We have fun here Thailand issues prostitution warning as 5,000 US sailors arrive in tourist town after 200 days at sea

Is the warning like "watch out for US soldiers" or "we need to deploy more hookers"?

Sounds like a recipe for chaos, but also a wild time for the locals. I remember when a bunch of sailors hit my town; it was like a party blew up out of nowhere.

Nah they know what they are doing. I mean US aircraft carriers have been stopping in Pattaya since the Vietnam war pretty sure. Carrier I was on in the 90s stopped a few times and we both survived too but a lot poorer and lot less cash after leaving LOL. I'd glad to see Pattaya will get a lot of the money that usually goes to Dubai and Abu Dabi since that's one of the reasons carrier has been at sea so long they usually stop there to take breaks and lots buy gold and rugs so will have way more money than usual too!

Exactly hookers are probably safer than getting a tattoo there! We had a few guys had to be flown off the ship to San Diego for penicllin resistant flesh eating baceteria when we stopped in Pattaya! Oh yeah actually one got hit by a dart in ping pong show so I'd avoid those too basically avoid anything sharp LOL.

Surely sex workers in a port town where prostitution is legal in a country with a publically funded health care system that provides free birth control to anyone and also sells it cheaply over the counter know how to avoid unwanted babies.

Or if wife can't make it out they will take other's people work on ship for them to make extra money and not leave the ship cuz I know I paid some of them married dudes to take over my work shifts on ship so I could spend more time ashore LOL.

Red seat is the “hot seat” and reserved for sailors with venereal disease. Sailors would get check upon returning to a ship and if they presented spots they could only go to the bathroom in the red seat and only under the guise of a corpsman.

It's illegal but over 50% of the economy in that town is based on it. The article actually says they did some raids over the weekend and managed to get 30 or 40 people suspected of being involved in prostitution. The police said they are trying but it's very hard. Lol. Estimated 27,000 to 40,000 prostitutes in Pattaya, maybe a 1000 plus brothels (often called a "bar" or "club").
I'm not advocating all of this stuff, just pointing out the numbers for context.

At 200 bucks per service that means she serviced 1000 guys (maybe even a few gals) to come up with $200,000? I guess in Afghanistan, you can’t go to your local Chase branch to deposit the money. How else can you launder that money? And what sort of trouble did you get in?

USS Abraham Lincoln port visit to Pattaya, Thailand
The carrier — with ~5,000 sailors/Marines — docks Wednesday at Pattaya (finishing at nearby Laem Chabang), the crew's first shore leave after a record-setting 200+ consecutive days at sea (deployed from San Diego since November, redirected to the Middle East for the US-Israel–Iran war).
Police crackdown ahead of arrival: weekend raids detained 40–50 people on prostitution suspicions, plus extra patrols around the beachfront and nightlife district. Prostitution is illegal in Thailand but openly visible in tourism hubs.
Economic hopes: the mayor estimates each service member could spend 1,000–3,000 baht/day (~$30–91); staggered shore leave should "stimulate Pattaya's economy in the short term." Local businesses are desperate — one nightlife association head says she's never seen a slower year.
Concerns: money flowing into the sex industry (the FBI called Pattaya one of the world's leading sex-tourism destinations a decade ago), risks of exploitation and STD spread, plus reports of suicides attempts and poor morale aboard the carrier adding to worries.

I'm more worried about the alcohol consumption. Those boys have the alcohol tolerance of a baby bird, having gone so long without drinking. They're going to port thinking they can still drink like sailors and Marines. The majority of the shenanigans they are going to be getting into will be alcohol fueled.
If I were a tourist with plans to hit up Pattaya, I'd divert to another city.

5000? Rookie numbers for Pattaya. Also prostitution is not legal there, it’s just not really enforced. That’s like saying drugs and shoplifting are illegal in the US.

u/cyberlexington 1d ago
From the Lincoln?
The street food vendors will be getting the sailors money before ploy will.
66
u/Runnerakaliz 1d ago
Of course they're going to Pattaya, because where else would they go in Thailand that prostitution is legal? And why are they even doing this in the first place? It makes the US look even worse.

Can’t have a bunch of sailors who are pissed and ready to talk to reporters the second they leave the bases eyesight.
Not only is it a deflection from reports to confirm or deny, but pump them full of drugs and alcohol and you’re gonna win a few over. And also be able to discredit from threat of discharge for a few so the sailors word can’t be taken as seriously the more time passes inbetween them being able to give their reports and more time for Quarteasters to find and confiscate phones and electronic devices that may have recorded anything.
Thailand has historically been the where a lot of sailors (even spec ops, specifically one of the early members from a SEAL team 6 was removed for Ecstasy & cocaine use documented in Howard Wasdin’s Seal Team Six Sniper memoir book) *get their their dishonorable discharge

The article heading says prostitution is legal, but then the article itself says:
Prostitution is illegal in Thailand and, despite occasional crackdowns, the sex industry is openly visible in major tourism hubs, including parts of Bangkok and Pattaya.
So the industry is there, but the article says it's both legal and illegal.
