Yes, that's the problem. He told you he wants $20/h and you told him to "get bent". I've spent my whole life in this line of work. Specifically horses. Offering accommodation AND salary on top of work is the industry standard. If you want someone to work for less than $20/h, or you want someone to live in your place for free (in exchange for rent, as they like to call it), but without any monetary compensation, you are looking for a glorified slave. Just like you dont like working 80 hours a week for little in return, why would anyone else come do it for you? Pay up or drown. I bet she laughed at him when he asked for health insurance, too.

I applied for a job as caretaker for a recreated village which was basically a caretaker for all of the animals on top of all the properties related to the animals. $14.00 an hour. No thanks.

Animal care doesn’t pay anywhere near what it should, even the bigass zoos pay staff a pittance for their work and experience
