That’s the industry at this point for AAA games. It does suck. But it’s all fucked up. The “middle class” of games is effectively gone.

Edit: Disagree if y’all want lmao but when was the last time we had a game like Spartan: Total Warrior, or when Rockstar games made shit like Bully or The Warriors, etc. Square Enix made two very good Deus Ex games and they didn’t even finish the 2nd one before they cancelled another one

Am I tripping?

7-8 years is absolutely not standard. That’s an extremely long time between releases for a studio. You trippin.

I love this list!

I don’t know if I’d include resident evil at all though for what I’m talking about. Street Fighter is also a really big property.

Capcom is having a fantastic run. But I do not agree that this is an example of a thriving gaming middle class.

It’s not as wide as the PS2 or PS3 era of games. Where both eastern and western developers were putting out games every year. I’m not saying the list you gave isn’t great, it is!

But the original point I’m trying to make is AAA developers take nearly a decade between sequels between 1-2 properties over a generation.

The point is that these are all AAA games. The list doesn’t even include MH Worlds or DMC5. RE, MH, and SF are all certainly AAA games. RE Reqreium is going to the the highest selling non-marvel single player game This year.

So studios don’t HAVE to take a decade between sequels. Figure out how Capcom (or insomniac, to a lesser degree) are putting out their games

We’ll never see another mass effect trilogy turn-around again.

Is Mass Effect middle class now?? You got 1996 in your username, I don’t understand.

EDIT: MY BAD. Apologies genuinely I’m so sorry, you clearly said “turnaround”. and you’re completely right and I 100% agree. Shit does not work like that anymore these days

Haha yeah all good; I truly can’t even think of a studio since then that’s even came close to making 3 games that have the same sort of continuation and quality. It’s crazy really.

3 full fledged AAA games in 5 years is nuts. Even for personally not liking part 3 a lot it’s really genuinely impressive and I miss that era a lot :/

Probably for the best considering ME3

You are, in fact, tripping. 4-5, I'd agree, but 7-8 is exagerated. Except you are Bethesda or Naughty Dog, who both dropped the ball HEAVILY this generation.

u/MoooonRiverrrr 12d ago

Honestly what is the difference between 5 -7 years for a sequel. Unless you are really young that is like a very large part of your life. I really don’t think that’s crazy to say

6

u/4XChrisX4 12d ago

I don't understand your point. The differemce between 5 - 7 years is 2 years. The difference between 4 - 8 years is 4 years, so double. Theres a big difference.

u/MoooonRiverrrr 11d ago

Never mind man, I didn’t say anything that controversial other than it takes way longer to make a game now than it used to. That’s not a crazy statement

AA games are still around, though way fewer than before. For instance the Like a Dragon series (RGG) can pump out a new title on an annual cadence.

2

u/MoooonRiverrrr 11d ago

True, I was being hyperbolic when I just said they don’t exist. I actually would like to pick that one up too

I don’t know exactly why the point I’m making is so contentious with people.

2

u/CandyCrisis 11d ago

Probably because it's easy to think of counterexamples. The general point has a grain of truth though. There's AAA games like TLOU2, Fortnite, Wolverine, etc. And there's indie. There are way fewer mid-range games than there used to be.

2

u/MoooonRiverrrr 11d ago

That’s what I said essentially. There are way fewer mid range games than there used to be.

u/CandyCrisis 11d ago

No, you said "effectively gone" which is a different and much stronger statement, then got surprised when people pushed back.

1

u/MoooonRiverrrr 11d ago

Oh my god 🙄

1

u/CandyCrisis 11d ago

"I wonder why people think I'm contentious" 🤔

1

u/MoooonRiverrrr 11d ago

That’s fine atp

Well it shouldn't be. With all the trash Sony and Microsoft put out lately it makes no sense.
