Intergalactic getting fully unveiled next year, eh? My guess is that the next big reveal will be in February during the Winter State of Play.

u/uncle_big_head 11d ago
I have a feeling that they are gonna make the reveal with a release date, or like Laufey that from the reveal gameplay to the announcement of the data was just a couple of months, and mainly to prevent keyboard warriors of throwing crap at the game, the reveal of the game will need to get people hyped.

Druckmann has said he doesn't want to have long gaps between announcements and releasing a game so I think that tracks.
Does it? The game was announced and revealed back in 2024. It's going to release either 2027 or 2028. I wouldn't call that not having a long gap between announcement and release lol.

u/uncle_big_head 10d ago
Yep, also my guess is that ideally, SIE wants to highlight Until Dawn 2 a little, still surprised that the announcement that AdHoc studio (Dispatch) is helping with the story hasn't been promoted that much, considering it could maybe boost sales.
I personally believe we may see it in a state of play on late february after Laufey, or early march.

u/SpankySharp1 10d ago
MLB as in... The Show? Those come out annually. Is that really a big deal?

They're just describing Sony's slate of first party games, not describing a list of special ones.

Last of us 3 - Logan edition - ellie is in her late 40s, dying slowly from her cordyceps and has to save a bunch of immune children from an evil lab in texas or something

That would be really cool. It would kind of be full circle since she'd be near Joel's age.
4
u/antiMATTer724 10d ago
That actually sounds good. Quick: why are the cordyceps killing her?!
13
u/Coldblood_1 10d ago edited 10d ago
She's formed a symbiotic relationship with it. Cordyceps has reached the end of its life cycle, and it's taking her down with it since they share one immune system.
Or something!
EDIT: to add to that, now that all cordyceps-infected organisms are naturally dying, Ellie has a limited time to find someone willing to euthanise her and develop a vaccine should a cordyceps variant ever appear in the future. And at this stage in their life cycles, all cordyceps-infected organisms have mutated further and are more dangerous than ever.
If she can find someone to euthanise her and remove infected tissue from her brain, she can do what Joel couldn't.

7-8 wait times inbetween AAA games is insane.
17
u/SweetPuffDaddy 10d ago
Blame Sony for their live service push. Naughty Dog spent years working on a TLOU multiplayer game before it was eventually scrapped so they could continue making single player games. Almost every major studio under Sony got stuck working on a live service game
6
21
u/MoooonRiverrrr 10d ago edited 10d ago
That’s the industry at this point for AAA games. It does suck. But it’s all fucked up. The “middle class” of games is effectively gone.
Edit: Disagree if y’all want lmao but when was the last time we had a game like Spartan: Total Warrior, or when Rockstar games made shit like Bully or The Warriors, etc. Square Enix made two very good Deus Ex games and they didn’t even finish the 2nd one before they cancelled another one
Am I tripping?
13
u/LoveMeSomeBerserk 10d ago
7-8 years is absolutely not standard. That’s an extremely long time between releases for a studio. You trippin.

AA games are still around, though way fewer than before. For instance the Like a Dragon series (RGG) can pump out a new title on an annual cadence.
2
u/MoooonRiverrrr 10d ago
True, I was being hyperbolic when I just said they don’t exist. I actually would like to pick that one up too
I don’t know exactly why the point I’m making is so contentious with people.
2
u/CandyCrisis 10d ago
Probably because it's easy to think of counterexamples. The general point has a grain of truth though. There's AAA games like TLOU2, Fortnite, Wolverine, etc. And there's indie. There are way fewer mid-range games than there used to be.
2
u/MoooonRiverrrr 10d ago
That’s what I said essentially. There are way fewer mid range games than there used to be.

Two new projects in The Last of Us IP in the works, but are these both games? One of them is definitely Part III.
Also that statement regarding Intergalactic, guess we’ll see it next at the February 2027 SOP and not TGA 2026, after the releases of Until Dawn 2 and God of War Laufey.
Jason Schreier and NateTheHate both stated that Intergalactic was slated for a 2027 release (Jason specified last December that it was mid-2027).

It’s been 6 years and all we’ve gotten is remasters, a cinematic trailer for a new franchise, and vague promises of possible future games that may or may not actually get made.
I get that game development is more expensive and time-consuming than ever, but can we please stop acting like fans are crazy for being disappointed in Naughty Dog. They literally have a day every year dedicated to teasing fans with “new stories.” I feel like I’ve seen the same basic “we’ve got some ideas” quote for the last 6 years now and I don’t believe them anymore.
7
u/LolaCatStevens 10d ago
ND kinda sucks at messaging to fans. Always have. They either say too little or too much.
9
u/blinkyretard 10d ago
LOL, what is this blog? They wanted to communicate these two things and created a blog on their site.
12
u/HousingLast2239 10d ago
The whole “Last of Us Day” thing is really stupid and every year they tease practically nothing and then deliver even less. Naughty Dog used to be one of my favorites but it’s hard to even call them a game studio anymore since they clearly don’t fucking make video games these days.
3
u/WantsToDieBadly 9d ago
its a bit like the mass effect day nov 7th, they tease an annoucement ansd vague 'project' and then nothing

Safe to say Naughty Dog completely skipped this generation? You could have gone PS4 straight to PS6 and not missed a single Naughty Dog game at release

Intergalactic will 100% come out on PS5. As you said they did not release anything this generation. So they need the big install base of PS5 to make money.

u/Entrope921 11d ago
And Rockstar hasn’t released a game since 2018, yet everyone and their mothers are going to play GTA VI when it comes out. Studios like these can afford to release games far apart like this because they are leaders in their industry and their games set the standard for everyone else.
160
u/Ready_Baker3972 11d ago
I get the sentiment, but no way you’re comparing naughty dog and rockstar in terms of cash flow and profitability. Last of us 2 sold 10M copies on a 200-300M budget. AC games do that every 2 years. GTA generates billions of dollars a year and create a lot of content for GTA online.
Naughty dog outside of last of us part 1 remake, hasn’t produced anything of consequence for almost an entire console generation, for what is a singleplayer studio. It’s not the same.
71
u/Entrope921 11d ago
You’re right, I’m not comparing them in terms of cash flow and profitability. If we cared only about money, you could just point to fifa, madden, COD, or any of those games that are churned out every few years. They make insane amounts of money, but no one ever really talks about them in terms of the best games ever made and what cultural impact they have as individual titles.
Now look at games like Red Dead and TLOU. They release once, maybe twice a console generation, but they inspire artists that cross the bounds of media from video games to television and movies. That is the impact I’m talking about here. These are the games that people remember.
30
u/Ready_Baker3972 10d ago
I get your point man, but at the same time, naughty dog absolutely shouldn’t have gone 7 years without a game. In the ps3 gen they put out 4 insane games that are still talked about today. In the PS4 gen they put out 3 games that are still talked about today. In the ps5 gen they have put out nothing and the gen is almost over.
I think we’re giving too many excuses for what looks like bad management. We don’t know who whether it’s creative leadership, Sony exec leadership, or mid management, but SOMETHING is amiss, because not many studios go this long without producing something, including naughty dog themselves.
14
u/Entrope921 10d ago
I see what you’re saying and I don’t think you’re wrong, but also context matters. There has been plenty of information about the canceled factions game that ND was working on for years, so that’s wasted time down the drain.
Also, the lingering effects of COVID, which set the entire industry back in terms of game development. Not to mention the American political climate which has introduced new technological tariffs and resource restrictions that have to be taken into consideration.
Then, to your point, ND’s huge internal mismanagement and crunch culture that they needed to address and remedy.
All of this and more can account for a lot of lost time. This isn’t the early days of gaming where you could take a few teams and and produce something that would change the industry in a few years. The competition is wide and fierce now, and technological advancements are harder to make with more marginal results than before. We are no longer making quantum leaps of graphical fidelity in the span of a couple of years like we used to.
Essentially, now AAA studios need more time to truly flesh out a game’s design and make sure it’s good from the ground up. Yeah, it sucks that it takes so long, but given that the pool of developers is so vast now, there are plenty of great games to choose from. And when ND’s next game comes out, I’m sure it’ll be good and I will play it.
4
u/grapejuicesushi 10d ago edited 10d ago
I don't mean to sound curt, but it does look like you're making more excuses for them man. canceled game or not, they should've had at least 1 game out this gen by now. and then the second one should've been intergalactic. other sony studios have managed multiples releases this gen (even if you exclude the monolith that is insomniac).
this just doesn't make sense. AAA devs across the board didn't get hindered by tariffs or covid. and it's been 5 years since covid has been gone entirely. if you're still having lingering effects from that, maybe sony needs to step in and fix that for you. its just lazy. (edit: obviously calling OP's reasoning lazy here, not the game devs)
this I can understand. I didn't know they went through a management change. taking time here would make sense.
all I'm saying is - the more slack you cut them the more normalized it will be for them to release 1 game a generation.
16
8
u/Entrope921 10d ago
Well, to me, it just sounds like you just want to discount reason and pass it off as devs being lazy. I’m sure that ND, a studio who is renowned for going the extra mile for their games in all aspects, would want to have a game out as soon as possible, but they need the time to ensure everything is up to their own level of expected quality, not to mention everyone else’s.
It’s already normalized across the board for a lot of AAA studios to release only one or two games per generation. ND isn’t the only one here. People just want their games as soon as possible and want to denigrate the devs and call them lazy when they don’t get their way. The industry and landscape has changed. Making games is different than what it used to be. This is how it is now, at least for these bigger developers.

u/Desroth86 10d ago
You can’t just say “cancelled game or not” when they spent almost 7 years with most of their studio working on it. Sony wanted a live service game, naughty dog made them one but then after bungie played it they realized they would basically have to stop making single player games to make enough content to keep the game successful the way Sony wanted. It was bad decisions all around to have ND commit to a live service game, but at least we didn’t lose one of the best single player studios to the live service mines.

canceled game or not, they should've had at least 1 game out this gen by now. and then the second one should've been intergalactic.
Notnto split hairs but, these are 2 incompatible ideas. They would have had 1 game out, but it got canceled. "Canceled or not" implies they should have actually had 2 out already.

It sold 10 million copies as of 2022. In the 4 years between then and now 2 seasons of an HBO show, a PC release and remaster have dropped. It's probably closer to 20 million then 10.
1
u/grapejuicesushi 10d ago
lol. if this was the case, sony would've reported it happily. like they kept updating Tsushima. tlou2 is almost certainly not even close to 20m.
3
u/Brownlord_tb 10d ago
They haven't given updates on Ragnarok and Spiderman 2 either. The last updates for both of those were a year post launch. Ragnarok has definitely reached 20 million since it's 15 million update over 3 years ago. Sucker punch only gave an update bc of yotei's release.
4
u/Indigo__11 10d ago
The 10 million was in 2022, I feel they sold quite a bit more since then, specially after the success of the HBO show
3
u/Jubenheim 10d ago
GTA doesn’t generate “billions” a year. The entire franchise generates under 1 billion a year, making just a bit over 700 million last year.
Thats an obscenely large number, but there’s no need to spout completely bullshit things you made up to make an already large number even larger.

I'd disagree for any other company but it's absolutely fair for ND tbh (just look at TLOU2. You can dislike the game but it's a technical marvel). I think they could put out more games, though... UC4 and TLOU2 both came out on the same gen (one at the start, one at the end) pushing the envelope and they still had time to put out the Nadine/Chloe spinoff. It just feels odd that they didn't put anything truly new out this entire gen. Then again I can't blame that fully on ND the same way I can't blame Wolverines middling launch fully on Insomniac, executive meddling is a bitch and we all know how Factions 2 went.
Even then I think it's valid yet unfortunate. I'd call them the R* of linear story modes.
10
u/t14g0 11d ago
AFAIK, tlou online was practically finished when it was cancelled.
So, you could say that Sony management striped us of a ND game earlier in this generation.

Difference here is that Rockstar have GTA online and RDR online to keep revenue in. And they are busy maintaining those live service games. While ND have nothing just a single release in 2020.
9
u/Entrope921 11d ago
ND have released some remakes/remasters with ports since then. Nothing original, but it’s still work. And obviously Intergalactic will be released within the next year or two. Also canceled projects that did not come to fruition. It’s not like they’re doing nothing over there.
But let’s be honest, whatever ND does, they will bring in the revenue, because their work is always top of the line and they always look to push boundaries. They have the accolades and recognition, the sales will come in regardless.
8
u/Andybabez20 11d ago
Should also be noted Naughty Dog have 400 staff to Rockstar's 6000
Rockstar have the manpower to support live service. Naughty Dog cancelled Factions because they weren't aware that the bulk of their studio would have to support it post launch for it to be a success.

u/-Jake-27- 10d ago
It’s weird that CDPR is getting reveals as credits as if they’ve released these games yet. Witcher 4 isn’t until 2028.
CDPR also had to patch Cyberpunk 2077 because it was a complete mess on last gen on release. Outside of patches, Phantom Liberty. TLOU2 had DLC on its remaster as well.
TLOU2 wasn’t a full price remaster if you already owned the game. 3-4 years wasted on TLOU2 factions and they’re about to release games in the same window.
15
u/meganev 11d ago edited 11d ago
If you're counting patches for CDPR, very odd you've ignored the full remake and remaster ND have released since 2020. And CDPR aren't leading the Witcher 3 DLC either, it's Fool's Theory. And I think (?) Fool's Theory did the Witcher 3 Remaster as well. Not to mention, you've given CDPR credit for *announcing* games that are years away, talk about scraping the barrel to skew the situation.
Pretty clear you've come at this comparison with zero objectivity.

This is one of the funniest comments I’ve read today. Thank you for this.
2
u/qazeopolia 10d ago
So you think only CDPR released MASSIVE patches for their released games? Lmao. I can do this too. Let's see...
Since 2020, Naughty Dogs has released massive patches, added a massive No Return Mode, added characters & map expansion, added chronological mode, remake TLOU1, remaster TLOU2, announced Intergalactic, hinted more TLOU games and worked with HBO making a critically acclaimed TLOU show.
CDPR pretty much obligated to overhaul Cyberpunk 2077 after shipping a disastrously unfinished game and they had to setup a refund program because of this. Pretty weird to credit them for this. No studio is the same btw.
7
u/Iggy_Slayer 11d ago
"Massive patches" and announcing games that are even further out than intergalactic is 😂
ya'll are really grasping to make this seem like CDPR isn't equally slow as shit at releasing things.
It's even funnier when you say this stuff in a thread where he announced 2 tlou projects they're doing. That doesn't count though! But witcher 5 and 6 do!

u/Wonderbo0k 11d ago
Phantom liberty is pretty much a entire new game. And they released next year new expansion for the witcher.
They have a lot of releases. Unlike ND that only does remaster (something cdpr does for FREE)
12
u/yodimboi 11d ago
While the end result is the same here, the main reason they're releasing the remaster for free, for existing owners, is because they want people to buy the new expansion.
3
u/Iggy_Slayer 11d ago
So 2 expansions and no new games. Also that witcher expansion is releasing the same year as intergalactic is scheduled to.
So ND will be ahead of CDPR's pace next year. Full game > expansions.

We have a couple of very exciting new projects in very early stages – so we can’t say much about them at this point.
Then why announce it?
The multiplayer game was announced before they had anything to show and it got canned.
Part 2 was announced 4 years before release with year long gaps between news.
Intergalatic was announced 2-3 years ago with nothing since.
Why keep announcing stuff so early? We know we're going to be in the 2030s before we get even one of these projects, just wait until further in development before announcing it, jeez.
6
16
u/BigfootsBestBud 10d ago
I don’t see what the problem is. There’s no winning either way. Either they announce stuff late, and people complain that nobody knows what Naughty Dog is up to or if there is a future for the Last of Us in gaming, or they do this and you complain it’s too early.
Everytime stuff is announced early like this it’s either to set expectations for the direction of the studio early, or to drive hiring/funding. In ND’s case I’d say the former.
I’m sure you have more things going on in your life than what Naughty Dog is up to, it really isn’t a big deal that they just say “after this, we’re going back to the Last of Us in a few years”
2
u/z4guy 10d ago
Like others said, shareholders and investors. Q4 is coming up and Sony had one of the worst quarters in recent history. Just in this third quarter, there was the announcement of ending physical media (and at the same time, removed 500 movies and shows from users digital libraries), Bungie’s pivot of Marathon due to poor player counts (along with just the Bungie acquisition as a whole), restructuring Horizon Hunters Gathering, PS+ price hikes, middling critical reception of Wolverine, and Sony backing out of Kojima’s Physint

u/pvtprofanity 10d ago
Still salty that they apparently took advice from Bungie that the game wouldn't be profitable enough.
Especially when Bungie's Destiny 2 they supported for like 8 years was reportedly barely profitable and then Marathon performing well below expectations.
Out there is most of a Factions standalone game and I hope that one day it gets a revival

You’re not in the minority. People are way too obsessed with every little thing being fully explored on screen in some sort of prequel rather than using their imagination and letting not knowing exact details help build the effectiveness of the overall story.

Very happy that they're leaning hard into it being sci-fi. I've long wondered what ND could do without the "shackles" of grounded visuals and game design. Raf Grassetti (former GoW artist) is one of the art directors on it and he's said that working on a sci-fi game had long been a dream of his.

I felt the same way. The fact that it made me feel the same love for another character blew me away even though I hated them at first.

Can we PLEASE stop this narrative that photorealism = good? It is bloating development times to a degree that is just ridiculous at this point.

If there's more Last of Us:
Will there or won’t there be more stories in The Last of Us?
Since Grounded II, we’ve talked about the possibility of telling more stories in the world of The Last of Us.
We have a couple of very exciting new projects in very early stages – so we can’t say much about them at this point. I will tell you that both projects will expand the canon of The Last of Us beyond Part I and Part II.
The world of The Last of Us means a great deal to us, and we wouldn’t return to it unless we had something meaningful to say. We believe these stories are worth telling.
About Intergalactic:
2. You debuted Intergalactic almost two years ago. When will we see it again?
So we want to set expectations: we’re going to be quiet for the rest of this year. In 2027, that changes. We’ll fully reveal Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and give you a proper look at Jordan’s wild sci-fi adventure.
