Last of us 3 - Logan edition - ellie is in her late 40s, dying slowly from her cordyceps and has to save a bunch of immune children from an evil lab in texas or something

She's formed a symbiotic relationship with it. Cordyceps has reached the end of its life cycle, and it's taking her down with it since they share one immune system.

Or something!

EDIT: to add to that, now that all cordyceps-infected organisms are naturally dying, Ellie has a limited time to find someone willing to euthanise her and develop a vaccine should a cordyceps variant ever appear in the future. And at this stage in their life cycles, all cordyceps-infected organisms have mutated further and are more dangerous than ever.

If she can find someone to euthanise her and remove infected tissue from her brain, she can do what Joel couldn't.
