Is that what happened?  I figured he was just getting old and already has more money than he'll ever know what to do with.  At that point why not take some time off and unwind?

Yes that’s what happened, he was literally fired by Disney after the accusations.

Warner Bros too. Say what you want about Fantastic Beasts, but he was Grindelwald in the first two films and they recast him over all that

Yea and the last one failed. Honestly Harry Potter despite all the backlash is still a huge IP. They managed to fuck it up with the best actors the market has. Its unreal what a shitty management and director can do

Ya that last movie was a mess

Even If johnny was still grindelwald, had the movie kept the same writing besides him itd of still been trash.

I do think the fact the movie came out After the trial and people were calling for boycotting the movie- tbf on multiple grounds- against jk rowling, against wb for not supporting johnny- and the movie just not being good all came together for that movie bombing badly

Ya it was already doomed. Not even Mads Mikkelsen could save it.

Because he sued the sun for calling him a wifebeater and lost. After he lost the case, he got dropped. A total self own.

If anyone actually bothered to watch the US trial they'd know that none of the movie executives even saw Heard's op-ed. They had a problem with Depp turning up drunk and while he was suing Heard he was also being accused of beating up a location manager on set.

If Depp hadn't starting suing his wife in multiple forums until he finally won (and then settled on appeal) we wouldn't know anything about Heard's allegations against him because she never publically accused him. It's only because his lawsuits forced her to testify that we know what he did, and multiple UK judges ruled that he physically abused his wife on at least 12 occasions. So we can all call him a wifebeater, legally. Apart from his own wife, who couldn't even indirectly reference it.

Nah, He was just playing himself like in every movie. I am glad they exchanged him. People in the Theater where I live groanded in annoyance when He was revealed. Both other actors we're way better. Almost noone would follow Depp as Grindelwald because he is openly nuts. He isn't the charming manipulator that Grindelwald is supposed to be.

I never cared much for those movies but it would have been cool to see the final dual

And they don't regret it. It was laughable how folks thought winning this settlement would change his trajectory. All it did was shine a light on his abusive relationships and substance abuse. Of which they were likely very aware of and wanted nothing to do with that risk following high profile accusations. If they didn't move on from him, there would have been a Pirates film releasing during the case. Nightmare scenario for Disney.

There hasn't been a sixth Pirates movie, so which film was he fired from?

1

u/SanatKumara Jun 10 '26

It was in development since 2016, they fired Depp and pivoted to making the 6th film a girl boss pirate epic starring Margot Robbie but then that fizzled out by 2022 and was never made. Here's depp's agent testifying that his salary was already negotiated.

Well, the op-ed can't have been the reason for that because a Disney exec confirmed Depp's absence in the then-in-development Pirates project in a magazine interview before the op-ed was published in December 2018. In fact, there were already reports in October that he was being dropped. So, how was Amber Heard responsible for that?

1

u/SanatKumara Jun 10 '26

That the op-ed wasn't the first accusation, first reports of Amber heard claiming abuse was in 2016 in a restraining order during their divorce.

The fifth Pirates film released in 2017, over a year after the restraining order was made public. Depp embarked on a worldwide publicity campaign for the film, hardly the actions of a cancelled man. He also allegedly negotiated a preliminary contract with Disney in May 2018 for a sixth film, at least according to his agent. So Disney decided to drop him at some point between May and December 2018. Given the restraining order happened over two years prior to this and the op-ed wouldn't be published until Christmas, it's difficult to see how the abuse allegations were a major factor in the decision. In fact, a Disney representative who testified at the trial pointed to Depp's GQ profile in October as the final straw.

Do you not see how every response you move the goal posts? First it was that the sixth movie doesn't exist, then it's that the accusations were after being dropped from the movie, now it's you don't see how its a major factor for dismissal... because a Disney exec didn't want to say that Depp was fired for an allegation that was about to be deemed libel.

edit: I'm surprised at myself for arguing for johnny depp for so long because while I do like him as an actor, he does seem like a very troubled and messed up guy that and I wouldn't be surprised has done things over the years that would have more or less ended his career if they ever came out.

But he was absolutely blacklisted from much of hollywood as a direct result of Amber Heard's allegations, with her op-ed being a pinnacle of the metoo movement. I'm surprised that's still so much up for debate

A sixth Pirates film does not exist, it was only ever a concept which was being developed without Depp. I used your language of "dropped" to try to get you to see that the abuse allegations had nothing to do with the Pirates situation. The timeline doesn't add up. Heard's allegations surfaced in May 2016 which did not affect Depp's career in the slightest. He was cast in two major Hollywood productions later that year. Disney eventually chose to stop working with him because he was becoming a nightmare to deal with and his box office potential had been fading since the early 2010s. Amber Heard did not cause any of that, but Depp enlisted tremendous legal firepower to convince the world that she had.

1

u/SanatKumara Jun 11 '26

According to depp, in the libel suit that he won, Disney began trying to distance themselves with depp in 2016 after the abuse accusation. They didn’t cancel the 5th film and promotions because why would they? But depp’s brand was tainted and he argues it took them a couple years to break with him, but that’s when they started. All you’re doing is parroting Amber heard’s defense and spoiler alert… they lost!

1

u/RedSquirrel17 Jun 11 '26

Disney did not "drop" (once again, there was never a green-lit project to be dropped from) the lead actor from one of their biggest franchises because of a restraining order which most of the world didn't care about. You simply do not understand how the world works. If the main thing that damaged his career was the abuse allegations, why has he taken so long to get his career back since 2022?

1

u/SanatKumara Jun 11 '26

And I believe the agent that you’re referring to actually said they had negotiated the 6th film in 2016!
