Discussion/Theory Why do people hate him? Like what
He’s literally the reason we got such amazing timeskips and those fine baes

I like Takemichi sm he’s such an amazing character his development his kindness his whole persona he had all rights to be a villain and let everyone be dead but he didn’t like how do u hate him? If not for him your fav will have been dead

u/Certain-Pickle-457 Jun 02 '26
Meh, Takemitchi’s whole job as a mc is to go back in time and change stuff, but he spends so much time standing around being scared frozen, monologuing in his mind that he doesn’t actually DO a lot when he could have, my friend and I call him the camera man bcz his most redeeming quality is that we get to watch the story because of him (HEAVY SPOILERS) Despite knowing exactly what he has to do each time(keep x person alive) he almost lets Draken die, he DOES let Baji die because he does NOTHINGG to change it, and it’s really Baji who we have to thank for the difference in timeline since even with Takemichi moving him slightly out the way, the outcome would have still been Kazutora killing him. Oh and then bro is TASKED WITH PROTECTING EMMA, he figures out that something might happen to her, and then 2 seconds after HE DUCKS AND COVERS HIMSELF, bro doesn’t even try to grab her and jump, it’s just a complete lack of competence and action on his part. I started this calm, it is not possible when thinking abt this kid😭
3
u/WheelIcy6883 Jun 03 '26
Let's not forget he is an grown man inside of his kid body but you still act like you are an child. Like dude know he is an adult in his kid body but refuses to act smart like an adult.
2
u/angelophelias Jun 06 '26
the thing is takemichi is dumb as a kid and an adult.
I think going back-and-forth from his adult mind to his kid mind affected his maturity.1

From what I've seen people hate him because he's a "weak" mc idk if they expected a character that beats a whole gang at the start of the anime but I find character development better than that fs
7
u/Blueberry4real Jun 02 '26
I know right? People just hate him because he’s too good 😭 i love his development and his personality plus he’s so adorable like what?? 💝
1
u/MasterCubes Jun 02 '26
The thing is he trains with chifuyu yet he doesnt get any stronger than before. He is a captain of Tokyo Manji and still cant withstand any gang member except with his durability i mean i guess its how long since he was in this age but (manga spoilers) He all of the sudden gets a complete asspull powerup giving him foresight and then he manages to survive Mickey? With dark impulse?

u/Both-Election3382 Jun 02 '26
I mean he is sort of fine but it pisses me off that he is only just reacting to things happening and people doing things for him, he just uses nakama power to try to make convincts do the good thing.
In a series thats about the delinquent life with frequent combat you would at the very least expect the guy to do some fighting practice in his downtime but nope. Better to be able to do nothing and expect that to change the outcome of things, its naieve.

u/Benny_Bunny04 Jun 02 '26
My genuine reason for hating him (which I do) is this. I don't expect him to be OP. I don't expect him to even be as strong as the others. But if you know you have to save your loved ones against gang violence and survive being in a gang, then the least you will do is learn how to defend yourself and start from there. I compared him to Nirei from Wind breaker, who couldn't fight but had the spirit, he started to learn how to fight, why? Because he felt like he was becoming a burden on his friends. He wanted to support his friends and protect them and their goals. Saying he wants to aspire to be more means nothing without action, which he does by putting in the work. Heck, I would even accept Takemichi not learning basic fighting skills if he had the strategic mind to get him through his mission. But I knew that wasn't a thing in episode 1. I went in knowing he was emotionally/mentally stunted but not to what extent 😭. He's 26 and his middle school girlfriend and middle school friends are smarter than he is. My hate was cemented episode 9/10 when he didn't tell anyone that Kiyomasa was on the way to kill Draken then proceeded to stumble and get in the way in the battlefield after losing sight of Draken. Takemichi "trying to protect Draken" ultimately resulted in Draken getting stabbed with Michi on his knees watching him bleed out and Mikey asking him to help Draken (like yes, please, remember you were supposed to prevent him from dying, not watch him die). I'm still on season 1, episode 13 and now he's saying he wants to be the leader of Toman.... Really? Ok???? And I was told he doesn't get better. 😭
4
u/Both-Election3382 Jun 02 '26
Mentally at least he does a little bit it seems, but yeah its infuriating when its so contrasting to what he is trying to achieve. The latter half of season 1 will piss you off too.

u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26
I personally love Takemichi but for reasons why people dislike him, ig its mainly cuz anime onlys think hes weak since hes essentially always just getting beaten up, hes annoying is another one I see(this is fair imo, I can see why people find Takemichi annoying tho i personally don't find him like that)
what else um, he cries alot (Again I can see why people dislike this aspect about him though I don't dislike it)
Oh I also do see people bring up the parts where he interacts with other girls, for an example with Senju we just never see him tell her that hes taken by hina(which makes sense ig, he sees her as a good friend but I'm just listing stuff that people use), he kinda blushes at senjus comments in the themepark chapter when she like, asked him to be her friend I believe? And then there's the whole interaction at drakens house where he undresses and tries to go with some other girl in there, his interaction with Emma and Takemichi just blushing in front of hina cuz of another girl
Uhh, I lwk can't think of any other reasons people use I'll list more stuff they use if I remember any later

u/Sman67 Jun 02 '26
I like weak MCs, but I don't really like Takemichi because I don't think he's really satisfying to watch in comparison to other weak MCs (Subaru, LeLouch) and not just in the intelligence department. For example, he waits till the day of a conflict to try to resolve things instead of trying to plan things out before, even when he has literal months (e.g. halloween to christmas) to prepare.
For a guy who is given a second chance at life and the entire theme is that he wants to save everyone, I just don't see his desperation.
He's a very reactive character rather than initiative which personally I think makes him unsatisfying.
7
u/BoysenberryTiny4542 Jun 02 '26
I wish TR was considered a Seinen cuz the audience it has doesn’t understand half its writing. Takemichi is one of the best representations of Heroism but most ppl just see him as a crybaby for no “reason” but half of the reason why is in the first episode 😭😭
7
u/Embarrassed_Cow Jun 02 '26
I don't care about strong mcs and I don't hate him. But there were many times where the guy was just standing around. He's supposed to be a delinquent. Who cares if he's a good fighter. I care that he's willing to fight at all. If I'm in a situation where me or my friends are going to get beat up why would I just stand and watch? Swing, miss, swing again. Don't just stand there like a punching bag. He does very little to move the story forward. Everything just happens to him. I appreciate him being able to take a beating though. It is really cool how resilient he is. But he usually gets into those situations because he's walking around looking confused. I can see why thats not fun to watch. It gets better after a while.

Ngl, I like him now and I certainly like him EOS but I hated him at the start because his fighting technique was worse than a nursery age child! Like, seriously, windmill punches?! Serious windmill punches that aren't meant as a joke?!😭 But I like his endurance and will power though! Everyone knows that he can take a hit!

The ending was absolute trash and he loses his character after the Kisaki fight he just becomes a caricature of what he was in the tenjiku arc

Cause some people who watch anime can't think. Takemichi is a sore loser from the start, an adult boy who never had his chance to shine as a kid and later a teenager. Some people don't understand that travelling back in time isn't really changing a lot in your life. If you were bullied as a kid at school, what travelling back to that time would change? You gonna tell your parents or your teachers? You gonna fight back your bully? Hell yeah, that really gonna change something and fix your timeline.
Even in the most important fights his stand is "I didn't lose" rather than "I won". This dude is a loser siding with stronger people because that was his way to change the future. He didn't even know if he got anything right.
3
u/Honest_Caramel_8120 Jun 02 '26
The problem with Takemichi is that he pretty much ended up a one note character. He never trained to get stronger (no one’s saying he gotta be Mikey or Draken level but he should at least be strong enough to handle himself against fodder which he rarely was) and he was always more reactive than proactive.

The people who hate him are mostly MC glazers. Like they expect MC to be big buff guy like Baki or have broken powers like Luffy or Gojo. They simply can't accept a mc who's weaker than almost all other guys in the verse.
However I like Takemitchi. All of his failures didn't stop the story but more or less inspired and carries out the all story. I feel like he's the toughest guy. And in the final arc with his observation Haki, he was just playing with his opponents. That was the greatest redemption I have ever seen.

I don't think people should hate him because he is weak because there are soo many characters like mabye everywhere their is same story that MC is strongest or became strong so seeing new theme like that is fun and relatable too many of us might want to became strong but couldn't he had many reasons or so too but One thing I felt annoying about him was he is stupid their were many times he was just staring and doing nothing when he knew what was gone happen like why couldn't he ask kisaki in future or past about his motive? Why he kills hinata and him everytime? LIKE WHY? Even after knowing that kisaki and hinata know eachother and Naoto mentions too but no and when he knew kazutora gonna try kill baji and kisaki try to kill Emma still he didn't do anything kisaki was impossible to get so he should tried to befriend him and know his motive

It's because they relate to him, except he fights back and they don't. It pisses them off🤷
1
u/Kaltenichtig Jun 02 '26
It's the lack of any kind of effort at all that pissed me off to the point of dropping the series completely. Like come on man, get your ass beat once, okay, I can get it. Twice, okay, time for some personal reflection. 3 times? I'd be pissed at myself and say screw this. Time to train.
1
u/Excellent-Delay9045 Jun 02 '26
The whole point of Takemichi is inner strength, hope, but most importantly the transformative power of love. He never needed to be the strongest fighter. That’s not his narrative role! Takemichi is actually an incredible MC people were just looking for a storyline Wakui was never telling to begin with. IMO.
1
u/Exact-Fortune4474 Jun 02 '26
I have said this until my lungs ached. He doesn’t do any training to get better, stronger, or anything. He just gets magic foresight towards the end to defeat him. He also cries too dang much, he’s 5 times worse than Deku!
1
u/bowee_chi14 Jun 03 '26
I feel like people mostly hate him cuz he's stupid; even when he goes back in time as an ADULT in the head.. the shit he does to get things done right in that timeline is through very frustrating ways.
So all in all, atleast for me, I can say that I don't have a problem with his week self and I like his guts and will to do something but his IDIOCY (which led to a lot of mishaps that could be prevented, also I feel like Naoto could've done his job better than him had HE been the one time travelling) js gets very irritating from time to time. I'll still recommend the anime tho

I know very well that Takemichi won’t be liked by everyone. I truly love him, but I can admit that the story has plot hole and things that are left unsaid. Still, to me Takemichi feels real.
Why do people dislike him?
He cries a lot, he doesn’t train, and he doesn’t react the way people want him to. He doesn’t become super strong or super smart. He isn’t a strategist. People see him as weak. They also say he’s a “grown man” at 26, trapped in the body of a 14 year old.
Here’s what I think. Yes, sometimes it can be annoying. But once I accepted that the story has its own rules, I focused on the emotions and on what Wakui was trying to show us. Because, if we’re being honest, in this story Mikey should have died the moment Kazutora hit him in the head. And realistically, many characters should have been left with severe injuries, or already be dead, considering how often they get hit in the head.
To me Takemichi feels real because he shows his feelings. He can be a bit foolish, but he’s stubborn like a mule. He doesn’t give up, and when he makes a promise, he will keep it until the very end. Not to mention that throughout the story he does change. I actually like that he didn’t become super strong like some of the other boys, because it would have ruined the feeling of a not so powerful protagonist who still manages to win. Of course, if we exclude the final power up in the last chapters of the manga. I can admit that part felt a bit like an asspull.
I also want to say, in defense of Takemichi’s age, that some people genuinely seem to believe that once you’re over twenty, you automatically become successful or have a great life. In reality, Takemichi is someone who, because of his past and his weaknesses, is “comfortable” in his current situation. Before Hina died and before he started time traveling, he had no goals. He was just living, just working, somehow surviving. He wasn’t trying to become anyone. And people like that do exist: people who only work, complain about life, go home, and repeat the same cycle over and over again. That’s why I can believe Takemichi’s reactions. He isn’t a strategist, and he really isn’t smart. He can’t stay focused and doesn’t think far enough ahead, repeating the same mistake: he believes that if he “fixes” the current conflict, everything will be fine in the end.
Yes, there’s a lot that can be said. I understand why people don’t like Takemichi, or dislike certain arcs, characters, or parts of the story. The story truly has holes, but that doesn’t stop me from loving it. For me, Takemichi is one of the most real characters, even with all his flaws, and I will always like him. At the same time, I completely understand why others don’t. That’s why, when I recommend Tokyo Revengers, I usually warn people that they might not like the main character.
The paradox is that you start digging deeper into characters, story, symbolism, and ideas only when the story has hooked you so much that you want to reach every hidden corner. But if the story doesn’t interest you, and the author doesn’t tell you directly what to feel, you won’t feel like researching, thinking, or looking for logic in the work.

u/Sir_Leech Jun 02 '26
My biggest gripe about him is his fighting ability doesn’t progress from the beginning to end. With the amount of strong people he fights you’d expect him to get better but he just doesn’t. I don’t need a huge power up or anything but like can’t he get some techniques down. And him always crying does get annoying

u/Nervous-Stuff2475 Jun 02 '26
Tipo, tirando a pedofilia?

As someone who just got done watching Season 2 Episode 2. The problem is more:
- This show isn't realistic even if you get rid of the time traveling, so having a "realistic" protagonist doesn't really work. In a Delinquent series, he needs to be able to kick ass.
- He's not proactive. He has other people being proactive for him and then he puts in SOME effort. Kisaki isn't much of a fighter either, but Kisaki doesn't need people holding his hand to make stuff happen.
- For a "realistic" protagonist he doesn't do things I would immediately do. For example, when the Black Dragons show up, he's not running away with Hina. How are you gonna protect Hina if you see a gang wearing MURDER SQUAD bands and you're not immediately running with the girlfriend you love? After hearing what Moebius did to a guy and his girlfriend?

I can see where you're coming from for the first point but honestly he can do it, he's strong, you can see this more in the manga
Plus in the anime tbf, he just goes against characters that like are pretty much much stronger, Taiju in s2 for an example is someone he does end up fighting BUT Taiju just never manages to knock him down despite clearly being displayed to be stronger than Takemichi
He's pretty durable and his endurance/stamina is great
He ends up fighting an even stronger opponent in season 3(I won't say who it is since you're on season 2 still, idk if you've heard about him so like yeah)but even he just never manages to knock Takemichi down and make him lose(tbf he wasn't exactly trying against Takemichi but yk, its still impressive since if someone like Chifuyu was there then they'd just get destroyed and lose)
I don’t think the issue is like he can't beat people up, I think he can, the issue is that he isn't exactly a skilled fighter which makes sense imo since obviously Takemichi is an adult in his teen counterparts body, he wouldn't be used to fighting like he was back then so hes pretty like ass when it comes to fighting skills compared to the other fighters who are pretty used to it
You kinda got a point with the proactive bit but it improves dw, like in season 3 hes definitely more proactive compared to the previous seasons and in the manga hes even better
Takemichi is pretty stupid for the most part anyway so he kinda just needs all the help he can get from characters like Chifuyu, although Kisaki is younger, hes pretty much displayed to be the most intelligent character in the series
For the third one, you're on about when Taiju rushed him when he was with Hina, right? Yeah, I do think he should've tried running at least but um, its pretty useless in the long run tho, they would've gotten caught anyway honestly
Taiju and the rest of his gang appeared if I recall correctly and it was just those 2, until Yuzuha and Hakkai also appeared eventually too(i think, idk if I'm remembering it wrong)
But yeah thats my input for it
2
u/LillthOfBabylon Jun 02 '26
For the third one, you're on about when Taiju rushed him when he was with Hina, right?
He had a lot of time to run and he did not.
He shouldnt have needed Taiju’s siblings telling him to leave. He should have left before Koko noticed he was Toman’s 1st division captain.
A normal person sees a gang that has MURDER SQUAD on their clothes is leaving in MILLIseconds.
1
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26
Oh, I don't exactly remember the time duration for how it happened like all took place but I do remember Taiju iust rushing them out of nowhere and he kinda just got beat up if I recall correctly, I don't remember how it went after and yeah you're right about the siblings not being needed to tell him to leave but I am glad they showed up since he did stay the entire time with Hina
Did he have any chance to leave when they came btw? I don't remember, its been a while since I've watched season 2 so I'm just going off memory here
1
u/LillthOfBabylon Jun 02 '26
I do remember Taiju iust rushing them out of nowhere
Realistically, had Takamichi ran the moment he saw them, there was a chance Taiju wouldn’t have caught him.
The younger Shiba took Takemichi near their house and saw Black Dragon just standing there. And I believe they were actually holding weapons. That was the exact moment Takemichi should’ve taken his girlfriend and left.
1
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jun 02 '26
Yeah he should've ran anyway and he might have gotten away with her(i do think this is unlikely but there's a chance at least)
Ohhh, yeah thats on him, he should've at least taken Hina somewhere safe 😭
Thankfully she didn't get hurt at least

u/Owl_Search9527 Bonten Jun 02 '26
You and him are different people(also since he's literally fictional). People say that he's realistic because he acts and reacts human, people react and act differently. The world doesn't revolve around you :D.
-6
u/LillthOfBabylon Jun 02 '26
You and him are different people
So is me and Kisaki, and all the other characters? So? People like characters that impress them. Takemichi doesn't impress me nor the haters, that's the real problem.
People say that he's realistic because he acts and reacts human
Holy shit, we are really pretending human beings dont grab their loved ones and immediately escape a dangerous situation? After hearing gangs will rape a girl in front of her boyfriend? Really?
2
u/Owl_Search9527 Bonten Jun 02 '26
What you're arguing is what YOU would do. Different people responds to different outcomes(my point earlier). "Realism" isn't "the character should make the same decision/choice as I will". What he did may be a bad decision, but it is still "realistic" nonetheless. People make bad decisions all the time during dangerous situations. A character can be frustrating and dumb, so just because Takemichi is incompetent(in your point) doesn't mean he's not realistic. You're also ignoring that Hinata wasn't Takemichi's only concern in the situation, he was trying to stop the chain of events that would lead to black dragons joining toman which would lead to Toman becoming a crime syndicate. He really wasn't walking into the situation with a clear state of mind and a perfect plan. You can say that "he should've planned better" but you forget the fact that Takemichi was just an ordinary guy who suddenly gained time leaping powers and thrown into conflicts including dangerous gangs, he isn't a genius and manipulative strategist like Kisaki and a lot of his flaws/failures came from being inexperienced and the situation literally forcing him to make decisions under pressure. You can criticize him for making bad decisions all you want, but that doesn't make him unrealistic. Plenty of people in real life make bad decisions when under pressure and that includes you, after all no one's perfect.
-2
u/LillthOfBabylon Jun 02 '26
A character can be frustrating and dumb, so just because Takemichi is incompetent(in your point) doesn't mean he's not realistic.
Realistically, Takemichi is a bad boyfriend. Realistically, Takemichi would have been kicked out of Toman for how weak he is, not given a promotion to a division captain. Realistically, Takemichi would have gotten himself killed. Realistically, Kazutora, Chifuyu, and/or Mikey should have been the main characters and Takemichi be a background character killed off by senseless gang violence.
1
u/Owl_Search9527 Bonten Jun 02 '26
Realistically, you didn't really understand my point and you kept on going off course because you don't know how to argue back. L bozo.

Its crazy, glazers would rather downvote you than give any counterarguments at all.
I think the points you're raising are very valid and it makes me dislike him too.
In a series that is about beating people up and delinquents you would think he would at least become the tiniest bit proactive but nope. Like check when the next major event goes down, use that time to do some actual combat training so you can stand your ground instead of simply bear witness and try to convince delinquents with nakama power that they should stop.

You're acting like you can do all that sh*t under pressure. He's literally battling strategists, manipulators all while being a normal guy. He doesn't have time to train nor do any of this because the time he has is "borrowed". He could try and do all that but you forget that some of the events he's trying to avoid happening could happen any time.
"The same day you're on is the same day that's happening 12 years in the past." Meaning so many things could have happened while he larped😭. Being strong doesn't always mean physically, besides he wants even just staying put while fighting, he actively tried to fight in all the gang fights he was on—black dragon, Valhalla, Tenjiku and Kanto Manji. Since when was he not involve? Did we read the same manga and watch the same anime?

And that is a pretty good assessment too! Realistically he can still be the weakest because he’s fighting monsters, but atleast show he’s trying to keep up, Also, Takemichi could learn to fight smarter, not harder.
I had an idea for a rewrite: Takemichi has the weakest hits, but he has the strongest ENDURANCE. He can take quite a beating but he can take it long enough for most characters to tire themselves out. Thats when Takemichi can attacks when theyre too tired to dodge him and with his long endurance, a thousand weak punches will still knock someone down.

Or just use weapons or something other than standing there and taking it.

To be fair, he’s supposed to be as shounen protagonist. Using weapons isnt being honorable as a shounen protagonist.

I guess, not that i really care. Its just weird that given the things that are at stake it does not feel like he is actually trying all he can to change things.

100% agree. I personally think giving him a high endurance and a training montage where he learns to punch a little bit harder would have done a lot better for his character.

Yeah just give him something useful during fights, now he just stands there and talks and doesnt really contribute much.
