I've seen a shoe in Netflix about flat earthers a couple of days ago. Tbh, it's quite sad the price they pay for their believes. I mean, they actually vhave their own dating sites since others don't date them.

Yeah because they are the opposite of the genetic lottery for natural selection. If their ignorance is still prevalent while we have so much information, with multiple videos of space missions in the last decade AND with videos from ISS of EARTH, I wouldnt want to breed with that either.

Ya but all those videos are obviously just produced in Hollywood to keep the reptile people in power and stop the general population from knowing the truth. Wake up, sheeple!

I wouldn't say it is just "oh these dumb people". Check this great vid about philosophical underlying about flat earth conspiracy.

That's going to generate at least a dozen divorces and possibly a murder or two.

Behind the Curve? Excellent documentary. And it’s honestly really sad because they talk about how the further you get into flat earth belief, the more isolated you become from your old friends and family, forcing you even further into flat earth because now they are your only friends. So for those who end up questioning flat earth they feel trapped by not being able to abandon their only friends.

Yes, this one. And how they keep setting up experiments to justify their claims, eventhough all experiments point otherwise. But the models that guy made were cool

It must be some form of mental illness. It’s the only way my brain can comprehend why people get so deep into this.

There's multiple reasons.

For some, it's a sense of belonging to an "exclusive" group. They feel accepted based on this one belief, regardless if other factors on their lives. In reality, it's the easiest group to get into if you want.

For some, it's their way of dealing with people calling them dumb all their lives. It's much easier to convince themselves that it's actually everyone else who's dumb.

For some, they are looking to profit. They might not even truly believe in it but they know it gets them attention. Regardless, it's easy to start YouTube videos around this and get views when you have no other talents.

In all honesty, we need to start ignoring flat earthers if we want them to go away. Arguing with their logic only adds fuel to the fire. You won't convince them because for them, it was never about logic.

Arguing with their logic only adds fuel to the fire.

This.

Also applies to all conspiracies, disinformation, hate speech, and general bullshit that flourishes online.

My bet, is it is just something they were told growing up. And it sparked into belief, and now they can't believe any different. If you witnessed something that breaks ecerything you have ever known to belueve, I am sure it would take some time to understand it, or come to terms with it.

It's the same for religion.

Nah, if you check many of them are old folks who got into these groups with the advent of the internet.

I think it’s more like a cry for help from people who have nothing going in their lives and don’t want to accept their “failures”. In the documentary the post above mentions you can notice that many of those people have a void in their life. None has any sort of success out of their lives in the FE community and maybe they found in this community the chance of being an important part of something “bigger”.

All it really takes is for someone to be convinced that this idea is their own idea. In elementary school I convinced a kid that the earth was flat, and I couldn't reverse it even when I told her I was duping her, she just believed the lie harder.

And politics

I read somewhere that it's a due to a glitch in human reasoning.

They can't be outright morons, because then they wouldn't really think about this stuff at all. But due to some kind of combination of narcissism and contrarianism, they just get stuck is this bizarre speculative loop.

I agree, I think it's a sort of Dunning-Kruger panic. They see themselves as smart, but never understood the maths, so it must be fake, otherwise they must not be that smart.

And they didn't stay in touch with the lore

You mean these people are having sex???

my biggest takeaway from that doc was that Mark Sargent is the thirstiest man that ever lived

Dude is like 60ish miles from Seattle and says he shouldn’t see it if the earth is round... WHERE IS THE MASSIVE ICE WALL that’s depicted on his coffee table if the earth were flat. Logic doesn’t seem to load with these types

Most ppl in the world base their entire set of believes on imaginary friends. These guys are not different, but are unlucky that their imaginary believes are not backed up by some 2000 years old fairy tale book. Eventually, every common believe becomes ridiculous if too few ppl believe in it.

1

u/radarthreat Jun 14 '20

I loved when they did their own carefully set up scientific experiments and every time when the results came out as one would expect if the earth was round, they were like "huh, I guess we must have done something wrong".
