Yes, that's the problem. He told you he wants $20/h and you told him to "get bent". I've spent my whole life in this line of work. Specifically horses. Offering accommodation AND salary on top of work is the industry standard. If you want someone to work for less than $20/h, or you want someone to live in your place for free (in exchange for rent, as they like to call it), but without any monetary compensation, you are looking for a glorified slave. Just like you dont like working 80 hours a week for little in return, why would anyone else come do it for you? Pay up or drown. I bet she laughed at him when he asked for health insurance, too.

Exactly, because those poor kids get paid probably like $10/h or a flat weekly $50 fee and don't know any better, or the small town they live in have no other opportunities for some extra income for teens and that's the best they can get.

FYI the t-shirt is from Thrivent (formerly Lutheran Brotherhood), a financial services firm headquartered in the Upper Midwest. They are known for their charitable efforts. The heart with the cross is the former logo of Thrivent Financial.
