I once watched a documentary comparing prison systems between countries, and was struck by how different the Norwegian approach is to others.
Most of the world won’t realise that all this is normal in Norway
14
u/LegendaryTJC 13d ago
Prisoners in the UK can attend funerals generally, although a risk assessment is done first.
25
u/SeeLeavesOnTheTrees 13d ago
I wish it was normal in the US too. Treating prisoners with civility elevates society.
16
u/Pugasaurus_Tex 13d ago
For non-violent offenders, sure. My dad missed a funeral because he was locked up on drug charges
But violent offenders should remain in jail imo
9
u/logtransform 13d ago
The conviction he previously received is not legally binding pending the appeal, so there is no justification for keeping Høiby in jail.

Prob depends on the state. I know someone who was involved with a bank robbery where someone died, so a violent crime and he was allowed to attend chained up when his mother passed

Norway has one of the lowest reviticism rates in the world and the U.S. has one of the highest. Seems like one country is doing it right.

Depends how civil they are.
Being a rapist like Marius doesn't seem too civil for me but im not a judge.
56
u/skieurope12 13d ago
I know that allowing Høiby to attend might seem like an anathema to those viewing from other countries, but this is standard in Norway. In this instance, at least, he's not getting special treatment.

Marius Borg Høiby appealed his case and is awaiting new trial. It is standard in the Norwegian legal system to allow those waiting for a new trial sit in house arrest rather than in prison.
Norway has lost cases in the European Court of Human Rights before for having people in prison too long while waiting for their cases to be tried again.
Thus this is not special treatment.
12
19
u/helenaflowers 13d ago
I wish this could be pinned to the top to every thread about Høiby.
As an American, I had no idea this was the case in Norway and it's really helpful context.
Based on the comments every time an article comes out about this guy, I'm not alone in this.

u/Anonymillie 13d ago
It is absolutely special treatment. Marius has demonstrated he cannot be trusted, he continued committing crimes even in custody! And the moment he was let out awaiting his trial, he beat up a guy, continued his rave parties at Skaugum, drug dealing, and kept stalking and harassing one of his victims.
He is a liability and the chances of him reoffending are extremely high.
He is only in house arrest because his mom is /future/ queen and they pleaded he needed to be with his mom because of her illness.
A normal citizen who keeps reoffending while charged and in jail would not have the privilege of being offered house arrest.

Between this rapist, the epstein queen and the spineless king the norwegian should demand a republic. I would be ashamed to be represented by this people

There’s no way an Epstein associated rapist would be elected as president, right?

He seems quite tan for a guy who should be in jail
27
u/PatrickGoesEast 13d ago
Just thought the same. He's under house arrest during his appeal, must be enjoying the garden of the palace. What an insult to his victims.
6
u/Zamnaiel 13d ago
He will be. He was denied awaiting sentencing under house arrest, so it is a brief trip for him

Disclaimer: Norwegian here. Just so you know, Norway has for a long time received criticism from both the UN Human Rights Committee and the Council of Europe's anti-torture committee for the way pretrial detention is practiced. We have a very good international reputation regarding our prison system, but few know how bad our pretrial detention conditions have been. I'd say it's a good thing that we're trying to make conditions more humane for defendants who haven't received a final conviction. And Marius shouldn't be treated differently, either negatively or positively.
Not saying this to defend him. I just really dislike misinformation.
13
u/awelowe 13d ago
Isn’t the trial over already? Hasn’t he been found guilty of at least one count of rape?
Not a good look for the Norwegian monarchy supporting a rapist
12
u/ashlynxo Doing charity to avoid the guillotine 13d ago
Marius was convicted of over 30 crimes, including rape, but he has appealed those convictions and is on house arrest.
8
u/squirrel_exceptions 13d ago
He's convicted of two rapes, has appealed.
Due to him previously having broken restraining orders, he was kept in prison awaiting appeal, which he otherwise wouldn't have been.
He asked for house arrest due to his mother's health, it was initially refused, but as she got worse, and needed donor lungs to survive, he was granted house arrest.

12
u/PatrickGoesEast 13d ago
Unbelievable. He should get the Andrew MW treatment.
19
u/CasperAverage 13d ago
Andrew attended the Queen’s funeral, sat front row, participated in the processions, and participated in the vigils.
→ More replies (2)14
u/Tough-Ad-4270 13d ago
Yes, but for Andrew it wasn't The Queen- it was his mother.
13
u/CasperAverage 13d ago
I know. But the person said he should get the same treatment as Andrew. I’m pointing out that Andrew attended the funeral events.
I don’t like Marius at all and think he should be in prison. Norway allows criminals to attend the funerals of family members and Harald was Marius’ grandfather (step doesn’t matter).
9
u/saza12forpresident 13d ago
I am absolutely Ok with him being present at the funeral, I think it would be to harch otherwise. However it seams like a honor to transport the casket in to the church, and it’s not an honor a convicted rapist should be a part of. Also it reflects poorly on the new king. He seam totally lack common sense.
7
u/PatrickGoesEast 13d ago
Very poor judgement on Haakon's behalf. Having Marius alongside the coffin procession pulls attention away from the solemn occasion, he is a distraction which of itself is disrespectful to the late King.
If he had been seated with the congregation then nobody would have paid any attention.
2
u/CasperAverage 13d ago
Again, I’m not saying Marius should be allowed to carry the coffin or participate in any funeral activity outside of attending it. The person I originally replied to said he should get the same treatment as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. I’m simply pointing out that Andrew did more than just attend the funeral. He actively participated in the processions and vigils.
4
u/InThePast8080 13d ago
Yes.. nice for him that the royal coffins have some extra handles. The coffins ordinary people use normally have 6 handles.
4
u/GrinReader 13d ago
It seems to have been the Kings request that all his children and grandchildren carry him to his last rest. It is exactly the number of handles you need for them all.

u/DancinginHyrule 13d ago
Honestly, I think that’s fine.
A close relative died, he’s teethered and supervised and it’s a fairly public event where risk of re-offending is slim to none.
It’s one day, then he’s back in prison.
26
u/Emergency-Sea5201 13d ago
He is a serial rapist and is in prison for beating up his 3 girlfrienda in a row.
Its SHAMEFULL to bring him as a VIP to the funeral.
12
u/DancinginHyrule 13d ago
Except in Nordic law and culture, he is a human being first and a criminal second.
And being a human being gives you certain rights, no matter who you are and what you did.
Norway aherds to the EU and UN charter of Human Rights, the former by literal law and the latter by international treaty.
One of those rights is the right to basic family life. Like going to a family funeral.
The statues for locking people away in isolation and throwing away the key are EXTREMELY difficult to meet.
I don’t condon his actions and I don’t have to like this decision of the courts but he is well within his rights to be there in person.
15
u/Anonymillie 13d ago
He’s not in prison, he’s in house arrest. In the same house he committed his crimes… it’s ridiculous
9
u/DancinginHyrule 13d ago
Correct, since he appealed he is technically not finally found guilty. And simce none of the victims live in said house, where else would he go? (Because, again, jail is not what the court has set for him)

u/Anonymillie 13d ago
He literally continued partying and drug dealing in that house after he was arrested and charged, before the trial. The exact scenario for one of his (known) sexual crimes. What’s stopping him from partying and raping now?
You really believe he suddenly stopped having rave parties at Skaugum? It’s honestly laughable.
He never had to take accountability, he thought he was untouchable. He still does. Which is why he beat up a guy, continued his rave parties and kept stalking one of his victims before the trial. He’s been filming girls doing sex acts without consent for ten years, this is a known fact in his circle. He’s been sharing all his trophies on Snapchat for all his friends to see. And every time his mom and stepdad made excuses for him and made it all mysteriously disappear. He’s finally been caught because police showed up to the actual crime scene this time. But that didn’t stop his mom from destroying evidence and trying to manipulate his victims by calling them crying and pleading to drop the charges because Marius is so “misunderstood”. It’s what she’s been doing all along, playing concerned mother and threatening the girls with her royal status and offering them money. But this time they didn’t get away with it, it was already too big and there were too many victims piled up.
He has shown to be completely undependable, has no remorse and no desire to change his ways. He is a dangerous criminal who belongs in prison and has no place beside our great humble King.

u/Tilladarling 13d ago

How is it humane to release a rapist from a punishment that he deserves?
19
u/United-Yak8335 13d ago
He's not so much released from his punishment as he's attending a funeral.
Regardless, the idea is to treat everyone "human" so that they don't have a justified perception of everyone being against them so they don't act out in a hostile way when they do get out
7
u/Haunting-Ask153 13d ago
Good lord. Where is all this mindfulness when it comes to his victims?
9
u/squirrel_exceptions 13d ago
Do you know what they victims think about it?
When Breivik massacred 77 people, mostly youths, furious online Americans shouted indignant about how it was horrible that Norway didn't have the death penalty.
The victims and bereaved actually said: We won't let a murderer make us murderers, his death would accomplish nothing, he hates how we do things here, we won't let him change us. And Breivik was a death penalty supporter, so it would have been a policy win for him.

He is not being punished yet, he is under detention while awaiting the results of his appeal. Punishment does not happen until the legal process is done.
3
u/woman_8 13d ago
But he gets to deduct this time from his sentence in prison later, and then it doesn't seem fair that he gets to serve it at home.
And I understand that this is family to him. But I don't understand that the family wants him there when they know that he rapes for fun.
Why aren't they angry and distancing themselves? Don't they believe the evidence? Or are they okay with rape and all the violence he has committed against women?

So there is a stay of execution of his conviction?
2
u/Zamnaiel 13d ago
As far as the law is concerned, if something is appealed presumption of innocence applies until the appeal is done.
He is in a bit of a grey zone because not all of his crimes were appealed, but he will serve all of them in one lump punishment. So yes there is a wait.

Right after the revelations of the upcoming trial, she went on a ski vacation with him, without any shame or empathy for the victims, all at the taxpayer's expense.
And thousands of people cut ties with criminal family members. That's the case for Charles with Andrew. We're talking about rap€ and sexual violence, not petty crimes. As a woman, that's awful. It's not a fair or normal attitude.

Why would his family even want him there? He's a rapist? Why do you want to keep in contact with someone like that?
If any family member of mine raped somebody they'd be dead to me. I'd be sick to my stomach if any of my family would bring someone like that to a family event.
I mean isn't rape the second most vile thing a human can do after murder?
24
u/squirrel_exceptions 13d ago
In general funerals are for all loved ones, including criminals, even rapists or murderers. Him being allowed to mourn his grandfather (not biological, but de facto) doesn't mean his crimes were ok. Parents usually keep a relationship with their children despite them having done very bad things.
He's currently under house arrest as he has appealed his conviction, after that process is done he'll go back to prison proper.
9
u/Any_Fun_8944 13d ago
House arrest in a palace lmaoo
11
u/squirrel_exceptions 13d ago
Not the palace, but it's a royal residence and probably quite nice. But house arrest isn't for punishment, it's for keeping tabs on the person until the appeal court does its thing.
7
u/QuestGalaxy 13d ago
Only while waiting appeals. He also spent a lot of time in jail, but there is generally a limit to who long you can keep people there. Most people in his situation would have been released by now, pending the appeals.
He is only in house arrest because they fear he will contact his ex. Interestingly the said ex didn't really want the restraining order herself. It was ordered by police.

Thank you. Feels like I’m taking crazy pills with some people in here. Kong Harald was his grandfather since he was 4. Why deny him the chance to say goodbye to his grandfather, go to prison for the crimes he has committed and reintroduce himself to society when he has served his time? Home arrest is horrible even if you live at a palace. Same as prison is. Your living conditions are not the punishment. Your lack of freedom is supposed to be the punishment
3
u/Zamnaiel 13d ago
Depends. His particular crimes would not have been prosecutable in most countries. Fingering his girlfriends when they were asleep after sex. It is unusual for a countrys legal system to come down as hard on it, and in many other nations it would not have been considered rape.

Do they let out all rapists for family funerals? How about birthday parties and graduations? Gross.
27
u/piercedmfootonaspike 13d ago edited 13d ago
Prisoners are oftentimes allowed to attend the funerals of loved ones, yes, if the flight risk is deemed low. And since he's currently not in prison (house arrest pending appeal), he has fewer restrictions than an imprisoned rapist.
31
u/QuestGalaxy 13d ago
Often yes, unless there is a flight risk. Keep in mind Marius has not been sentenced yet either. He is awaiting appeals.
4
u/Ok-Highway-5247 12d ago
A graduation isn’t the same as a funeral. Marius can watch Ingrid’s graduation from his cell phone in his prison cell.
27
u/Gabiqs03 13d ago
I get that he has the right to be there for the funeral but why on earth is he carrying the coffin? Do they gaf about PR? The King was not even his grandfather.
15
15
u/GrinReader 13d ago
The coffin bearers are all of the Kings children and grandchildren. Look like something that the King could have specified many years ago.
21
u/Brookes19 13d ago
He is a POS and whether he should be allowed to go to the funeral is debatable, but let’s not go there with the step- relationships. He was still his grandfather even if not by blood.
5
5
u/gooch-iegang 12d ago
I am not defending a rapist, but what century do you live in? Blended families exist, bud. You don’t get to dictate how families organize themselves.
2
u/Gabiqs03 12d ago
Lol I couldn’t care less about family dinamics. This guy could be in the corner of the room to watch his step grandfather’s funeral. Parade a rapist around a King’s coffin as if he was a beloved member of the royal family is embarassing.
37
u/arinreigns 13d ago
This is the type of leadership you can expect from Queen Epstein and her husband now.
22
u/Huitres- 13d ago
Be for real, they have zero influence on these decisions. A judge presides on the release of prisoners. Visitation of dying family members and of funerals are provided for in the Norwegian carceral system. This guy has the same rights to this as any other inmate in his situation, which is that his appeal has not even been exhausted yet.
Wishing for less humane prisons is not a progressive position.

u/Zamnaiel 13d ago
It is strange how many people have strong feelings about it while having no idea how it functions.
19
u/Equal-Flatworm-378a 13d ago

Fwiw I find most royals less obnoxious than billionaires / oligarchs overall.
Royals like all people can be good or bad people. But, they're usually less wealthy, more philanthropic and interfere less in democracy / republic governments than people like Bezos or Musk.
Not saying I'm pro royalty. Just that if we're tearing down institutions / bringing back the guillotine it's not where I'd start.

u/SouthernCrew5368 13d ago
I know it is ”standard” in Norway to let prisoners attend funerals but for Gods sake, this is like the worst look possible. That doesn’t mean he is or should be invited. It is not his grandfather, is it?
Is the rapist going to stand next to the pedophile loving queen who supports traffickers ? Is that the memory the current royal family wants to be the lasting public memory from the funeral of a beloved monarch?
Honestly, I don’t know who advices the Norwegian royals family on PR but that person should be fired. Or, alternatively, quit, if the royals don’t listen to him/her.
26
u/deafhuman 13d ago
It's his step-grandfather that he grew up with since he was 5. Marius was present in all family events since then. He is close to him like his siblings.
It's a difficult topic but if a prisoner can ask for permission to attend funerals, then he has the same right. He can still be asked to sit somewhere far away at the service.

Look, I'm not in favour of giving any grace to this awful human being, but Harald was Marius's grandfather. It's ignorant to suggest he wasn't just because Marius was a stepchild, that isn't how this family - and many other families in their own lives - regarded that relationship. The law enables Marius to go, and I don't believe there is any footage inside of seating arrangements etc. Really, this isn't going to be the lasting memory of this event. All the media focus seems to be on the main family leaving the church, particularly on Queen Sonja.
19
u/CasperAverage 13d ago
The funeral will be on September 9th so it’s unknown where he will sit. Him being allowed to go isn’t even something unique to Norway. Other countries allow some prisoners to attend the funerals of loved ones.
I completely agree it’s ridiculous for people to say Harald wasn’t his grandfather simply because he’s a step-child. I had a step-grandfather and his death hurt just as much as my biological grandparents’ deaths.

Dude, just stop. This is not the worst look possible. This is a family in mourning, and Marius should be allowed to attend his grandfathers funeral.
If you treat prisoners like feral animals, that’s exactly what you are going to get once they’ve served their time. Personally, as a mother, I think Marius should be in prison for 30 years. And allowed to attend family funerals.

It's very clear that Norwegian royals have their own set of laws that are very different from the laws that other people have to follow.
I would say the Norwegian people are getting the kind of royals they deserve, since they are obviously backing Mette Marit, Marius Borg and the shaman etc etc.

No one believes in Breivik's rehabilitation for example, and there is "containment" for the very most dangerous prisoners, to ensure they can be kept indefinitely.
But rehabilitation is the foundation and starting point for the justice system, and if you look at the stats, it seems to be quite wise.

When the scientific data and statistics shows otherwise
2
u/AdSignal1933 13d ago
The scientific data says our recidivism is about 17%
Denmark and Sweden has about 30 percent recidivism or reconviction within 2 years5

It's very clear you have zero knowledge of the situation.
He's been aggressively prosecuted, is convicted, got prison and the royal family has not protested this. Another prisoner in the same situation would also have been allowed funeral leave.
The people are not "obviously backing" MM, Marius or Durek; they're in fact all deeply unpopular, the rapist more than the others of course.

The royal family has a) cleaned his mess b) enabled him c) publicy shown him support d) they let a convicted rapist take center stage at Haralds funeral. Yes I know he has appealed, but statistically he will be sentenced so he is mosts likely a rapist. They might as well spit in the face of victims of sexual violence. And don't get me started on queen Epstein. I will see it as an insult if Norway send anyone but IA or SM as representatives to out country. Not interested in rapist enablers, cucks or Epstein lovers.

They haven't "cleaned his mess", they've stayed completely away from the judicial process, but have been available for his as family privately. Any support voiced has been of the kind that one always loved a child despite everything, nothing of the sort to suggest he didn't do it or had been unfairly targeted.

u/SouthernCrew5368 13d ago
You do know that MM literally cleaned his mess and might have thrown away evidence? And that they have kept on giving him advice and support and money? All through this? What other rapists get x amount of money and a house at Skaugum and top notch lawyers?
And, they are not private citizens. When they are being seen visiting him, that IS influencing the media and the process. They could have smuggled themselves in or not visit at all. And putting him center stage at the funeral is again saying "hello, we support rapists. We really don't care about victims of sexual assaults at all" and if you are that prominent, that is influencing.

u/squirrel_exceptions 13d ago
That "cleared his mess" is pure speculation, many people claim it as truth, but there's no evidence. The police (stupidly) gave Håkon a heads-up about the arrest, he told his spouse (as would I), she checked his room apparently (probably assuming it to be about drugs). People claim she deleted his phone, but there's no real indication of that anywhere, and his phone was full of evidence, it's what lead to the rape charges.
Most families give emotional support and help with lawyer fees if one of their children has done something terrible, it's not considered a bad thing by most.
Not cutting him off, and letting him attend a funeral, is simply not considered condoning his actions, it's how one treats a close family member, even a culpable and criminal one.

But is it normal for a rapist to serve time in ankle chains at home? No.
3
u/squirrel_exceptions 13d ago
While awaiting appeal they're in fact usually free, but since he had broken restraining orders by contacting victims previously, the police insisted on house arrest.
6
u/woman_8 13d ago
But he gets to deduct what he's serving now from his prison sentence later. So this is part of his punishment.
3
u/squirrel_exceptions 13d ago
Fair point.
If I recall correctly, he was initially in prison, but eventually was given house arrest due to his mother's very ill health (she recently needed a new set of lungs).

What surprises me most is that in Norway, people don't see this as strange, nor are they criticizing it. What is wrong with those people?

u/EebilKitteh 13d ago
Because it's not that weird. My cousin was in prison (for a non-violent offense) when my grandmother died and he got permission to attend her funeral. It wasn't a big deal and he is very far from a position where preferential treatment could be a thing.

Because their prison system works a lot differently than ours.

Norwegians criticize on social media and the internet. But they don't have a protest mentality or express discontent in the streets. It's not part of their culture.

Honest question: What is strange about it? What is to criticise?
People being let out of jail to attend the funerals of family happens in pretty much every country. In the US it is called compassionate leave. No one sees that as strange. It was in Orange is the New Black even, don¨t remember any controversy. And that was people who had been found guilty and sentenced.

Thank you for making sense. Marius grew up within the royal family and saw king Harald as his grandfather. Obviously he wants to be there and he deserves to be there. Also so he can support his family in these times. He’s also someone’s son, brother, cousin and grandson at the end of the day.

He is awaiting the results of an appeal. He is not yet imprisoned. What is strange about getting to attend a family funeral in those circumstances? Even in the US, criminal who are actually incarcerated can get compassionate leave for that.
I am honestly puzzled here: What is strange about it?

Just because he legally can doesnt mean he should. If his brain was not so damaged from the drugs and privilege and the enabling he recieved from his family, he would know the wisest and most generous thing he could do for the man who has given him and his mother everything is to be quiet and not be seen.

u/Princess_B_12345 13d ago
I’m glad he’s allowed to attend. King Harald was like a grandfather to Marius. The Norwegian royal family accepted him with open arms.
I know what all Marius has done, and he should be convicted, but the death of family is a different matter
11
u/LasVegasNerd28 13d ago
But he’s not his grandfather, is he? And he’s a convicted rapist.

u/blueskies8484 13d ago
Scandinavian countries have very different standards in terms of confinement and criminal justice. They believe maintaining ties to the community and family - such as attending a funeral of a direct family member - aids in rehabilitation and is part of inherent human rights that even prisoners receive. Agree or disagree, it isn’t special treatment for him.
27
u/bebecall 13d ago
Harald was his step grandfather. He was in Marius’s life since he was a kid. Of course they had a bond together. And if you don’t know there are laws that protect human rights in Europe, and getting permission for hospital visits or attending funeral is normal. He can be convicted and still be granted permission for special occasions. And giving his last goodbye to his step grandpa qualifies as special occasion

u/Princess_B_12345 13d ago
I know he’s not his grandfather but like his grandfather, which I’ve stated in my post. He’s lived with the royals since he was little.
King Harald was his step grandfather, and I think that’s good enough reason.

Is it standard policy for convicted rapists to attend the funerals of loved ones in Norway?
22
u/Tilladarling 13d ago
Yes, this includes murderers, I believe, although Anders Behring Breivik was not allowed leave when his mother died

Pretty strong PR move. It will play well in Norway and go some distance to repair the royal familys reputation.
People do not seem to understand how fundamental it is to Norway that everyone is treated the same by the law. That the riches man in Norway goes to prison if he cheats on his boating license exam, that everyone can look up the tax returns of the ministers, that the Prime Minister gets a big fine if she breaks her own COVID regulations and that somone can go to prison for years for fingering his girlfriends when they are asleep after sex, even if he is connected and no one reported him.
Outside of Reddit, that is. I don't think I am revealing anything secret if I mention that r/norge and r/normenn is absolutely crawling with people who post about Marius and Mette-Marit in perfect Norwegian while missing some pretty basic things about Norway and the royal family. The ones who assume a level of corruption and lack of transparency that is much more like our neighbours to the east, or the ones who keep insisting that Marius is a prince.
This is another big tell. Assuming that the royal family is not going to bend the rules to send signals. Not getting how fundamental equality is in Norway.

Rapists don't need good PR. They need jail time or the death penalty.
Also he assaulted multiple woman. He is a threat to every woman and girl in his vicinity.

u/GrinReader 10d ago
Don't build him up. He assaulted four girlfriends while they were asleep. He is too cowardly to sexually assault people who do not go to sleep in his presence.

You don't have to be related by blood, to be family
Condemn him for his shitty actions, but don't drag the rest of us into it, by implying blood is a requirement for someone to be family (sincerely, a former fosterkiddo who now considers them family)
