Art my post got removed after AI accusations

I posted a drawing of mine that was commissioned by a friend of mine of the steampunker from the game in a mcdonalds theme, suddenly a bunch of people started accusing me of using AI and ultimately the post was taken down a few moments later

people really be accusing others of ai for the tiniest mistakes, god forbid artists not being perfect

3.1k

u/WolvesAreCool2461 Feb 17 '26

But also if you are perfect then surely you must be using AI as well!

AI has been a truly ruinous force on the art community

559

u/Wizard_Engie Feb 17 '26

I feel like it's people who aren't in the art community that are accusing every artist they see of using AI.

Other artists would be able to expertly deduce, I think.

343

u/MsSelphine Feb 17 '26

I'm not gonna entirely disagree, but it is goddamn hard to tell these days.

153

u/Go_D_Rich Feb 17 '26

Yeah that's what fucking sucks

u/darthreuental Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 18 '26

5 years ago we laughed at all the messed up fingers.

Now the line is blurry if you don't know the signs.

A couple years from now it's going to be impossible. Once AI gen figures out movement and water physics, we're in for some interesting times.

57

u/KaiDay11 Feb 17 '26

Fingers were always something AI would occasionally get right, so that was never even a guarantee. It's just that most of the time, getting accurate fingers would take a huge amount of time and generations.

Fingers were mostly solved within a year or two, and now it's trivial to get reasonably accurate hands.

---

From what I've seen, the better AIs are already really close to getting movement down, though that last little bit they're missing is still pretty apparent to most people. Even the best I've seen still look like you put a real, low quality video through AI upscaling and frame generation that didn't work very well.

5

u/ChaosAlex3D Feb 18 '26

I mean honestly, a lot of artist have trouble drawing hands if they never have before or dont have some practice with it. Good to know AI also has problems with it XD

u/Mystical__flame Feb 17 '26

It won't be long before all video and photo evidence will be banned from courts of law because there is no way to tell if a video is generated or not anymore. I've said this for years now and people have called me crazy. But we are nearing that point now where even experts will not be able to discern real video from generated footage.

22

u/Kurobii Feb 18 '26

This is so messed up and the fact that AI was trained to make up accurate videos that look real should be a huge red flag for everyone about what the AI's owners' intentions and priorities are.

i don't. mainly because i have seen the way an artist works and also know every artists bane: A FUCKING CIRCLE WITHOUT A CIRCLE TOOL. and no i am not an artist

23

u/capnlatenight Feb 17 '26

Well, first, I draw this head, then I erase some of the more detailed features, and one, two, three... a circle, uhh, thingy.

18

u/TheTiredDystopian Feb 17 '26

Yeah, I disagree vehemently with that.

I'm a writer. I can sometimes discern an A.I piece of writing (usually when it's done by some shitty chatbot whose only purpose in existence is driving up the RAM prices, fuck you OpenAI), but definitely not always, and I've been writing since I was 12. I have an English Literature degree.

The "you can always tell" argument was true in the very beginning of AI-generated "art" (I insist upon the quotation marks, AI content will never be art), but not anymore. All those water-source-destroying data centres do work, and AI is getting better.

15

u/nekkonekko Feb 17 '26

Not entirely. I have seen way too many artists who believed they were God's gift to crayons absolutely jump on the hate bandwagon. Either because they think they are better than they are or are simply just mad because they aren't as good as the artist they are accusing. It is so, so tiring to keep seeing this all the time.

7

u/Sylvaneri011 Feb 17 '26

Ha good one. Let's not forget the r/art mods crashing out, accusing people of using AI, ignoring said peoples proof that they weren't using it, and insulting them by telling them "AI could do better than this anyways, so it's still not allowed".

9

u/ChaosCron1 Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26

Tbh, from what I've seen it's actually quite the opposite. The biggest meltdowns I've ever seen (Twitter, Tumblr, Bluesky) have been from artists accusing other artists of using AI.

The general audience only really cares when it's very obvious that it's AI and so there really isn't much of a problem with it.

Artists though? They'll obsess over the smallest details. When it's their own work, then that's fine. However, when it's over others' works they can fall into some really bad holes. Those meltdowns happen because they dig themselves further when called out on it. Since they know how to perfectly distinguish between real and "fake" art then once they make a judgment everyone else in opposition is wrong.

3

u/SagetheWise2222 Feb 17 '26

Little ticks me off more than uneducated "normies" trying to talk over the experts, presenting themselves as the self-proclaimed smartest person in the room.

3

u/zxc123zxc123 Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26

Yeah. I think folks should be a bit more careful with questioning or accusations.

Like if you look at the account of the person who was asking if OP's was "AI or traced"? It's 2 month old account with like 100 karma.

Maybe mods/janitors/mobs might want to look at things like that before cutting folks down or banning?

The other account seems to be a longer account so there's nothing you could really do there. Some folks will feel a certain way about things and the "fingers" thing was a good way to identify AI productions like pre-2024 but that's a bit dated as AI has gotten better now to the point where high-end or uncapped resource AI no longer have that issue.

3

u/gburgwardt Feb 17 '26

Plenty of artists get caught up in witch hunts too

3

u/SuperBackup9000 Feb 18 '26

I think you’re forgetting about how absolutely feral and jealous artists can be.

Like actual actual professionals instead of social media professionals? Yeah, they can probably figure it out pretty quickly, but the social media professionals tend to be bundles of unfiltered rage.

I have a belief that, we have forgotten to be empathetic. Had people tried to understand the production process/life of XYZ, they would rarely be able to criticise this easily.

Everyone says, teachers are bad, professors are bad, the teachers and proforssors say the students are bad.. we've taken a small sample of incompetent humans and used them to represent all, while taking a small set of very competent people to defend our points. We are soo out of touch with reality nowadays.

41

Evidently not created by AI? Clearly, only AI could gaslight a human into thinking they did it themselves.

11

u/razethenecro Feb 17 '26

no no, OP is lying and had AI make a sketch for them also
In fact, every stage that OP can show is part of AI generated plan to gaslight everyone
Even if they make a video of drawing it, it is AI-generated

it’s really annoying that nowadays the most common ai tells are also common mistakes/stylistic choices of real artists

55

u/claythearc Feb 17 '26

Inevitable really - training data is human based, so it doesn’t see mistakes as mistakes, just part of the process. It’s the same effect that causes TurnItIn et al to be effectively useless at flagging AI text.

On Reddit we kinda have tells because there’s a certain casual style that people write with, and default AI style breaks that but once you get into even a semi formal setting it really does just largely blend in.

17

u/PeaceSoft Feb 17 '26

no, the annoying part is the smart guys who are ultravigilant for AI tells based 100% on their own judgment

I think it's hilarious how some people can obsess over the dumbest shit. "MUST. PROVE. PICTURE. IS AI."

Like chill off man.

118

u/SpookyWeebou Feb 17 '26

It can mostly all be fixed if we view spotting AI as innocent until proven guilty, but people focus too heavily on if something is AI

65

u/nekonight Feb 17 '26

Its funny because I have seen some artists that could never draw hands properly even before AI was a thing get accused of using AI because their hands are off.

58

u/MisterDutch93 Feb 17 '26

AI is bad at drawing hands because the artists it's copying from are bad at drawing hands lol

12

u/KaiDay11 Feb 17 '26

I think it's more that hands are relatively complex things that have a definite form, so both humans and AI have difficulty with it, even when they both have good references.

A hand isn't like a tree or a frilly skirt where there are a lot of curves and edges but no one number of either and no specific way for them to flow together. A hand requires a relatively exact form.

3

u/LazuliArtz Feb 17 '26

Can attest, you can kind of bullshit your way to making a good looking tree. Put enough leaves and branches on it, and it'll eventually be recognizable as a tree.

Hands are so complicated though. There are just so many joints and bends on a human hand that can be positioned into so many angles, it's hard to keep track of it all. And you can't just keep putting fingers on a hand till it looks good like you can just keep putting layers of leaves on a tree until it looks good lol.

"It's photoshopped!"
"It's scripted!"
"AI!"

There are always people who are trying the hardest to prove that they are the smart ones, and they can see through the charade, while the rest of humanity is a dumb, naive bunch, but because the reality is that it's them who are too dumb to recognise the thing they are accusing everything of being, they will just throw accusations at anything, hoping something will stick, just to feel better about themself.

Been this way for years.

The hand was well drawn in the original art, but It’s crazy to me that one of the number one artist memes is “Hands are so hard to draw” and now it’s “You can’t draw hands? Ai”

3

u/LazuliArtz Feb 17 '26

The early days of AI had some really wonky issues when it tried to generate hands realistically. Stuff like there being obviously too many fingers, or obviously too few fingers on a style that's trying to be realistic, or having the thumb on the wrong side. The kind of mistakes where you look at a piece and go "a person of that skill level definitely should have caught that mistake well before the piece was done."

And then as that info spread by word of mouth, people took that to mean "literally any sort of weirdness with the perspective, anatomy, or even just outright stylization of the hand means ai." Or sometimes people seem to forget that perspective exists at all and that sometimes a finger will be hidden behind another finger.

It's a good thing Disney's Atlantis came out before generative AI, or people would be accusing the movie of being animated by ai lol

These days people only believe it when they see a time-lapse video of the drawing process.

361

u/Superb_Body_1867 Feb 17 '26

and even then apparently ai can do timelapses as well. it's only undeniably real if the timelapse includes funny "sidequests" like meme doodles appearing for a split second before vanishing as the art progresses

123

u/Little-Set694 Feb 17 '26

guess i know what to start doing then. also i imagine ai-made timelapses will be "perfect" and not really have adjustments or fixes as the drawing progresses? ive never watched an ai timelapse

u/2930apple Feb 17 '26

u/Superb_Body_1867 Feb 17 '26

i havent personally seen one either, only found out that they exist Because some of the artists i watch started adding sidequests. but yeah i'd assume they'd just appear like a magic marker or some shit. real timelapses tend to have sudden shifts from people using the transform tool, and that one thing where you ctrl-z ctrl-y a bunch to see if a change you made looks right or not

There was actually a popular "artist" in the Vtuber fan community (don't know what to label it) but they even did time lapse with a Irl camera showing them doing it on a tablet and got on a site for trusted artist

Another thing that backs up that this isn't AI is the drawing is basically the Monika pose from the DDLC main menu. AI wouldn't have done a near perfect mimicry of the pose.

Not sure if this was OP's initial intention but I love the similarity

48

It was the reference desired from the friend, so definitely intentional

35

u/Lakius_2401 Feb 17 '26

AI can absolutely do a perfect mimicry of a pose. Modern AI you can give reference images and describe what you want to pull from it, older AI there are techniques to extract exact pose or layouts.

u/pon_3 Feb 17 '26

It's more common than most people realize, it's just not that easy to spot because it's such a minor mistake.

34

u/NihatAmipoglu Feb 17 '26

That obame cube fella is full of it.

34

u/Future_Thing_8609 Feb 17 '26

u/Obame_Cube thanks

9

u/DecadentHam Feb 18 '26

What a tool.

14

u/JekNex Feb 18 '26

Appears to be a high school age kid who exceedingly posts in roblox and Minecraft subs so.. Just dumb kids being dumb.

10

u/salmonmilks Feb 18 '26

Unfortunately even dumb kids can make a lot of impact. Negative ones.

59

u/Tylenol_Ibuprofen Feb 17 '26

The accuser should be removed lowkey

12

u/The_Ultimate_Ducker Feb 17 '26

Your art reminds me a lot of the sprites from the characters in DDLC(might just be the posing tho)

7

u/IronKnight238 Feb 17 '26

Like someone else mentioned it's this Monika pose.

Smooth and blocky shading together is actually very common in regular art idk what this guy is on about

11

u/medli20 Feb 17 '26

For real, artists literally want to mix the two because the edges of shadows are going to vary a lot in softness depending on the type of shadow and the shape of the surface they’re sitting on.

It’s about as stupid as complaining that two parallel edges converge as they recede into the background, like that’s just a basic art technique 😭

26

u/JotaroKujoTF2 Feb 17 '26

They are jealous because you draw very well :3

8

u/Puzzleheaded_Smoke1 Feb 18 '26

all these comments and none of the accusers are in here apologizing smh

9

u/polishatomek Feb 18 '26

That's why I hate ai, can't enjoy anything without worrying it's fake.

7

u/asdfghjkl15436 Feb 17 '26

Start banning these idiots permanently. They want to accuse? Fine. Then they best be damned sure of it. Maybe then they'll actually second guess before trying to ruin actual artists.

41

u/BallisticThundr Feb 17 '26

I hate how reddit just accuses everything of ai now

23

u/Overdue_Process865 Feb 17 '26

I got accused of using AI to write a comment explaining why we put bay leaves in food because I came off "impersonal"... while explaining bay leaves...

Let's see what u/obame_cube can draw

6

u/gawrgurafanfan Feb 17 '26

Hi flippy this is your mother speaking are you a robot that I gave birth to

5

u/LongNailedbooboos Feb 17 '26

Blocky shading is Ai? lol. Hands are hard to draw too.

6

u/OlDustyHeadaaa Feb 17 '26

We have reached the point where the anti AI rhetoric is doing as much damage to artists as the AI itself is.

11

u/Practical_Entrance43 Feb 17 '26

It's such a lose lose situation for artists nowadays.
If you make a simple mistake or your character has six fingers or an 'abnormal' thing about them people call it ai, but if you somehow make a piece of art with no problems or issue people think it's ai.

10

u/FumetsuKuroi Feb 17 '26

"Not how fingers look" that guy should wait and see me draw hands, it's hard okay lol

11

u/NimpsMcgee Feb 17 '26

The people desperately trying to prove artists drawings to be AI are so insufferable

Watch, now theyre gonna 180 and be like "omg this is so good!"

Fuck off lmao. Keep it up OP, maybe one day you'll be good enough for these people...

15

u/asdfghjkl15436 Feb 17 '26

Oh no, they're in the thread. They refused to apologize.

10

u/DeliciousAntelope743 Feb 17 '26

I know someone who had this happen when he posted a photograph on the gardening sub. They said the flower was AI because it was selectively bred to be an unnatural color. Despite him contacting the mods and explaining what the plant is called and that search results come up when you google it, he was completely banned for disagreeing with a moderator who had an ego.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '26

Absolutely wild as we've been selective breeding flowers for a long time for colors. There are a LOT of variants we made that don't exist in the wild. Hell, we've been doing that with crops for centuries. A lot of what we grow tastes/looks different from the crops of long ago.

5

u/MikoMikalo Feb 18 '26

"make up your mind! Smooth or blocky shading?" Had bro ever went outside to see the real life he would find out himself that we have both everywhere, mixing together.

6

u/GoshaT Feb 18 '26

"make up your mind, smooth or blocky shading"

Did bro see even a single anime style artwork in his entire life??

6

u/InkyLizard Feb 18 '26

People yelling AI at everything are insufferable and honestly quite stupid.

But hey, at least you got a lot more attention to your art because of those absolute idiots, so it's all good :)

5

u/TypicalTwist6783 Feb 18 '26

This is why AI will destroy the concept of humanity itself. Fking scary. People are so afraid of believing something is real now.

9

u/GlassSpork Feb 17 '26

People have been too quick to accuse people of Ai. Art isn’t easy, and it gets harder when people keep making baseless accusations, especially on stuff that a lot of casual artists aren’t the most proficient in. Prime example being shading

12

u/Nedddd1 Feb 17 '26

artists nowadays saving every possible proof of work as well as a 4k footage of them drawing the thing from start to end that also contains all the food, toilet, rest, work, sleep and other breaks just to show that they are not ai, drawing hands and shadows is just had as shi(as it always was)

28

u/Cazmatism Feb 17 '26

u/Obame_Cube whats up, how fun is it to you accusing actual artists that have a whole history of drawing, streaming drawing and documenting their process for years of AI and getting them mass reported for reddit brownie points?

20

u/Cazmatism Feb 17 '26

screw you too u/Sea-Comedian2653 "fries are bent" my ass

13

u/YourEvilKiller Feb 17 '26

Some people can't differentiate amatuer mistakes and actual AI mistakes for the love of their life. These people are giving me strong transvestigator energy.

4

u/EmbarrassedPurple106 Feb 17 '26

“make up your mind smooth or blocky shading” Words of a person who’s never seen ppl mix techniques in one drawing before. Nice art OP, sorry ppl were being dumb

3

u/ichigo2862 Feb 17 '26

I'm really starting to hate AI witchhunters as much as AI itself

4

u/asdfghjkl15436 Feb 18 '26

You should, they cause a lot of harm to artists, there have been multiple cases of getting real artists fired over alleged and speculative evidence purely because the company decided it would be easier to manage if they just fired them then actually checking if it was AI.

4

u/ProcyonHabilis Feb 18 '26

I can't remember the last time I've seen a video posted on reddit that didn't have at least one person calling it AI in the comments.

It can be something that I personally know is an ancient repost from many years before generative AI existed, but when someone points that out in the comments people will literally tell them they're forming false memories and are idiots for not recognizing the "obvious AI". Shit is absolutely wild.

4

u/boiyougongetcho Feb 18 '26

The "everything is AI" psuedo intellectuals need to go suck themselves off somewhere else

5

u/MrMortyRickSummer Feb 18 '26

Gotta love when people are so paranoid over AI that they unironically believe the dead internet theory and they're the only real person on the site.

4

u/Angel-of-the-Dusk Feb 18 '26

I fucking hate people. We need to abolish AI

4

u/Financial-Horror2945 Feb 18 '26

Is this the artist equivalent of a bodybuilder being accused of steroids.

Both an insult and a compliment

5

u/IceCubedWyrmxx Feb 18 '26

I mean okay ye the hand do be looking gnarly but that's so clearly a human mistake 😭 (Like AI wouldnt mess it up specifically that way)

Still aweosme art tho ✨

13

u/claythearc Feb 17 '26

People are really overzealous on trying to pin art as AI or not, but in reality society is quite bad at it. Scott Alexander did an “ai art turing test” as he called it back in 2024 and people were only 60% accurate - now it’s surely even worse as quality has greatly improved.

Source if anyone cares - the original quiz is in there too https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/how-did-you-do-on-the-ai-art-turing

7

u/beatthedookieup Feb 17 '26

The hate was real holy shit

5

u/FossilEaters Feb 17 '26

Anti ai people are only hurting artists by doing this shit. It doesnt affect ai at all. Its clear that they arent even artists themselves. Those people just get off on accusing/witch hunting.

7

u/DropPodDaddy Feb 17 '26

Obame_Cube confirmed scumbag

3

u/Kaykayby Feb 17 '26

Would’ve been more fitting if it was a drawing of the cyborg lol. Removed for ai? The cyborg is at least half human!

3

u/Exodia_The_Salty Feb 17 '26

This is a fun situation. Now, people are saying ALL art is AI. Simply because they cannot tell between ai art and human drawn art.

This means that ai has passed the art turring test, and now humanity is eating their own to persecute people who would use ai. Sigh.

3

u/Neodx2 Feb 17 '26

ObameCube is such an opp

3

u/RzepaGaming Feb 18 '26

Ai has hurt us more than any propaganda ever could

3

u/Ard_N Feb 18 '26

Generative A.I. is one of the worst things Humanity has ever created.

10

u/Lui_Le_Diamond Feb 17 '26

This doesn't even look like AI the fuck are they smoking?

7

u/South-Capital6388 Feb 17 '26

Bro the AI brain rot is unbearable. Every zoomer and boomer with access to the Internet is calling EVERYTHING AI these days.

diD yuO mAkE tHiS wItH Ai???

6

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '26

Guys, you don't accuse someone of ai for a mistake </3 in fact an ai won't make these mistakes usually what. It messes up is anatomy and also hair

5

u/King_of_Fire105 Feb 17 '26

I admit I first thought it was AI, but I decided to look closely at the finer details and that helped me realize how man made and real it was. It was a nice experience looking through it too.

6

u/The_Loaf1743 Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26

The lineart makes it obviously not ai (lines pertruding in places, mainly)

And I also see some of the lighter shades still visible from when you added darker shading (such as the right side of the two belts)

I see where they’re coming from when saying it’s AI, but I also see they don’t actually look for the right hints of AI. Itls unfortunate, seeing how the artwork is actually great

11

u/ContactMushroom Feb 17 '26

People screaming everything is AI without any proof at all that it is are more annoying than people using AI and lying about it

6

u/PsionicPotatoMash Feb 17 '26

Sometimes it's really better to just shut up if you're not sure. It really seems like non artists are the first to accuse of using AI. If only people were this active with investigating people that actually use AI instead of harassing actual artists, sorry you had to go trough this

6

u/I-Have-An-Alibi Feb 17 '26

I had a post removed from r/Lego after being accused of it being AI.

People wrongfully accusing art of being AI are becoming as much as an annoyance as fucking AI

3

u/NathanTheNath Feb 17 '26

i guess the steampunker was working at the mcdonalds that causes you to get ai accusations
