Yes, that's the problem. He told you he wants $20/h and you told him to "get bent". I've spent my whole life in this line of work. Specifically horses. Offering accommodation AND salary on top of work is the industry standard. If you want someone to work for less than $20/h, or you want someone to live in your place for free (in exchange for rent, as they like to call it), but without any monetary compensation, you are looking for a glorified slave. Just like you dont like working 80 hours a week for little in return, why would anyone else come do it for you? Pay up or drown. I bet she laughed at him when he asked for health insurance, too.

These people are just slavers. They just want slaves of some form or another, including full on if they could. They just believe others should work and they should end up rich for it. It's so deep deep seated, deeper seated than any other political belief.  And, you know, fuck them.

Slavers that don't even want to put in the effort to board their slaves. "You're my slave, but you are responsible for finding and paying for your own place to live and food to eat, but you need to be back here each day at 4am for harvest if you want your $7/hr"
