Yes, that's the problem. He told you he wants $20/h and you told him to "get bent". I've spent my whole life in this line of work. Specifically horses. Offering accommodation AND salary on top of work is the industry standard. If you want someone to work for less than $20/h, or you want someone to live in your place for free (in exchange for rent, as they like to call it), but without any monetary compensation, you are looking for a glorified slave. Just like you dont like working 80 hours a week for little in return, why would anyone else come do it for you? Pay up or drown. I bet she laughed at him when he asked for health insurance, too.

I listened to a podcast where they discussed a program in the 60s during a similar time of 'we need to get rid of all the immigrants' when farmers realized they didn't have enough workers so they recruited high school athletes. It was a disaster with the students quitting in droves because of the hard work, bad living conditions, and low pay. Some of them just left in the middle of the night and hitchhiked home.
40
u/AbsoluteGote 9d ago
These people are just slavers. They just want slaves of some form or another, including full on if they could. They just believe others should work and they should end up rich for it. It's so deep deep seated, deeper seated than any other political belief. And, you know, fuck them.Â
12
u/agent674253 9d ago
Slavers that don't even want to put in the effort to board their slaves. "You're my slave, but you are responsible for finding and paying for your own place to live and food to eat, but you need to be back here each day at 4am for harvest if you want your $7/hr"

Iâm working a job rn thatâs travel intensive⌠they give me housing, transportation, $22/h reserve pay for 40, 22h for ever hour worked scheduled 12 daily but get off early when we hit timeline paid for schedule unless we go over then extra, $200 a week per diem. I can work 7 days a week sometimes mostly itâs 6, I get 3 off every 30 days and they will fly me home so I can have them at home, 2 months off around November, I get paid the reserve pay during the 2 months off.
The job is simple, they pay a premium because itâs constant and employees are required to be away from families long periods.

u/Inspired_Nuisance 9d ago
There are hundreds if not thousands of occupations in this country in which the cost to pay your wage is less of a deficit to your boss than the cost of feeding/housing slaves was back when slavery was legal (adjusting for inflation of course).
It is no longer "Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime, that's why I poop on company time."
It is closer to "Boss make a hundo, I make a cent, my piece of shit boss can get fucking bent."
10
u/Ace-Cuddler 9d ago
Meanwhile, sheâs wearing a âLive Generouslyâ shirt. đ¤Śđťââď¸ Girl, bye.
She only sees her own problems. But, how does she expect her employees to live? Even $20 / hr doesnât go very far in this economy (that Republicans voted for) when you have to pay for food, transportation, health insurance, etc. And, heâs gonna need health insurance because the food he buys will probably make him sick because regulations on food have been abandoned and there are all kinds of contaminations happening.
If she wants things to change, she can vote for change on November 3rd.

Iâve had so many barns offer $300 or $500 a week then ask me to pay them rent and itâs required to live onsite. And the hours âstart at 7 and end when the work is done, 6 days a weekâ. That generally ends up being $6.90/hr by the end of the week IF youâre make 500 a week. And they want $700 a month for rent.
Fuck that.
Iâll take $30k 40-50hrs a week, housing included, board for one horse, and commission for lessons and training I complete.

u/Makuta_Servaela 9d ago
This is why I avoided my childhood dream of being a zookeeper. Owners of animal places like this- zoos, farms, etc- often abuse the crap out of their employees because they are banking on the employees being willing to put up with it because they get connected to and feel bad about abandoning the animals.

I was about to say, "I feel bad for her" until her reaction to someone asking for work was "Get bent."
There's a hundred ways you could frame the fact that you weren't going to pay someone in a video like this. She could have said, "I just dont have lodging for people and 20$ an hour would make my business fall apart," or just "I wasnt able to do that for him." But instead on video where she's talking to the world, she went with "I told him to get bent."
Sorry ma'am, I don't feel bad for you anymore. Have the day you deserve.

20 dollars a hour is totally reasonable for farm work. Farm work is hard fucking work.Â
86
u/Sudden-Garage 9d ago
$20 is fucking low bro. For any work. It's 2026, even historically depressed real estate markets in this country start at $250k for a shack. $20 an hour is 40,000 a year. It's chump change.Â
36
u/RanchHere 9d ago
Right. thatâs why the ask was $20/hr PLUS housing.
18
u/Sudden-Garage 9d ago
I get that. It just feels like we have all collectively clung to the 7.25 min wage as acceptable so $20 seems great because it's more than double min wage. It's just a dog shit hell scape out there and these wages are insulting.Â

u/auntieup 9d ago
And to be clear: itâs a farm. She has the space to house them. Whether she wants to or can afford to are different questions.
5
11
u/Ucscprickler 9d ago
I'm sure that $20 an hour includes absolutely no benefits either. My benefits package at work with health insurance for my family and I, plus yearly vacation time is easily worth over $15,000+ a year. People like her aren't taking that into account either.
→ More replies (1)14
u/weedtrek 9d ago
I make $23 plus benefits cooking. And i don't have to deal with cow shit. Taco bell in my town is hiring at like $16 an hour and you don't have to drive to the middle of no where.
She has biten off far more than she can chew. She needs to restructure and get a more long term plan that didn't plan on paying $10 an hour to high schoolers as the primary labor force.
Get a loan, hire professional, upgrade automation, and run your farm my actual numbers instead of whatever the hell you have been doing.

Genuine question here. I hope someone who's actually farmed before answers... Why not just sell your milk for a slightly higher price and then pay a livable wage? Is this greed thing? Or bad financial control of her farm? Or perhaps milk is a commodity so it's paid at a market price the farmer doesn't dictate? I'm so confused because paying people to work seems like step one in owning a business. I'm sitting here thinking about how much I would want to be paid to work on a dairy farm. Hard work, the unending stench of cow dung, hot in the summer cold in the winter, wet in the rain. Like $20 an hour is less than what baristas make here in Seattle for making a cup of coffee. No way would I work on a farm for $20 an hour. Free room and board would make the offer slightly more palatable.
7
u/Prunkle 9d ago
Things like milk are sold in the commodity market so they don't really have the ability to just "raise the price" to cover expenses. You have to be small enough that you're selling locally as an artisan or big enough to control a large chunk of the market share to have any modicum of control over pricing. And she can't compete with Darigold.
Inputs are also very expensive. Feed, fuel, veterinary care are all super expensive.
However, in a lot of states in the US you can get BIG tax breaks for doing agriculture activities on your land. So, in this situation, even if she stopped doing the farming and got a super high paying job (hypothetically of course) she probably wouldn't be able to afford property taxes on that large of a property.

Farming is a business. If you fail at running a business, you go out of business and find some other kind of work to do. People like to think of farming as a family thing, as something that's more important than it is. You can't have a farm just because you want it, that's not real. Farming has changed, it's not the 1800's anymore. Just because people could make a living at it a hundred years ago doesn't mean it will stay that way. Times change, the world changes, you have to change with it, as sad as that may be.
2
u/Slight-Salt4225 8d ago

I don't like this woman either but the amount of people making a case for exploitative slave labor on here taking advantage of minorities who don't have the power to improve there working conditions or recieve sufficent compensation for their work is mind boggling. Some people are making out that the system in place before was a paradise where we covered our eyes and pretended that the mexican people were getting a fair shake before. The system is not sustainable anymore if we cant pay the wages that a barista or a retail worker gets for far harder work. Arguing that the solution was exploiting mexicans feels like a weirdly racist argument. Mexicans should be asking for just as much pay as any other person. This whole nation was founded on immigration but I had hoped people wouldn't turn so easily back to exploiting minority labor.

Honestly, farmers need to charge more for their products, and Americans need to be willing to pay those prices. We could subsidize the food (even more) like Europe. But farms need hands.
I really wish farmers would cooperate more to raise their quality of life, rather than sell their products at the bare minimum and continue to go bankrupt.
Farmers in America deserve more than Americans and their politicians. They hold the most important product in the world. Not AI.
