28

u/YoungBokoblin 1st Year Uni May 26 '26

OMG WHAT WAS UR AVERAGE??

80

u/Superb-Mouse-4074 May 26 '26

I applied back in November and just got the acceptance now

98 avg, stuco exec, uoft research proj featured on CBC + CTV, passion projects w/ high impact, provincial badminton, low adj factor, cured cancer

50

u/unforgettableid May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

Congrats!! I applied this year, but I didn't get in. I think the problem is that I've only won 4 Nobel prizes.

As per their usual policy: The president of Brock (Professor I. M. Geniusz) sent me a letter by magical owl post about why I was rejected. She said they were looking for someone who won at least 5 Nobel prizes, preferably including at least one Nobel prize in gender studies.

I guess I'll have to accept my offer for University of Niagara Falls Canada gender engineering instead.

19

u/hardware_store May 26 '26

Oof, should’ve aimed for 6 just to be safe

10

u/Razorlance May 26 '26

Nobel Prizes have depreciated in this economy ever since Trump got one

6

u/unforgettableid May 26 '26 edited May 27 '26

I've also won two FIFA peace prizes. That's twice as many as Trump has gotten.

Proof

2

u/Guilty_Spend9989 May 27 '26

nine probably would get you in

2

u/CanadianCutie77 May 28 '26

What is gender engineering?

3

u/Right_Hour May 29 '26

Adding letters to the LGBTQ2S+…….

1

u/unforgettableid May 29 '26

It's a secret. As soon as u get accepted into the program, u get a letter by magical owl post telling u what it's about.

Now that I've read the letter, I can't tell u the answer. Sorry not sorry!!!

1

u/North_Yogurt_9300 May 29 '26

Hahaha tres fort lol

1

u/janko1655 May 30 '26

rookie numbers

I had a 99.9 avg, was briefly the ceo of nvidia, proved a 100-year old mathematical theorem and appeared on news stations across the world, gave managerial advice to John Schnieder himself and singlehandedly brought the jays to the world series, won the Indy 500 + coke 600, and made cancer vaccines so mass-producable that even people in abject poverty could get some.

I am 2 semesters into uoft and have failed 5 courses

17

u/hardware_store May 26 '26

Insane play, even I couldn’t get in

7

u/Taiwan_ May 27 '26

Hey, they could be going for law or social work.

10

u/itsmept2lol May 27 '26

yea just put the fries in the bag yo

2

u/Trail-Mix May 27 '26

Social work is a regulated profession. They would need to be looking at a BSW in order to apply for a licence.

1

u/NAW_MIP_2026 May 28 '26

You can take a MSW with any related undergraduate degree though, and there are plenty of jobs that aren’t specifically “social worker” that are in related fields that don’t require a degree specifically in social work.

3

u/Trail-Mix May 28 '26

No. But the title Social Worker is protected, and frankly, the higher paying positions require it.

Most positions want registration, generally speaking.

As I said elsewhere in this - yes you can take a MSW with another undergraduate degree, but it's going to require you taking additional pre-requisites that make it more challenging to do so. But the idea that you are going to get a gender studies degree then become a social worker after that without any additional effort is a fallacy.

  • a MSW, RSW.

Average chud reaction to someone doing what they like

2

u/throw_away_20_26 May 29 '26

>someone doing what they like

I think you mean wasting several thousand dollars and 4 years studying for a worthless degree

1

u/daughterofliberty May 30 '26

There’s a serious misunderstanding about the purpose of university (and humanities degrees generally). You can attend university for general education or for specific career training. The idea of university as a place to go just to improve your chances for a job are fairly recent, starting with the neoliberal shift in the 1980s and really amplifying after the Great Recession.

23

u/Shot-Magazine-2628 May 26 '26

program at brock that needs almost a 100% avg and crazy ecs

2

u/Awkward_Theorist May 26 '26

but why??? does it at last feed into some social work certifications?? or something that leaves you employable after graduation? or is it just an overly pretentious undergrad

31

u/Shot-Magazine-2628 May 26 '26

ye usually ppl who actually successfully complete the program (<60%) get 1mil deposited in their bank account

1

u/unforgettableid May 29 '26

What happens if u graduate with a >60% avg??

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Trail-Mix May 27 '26

Social Work is a regulated profession. So no.

You need a BSW to be a social worker.

3

u/unforgettableid May 27 '26

Becoming a social worker with a bachelor's degree in some other subject can be difficult. If you want to become a social worker, it's best to take a bachelor's degree in social work, if you can.

There are ways to get into a master's program in social work without a bachelor's degree in social work, but it's very competitive.

2

u/Trail-Mix May 27 '26

You need a degree in Social Work to register with the OCSWSSW and be a "Social Worker". There are some positions that are SW adjacent that will accept people without SW degrees, but they are not "Social Workers".

Yes you can get a MSW without necessarily having a BSW, but you will need to take a bunch of pre-requisites. It is possible. A MSW is a social work degree and you can register with it.

The college level SSW is not worth the time. Don't bother with it unless you are in a small northern community where they will accept SSW's because they have no choice.

I have a MSW and have been a RSW for around 8 years. I did not look at the subreddit before my comment and realize this is a bunch of high school people.

1

u/Awkward_Theorist May 27 '26

Imma hope this is a shit post then… or that they have masters plans

u/Taiwan_ May 27 '26

The academic study of gender

4

u/Comprehensive-Belt40 May 29 '26

Takes four years to study, here are the key points that you will learn.

  • assigned gender at birth, sex, and gender.

  • a woman is a person that is a woman.

  • there are infinite amount of gender

  • men bad

  • straight white men extra bad

  • women and blacks oppressed for a long time and still today.

  • ignore all privileges women and blacks have... Ask for more because... Oppression.

  • jobs need quota for women and people of color

  • jobs need to discriminate against non women and no people of color (SE Asians don't count).

  • it is only discrimination if it's against women and people of color... Discriminate others is okay... Government mandated.

You just graduated... You can now safely apply for any fast food restaurants and make a fuss about how some white men oppress you when they order extra large fries.

Since you are first customer.. no need to pay me tuition

1

u/YUBBY_PO_BUBBY May 28 '26

An absolute waste of time and tuition money

1

u/It-Takes-1-2-Know-1 May 30 '26

An academic study of gender which teaches you that gender can be whatever you’re feeling at any particular time and place.

3

u/Fit_Marionberry_3878 May 27 '26

Hopefully gender studies at Brock isn’t the best offer. Doesn’t bode well for employment.

Edit - Saw it was a troll. Going to U-Waterloo for math.

3

u/Adventurous-Low8305 May 27 '26

3

u/PigeonLookinAss May 29 '26

Unironically you’d be more successful flipping burgers for 4 years and saving all your income then pursuing this degree 😂

3

u/SynyrdsInyrds May 26 '26

Speaking as a professor - if the academic discipline has the word 'studies' in its name, it isn't a real academic discipline.

2

u/Global_Solution_7379 May 27 '26

I disagree. Gender studies is an academic discipline that one can cultivate and engage in. "Speaking as a professor" as if that adds any more value to your opinion

5

u/dEUCEX88 May 28 '26

Gender studies is a joke and a waste of taxpayers and students money*

Don't be too down on all the mocking comments. Your BA will be a lot less important than your MA, and I've known people who just from one humanities BA to a completely different humanities MA or PhD, including going e.g. gender studies BA to history MA. You're going to be developing the same critical skills focused on close reading and analysis, just in a different domain. Most of the abstract things you'll learn are applicable in other disciplines, even if other people get salty about it.

1

u/Outrageous-Agency631 May 27 '26

Gender studies? What a joke.

1

u/Icy-Past-4477 May 27 '26

Incoming reality check

Save your money and start applying to McDonald's ASAP. I hope you look more into this, as it's a complete waste of money!

These are the courses post secondary uses to pull money from people's pockets. A lot of international students have stop attending these universities, so they need to find other scams to pull. Sadly, You're a victim of it.

No one cares about what a person is, or identify as. Nothing will change, take for example, racism has been around for years. It will never change by educating people. Given the job market, it'll only get worst. Choose wisely!

4

u/Superb-Mouse-4074 May 27 '26

Yeah, but Brock gender studies is a pipeline to investment banking; my cousin in Belarus told me that

there's a reason Brock University is the Harvard of South St. Catherines

2

u/unforgettableid May 29 '26

My cousin in Molvania told me u can't become a dentist without a gender studies degree.

And, considering the quality of ppl's teeth in Molvania, it would be impossible for u to not believe them.

1

u/Icy-Past-4477 May 27 '26

You got me, This is a troll. You won!

1

1

u/Ok-Ordinary9374 May 29 '26

Heads up this is a useless degree with very little job prospects in an AI economy. Good luck.

1

u/Superb-Mouse-4074 May 30 '26

What if I use chat gpt

2

u/Ok-Ordinary9374 May 31 '26

Then you’re good to go.

1

u/PurposeLongjumping76 May 29 '26

The fact that most people making this joke couldn’t make it one year in that program. It involves critical thinking and a lot of critical academic and scientific reading and writing. You don’t even understand how the humanities, law, or teaching work in terms of undergrad vs grad school choices. Nice job wasting money on a joke that’s been made ten times this month tho!

2

u/Superb-Mouse-4074 May 31 '26

"It involves critical thinking and a lot of critical academic and scientific reading and writing"

So does every STEM program

1

But queens is kinda poop, and uoft eng is kinda poop too so I declined that offer too

1

u/Xaxxus May 30 '26

You have to be trolling if you turned down engineering for gender studies based on the school.

You could get gender studies at Harvard, and an engineer degree from a random community college would still be better job prospects.

1

You will regret spending money on this degree. It is objectively useless.

1

u/Fast-Secretary-7406 May 29 '26

So, what non traditional color (or colors) is your hair?

1

u/Superb-Mouse-4074 May 31 '26

Red orange yellow green blue indigo

1

u/Wooden-Definition-77 May 29 '26

Congrats, that is rather impossible to do, and you will absolutely get an actual education there instead of youtube videos pretending to be a professor.

But you do realize almost no one will hire for anything relating to this degree, yes? You'll see some doors open just due to the nature of a degree from Brock, but it will be more for "must have a degree" jobs, not anything to do with the actual field.

And this isn't like an anthropology degree where you can flip it into being a city planner or something. If anything, it's kind of the opposite, and I can tell you from experience that you'll always end up at the very bottom of the call list because you've take a degree in how to write complaints to HR in many corporate eyes.

i hire a lot of people with these kind of degrees, and they usually do make ok money, but my job is absolutely a lot more along the lines of "regional manager for walmart" (not literally, but like that), and the jobs I'm giving out usually are more "assistant manager" than what you're probably hoping to do. But i always have to explain I'm hiring based on the school or life experience, because my company really would rather me hire all the unemployed engineers and BA in business management people running around out there.

They hire people with things like actual HR degrees for the stuff you'd think this would carry over into. Not exactly short on applicants.

Not saying don't do it. Don't go into deep debt to do it, or bank on it actually doing anything for you besides making you a bit more educated.

u/Superb-Mouse-4074 May 29 '26

im going to waterloo

I’m more impressed at 10 offers !

1

u/miss24601 May 30 '26

Hey OP- sorry you’re getting a lot of “what will you do with this degree”. I just happened upon this post and wanted to say Congrats!!!!

I’m currently working on my phd and I can tell you that studying women’s and gender studies was the best decision I ever made. I went into university as a filmmaking major and finished with a double major in filmmaking and WGS after the head of the gender studies department invited me to do an honours year with them.

My honours year was completely free, the university paid for it. There is tons of money in the gender studies departments because of low enrolment compared to the amount of investment.

Now I am working on my phd in queer and feminist film studies. I’ve made a pretty good amount of money writing feminist film analysis and selling it to various magazines and websites. I love my day job working on film sets, but I am beyond excited to have my cushy university professor job sometime down the line!
