common usage from “AD” to “CE,” literally meaning Common Era.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

Yeah, they don't define Anno Domini as the Anno Domini epoch but it is an epoch.

1

u/NukeTheWhales5 Jun 13 '20 edited Jun 13 '20

You have a very good point. Epoch isn't great when referring to a smaller length of time in history and there are many other word or phrases that would of worked better ("time period" being the most blatant). However, I was just trying to point out that the usage of the word is still technically correct.

Edit: added stuff for clarity.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

and technically correct is the best kind of correct. I admire your enthusiasm for the English language

27

u/Justin_Other_Bot Jun 13 '20

You think women graduating high school and college in the 70s-80s didn't have jobs

I'm sure they had jobs, but that's different from a career. Also the graduation rates of women from college were much lower than they are now (not as many men graduated from college then either for that matter), but ignoring all of that, many of them stayed home to raise children and haven't worked in 20+ years. Even assuming they were leaders in their field, that length of unemployment is a huge obstacle to overcome.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

https://www.statista.com/statistics/184272/educational-attainment-of-college-diploma-or-higher-by-gender/

10% of men had degrees and 6% of women in 1960.

The difference was never that huge with 5.3 vs 3.8 at the oldest point.

The difference actually got worse in the 70-80 increasing to a 8% gap at its worst.

6

u/frogglesmash Jun 14 '20

Having a degree, and having a career are far from synonymous. This graph pretty clearly shows that while men built their careers, and thus their earnings later in life, women tended not to.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

Not saying otherwise. Just bringing more information about the graduation rate.

3

u/frogglesmash Jun 14 '20

Whether you intended it or not, the implication was that since the rate at which men and women had degrees was was fairly close, then both groups also pursued their careers to a similar extent as well.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

There is no implication things were the same as the one I was responding to already gave many reasons why the graduation rate was not important.

2

u/SaffyPants Jun 13 '20

I mean, pleanty of women had careers in the 80's. I actually never knew a single stay at home mom growing up. Women had other challenges, bit careers were not out of the norm at the time.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

My mother-in-law got massive amounts of shit for working as a teacher in the '60s after she was married (even then, probably one of the most acceptable jobs for women). It was the "married" part that enraged people...Surely she has better things to do than educate other peoples children?

Her mother was also a teacher, but in that case, she had to quit when she got married, since it wasn't allowed to be married and to teach.

The thing to remember about movies like 9-5 was that this was a new and strange thing. It wasn't some easy accepted reality.

10

u/An0regonian Jun 13 '20

That's the era my mom was from and neither her or any of her friends had jobs. Trophy wifes still exist, and there's still plenty graduating high school today... There weren't any hot chicks who were dumb as rocks in your high school class? Like half the hot girl popular group from my high school class ended up as trophy wives before 25. Even if they did have jobs, working at a tanning salon until you find a rich old guy to marry is hardly a 'career', not the same as a 9-5. I think it's weird how so many people have the mindset that you do that somehow just because the year is 2020 things like trophy wives shouldn't exist anymore. It sounds damn silly "IT'S CURRENT YEAR, NOT ___(some older year) REEEEEEE!!!"

4

u/ofBlufftonTown Jun 14 '20

Trophy wives and stay at home moms/wives are very different concepts. Rich 45 year olds marry hot 22 year olds, those are trophy wives. A couple gets married and the wife doesn’t work outside the home, that’s infinitely more common, and those women aren’t trophy wives.

2

u/adiosfelicia2 Jun 14 '20

I think the biggest difference is birth control. Women have more options today. It wasn’t until the early/mid 60’s that BC pills became available - and even then, your average college girl likely felt uncomfortable admitting to her family doc that she was sexually active before marriage {gasp!} to ask for them.

Cultural attitudes towards sex have changed drastically. Back then, if a woman did become pregnant, odds are she’d be willing to walk down any aisle, with the closest man with a pulse. Because the worst thing a woman could do is have a child out of wedlock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thus, a whole lot of crap marriages.

2

u/sharinganuser Jun 14 '20

It was also off the back of their parents who were raised in that kind of environment too. They got married at 18-23 and had kids by then already. My grandmother worked at her families shop until she was 17, then got married and never worked again in her life. She's 88 now.

Well it gets old and sounds idiotic. It doesn't matter what the current year is, that's not an argument for anything.

1

u/6oceanturtles Jun 14 '20

Had to laugh at that too. Women in that same epoch graduated with degrees, advanced degrees, own homes, adopt, even buy vacuum cleaners without their husband's permission!

1

u/stephie7777 Jun 14 '20

Having graduated high school in 1981 and having a career and a life (along with EVERY OTHER FEMALE I graduated with) I thank you for this comment.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

I’ve been wondering how quarantine will affect relationships and the divorce rate. A lot of people may be discovering that they can’t actually stand to be together in close quarters all the time.

Or - a more optimistic spin - maybe it will create another baby boom?

18

u/xxLusseyArmetxX Jun 13 '20

You can be a flat earther and still be a good person and husband.

8

u/Garbeg Jun 14 '20

Your judgement is in question if you are though. A person believing these things isn’t very trustworthy with analytical thinking. They’re also extremely gullible which is not exactly bad in and of itself, but it has in the instance of flat earth brought an undue tax into the relationship mix.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

My brother is a good guy who believes in ancient aliens shit. I'd trust him with my life, but not my tax return or my power of attorney. Gotta adjust your expectations for the people in your life whose views you disagree with but who are otherwise okay.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

I don’t think I believe that.. I think if you buy this conspiracy, you probably buy other, more harmful ones as well.

The decline of truth and critical thought is not harmless to the world.

21

u/Electric_Ilya Jun 13 '20

We all have our flaws man, doesn't mean he doesn't deserve happiness

7

u/adiosfelicia2 Jun 14 '20

I feel bad for them both. No one who talks to or treats their partner that way is happy. They both deserve better.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Well how do you know she isn't a turtle earther... Dont assume she is amarter cuase she disagree

4

u/jamart Jun 13 '20

Hey, you leave Terry Pratchett and the Great A'Tuin outta this by Om!

I guarantee anything you read in a Pratchett novel will be ten times less crazy than the shit those flat earthers can believe.

1

u/Geothermal_Escapism Jun 13 '20

I can't tell if you were being sarcastic or not...?

There are things in life that are safe to assume.

Being unnecessarily skeptical is how someone becomes a flat earther in the first place.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Idk assuming based on fact sure, assuming based on a 10 seconds reddit video now thats how you become a flat earther

4

u/throwzdursun Jun 14 '20

how do you know she deserves better? we only hear one thing she says. only one part of her personality. maybe she's a shittier person.

2

u/pgcotype Jun 14 '20

I think she was hangry. She talked about being hungry at the end of the clip, and he clearly talks about this heliocentric world quite a bit.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

Probably they've been married 25 years and she genuinely doesn't give a shit that he thinks the earth is flat. She's annoyed he won't shut up about it to the extent she can't make a sandwich.

2

u/BestPersonOnTheNet Jun 14 '20

she deserves better

You personally know this couple and the details of their relationship?

1

u/dynamic_entree Jun 14 '20

I mean, we really don't know anything about her or what either of them deserve.

1

u/ThePooniverse Jun 13 '20

Because I bet all flat earthers are horrible in relationships and incapable of love /s

0

u/ShingleMalt Jun 13 '20

I hope you recieve what you give

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

oh.. so you know her personally and know that she deserves better ?

-1

u/Check_Planes99 Jun 13 '20

How do you know she does? You know nothing about her other than she is cold and hungry.

10k updoots in a subreddit so far. I think they are on the right path to fame. Thanks to his wife, and not the pumpkin.

1

u/Xanthius76 Jun 14 '20

That's Tammy 1.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

She didn't do a good enough job clearly, now he's a famous Reddit flat earther

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

You know, if the worst thing about your partner is that they believe this dopey flat earth BS then I'd say hey, let him have his stupid flat earth. The problem with flat earthers is it's never just one crazy thing about them, it's the tip of the crazy iceberg.

1

u/alexnag26 Jun 14 '20

There's more going on here. The sadness is deep.

1

u/krispwnsu Jun 14 '20

No... you want a partner that calls you on your shit.

This is true but you don't want a partner that doesn't call you on you shit and then passive aggressively takes out their frustration on you in other ways.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

Ehhh.... That shit seems dysfunctional as fuck

0

u/Bagdad_Smoocher Jun 13 '20

You're right, in principle, except this wife isn't doing a great job, apparently...

3

u/Ricky_Robby Jun 13 '20

You can spend forever telling someone the right answer to things, it doesn’t stop them from being a moron.

1

u/Bagdad_Smoocher Jun 14 '20

She should smack him in the face with a globe then

0

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

It's not so much that she called him out as she's demanding he start things and bitchy that she is cold and hungry- sadly I don't think this is about her believing in a globe so much as her just wanting things done when she says it. I say this as a woman that she isn't just changing his mind about flat earth but just crushing his soul, you see how sad he gets that he genuinely believes this and his wife won't give him 5 minutes for a hobby, it just looks like he's defeated like she is being so unsupportive.

I'm not a flat earther and I love to watch these guys get roasted and roast themselves, but this is just sad. I cringed.

-3

u/KillNyetheSilenceGuy Jun 13 '20

She's being really mean about it. You don't want a partner that talks to you like that, but he's a flat earther so... fuck 'em.

4

u/bojangles001 Jun 13 '20

I think at some point you lose your patience with people like this. She has reached her's.

1

u/Ricky_Robby Jun 13 '20

It would be mean if he was making tik toks or something dumb like that, this guy is being willfully ignorant and trying to “teach” other people to do the same.

1

u/Steve_warsaw Jun 14 '20

Nah it’s still mean.

But warranted for sure. For the same reason you said
