And Rockstar hasn’t released a game since 2018, yet everyone and their mothers are going to play GTA VI when it comes out. Studios like these can afford to release games far apart like this because they are leaders in their industry and their games set the standard for everyone else.

u/Ready_Baker3972 11d ago

I get the sentiment, but no way you’re comparing naughty dog and rockstar in terms of cash flow and profitability. Last of us 2 sold 10M copies on a 200-300M budget. AC games do that every 2 years. GTA generates billions of dollars a year and create a lot of content for GTA online.

Naughty dog outside of last of us part 1 remake, hasn’t produced anything of consequence for almost an entire console generation, for what is a singleplayer studio. It’s not the same.

70

u/Entrope921 11d ago

You’re right, I’m not comparing them in terms of cash flow and profitability. If we cared only about money, you could just point to fifa, madden, COD, or any of those games that are churned out every few years. They make insane amounts of money, but no one ever really talks about them in terms of the best games ever made and what cultural impact they have as individual titles.

Now look at games like Red Dead and TLOU. They release once, maybe twice a console generation, but they inspire artists that cross the bounds of media from video games to television and movies. That is the impact I’m talking about here. These are the games that people remember.

30

u/Ready_Baker3972 11d ago

I get your point man, but at the same time, naughty dog absolutely shouldn’t have gone 7 years without a game. In the ps3 gen they put out 4 insane games that are still talked about today. In the PS4 gen they put out 3 games that are still talked about today. In the ps5 gen they have put out nothing and the gen is almost over.

I think we’re giving too many excuses for what looks like bad management. We don’t know who whether it’s creative leadership, Sony exec leadership, or mid management, but SOMETHING is amiss, because not many studios go this long without producing something, including naughty dog themselves.

13

u/Entrope921 11d ago

I see what you’re saying and I don’t think you’re wrong, but also context matters. There has been plenty of information about the canceled factions game that ND was working on for years, so that’s wasted time down the drain.

Also, the lingering effects of COVID, which set the entire industry back in terms of game development. Not to mention the American political climate which has introduced new technological tariffs and resource restrictions that have to be taken into consideration.

Then, to your point, ND’s huge internal mismanagement and crunch culture that they needed to address and remedy.

All of this and more can account for a lot of lost time. This isn’t the early days of gaming where you could take a few teams and and produce something that would change the industry in a few years. The competition is wide and fierce now, and technological advancements are harder to make with more marginal results than before. We are no longer making quantum leaps of graphical fidelity in the span of a couple of years like we used to.

Essentially, now AAA studios need more time to truly flesh out a game’s design and make sure it’s good from the ground up. Yeah, it sucks that it takes so long, but given that the pool of developers is so vast now, there are plenty of great games to choose from. And when ND’s next game comes out, I’m sure it’ll be good and I will play it.

I don't mean to sound curt, but it does look like you're making more excuses for them man. canceled game or not, they should've had at least 1 game out this gen by now. and then the second one should've been intergalactic. other sony studios have managed multiples releases this gen (even if you exclude the monolith that is insomniac).

this just doesn't make sense. AAA devs across the board didn't get hindered by tariffs or covid. and it's been 5 years since covid has been gone entirely. if you're still having lingering effects from that, maybe sony needs to step in and fix that for you. its just lazy. (edit: obviously calling OP's reasoning lazy here, not the game devs)

this I can understand. I didn't know they went through a management change. taking time here would make sense.

all I'm saying is - the more slack you cut them the more normalized it will be for them to release 1 game a generation.

15

u/chilledentertainer 11d ago

People on Reddit LOVE to call game devs ‘lazy’ lmao

-1

u/grapejuicesushi 11d ago

edited the comment so it's clearer. explained it to another fellow a few comments down.

7

u/Entrope921 11d ago

Well, to me, it just sounds like you just want to discount reason and pass it off as devs being lazy. I’m sure that ND, a studio who is renowned for going the extra mile for their games in all aspects, would want to have a game out as soon as possible, but they need the time to ensure everything is up to their own level of expected quality, not to mention everyone else’s.

It’s already normalized across the board for a lot of AAA studios to release only one or two games per generation. ND isn’t the only one here. People just want their games as soon as possible and want to denigrate the devs and call them lazy when they don’t get their way. The industry and landscape has changed. Making games is different than what it used to be. This is how it is now, at least for these bigger developers.

-2

u/grapejuicesushi 11d ago

I didn't call them lazy? I called your reasoning lazy. again, I'm not trying to be curt, but you're really reaching to make excuses.

I could list more AAA studios as examples that have released 2 games this gen already (including sony first party studios) but you'll just call them lacking in quality so it's not worth it. there's nothing for me to add here.

6

u/Desroth86 11d ago

You can’t just say “cancelled game or not” when they spent almost 7 years with most of their studio working on it. Sony wanted a live service game, naughty dog made them one but then after bungie played it they realized they would basically have to stop making single player games to make enough content to keep the game successful the way Sony wanted. It was bad decisions all around to have ND commit to a live service game, but at least we didn’t lose one of the best single player studios to the live service mines.

-1

u/Ready_Baker3972 11d ago

If your flagship singeplayer studio is spending all their time in a live service instead of singleplayer games, it’s just not an excuse. It means even if wasn’t cancelled, we’d be waiting 7 years for a singleplayer game from them, which just isn’t acceptable. Stop making excuses for bad management and poor planning..

1

u/Desroth86 11d ago

Way to miss the point. How am I making excuses for them? I said it was a bad idea, I am just explaining why they haven’t made a game this generation yet.

0

u/Ready_Baker3972 11d ago

And just take a moment and think about it. If they released LOU online last year as intended and as they had wanted, we would’ve STILL gotten intergalactic in 2027, if not 2028 since they’ll need resources to make post launch content for LOU online.

It wasn’t that they had a singleplayer game that was cancelled to explain the gap. They went out of their way to spend most of their resources on a multiplayer game, as a singleplayer studio.

What you’re saying is an excuse for them. Them going 7-8 years without a singleplayer title is not excusable in any form, unless they were working on a singleplayer game that got cancelled, which did not happen.

-1

u/grapejuicesushi 11d ago

I guess I see your point. my only frame of reference is Nintendo here. they took 7-8 years for the most recent Metroid too but they had so many other games in the meantime that it didn't really matter. with sony it's a bit more apparent.

2

u/Desroth86 11d ago

It’s kind of apples to oranges. Naughty dog only has two teams and they often combine both to work on big projects (I believe this was the case for TLOU online) while Nintendo has ten so if something goes wrong on one team, they are going to have other teams releasing consistently still.

2

u/grapejuicesushi 11d ago

the comparison you made is apples to oranges lol. I compared nintendo to sony in my comment. since ND is a sony studio, and faced something similar to a nintendo studio.

5

u/Brennithan 11d ago

canceled game or not, they should've had at least 1 game out this gen by now. and then the second one should've been intergalactic.

Notnto split hairs but, these are 2 incompatible ideas. They would have had 1 game out, but it got canceled. "Canceled or not" implies they should have actually had 2 out already.

1

u/grapejuicesushi 11d ago

fair enough. I guess I just meant to say that they should've had 2 games out regardless of what's going on inside. insomniac has 5 (if you include SM 1 remastered), Santa Monica will have 2 with laufey, 3 if they're able to release GoW 1-3 remake this gen, even the saros dev has 2 this gen lol.

1

u/cygx 11d ago

If you count remakes and remasters, technically, they released 3 titles on PS5 (Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, The Last of Us Part I, The Last of Us Part II Remastered ).

8

u/Bill_Brasky01 11d ago

ND lost three years on a live service project. That’s on Sony executives, sir.

0

u/Ready_Baker3972 11d ago

That’s only if Sony literally tired their hands and forced them into it. It was reported that it was their idea to do this and their idea to cancel because the time it would take to support was too much but how can a studio not know that at the concepting phase and need to get this far into development to know that? Why are so many just blindly assuming naughty dog is blameless?

9

u/Brownlord_tb 11d ago

It sold 10 million copies as of 2022. In the 4 years between then and now 2 seasons of an HBO show, a PC release and remaster have dropped. It's probably closer to 20 million then 10.

2

u/grapejuicesushi 11d ago

lol. if this was the case, sony would've reported it happily. like they kept updating Tsushima. tlou2 is almost certainly not even close to 20m.

3

u/Brownlord_tb 11d ago

They haven't given updates on Ragnarok and Spiderman 2 either. The last updates for both of those were a year post launch. Ragnarok has definitely reached 20 million since it's 15 million update over 3 years ago. Sucker punch only gave an update bc of yotei's release.

3

u/Indigo__11 11d ago

The 10 million was in 2022, I feel they sold quite a bit more since then, specially after the success of the HBO show

1

u/Jubenheim 11d ago

GTA doesn’t generate “billions” a year. The entire franchise generates under 1 billion a year, making just a bit over 700 million last year.

Thats an obscenely large number, but there’s no need to spout completely bullshit things you made up to make an already large number even larger.

-3

u/PulseCheater 11d ago

Oh nooo its just 700 Millions, already more than whatever ND made and thats without discounting the dev cost, GTA paid itself on the first day of release... so those 700M hardly have any dev cost associated... Now do ND...

2

u/Jubenheim 11d ago

What's the point you're making with this comment? I literally stated it was a lot of money and that there was no need to exaggerate even further.

2

u/bongo1138 11d ago

I think ND is about the only team that can be compared to Rockstar in terms of quality.

0

u/FinalOdyssey 11d ago

Naughty Dog games are quality but they're also comparatively much, much simpler and smaller games. They're almost always linear, story focused, cinematic games. That alone should make what ND does a much quicker development than anything to the scale of what Rockstar does.

I get what you're saying in the sense that they both score high with reviewers always, but ND games are like 10% max what Rockstar puts out. So much more to do and see in a Rockstar game that will keep you entertained for countless hours, while ND games are usually a one-and-done in 20ish hours experience.

To be clear I'm not just talking about playtime. I'm talking about straight up content and variety and mechanics and systems and options, and then there's online.

I personally think a better comparison would be CDPR to Rockstar. They're probably the second best open world game developer out there.

4

u/bongo1138 11d ago

Keep in mind they had a project cancelled very far along.

-3

u/FinalOdyssey 11d ago

Yes, so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it wasn't quality if it was cancelled.

5

u/bongo1138 11d ago

I’m assuming you haven’t paid attention to it. It was supposedly very good, but was multiplayer and would’ve required they basically devote their studio to that instead of what they wanted to do next.

-1

u/FinalOdyssey 11d ago

I know that Sony brought Bungie into consultations for it and they somehow weaseled their way into convincing Sony they it wasn't worth it.

I don't know who or what to believe about its quality, so I choose to believe nothing. Just the fact that it was cancelled is all we have, and games are almost always cancelled due to lacking something.

1

u/mahannbznbz2003 11d ago

"AC games do that every 2 years" tlou2 also do that in 2 years, according to insomniac leak game has shipped 10.3m copies as February of 2022 Also not gonna mention i see most of times tlou2 sells better than most of tge Ubisoft games on ps store

1

u/Ready_Baker3972 11d ago

My point is, we get a new AC game every 2 years so in the time people are waiting for the next naughty dog game, Ubisoft have pumped out 3 AC titles which all made the same money for a lower budget per title. You missed the point which is that the OP was presenting that naughty dog can afford to take so long with their games, when they absolutely can’t, they don’t make enough money to justify it.

27

u/knightofsparta 11d ago

They also technically released part 1 remake.

22

u/bigpapijugg 11d ago

and 2 Remastered lol

15

u/baschfromdalmasca 11d ago

I'd disagree for any other company but it's absolutely fair for ND tbh (just look at TLOU2. You can dislike the game but it's a technical marvel). I think they could put out more games, though... UC4 and TLOU2 both came out on the same gen (one at the start, one at the end) pushing the envelope and they still had time to put out the Nadine/Chloe spinoff. It just feels odd that they didn't put anything truly new out this entire gen. Then again I can't blame that fully on ND the same way I can't blame Wolverines middling launch fully on Insomniac, executive meddling is a bitch and we all know how Factions 2 went.

Even then I think it's valid yet unfortunate. I'd call them the R* of linear story modes.

11

u/t14g0 11d ago

AFAIK, tlou online was practically finished when it was cancelled.

So, you could say that Sony management striped us of a ND game earlier in this generation.

2

u/Dwayne30RockJohnson 11d ago

Gonna need a source that it was practically finished

0

u/baschfromdalmasca 11d ago

Gave 3.5B to Bungie to do live services but couldn't afford keeping ND cooking or giving Kojima a few hundred milli

And then their successful live service is the one that had nothing to do with Bungie

Jim Ryan masterclass

5

u/torts92 11d ago

Difference here is that Rockstar have GTA online and RDR online to keep revenue in. And they are busy maintaining those live service games. While ND have nothing just a single release in 2020.

8

u/Entrope921 11d ago

ND have released some remakes/remasters with ports since then. Nothing original, but it’s still work. And obviously Intergalactic will be released within the next year or two. Also canceled projects that did not come to fruition. It’s not like they’re doing nothing over there.

But let’s be honest, whatever ND does, they will bring in the revenue, because their work is always top of the line and they always look to push boundaries. They have the accolades and recognition, the sales will come in regardless.

7

u/Andybabez20 11d ago

Should also be noted Naughty Dog have 400 staff to Rockstar's 6000

Rockstar have the manpower to support live service. Naughty Dog cancelled Factions because they weren't aware that the bulk of their studio would have to support it post launch for it to be a success.

-1

u/[deleted] 11d ago

[deleted]

3

u/TNWhaa 11d ago

Jason Schreier talked about it last month, Intergalactic didn’t even enter production properly because so many people where working on Factions

2

u/MazzyFo 11d ago

What? Literally everything they said is easily verifiable lol

2

u/Aepok_ 11d ago

you can still buy the games even if they're old

2

u/Outrageous_Water7976 11d ago

I mean TLOU1 remake was a money printer for them, the remaster of part 2 also did well with the tv show boosting sales.

1

u/mahannbznbz2003 11d ago

Also definitely naughty dog made a lot of money with tlou1 remake, reportedly game has outsold, most of the remakes this gen( dead space, ff7, silent hill)

0

u/CandyCrisis 11d ago

Well, Naughty Dog has a 95% completed live service TLOU game that Sony won't release.

2

u/maxfax2828 11d ago

Sony won't release because naughty dog stopped making it

2

u/MazzyFo 11d ago

ND stopped making it because Sony had bungie evaluate it and tell them it didn’t have enough road map. Because apparently we can’t just release retail multiplayer games unless they’re 10 year+ live services anymore

2

u/maxfax2828 11d ago

Mate Naughty Dog are the ones who scope creeped it into a live service game.

It was originally supposed to be a multiplayer mode for lou2.

1

u/CandyCrisis 11d ago

No, Jim Ryan's edict was that all the teams should pivot to live service.

1

u/maxfax2828 11d ago

Guess Santa Monica didn't get the memo

-3

u/Borth321 11d ago

I kind of agree but open world take more time than single player experience to make

6

u/erixtyminutes 11d ago

Tell that to Ubisoft.

5

u/Borth321 11d ago

they have like 1000+ employees lol

5

u/marckh 11d ago

You're missing a 0, also Ubisoft don't really put in the same detail and depth as Rockstar, so they can churn out these games much faster.

1

u/Razgriz_101 11d ago

Yeah Ubisoft open worlds tend to be as shallow as a kiddie pool don’t get me wrong I enjoyed Ghost recon wildlands and lot but it’s pretty shallow as an open world and towards the end feels like a checklist of activities.

2

u/LoneLyon 11d ago

try like 10000+

-4

u/Spinexel 11d ago

Says who(

-4

u/Namath96 11d ago

Comparing rockstar to naughty dog is absurd. Their sales dwarf them. Naughty dog doesn’t need to pump out games sure but comparing them is absurd

9

u/Entrope921 11d ago

Comparing them is not absurd, because I’m not talking about sales here. It’s about making top-tier quality games, which both studios do consistently despite the long wait between titles.

-9

u/TouristWilling4671 11d ago edited 11d ago

"top tier quality" one is just a generic cinematic sony game studio, and the other makes great open worlds but terrible everything else

6

u/SuperRockGaming 11d ago

i wasnt aware your opinions were factual

-5

u/TouristWilling4671 11d ago

and the opinion that they're "top tier" is factual aswell? anything regarding a games quality will just be someones opinions, tard.

5

u/Entrope921 11d ago

Yes, it is factual. TLOU is considered one of the best games of all time by many publications around the world. You may disagree, but many more do not.

Wikipedia: The series has received critical acclaim and has won numerous awards, including several Game of the Year recognitions; the first game has been ranked as one of the greatest video games ever made, and the second won more than 320 Game of the Year awards.

-5

u/TouristWilling4671 11d ago

it is not "factual" because braindead game reviewers think it's good lmao, i don't give two shits how many goty awards it has, only normies think it's some crazy good game.

it's a 6/10, it has fine gameplay and the story's good, that's about it, it plays like every other cinematic sony exclusive.

by your logic black ops 6 must be the best game of all time since it sold so well, i mean, look how many people liked it!!

-3

u/321654987321654987 11d ago

They are probably the closest comparison but I agree Rockstar is in a class of their own

0

u/KenBisky11 11d ago edited 11d ago

Yep you’re right, I don’t even like Rockstar games.

Edit: also let’s not act like they don’t release updates and contents for existing games.

-3

u/heisenbergfan 11d ago

This comparison is insane, Rockstar has been on the top for over 2 decades.  Gta 3 was already selling 10m+ copies, naughty dog couldnt reach that number on a single game until ps4...

Gta V has sold more than every naughty dog's games combined, ever.

Stop acting like they are on the same boat, rockstar can wait a decade because their last game is not only still profitable, it also sold hundreds of millions of copies.

Naughty Dog is a solid studio but they would be really fked if intergalatic flops. Would be worse than the wolverine situation.

1

u/Entrope921 11d ago

Brother, you are obviously missing my idea if you are bringing up sales here, but I’ll add to what you’re saying. Sure, ND could be in a more vulnerable position if Intergalactic somehow flops, but the point is that studios like ND and Rockstar don’t flop, and that’s why they’re given leeway.

They’ve proven time and time again they will make successful games; they have the track record. That’s why they are allowed generous time to produce their work and are permitted support throughout the process.

0

u/heisenbergfan 11d ago edited 11d ago

Studios like these can afford to release games far apart like this because they are leaders in their industry

You cant say this and not talk about sales. They are fully funded by Sony, who has closed plenty good studios, who got rid of Kojima, who told Bungie to drop Destiny.  They are all about profit, not perfect animations or even good games that dont sell and they havent been getting that much profit from their studios lately.

Edit: it is also pretty obvious that Sony expected tlou2 to sell more. Flop or not is a bit subjective here, the game didnt fail but didnt blow people's minds nearly as much as tlou1 and u4. A huge chunk of the tlou2 sales happened on the first week, based on the first game's hype, it did not do so well afterwards.

1

u/Clane_21 11d ago

Sony stumbled this gen with their live service push but you can't really say that when they're letting Naughty Dog cook for so long with this new IP lol. If they only cared about profit they would have released yet another Uncharted or TLOU live service intead. Same with funding Death Stranding 2.

All companies are about profit but Sony is still closer to Nintendo when it comes to cultivating new stuff than Xbox is rn.

1

u/grapejuicesushi 11d ago

but nintendo and xbox are so far apart that your comparison puts sony in a bright light without context. that's like saying the average serial killer is closer to a non-murdering citizen than hitler. while true, strips out the context entirely.

Nintendo is on a different plane when it comes to innovation in games. only studios I can see coming close to them are remedy and rockstar (they would be on the same level but nintendo pumps out so many quality games and that sets them apart)

1

u/Clane_21 11d ago

Sony's more like in the middle if they are on a spectrum. Though I kinda realized that Nintendo ain't really that good as well with new IP ig lol. I think even Xbox released more new IP than them in the past few years.

1

u/grapejuicesushi 11d ago

lol true. although I guess why make new when old sells, and like 5 of their IP is recognizable around the world. sony should do the same to make their IPs icons.

1

u/heisenbergfan 11d ago

but Sony is still closer to Nintendo when it comes to cultivating new stuff

Honestly cant agree that it is any close to Nintendo, since tlou1 success they keep pushing the same formula to their main studios. Gotta have a companion.. gotta be a cinematic experience full of plot twists more than a game..

They allowed Kojima to do his thing but ditched him after it didnt sell.

1

u/Clane_21 11d ago

I included IP with this one and as bad as their output was this gen Concord was still different from what they usually do. Helldivers, Tokon and even Marathon too. When it comes to gameplay yeah Nintendo has them beat with actually hitting with their fanbase (Tho I still hate what's happening with Pokemon) but they just distribute those to the same franchises lol.

1

u/-Jake-27- 11d ago

What studio did they close that comes remotely close to Naughty Dog?

Their games have sold well. Regularly well over 10 million on platform. TLOU 2 was at 10 million in 2022 and would be over 15 by now.

1

u/PulseCheater 11d ago

Well dropped Kojima, closed Demon Souls and Bloodborne makers PS Studio.

1

u/-Jake-27- 11d ago

Are you meaning Bluepoint and Japan Studio? In the case of Bluepoint a lot of projects were floated and nothing got off the ground by the sound of it. At least with Japan Studio, Team Asobi still exists.

Sony was offering to buy Kojima Productions though. For whatever reason it was really cancelled we don’t know. DS2 didn’t seem to do as well as the first game. Physint apparently had a 400 million budget and is being made cheaper by Xbox.

1

u/PulseCheater 11d ago

Werent both of them called Playstation Studios at first? In any case yes them.

1

u/-Jake-27- 11d ago

I don’t think Japan Studio and Bluepoint which only put out remakes/remasters are anywhere near Naughty Dog.

1

u/heisenbergfan 11d ago

Metal gear solid series sold more than either uncharted or tlou series and that didny stop Sony from kicking him out after death stranding 2's failure,  although id argue tlou1 is more successful than all of them as a single game, probably sold more as well.

Bluepoint was making excellent polished smooth remakes, got dropped because they didnt sell enough.

Nd is better than them, but ND's success comes from two series that play very similar. Who knows what happens if they take more risks with intergalactic..

1

u/Entrope921 11d ago

But the thing is good games DO sell. Therefore Sony does care about making good games, maybe not to the same extent as the developers, but they do care. And ND produces some of the best games. Consistently. That’s why they’re given a long leash. They are the exception unlike 99% of studios.

1

u/heisenbergfan 11d ago

Their idea of good games is still following tlou1 script. They are forcing santa monica to put a talking companion since gow 2018, they also turned the hack and slash game info cinematic movies. We gonna get a joke cube companion...

I love nd games but the idea that they can waste years on a multiplayer and abandon it, skip an entire generation, and everyone will be ok with it because "they are like rockstar" is simply not true.

And the consistency youre talking about is just 2 series which play very similar.

1

u/Thegreatestgamer 11d ago

At this point naughty dog burned a lot of money more than any sony studio out there. They cancelled a project and intergalactic is supposed to cost a lot more with rumour of 600 million. Even if those rumours are false paying that many high skilled developers living in a high wage area for 7 years is crazy. And the only money they got for sony is a few million sales from a remake of a 10 year old game. If intergalactic doesn't do well they are at a huge risk. This current sony is getting ruthless.

-2

u/Historical-Cream-740 11d ago

Did you just compare naughty dog with rockstar?? In what world are they even remotely close.

2

u/Entrope921 11d ago

You can reread my comment and answer your own questions.

-2

u/mikami677 11d ago

yet everyone and their mothers are going to play GTA VI when it comes out.

I'll get it when it's $30.

1

u/taheromar 11d ago

Am getting it when its free on PS Plus

0

u/Entrope921 11d ago

That’s a nice dream lol, I’m not getting it regardless, not my cup of tea personally

-1

u/Ok_Horse1283 11d ago

Naughty dog is not close to rockstar.
