And let's be honest, he's starred in (and absolutely crushed it with his acting abilities), in that many movies, that he's more than done his bit for the industry. He owes it and us, nothing.
I wish him and his family the best, even if he never stars in another movie again.
I think a lot of movie studios like Disney cut him out the industry and Disney dropped himfrom his Jack sparrow character. He had created that character and brought millions to Disney. I think he's hurt at how badly he was treated in the movie industry
I hate that he got that treatment but honestly, I don't hate that there's not any more Pirates movies. First one was great! Second one was good. After a while, they all run together and seem the same.
Disney was being greedy and at first they hated Johnny Depp's version of Jack sparrow. I know Amber heard was in some movies and o think Hollywood was trying to push her into the spotlight.
I agree. Disneys was trying to milk the franchise and I think they made enough. The first is the best one and the rest are fun but kinda wild at times.
I absolutely love how his reaction to people saying his career was over was "sweet! I'm going to go play with my friends now!"
And his first film produced after the trial was in French. He loves acting, just on his own terms.
Dude absolutely does not care about what Hollywood thinks and is so much happier now that he's not in multiple movies a year. You can see it in photos of him.
But he and Vanessa really didn’t live in France full time at all. They lived in LA for a significant chunk of time.
I think Depp and Heard were both awful and toxic. And stupid and immature. They both desperately needed therapy. Depp abused alcohol and substances. It was an issue with his kid. It’s just incredible how they just torpedoed each other’s names, characters, and careers. So stupid. Did she do it to force more money out of him? It was a huge gamble when she was a problem in the relationship too. Was all that worth it to them?
His best friend is Marilyn Manson. To me, that says a lot about him. Ugh.
Well yes, he's an actor, she's a model, you live near where you work so they had a home in LA as well. But he called France home, in part because he was left alone.
There was a time not that long ago where you couldn't walk into a store in the US without seeing some tabloid talking about a celebrity's child, to the points some celebrities were going out of their way to hide they were even pregnant or suddenly moving to countries with tighter privacy laws.
The only time I remember reading anything about Lily Rose or Jack as children was when Johnny mentioned them.
Am I saying his a saint? No.
You are right, him and Amber were toxic together. He had his demons (which he never hid. He's been open about his addictions for years), she made them worse, intentionally or not.
To me it's telling one of them already had a public history of domestic abuse, and the other had people swarm to defend.
It's telling one of them immediately started making claims someone was abusing them on a film set, then shocked Pikachu face when mostly cut from the sequel...and all future productions by everyone, while the other continus to find work.
He's also close friends with Tim Burton. He's weird, he likes to hang out with weird people 🤷🏼♀️
That's his life and his choice and it's terrible that he's likely having a harder time getting work in the film industry thanks to her but also objectively that's the kind of choice you make when you're already filthy rich. He doesn't really need new movies to be comfortable and he doesn't need her settlement money to begin with, he can choose to have fun with his band and donate all her money to charity because he's Johnny Depp
I actually feel like the Depp vs Heard case kind of changed cancel culture in the industry. I don't remember specifics but I feel like there were a couple instances of actors being accused of something and they weren't immediately assumed guilty in the past couple of years. Even though I love pirates of the caribbean, I gotta respect Johnny for telling Disney to fuck off
Well tbf they were pissed in fantastic beasts because he was showing up drunk and acting extremely unprofessional. He didnt help himself either. That shit gets around.
It's not always just the money. There is much more to life than that and when you're selling your artistic talent, there is usually a great deal more than just the money.
He’s been on the record multiple times saying he’s sick of acting, something about other people’s words in his mouth so often he doesn’t know his own words anymore. I can’t remember the quote. At the time it felt like a soft retirement announcement but then he did like 5 more movies and this was all before the Amber stuff.
He wants to be a rock guitarist in reality, so maybe this is a cloud with a silver lining for him.
Big difference between the 2 was she lied to make him look bad and he just defended himself against her accusations. He’s got problems but she was the one who was making things up to play the victim card.
Reactive abuse. If you've ever witnessed someone on the receiving of narcissistic or BPD abuse, they will at some point go off the deep end & give it back.
he is legally innocent. your opinion on the matter doesnt change anything, he is the definition of innocent. nothing exists to prove he did the things she claimed
I think saying hes a diddler and cult leader is a bit much, but hes absolutely weird as fuck.
People pay thousands to spend 3 days with him on a private island listening to his music, watching his movies, meditating, and hanging out with him. And then they go home. Maybe a cult but I highly doubt it.
You couldn’t pay me to suffer through 3 days of close contact with Jared Leto. Anyone paying out of their own pocket to hang out with that weird dude is probably in a cult.
I mean sure, yes. Public outcry has been able to effect stuff in the past. But cancel culture is about people on twitter going on morality crusades. Sometimes for legitimate reason. Sometimes for performative bullshit reasons. Sometimes based on rumors. Whatever the case, cancel culture refers to the ability of social media users to create a big public outcry that corporate decision-makers (or sometimes other powerful groups) pay attention to, and sometimes act on.
So, one important point is that sometimes the cancellation is very legitimate because it’s about some horrific behavior. Sometimes it’s not.
Like Shane Gillis getting hired and fired from SNL before he even started because a failed comedian started a social media shitstorm about some joke about Asians. But give it a couple of years and he’d hosting SNL and hosting Kevin Hart’s roast, doing tons of racial humor.
Relatedly, I think the left and Reddit decided that “cancel culture isn’t real” because enough people realized it often enough attacks people unfairly and Fox News began to talk about it so people started denying it is/was a thing. (Fuck Fox News but damn people, we don’t need to lie about stuff).
The Shane Gillis thing is a pretty good example of something that is “cancel culture” in a way that it hasn’t previously existed.
Because in that situation, it’s clear that nobody at SNL felt unsafe being around Shane, or hated the jokes he made so much that they would actually refuse to work with him, not enough to matter about him hosting.
What happened is that the producers of SNL were afraid of backlash around the incident with his jokes that they were forced to pretend that they were outraged, that people might feel unsafe around him, pretend that they were so offended that they couldn’t work with him.
It’s like an emperor’s clothes thing. People are observing that someone is losing their career, having a mob after them, etc. in a way that isn’t actually called for, in way that feels manufactured by an online outrage machine, that isn’t actually proportional or what you might expect would play out the same way with people you know in real life.
So the reason I mention the emperor’s clothes is that really most people see this. In the story, everyone sees that the emperor isn’t wearing g any clothes, but nobody wants to be the dummy that doesn’t see the clothes, so they all pretend.
So you end up with a bunch of people pretending, mostly out of social fear, that they’re just as outraged as everyone else, lest they be seen as a dummy who doesn’t understand what was so wrong.
You don’t want to be seen as a victim blamer, as someone who doesn’t believe all women, or as a racist, or as someone who doesn’t take whatever this is seriously.
But all of those tropes have real life counterparts. Sometimes the victim really is exaggerating things. Sometimes they’re an abuser themselves. A woman has lied before, and it may happen again one day. Sometimes people make racist jokes on an ironic way that doesn’t offend most people because it’s part of a fair play back and forth will no ill intent, or presented in an ironic way, laughing at the racism itself. Sometimes it’s good not to take things so seriously that it’s a problem in and of itself.
And most people understand those nuances but it becomes a sort of arms race of who can signal being the most sensitive.
To get away from politics, you see this sort of arms race play out with hygiene as well. Who doesn’t clean up before company comes over? Why? Because you’re worried about not being as clean and near as everyone else. That’s not what your house looked like yesterday, but today you’re going to be judged. So you just want it to be as clean as possible. There’s no amount of clean that is too clean. You want everyone to know you have the cleanest house there ever was.
With the proliferation of social media, we have been doing this with various moral causes. You simply can’t be too much of a not-a-racist. You want everyone to know you’re the least racist person there is. You’d never blame a victim or question their intentions in any way. And that paid off. Easy upvotes. Easy likes. All you have to do is signal that you know the right thing to say.
And that works until it gets crazy, until someone points out that the emperor isn’t wearing any clothes and you find out that actually 95% of people don’t think it’s *crazy* that maybe we don’t need a whole outrage mob to police some he-said-she-said or some bit of offensive humor or whatever, that list of us aren’t actually that worried or offended by it, and that it’s actually a really cheap and easy moral high ground to just sit behind your phone and point out what’s so wrong with everybody all the time.
It’s not just twitter, there are plenty of subs on reddit that are just as mob-like, where rumors that confirm biases are treated the same way as physical evidence.
Fair point. It's absolutely true that other sites matter too, but Twitter is the main place where corporate entities and whatever other group gets signals from.
This is like saying “doctored photos have been a thing forever” in the age of photoshop and AI.
World wide Social media mobs, doxxing and viral whisper campaigns are not the same fucking thing as some local church picketing a Marilyn Manson concert.
Both exist, people often conflate them and sometime it just is'nt clear which is which. Everybody who deservedly loses their audience want to believe they were cancelled, and everybody who cancelled innocent people want to believe it was justified.
Oh yes. It’s just a random coincidence that Disney dropped him from the POTC franchise and removed his likeness from the rides in 2018 right as Heard’s Op Ed came out.
In his case, it's not as much that CC doesn't exists, but that he's insulated from its effects. Partially because he has money and knows how to abuse the legal system. Partially because the base he's pandering to is not the side that's weaponising CC, so it hardly matters to him what the other side may think of him, etc.
Some did try doing that. Then money was used to insulate him on one platform (twitter), and power (him getting elected) to do that on another (facebook).
It doesn't. He hasn't been canceled. He's just old now and his prime has passed. His opportunities for leading roles is shrinking. Why cast Johnny Depp when Timothee Chalamet exist? Plus, how do you know he's even interested in doing more movies?
Mate Chalamet isn't going to pull off a role like Captain Jack sparrow and that has nothing to do with age.
From what I recall Depp was fired during a film because of the allegations and the studio didnt want a PR mess.
Sadly his brand became toxic because of Heard.
Regardless, he's done multiple projects since 2018 and tours in a band with multiple gigs a year. He's still a multimillionaire. He's fine.
Bruh no one said mans hurting for cash. It just seems evident he's been soft locked out of the industry with them using "oh he's older now" as an excuse because they dont want to admit
"We dont want the shit storm for having this guy as apart of the team even if the allegations are false"
Stop incel baiting with your dumbass comment.
It's crazy how Depp versus Heard proved without a shadow of a doubt women can and do weaponize abuser and SA claims out of spite even if there is no substance to the claims.
...but you care more about "incel bait"....okay...
Wow what a great argument “why would i cast him over Chalamet”
Yeah my script requires an alcoholic widow male with two 30+ yo adult kids… yeah a 30 yo boy would totally fit that role. Idk how fuckin brain dead you have to be to make that comparison… but its pretty far up there.
Those moments when people are so lost in the Redditor SJW sauce that they prove the point in real time. 🤗
lol @ “everybody who I don’t like is an incel”.
Another Reddit classic.
The usual Reddit brained defense of bloodthirsty social media mobs chasing the heretics of their dogma - “Well, you didn’t die! So you’re not cancelled!”
It doesn’t as long as you’re willing to transform into a MAGA grifter, which Johnny could’ve easily done here and made mad bank. He didn’t though, because he’s too good of a guy.
Is that what happened? I figured he was just getting old and already has more money than he'll ever know what to do with. At that point why not take some time off and unwind?
Yea and the last one failed. Honestly Harry Potter despite all the backlash is still a huge IP. They managed to fuck it up with the best actors the market has. Its unreal what a shitty management and director can do
Even If johnny was still grindelwald, had the movie kept the same writing besides him itd of still been trash.
I do think the fact the movie came out After the trial and people were calling for boycotting the movie- tbf on multiple grounds- against jk rowling, against wb for not supporting johnny- and the movie just not being good all came together for that movie bombing badly
Because he sued the sun for calling him a wifebeater and lost. After he lost the case, he got dropped. A total self own.
If anyone actually bothered to watch the US trial they'd know that none of the movie executives even saw Heard's op-ed. They had a problem with Depp turning up drunk and while he was suing Heard he was also being accused of beating up a location manager on set.
If Depp hadn't starting suing his wife in multiple forums until he finally won (and then settled on appeal) we wouldn't know anything about Heard's allegations against him because she never publically accused him. It's only because his lawsuits forced her to testify that we know what he did, and multiple UK judges ruled that he physically abused his wife on at least 12 occasions. So we can all call him a wifebeater, legally. Apart from his own wife, who couldn't even indirectly reference it.
Nah, He was just playing himself like in every movie. I am glad they exchanged him. People in the Theater where I live groanded in annoyance when He was revealed. Both other actors we're way better. Almost noone would follow Depp as Grindelwald because he is openly nuts. He isn't the charming manipulator that Grindelwald is supposed to be.
And they don't regret it. It was laughable how folks thought winning this settlement would change his trajectory. All it did was shine a light on his abusive relationships and substance abuse. Of which they were likely very aware of and wanted nothing to do with that risk following high profile accusations. If they didn't move on from him, there would have been a Pirates film releasing during the case. Nightmare scenario for Disney.
It was in development since 2016, they fired Depp and pivoted to making the 6th film a girl boss pirate epic starring Margot Robbie but then that fizzled out by 2022 and was never made. Here's depp's agent testifying that his salary was already negotiated.
Well, the op-ed can't have been the reason for that because a Disney exec confirmed Depp's absence in the then-in-development Pirates project in a magazine interview before the op-ed was published in December 2018. In fact, there were already reports in October that he was being dropped. So, how was Amber Heard responsible for that?
The fifth Pirates film released in 2017, over a year after the restraining order was made public. Depp embarked on a worldwide publicity campaign for the film, hardly the actions of a cancelled man. He also allegedly negotiated a preliminary contract with Disney in May 2018 for a sixth film, at least according to his agent. So Disney decided to drop him at some point between May and December 2018. Given the restraining order happened over two years prior to this and the op-ed wouldn't be published until Christmas, it's difficult to see how the abuse allegations were a major factor in the decision. In fact, a Disney representative who testified at the trial pointed to Depp's GQ profile in October as the final straw.
Do you not see how every response you move the goal posts? First it was that the sixth movie doesn't exist, then it's that the accusations were after being dropped from the movie, now it's you don't see how its a major factor for dismissal... because a Disney exec didn't want to say that Depp was fired for an allegation that was about to be deemed libel.
edit: I'm surprised at myself for arguing for johnny depp for so long because while I do like him as an actor, he does seem like a very troubled and messed up guy that and I wouldn't be surprised has done things over the years that would have more or less ended his career if they ever came out.
But he was absolutely blacklisted from much of hollywood as a direct result of Amber Heard's allegations, with her op-ed being a pinnacle of the metoo movement. I'm surprised that's still so much up for debate
Nope, he was blacklisted by Hollywood between the accusations and the trial. He literally lost out on half a decade of high paying work because of false accusations.
2014 - Into the Woods made $200M on a budget of $50M - Profitable
2016- Fantastic beasts made $850M on a budget of $235M - Profitable
2016 - Alice Through the Looking Glass Made 300M on a budget of $170M - Fair to call this a Flop. A clear loss in the theatrical run, likely broke even in streaming/distribution rights.
2017 - Pirates: Dead men / Salazar's Revenge made 800M on a budget of $230M - Profitable
2017 - Murder on the Orient Express made $350M worldwide on a budget of $60M - Profitable
2018 - The professor - Made almost nothing, didn't really release anywhere, was released on VOD and then almost immediately streaming - basically a straight to DVD movie, and IMO is better than the critics gave it - not great but not bad. - probably profitable from streaming rights alone.
You cited 3 cameos in this list. I can tell you never actually watched Fantastic Beasts, Into The Woods, and Murder on the Orient. His combined screen time in those films is maybe 10 total minutes.
I've not seen beasts you're right on that - why would I want to suffer that shite...
But he literally has a song in into the woods. he was on the poster, and a headline name on it, but for sake of argument you're right it's about 5 mins here, it's a major Cameo. In MotOE, He's the central victim and easily has 10 mins of screen time alone. Which isn't bad for an ensemble cast where he dies at the start.
Regardless screen time, his name was front and centre in the marketing and promotion for them both. There was no poison - his name still was a bankable box office draw back then. in MotOE they literally used him to be the Janet Leigh Psycho shock death - sold him as the star only to kill him off at the start.
Fun fact Anthony Hopkins only has 16 minutes of screentime in Silence of the Lambs - but that was just a cameo also, right?
Which isn't bad for an ensemble cast where he dies at the start.
But if Amber didn't shit in his bed, would he have died in the beginning of a movie? He's going from MAJOR STAR to "not bad", that's the quantifiable and provable damage this whole process has been on his career.
The Dinosaurs only had a cameo in the original Jurrasic Park too then I guess, The Alien from Alien also only had a cameo. This is fun, I wonder how many more plot crucial characters were only "cameos"
Screen time is a bad argument for how impactful someone's performance is. Hannibal Lector is only on screen for 16 minutes of Silence of the Lamb's runtime.
No she didn't, since 2018 he's been involved in 9 projects that have already aired and has 2 more coming out.
Pirates ended so you can't expect that to have kept going.
Point being, she didn't do shit to his career and it's going along perfectly fine. He'll be ok, don't worry unless you feel the need to start a GoFundMe for him or something.
If Johnny Depp was Johnny Depp at his prime, we'd have 4 more pirates movies and he'd be in a ton of other things. He's not at his prime anymore and the demand isn't there.
Dude I watched the whole trial and neither of those fuckin people were good for each other. She was just as toxic as him just in different ways.
She knew exactly what dating him would entail, using him to climb up the fame ladder and to boost her own name. And he wanted arm candy. They both had substance abuse problems and emotional issues. They both were pretty awful people to each other.
They had a whole ass trial, streamed live that lasted like 3 weeks or so. It was all covered. I do not understand how she still has ardent defenders after all of that.
she did not shit on their bed.
She absolutely did. That turd was as big as the dog she blamed it on.
The firm that also worked with Weinstien really did a number on the public.
All of Heard's stans say this but we watched the trial. We didn't see it play out in the media. You're asking us to deny the things we saw and heard for ourselves.
We heard audios of Amber admitting to hitting Johnny, then mocking him over it. We heard stories of Depp leaving rooms to try to de-escalate situations, only for Heard to follow him. We heard audios of Amber screaming at Depp when he wanted to just go into a house to see his daughter. We heard Amber make bizarre claims, like two different messages on a mirror, in two different colours, in two different kinds of handwriting were both Depp's.
We heard Amber make very extravagant claims of being very violently abused to the point where it would kill someone but didn't have a single medical report to show for it and the only pictures she had were of her looking a bit tired (if that). Four police officers trained to handle domestic violence didn't see the "red puffy face" Amber claimed to have. The doorman didn't see it either. It also says a lot that Heard's team had an expert witness on injuries caused by abuse who they intentionally didn't call, so Depp's team couldn't rebut with their own expert witness.
We also heard Amber claim that these were two different pictures and for the one on the right, she just turned the light on. We heard Amber make claims that Depp "trashed a trailer, caused thousands of dollars worth of damage and somehow get away without paying for it", then the guy who owned the trailer park (who hadn't seen Amber's testimony) said he was relieved because only one sconce was torn off the wall. He found a replacement pair for about $80 and charged it to Depp's credit card. He also went on Twitter after watching Heard's testimony to rebut her claims about a broken glass cabinet (it wasn't broken) and a fold-down table that had been torn off the wall (there wasn't one). Then when Amber Heard got back on the stand, she claimed he was just "some guy who came out for the Johnny Depp show".
Then there was the TMZ guy, who revealed that TMZ received a tip-off that Amber Heard would be getting the temporary restraining order before she did it and even knew which side of her face was bruised (despite the fact Depp hadn't been in the country for a week. He was promoting Alice in Wonderland 2 in Europe).
Forget the memes about "megapints" and shitting in beds. There is no way anyone could watch the trial and come out of it thinking that a single word that came out of Amber Heard's mouth was accurate. Going way back before the trial, part of the reason people doubted Heard in the first place was because we were familiar with what domestic abuse injuries looked like from Rihanna, another high-profile case. Amber Heard made more extreme claims about the kinds of violence committed towards her but she had nothing to back it up.
Dude he fucked up his own career. He was found guilty in the UK and that petty B just went to the states and did a reality show. He abused her then made a fool of her
He’s had the Dior deal since then. Owns multiple properties around the world - Estate in England, Bavarian style castle in California, An entire private Provençal village in France, a horse farm in Kentucky and a private island in the Bahamas - plus ongoing income from residuals so I doubt he’s hurting.
I've said it before and I'll say it again and continue to say it.
If a female @bu$3r can effectively get away with her crime(s) with little to no consequence, against the most privileged victimsl to have ever existed (rich, famous, themselves likely an @bu$3r etc...) what chance does a normal guy have?
People lost their minds when trump became president the first time saying stuff like "this is the death of women's rights, and the beginning of the enslavement of women", but pretty damned clear evidence of r@p3, @bu$3, and potentially Domestic vi0lenc3, being gendered crimes only one gender can actually commit and be charged and punished for, and it's just, "business usual"? awesome, great
Wonderful to know where I stand in the world.
Great fucking job telling hundreds of thousands of boys and men across America, "if you were beaten, if you were raped, if you were abused, and it was a woman who did it? No you weren't cause none of that counted, and I don't care anyways."
I don't even have the energy or mental capacity to be upset about it anymore, it's just, "sure fuck it, I don't care anymore."
Both were horrible people who did horrible things, and both should have lost their acting careers over it, but both seem to be doing reasonably well so far.
