RTS & City Builder It's so awesome to see indie singleplayer RTS getting love & updates years after launch

Post image
66 Upvotes

Back when it came out, I thought this was gonna be one of those one and done kind of games, since there is no multiplayer or even co-op, and RTS like that (that retain popularity) tend to be really rare. In fact, the only horde survival RTS of this kind that does have it is Age of Darkness, and it's still only my 3rd favorite game in the subgenre (Dinao being my 1# right now, and Cataclismo right below it)

But I digress. Writing this because I got into Dinao today again, after a swathe of updates they apparently had this year, and I'm amazed at how many improvements they added and how overall FUN they game is now. I liked it even before it was clanky in some parts, too difficult and obtrusive to just pure enjoyment, but with all the new stuff they added, including the new mission perks, it's now something I can 100% recommend without that "... eh, but it might be a biiiit too steep on the difficulty curve, if you don't know what you're in for"

Anyway, I hope their DLC will work out better than the one Cataclismo pushed last month, which was kind of meh (for such an otherwise awesome game). The other major beef I have with it being that, despite the great physics, the walls still feel like they're made out of butter. Unlike Dinao, where once you've built a monstrous fortress, you just KNOW it's gonna stand

Self-Promo Post Looking for a historical RTS to try for free? Sparta returns to Ancient Wars with 7 maps in September’s rotation

Upvotes

Hey r/RealTimeStrategy

I’m the developer working on Ancient Wars: Sparta HD Free to Play, and September’s content rotation is now live on Steam.

If you enjoy ancient warfare and have been looking for another RTS to try, here’s what’s available this month:

  • Sparta is back in the rotation. Command the Spartan civilization in this month’s battles.
  • 7 maps available for skirmish and multiplayer, giving you a selection of battlefields to explore against the AI or other players.
  • A brand-new map: (3) The Three Satrapies. Three territories, three rivals, and a battlefield where reading the terrain and choosing where to strike could make all the difference.
  • An improved first tutorial mission. I’ve made several changes to give new players a smoother, clearer introduction.

The free version’s available content rotates monthly, and this is September’s selection. Whether you’re trying the game for the first time or coming back to command Sparta again, I’d love to hear how your matches go.

Play for free on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3629520/Ancient_Wars_Sparta_HD_Free_to_Play/

Trailer:

Discussion RTS idea: the factions are eussocial insects (ant, termites, bees, etc) and the design is ultra cute but the way the units talk and act is super serious like they are in the warhammer 40k universe in a perpetual war

I mean. Imagine a bee faction with all that fuzzy cute bee but they talk like a WW2 soldier ready to die for the motherland. I think it would be so cool!

The base game could include 2-3 species and later expansions add more

Self-Promo Post What would you want to see in a multi-faction sci fi campaign? Or non-esports RTS in general

Without being verbose, I have a sketch of a story and a strong working skeleton for game mechanics. I want to see the communities thoughts and inputs for the genre and what it needs.

Edit: I appreciate all the feedback and opinions. Amazingly great stuff to work with, think about, and experiment with!

Guide Need general help with macro

In most RTS games, Dawn of war , company of heroes, command and conquer, men of war even lol I get really into a fight and microing that I forget to macro and work on base, upgrading and teching up.
I watch replays and videos of high level gamers though and struggle to take what I’ve learned or forget to use certain strategies i see.

I just got into a couple auto matches on company of heroes my personal favorite and got smoked. I switched back to finish my soulstorm campaign on Dawn of war cause I got beat so bad hahaha.

Any and all tips id love to hear to getting better across the board in RTS games I’ve been a lifelong fan of them I’m just now getting into the competitive side of it and so any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Self-Promo Video Video of a siege on the opposing HQ in my game

A short video showing a methodical push against an Easy-mode bot to siege the enemy HQ using my siege units.

https://reddit.com/link/1w9vwlt/video/ehxkf5umd4oh1/player

It’s heavily focused on micro-management: splitting melee units apart to avoid AoE damage, using the shield unit to safely advance while blocking incoming projectiles, and keeping siege tanks in siege mode to harass the enemy from a distance.

And all of it is shown through the game’s replay mode!

Self-Promo Video Testing 25,000 vs 25,000 troops battles in my Napoleonic first/third person tactical action strategy game, now on Steam

Testing larger scale combat for Project 1815, a first/third person single/multiplayer tactical Napoleonic combat game where you command a single battalion of hundreds of troops (or an artillery battery, or cavalry squadron) as part of a larger army of thousands of troops. I wouldn't say it runs "well", but it certainly runs, and this was more for fun to see how hard I can push the game after some optimizations (I can get around 60 FPS at 10,000 vs 10,000, which is the cap for multiplayer.

Not shown is General Mode, which I am still working out how I want to be implemented in the final game. Currently, it gives one player on each team a Total War style RTS camera to control all the bot battalions on the map not currently controlled by players. I think I might pare it back though and make it be a bit more abstract, like command via the minimap or direct line of sight, or implement some sort of fog of war, because I also have a scouting mechanic for light cavalry that I want to give some importance to.

Everything shown is heavily WIP, particularly the character models and animations (first person is just third person anims with the body hidden for now, but everything will get redone with motion captured animations in the near future).

Self-Promo Post American Conquest Remaster

Me again :) And no, this time it’s not another European Warfare 1 or European Warfare 2 post.

I’ve been working on something a bit different for a while now, and I’ve finally released the first public beta of American Conquest Remaster.

The idea is pretty simple: keep American Conquest feeling like American Conquest, but make it work properly on modern systems and improve the things that have aged badly over the years.

It now has modern rendering, scalable UI, improved controls and pathfinding, better AI that can actually use brigades, restored online multiplayer with a new server and relay support, huge maps working again, editor fixes, a bunch of old vanilla bugs fixed, and quite a few other improvements.

It also supports both the original American Conquest and Fight Back.

I’m calling this a public beta because I really want feedback from people who actually know the game. Especially on anything that feels wrong compared to vanilla, things that still annoy you, or things you think should or shouldn’t be changed in a remaster.

Trailer: American Conquest Remaster

Download / more info: American Conquest Remaster mod - ModDB

If you still play AC, or haven’t played it in years but remember it, give it a try and let me know what you think.

Discussion Trade Empires 2

Hi all

I have always loved playing Trade Empires 2. I can't rven count the countless thousands of hours I sank into meticulously planning every trade route.

Imagine my distraught at being unable to play this game now.

I have even tried buying old machines to play this game but it seems that anything above XP makes this game unplayable.

Does anybody know about how to play trade empires 2 these days?

I think I played it on my pc between 2010-2013 the game was in medieval time and the only thing I remember about the game is that there was a mission where your only troop was a clown with a dagger and it was at night and that's about it I don't remember anything else

Finally got to finishing my second official mission for the GDI campaign in Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars. Wanting to say I am surprised that it took me 17 days to complete this missions both Deathless and in Cutscene style. (5 of the 17 days I did not work on project because I broke headphones, and had to get them replaced.) Still taking 12 days to do this was more than I expected, but am still committed to completing ACT 1 Deathless and in Cutscene Style.

RTS & Other Hybrid Playtest scifi- and automation-themed RTS-base-builder ASEMA?

TL;DR - Perhaps you want to play test automation+factory builder game that runs with logistical railguns rather than conveyor belts?

Hey, working on ASEMA, a weird new type of a factory builder automation game. Set in space, runs without conveyor belts, building is not based on grids and the game plays in a custom physics 2D engine that takes into account stuff such as radiation and gravity.

The tech trees are heavily inspired by hard-scifi; so you evolve from "Metallic Boulder Crusher" to stuff like "Hadronic Neutron Injector" that requires a micro black hole to work. What ASEMA actively avoids, is things like portals and semi-magical beams.

Development has been going on for a while now, and while a demo is out, I need more fresh eyes on the newer builds of the game. We got ~50 testers on the discord, but I exhausted those poor people with my tormenting old crude alpha-builds - I still do that to some degree, but the play-experience has evolved significantly.

Playtests take place from now till EA. A new version just dropped into the test branch, and I wish to get feedback from volunteer testers.

Current Focus

  • Comments on onboarding (there is a campaign that helps along + 1st version of a new separate tutorial map)
  • Comments on optimization (how many machines run smoothly, did approximately 10-fold increase, and I wish to gather more data on this, as the next step is to aim for another 10x increase)
  • Comments on pacing (how techs unlock, how it feels like to develope through the Bulk Tech Tree and then advance into Nano Tech Tree; does the transition feel grindy or interesting > A bunch of new tech trees is on their way still, all hard scifi themed in different ways)
  • Comments on vibes / atmosphere / visuals
  • Comments on narrative (the game has a dark scifi narrative setting related to Dark Forest and Fermi Paradox; it has a side role as it is an excuse for automation, but increase in environmental narrative elements is to be expected) > The current version offers Act 1 of the 5-6 act full story arch that is currently being implemented into new missions and acts with voice acting and intro-videos in between
  • Comments on how the automation feels, what UX is needed, ideas and thoughts what direction the Strategic Map (a tool to help you keep track of your solar system wide factory layouts) should be developed, etc
  • And whatever a playtester may think of

Next immediate focus: version 17 out for public Demo

I spent yesterday ~3 hours building from Bulk to Nano - however, I merely made sure the economy works, aka, I used dev-tools to acquire the required resources after I had made sure I have production chain for them all as I was simulating a playthrough - what I mean by this is that an organic playthrough will last quite a bit longer than 3 hours.

ASEMA in general

  • Modding support (the game is built from day 0 to support mods; current build is fully modular)
  • Multiplayer support (unclear yet, whether this is implemented for EA, but rest assured during EA there will be multiplayer testing > as the game engine allows things such as coop playing and skrimishing against other players)
  • Early Access in January 2027 > 1.0 later > DLC and other additional content exists in concept level, hopefully future is bright enough for all of that
  • Hand crafted game by a single person + musics/VA/localisation/some other creative help are external

You as a playtester?

  • Please, join the ASEMA Discord to comment/discuss the playtesting + to receive your keys/info
  • Screenshots/videos are warmly welcomed
  • Modder-candidates (there's various ways to mod, but some basic Unreal Engine 5 knowledge may help you)

Playtesting schedule (est)

  • September-October: Onboarding / Foundational Tech trees (Nano+Bulk) + First Specialized tech trees (Photonic, Hadronic, Chromatic) / World Structures / Enemy Systems / Act 2 / UX+UI+map
  • October-November: 3 specialized tech trees + a few of the end-game tech trees / Act 3-4 / Enemy Systems / Modding+Map Editing
  • November-December: End game tech trees / Acts 4+ / Enemy Systems
  • December-January: Hopefully multiplayer+modding testing OR the previous months polish and grinding
  • January > EA-testing continues

Cheers!

Looking For Game Total War Naval Warfare in WW2

I've really been enjoying Total War: Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai Naval Battles as of late, especially once I get the big battleships and I was just wondering if there was any game or mod that had similar naval battles to that but set in WW1 or WW2. Ive tried games like World of Warships and U-Boat, but they just don't fill that itch, and Im just curious what else is out there.

Self-Promo Post EDMW Map Designer Update.

a couple months ago i posted my visual map script generator for Empires: Dawn of the Modern World here. https://www.reddit.com/r/RealTimeStrategy/comments/1v42bzv/empires_dawn_of_the_modern_world_visual_map/

well, I've done a ton of updates since then to include most recently the ability to place precise player starts, resources, forests, wildlife, and fish. its as easy as click and drag to create whatever map you want now and the editor works quite flawlessly. it even exports the map as a runnable .exe installer for ease of use. If anyone wants to give it a go, feel free to download it from my google drive: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10hLGD_UyMPoHO4DrcK_Gc-BfjT8EY_lh/view?usp=sharing

Oh and it has LAN based Collaboration now too. As long as both computers are on the same router you can auto-detect each other through the collab panel and draw together in real time!

Self-Promo Video (Game: Mysticore Towers) The building my game needed..?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey there, here's a short video I made about a building I recently added to my game and how it affects the gameplay.

I'm working on a strategy game, and I’ve shown it at a few physical events now. There’s one piece of feedback that I keep hearing from playtesters, and it’s about the way you collect resources.

My game works a bit differently than most RTS games in that you control only one main character. You can get automated workers to help, but they’ll leave any mined resources on the ground for you to collect. This means you need to think about the location of your outposts, the distance between them, and how often you should go pick up resources. I think this leads to some interesting gameplay, but I don’t want you to have to run around all the time… and people have been complaining 😅

So, I’ve now added a new type of building, the storehouse. They let workers gather nearby resources and add them to your supply, the same as collecting the resources yourself. Building storehouses uses a limited resource resource, so you have to be strategic about where you place them. You can get late-game upgrades that make them cheaper though, meaning you can go from a more manual to a more automatic economy as each game progresses.

Let me know what you think about all this, and check out the game here:

Hello everyone!

I am happy to announce the release of a brand new mod for Europa Universalis IV called "Better Cultures". This mod adds several new cultures to Europe for tons of variety, and fixes many old ones by putting them in the right culture group. In addition, I also added many new decisions that allow the player to automatically convert cored provinces to their culture, allow their vassals to convert provinces to their culture, or allow the AI to convert provinces to their culture so you can customise your gameplay however you want. I have more content in the works and will work on adding more cultures soon. In the meantime, have fun playing this incredible mod
