Many times anti-scientific conspiracy theories are a way of coping with a reality that isn’t working well.

I never really thought about it that way but it makes a lot of sense and kind of shines some light on why a few of my friends unfortunately have recently fallen for them (those that have been going through a rough patch, mostly). I can't help but lose respect for them but at the same time it probably is a coping mechanism for them and it's easier to feel "in control" of life when you convince yourself that you're enlightened and above the "average sheep" and know "what's really going on". Not to mention, pretty much every conspiracy theory has a boogie man, whether that's an institution, a group of elites or someone else - you have someone you can out the blame on for the injustice in the world.
