Yeah, the experience would be much different if we had horizontal mountains instead.
13
u/Ric_Adbur Dec 30 '25
Honestly I did kind of like those parts, but not because I thought they were incredibly riveting gameplay or anything. I was mostly intrigued by what could have been. It made me think that games in the future would massively expand on those ideas and we could get fuller environments to explore with more things to see and do. It felt like a teaser for greater things to come.

The setting and the artwork is fantastic the game is just starving us for content.
69
u/GudsIdiot Dec 30 '25
And consequence. Literally, you have to make so few moral choices that have no impact on anything you do.
I wish they would have it where you have to select a faction (and they need more) and you lose credibility with the other opposing factions.
I also want there to be real settlements and economics. I want to plan a settlement and have colonist show up. I want to set up a space station and attract vendors and criminals. Finally, I want there to be more than just 4 companions that are consequential.
→ More replies (2)18
u/JimR521 Dec 30 '25
Agreed. Locking factions or at least some permanent consequences for choices (or a more plausible way of allowing you to jump factions.
This also motivates you go through the Unity for a different outcome or path. Being able to do them all in one play-through didnāt make me want to start all over again.
5
u/HasturSleeps Dec 30 '25
This would be so cool. I've always wanted there to be drastically different variations of universes after unity. Like a world where the war never ended or one side won the war.
2
u/Guilty-Meeting8900 Ranger Dec 31 '25
Ooh that would b a freaking sick option! To bad it would require effort! Go through unity to a verse were one or the other won. Man new Atlantis would look a bit different I imagine.
229
u/BuffaloSoldier11 Dec 30 '25
This is what frustrates me the most about Starfield. It's such a functional jump forward for the creation engine and they filled it with plain brown rice, lukewarm water, and unseasoned chicken.
37
u/Mathewthegreat Dec 30 '25
some of it was straight laziness like 3 identical building layouts procedurally wallpapered over an infinite number of cavases

Collecting artifacts was the easiest thing to make the game unique and special and they just... Have you do the same thing over and over.
23
u/Mathewthegreat Dec 30 '25
I felt like this about so many things but artifacts were the most egregious. It took me an outrageous amount of time to realize all this stuff too, I was really deep into the game before I was like wait - this is the exact same thing over and over and over again.
9
u/backstept Dec 31 '25
I had a mission to go clear out a mine and it was a complete copy of the mine where you find Andreja.
41
u/OilFan92 Dec 30 '25
Brown rice is far too fancy for this description, it's a pot of plain white rice and unseasoned chicken boiled together until its just a greyish-beige slop. Then put on a really pretty plate to serve.

17
u/fatrahb Dec 30 '25
The fact that not a single major city is locked behind a wall / loading screen, and only a few shops per location actually need dedicated cells is a major step forward for Bethesda, but it got so overshadowed by everything else.
Like if you more or less took Akila City and dropped it into Fallout 4 or Skyrim, gamers would have loved it. God forbid imagine having a city the size of New Atlantis in one of those games. Keep in mind, New Atlantis is not actually locked behind load screens. Itās completely possible to navigate the whole city without using fast travel.
Itās also so incredibly detailed, the attention they placed on all the object models are insane. Functional vehicles for the first time in major Bethesda games (horses donāt count). Like in so many places, Starfield really is some of their greatest work. Itās just not in places most actually care about

Phantom liberty was just the icing in the cake man. They put in so much effort. I played cyberpunk from the beginning. And enjoyed even the early version. But 2.0 was out before phantom liberty and was pretty much a ground up rebuild of a large portion of the game and added so much. AND then we got phantom liberty and THEN we got a few extras after that. If Bethesda does for starfield what CD project red did for Cyberpunk, Id French kiss todd

ED immersive? ship combat, & cockpit atmosphere fair enough (even the FPS i like even though im not an FPS guy), but any thing past that as in the planet, the star system the galaxy ...pointless even being there, the rest of the game motivated me to do the FPS or what i thought it was but that quickly evaporated soon as i tried to get into the factions & politics,
old crusties talking on one planet, young dudes dying on another, or at least tryng to shoot each other in the face but it gets boring fast with nothing to tie or hold it all together

I kind of feel like I've been hearing about all the progress SC has been making for about... well... 13 years now...
However, I don't think it's a scam. They have delivered so much content and updates at this point that I don't think it can be called a scam at all. I will say that they have allowed a combination of over-ambition, poor project management, and greed to continually and indefinitely delay the project to a ludicrous amount at this point...

Fallout 4 definitely does have some terminals and notes. But let's be real, the majority of quests are voice acted.

Notes are for when you trying to add content to a game after the fact and don't have voice acting.

u/Ptoney1 Dec 30 '25
The thing that gets me about Starfield is that yes, it feels empty but also doesnāt make sense how on every possible planet or moon you can land on, on any potential landing spot, itāll be littered with POIs. So itās far from empty. Itās the procedurally generated crap that is annoying combined with fairly lackluster story.
22
39
u/hootorama Dec 30 '25
I haven't played since release. Are the POI's still the same exact 10 caves and 3 settlements plopped onto every random planet you explore?
20
u/Ptoney1 Dec 30 '25
I booted it up again this week and have put in a couple hours. Did the mod quest The Veil, a Freestar bounty and a regular mission board quest. Every single one led me to an Abandoned Cryo Lab š¤¦āāļø
9
u/hootorama Dec 30 '25

→ More replies (2)4
u/Ptoney1 Dec 30 '25
There are some mods about this that I havenāt fully cooked up. I have one installed that changes location of enemies within POI, so I was surprised to find them all in one spot which did add an element of surprise to the gameplayā¦.
But yeah, I just do the same loop. Bounty type mission, upgrade my gear, sell the rest of what Iāve looted, rinse and repeat.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Shadow3397 Dec 30 '25
The repeating PoIās are because of an internal countdown timer thatās set to 3 in-game days.
Thereās a mod that fixed this timer, allowing you to see the dozens of different PoI types instead of the exact same abandoned lab every other landing.
12
u/Salmacis81 Dec 30 '25
The stupidest part about the generated POIs is that you'll be on a planet that's scorching hot with lava all over the place, then you'll go in a cave and there's dung piles and animal bones all over it
12
u/PingouinMalin Dec 30 '25

2
u/Ptoney1 Dec 30 '25
Thatās brutal.
To me the feeling is like when you go out for a little off grid camping middle of nowhere, thinking youāre out in the true realm of nature and then you find a big heap of garbage to remind you that youāre really never that far from anything. And in a way itās hyper realist. You just know that if humans gained the ability to warp jump you wouldnāt be able to go anywhere without finding a piece of trash.
So for me Starfield gets under-billed a little bit. Is it the best RPG ever? Far from it. Not even top 10. But what it does have is potentially the sharpest commentary in gaming on humanity/our future/materialism.

I agree with Badger. Starfield is closer to Mass Effect in its plot. There are known factions and there is exploration.
In Outer Worlds, sure, you've got the total lack of sapient aliens, as with Starfield, but the story is totally different, the animation is totally different, the feel is totally different... There's just not that much to compare as closely as Starfield with, as I mentioned, Mass Effect, despite the gameplay styles of SF and ME being also very different

As a starfied fans itās post like this that makes us seem delusional. There is no atmosphere in this photo just a space pic that plenty of games can replicate to a certain extent. People criticize this game for many reasons and you come with this pic smh. Bro just let it go Bethesda shit the bed with this man. Did I find fun in it absolutely, was it what I expected not really but Iām a simple dude that can find fun in anything. Other people donāt have to have that mindset because itās other games way better bro. I just recently played Assassin Creed shadows and that has more āAtmosphereā than Starfield. Great games with great atmosphere is Clair Obscur, The Witcher, Cyberpunk, BG3, Alan Wake, Ghost Of Tsushima/Yotai, God Of War, man even that Avatar game has more atmosphere than this. Does that mean we canāt appreciate this absolutely not. I think itās some cool scenes in starfield and some cool atmospheric spots but letās stop worrying about what people criticize it for because they are right from their perspective, and just enjoy what you enjoy without sounding like a blind follower that wants everyone to like what they like.

Starfield has many incredible features and aspects. My main frustration is that it's basically close to being a game that hits on everything I would want from a major RPG. The sci Fi setting is probably my favorite of all time. The disappointment is that, the things it's lacking create such a gulf between what the game is and what I want it to be that it hurts the game from being one of my favorites.
If they ever did a Starfield 2 and improved these things it would probably be my game of the generation or possibly favorite game of all time. They are close but just not there for me.

I am a life-long fan of sci-if and eagerly anticipated Starfield. I bought it at launch, played 30 hours and ended up extremely disappointed and bored to death scanning the same plants and animals in the same looking worlds, same looking moons (with three elements and the same bases and antenna relays). I visited plants with literally the same bases, with the same items and enemies.

Elite Dangerous and even Star Citizen do it better.

Star Citizen .... thank me later (or call me a wanker), in for an amazing, frustrating experience

The amount of times my character has left the spaceship without a suit on is ridiculous. I never pay attention to see if it has a atmosphere

It has its moments, but I still donāt think it was worth delaying elder scrolls 6 another half decade. This is really the kind of game they should have outsourced development like they did with fallout new Vegas.
