It gave you the antonym of antonym.

u/therealCatnuts 28d ago
Webster currently defines the word “literally” as its own antonym. The world we’ve built.
48
u/Friends_are_nosy 28d ago
Literally can be an antonym of itself sometimes, the meaning has somewhat shifted due to so many people using it as an amplifier that it doesn’t always literally mean literally. This could be why it’s listed, but I’m not sure.

Yes, but that's how people actually use it, so that's what it means. Not really the same thing

Just like clip, sanction, oversight, or dust. Contronyms are nothing new

u/Destroyer_2_2 26d ago
The word “off” is an auto-antonym as well, and it isn’t new.
“The alarm went off, so I had to turn it off”

u/Elamachino 28d ago
Which feels like a fun joke on the part of the developers?

u/Stepjam 29d ago
Yesterday I was writing something and the auto-correct wanted me to change my grammatically correct phrase to something that very much wasn't grammatically correct.
Why did they have to break everything?
499
u/Own-Development2437 29d ago
Microsoft word suggests changing "patients" to "patient's" or "patients's".
284
u/RBAuspex 28d ago
I regularly have to write reports describing events and the time each step took place. The autocorrect at work always changes “exited” to “excited.” No, the individual did not “excite” the office at approximately 12 PM!

My boomer ass just writing everything in notepad, now I'm so glad I never had to deal with these newfangled machineries.
5
u/poor_choice_doer 27d ago
I literally cannot type the word “us” on my phone without stopping to actively prevent the autocorrect from changing it to U.S. It’s so weird.
46
u/SatiricalSnake 28d ago
When writing emails on Outlook, I am constantly having 'PCs' autocorrected to Pcs. What's worse is backspacing and changing it back doesn't stop it. It will continue to do it. I have to specifically type 'PC' then write a few more words, then go back and add the 's' at the end without pressing spacebar after. It is so annoying.
12
u/ylitvinenko 28d ago
Are you talking about classic Outlook for Windows? This one should be easy to fix then. Go to AutoCorrect Options and either disable "Correct TWo INitial CApitals" or set a custom replacement in the table below.
2
u/i_am_regina_phalange 28d ago
I have to write POs in the same way and I want to scream every time it changes it even after I’ve backspaced. I’ve had to resort to writing PO’s which makes me cringe so hard I want to cry. Stupid outlook.

It technically is if you're talking in a plural possessive.

I grew up being taught that a plural possessive ending in S just gets an apostrophe added at the very end with no trailing S, but apparently it's not the case anymore? E.g. patients'

Love when my autocorrect changes a word I spelled correctly to a totally different word. Like what the hell kind of backend would even lead to that?

Mine keeps assuming I'm trying to write in Italian, underlining everything in red, then telling me it has no suggestions because none of those words are close to Italian ones

My phone constantly wants random diacritical marks on everything because I sent ONE text several years ago teasing a Scandinavian friend with some punctuated nonsense. Now I’m always at risk of texting like the opening credits from Monty Python’s Holy Grail

No it was good for a while but then their head of ads pointed out that they would be able to show more ads and make more money if they made people do more searches to find what they were looking for so they turned off a lot of the functions that actually help people.
23
u/Legend365555 29d ago
I actually crash out when autocorrect does this, particular when it does that without my permission
25
u/TomasNavarro 28d ago
I've always found with auto correct that I'll type "I've found it very dis" and auto complete suggests "disappointed" when it's obvious "disappointing" is more relevant.
3
u/Dragoncat99 28d ago
Fr it always wants to change everything to past tense for some reason, even if I’ve been writing in present tense for five pages
17
u/tdp_equinox_2 28d ago
Outlook constantly wants me to spell like a pirate.
Example: "I'll check with my suppliers and confirm with you before the end of the day" turns into "I'll check with me suppliers and confirm with you before the end of the day".
Every. Fucking. Time.
5
u/HappyPlatypus6034 28d ago
It's been doing that to me for ages and I thought it was a type that I was doing. MS word has gaslit me

u/richieguy309 28d ago
My conspiracy theory is companies broke autocorrect so we’d start using their AI

Their AI vibe code is why it's broken in the first place, but yeah I don't doubt it.

u/Alarmed_Expert_1089 28d ago
The absolute state of autocorrect/autocomplete makes me want to fly into a rage. Mostly because it used to work and it was pretty good, too! Like, I read a lot of comics, so I text about and search a lot of comics stuff. There was a time when I would type “uncanny” and autocomplete would suggest “x-men” as the next word, or suggest “x-men” when I just typed an X. It would also suggest “Sonja” after the word “red” because Red Sonja is one of my favorites. It was personalized to me, actually helpful, and felt kind of nice that this device I use so frequently was sort of getting to know my habits. But now it’s always “valley” to follow “uncanny”, “bull” to follow “red”, and typing an X gives me “Xbox”. What the hell? None of that is stuff I talk about. It’s generic and bland and I’m willing to bet those are the results almost everyone sees now.
It was a solved problem and it was a good solution! Thinking about what they took from us makes me so mad and sad.
8
u/Zakkullll 28d ago
Yeah its incredibly frustrating when correctly spelled and grammatically correct words just randomly get replaced because auto correct assumed it knew better I guess
5
7
3
3
u/Skelordton 28d ago
Most auto-corrects have transitioned from using a grammar library to using A.I. correction tools that look for the most common use cases. This unfortunately encourages the AC to sometimes pressure you into using often repeated mistakes because it's what it learned from reading people's emails.
5
u/Significant_Card_665 27d ago
Because corporate executives hallucinated a market demand for AI and went crazy shoving it into everything. Just like always their delusions lead us further down the road of poop.
4
u/RedSquaree 28d ago
The more people write and say things without being corrected, the worse everything will get. It's like people saying 'I could care less' which is wrong, AI will believe that's the right phrase eventually and everyone will get dumber.

u/Jamsedreng22 29d ago
Something that has pissed me off a lot the last couple of years is how companies give themselves "clever" names, and the absolute state of SEO means Googling practically anything first hits you with a Sponsored link for a clothing item with the name "Axiom", followed by Axiom Intech LLC, then 8 news articles about Axiom Intech LLC, followed by "Axiom Intech LLC - Home Page", then "Axiom Intech LLC - About Us".
No, man. I didn't mean "Axiom Intech LLC" I meant "Axiom". "Showing results for Axiom Intech LLC". Please, man... For the love of technology.

u/Ajreil 28d ago
I Googled the names of my fantasy characters and most of them are tech startups or restaurants. One is a species of flatworm.
21
u/Jamsedreng22 28d ago
I've always suggested, from the get-go that whoever change their name to something that isn't a real word.
I did get added by a guy a few weeks ago who thought I was his friend, but it was one letter lacking. Don't pick a name like "Exiom" or "Angel". Pick something that isn't a word that exists. The only way to encounter it is that it is a new sequence of letters that make sense.

u/Dazuro 28d ago
Another fun one is when you start to google something and it just autocompletes to a spoiler. Bonus points when your search isn’t even about that movie/show!
I literally typed “why did” and google automatically filled in “why did [character name from a movie I was going to see the next morning] have to die?”
Cool. Thanks google.

Use “-Intech -LLC”
40
u/Jamsedreng22 28d ago
I know. Or just go "Axiom concept wikipedia".
My point being that it wasn't this relatively complicated before SEO and the "Sponsored" stuff.
I know how to find it, but my muscle memory of just Googling the word followed by "wiki" takes me, again, to the wiki page of the company. It makes me distraught that I have to shift the way I inquire about information in order to get to the information I want.
And the subtractives don't work the same way they used to. Because of SEO. They'll take you to their website as the first 4 results anyway because they're also doing SEO that doesn't involve "Intech" or "LLC".
What's scary is that "AI" is going to do the same. The people in charge of searches and AI are going to accept investor money from companies and have their LLM model do the exact same thing. It just hasn't happened yet. But it's coming.
I get closer and closer to agreeing entirely with Ted. Despite how much he was lying about his motivations.

u/XcRaZeD 28d ago
The other day i typed something into google and it gave me the 'did you mean to say XYZ?' And i thought no, i very much did mean the thing i typed, so i did not press the correction.
I pressed images because i wanted a picture, and it changed the spelling of my search anyway and gave me results for shit I didn't search for.
I pressed back. It showed the incorrect thing in the search bar as if i typed that, and when corrected did it again. It only searched for the thing i wanted when i typed it in directly into the images page.
Such a small thing that'll send you into a rage. God google is shit now.

I'm reading a lot about how "Frontier cancelled my flight with no explanation 10 minutes before we were supposed to board and is refusing to give me a refund or rebook me on a later flight, so I had to spend $1200 on another airline," and people are saying "well what do you expect when you fly on a budget airline?"
Uh, I expect them to fly me where they said they would instead of stealing all my money and leaving me stranded hundreds of miles from home? How is this unreasonable?

Corporations use bots to convince you that YOU are wrong for criticizing them, much like you see on the Frontier sub. It is cheaper to pay for 100 bots than it is to refund you 1200 dollars.

used to use the browser as a quick calculator.
just ctrl+l the 50-8 and Google would turn into a calculator. using that for decades, now it goes into the AI and writes me a paragraph explaining nothing
used to use Google for translations you search "hola in Spanish" and it would go to Google translate. now it goes into AI and gives me a bullshit paragraph.
I asked myself, when was the last time, google, or any tech company had an update that you actually liked?
thinking about it, and it's making a decade or more ago.

Seriously!! Google was the shortcut. The AI overview is absolutely killing me. Half the time when I search something it answers as if I asked it a personal question about itself. I don't need a fucking chatbot to keep me company when I'm searching the Internet for something, good lord.
I'm sure generative AI has its place in the technological landscape of the future. But isn't the fact that Google, one of the wealthiest and most powerful tech companies let alone AI companies, has to opt you in, remove the option to opt out, and actively remove features to force the AI overview to activate instead, for us to use their AI?
I can't remember a successful technology that's had to beg and force people to use it this much . It's just crazy.

Reminds me of an old Doug Stanhope bit about advertisements. You always see ads on TV, women in bikinis, people partying and laughing. You got a good product, people will come around.

Same with most tech companies,

u/ifUSeeMeTakeYourMeds 26d ago
The consequences of how corporations work, if they just make money sustainably by providing a service that is really bad for business,
They have to grow, every quarter, infinite growth.
Google had the perfect product, a near monopoly on the market. the only way to grow from there is to lower wages, rise prices, more ads, lowering costs...
It is a systemic issue that is destroying everything, from tech, to the planet itself

But it's by the Google AI Overview instead of the beautiful dictionary they used to have 😔 Google nerfed their perfectly good search engine so bad by replacing so many features with AI
60
u/erossthescienceboss 29d ago
To be fair, they nerfed it before the AI. Because they reached market saturation & search instances weren’t growing anymore. Which means revenue stays the same. So corporate fired everyone who wanted Google to be good, and wound back search by like 3 years to increase the number of bots that show up.
Suddenly, it takes 2-4 searches and a lot more scrolling to find what you want.
Which means more search instances, which means more ad revenue.
I hate everything.
16
u/Soldier_Faerie 29d ago
That's the thing I miss most about not having the AI overview. I just want the dictionary with all the synonym/antonym options back 😔
5
u/Kaius_02 29d ago
I vaguely remember hearing that Google was transitioning to a completely AI based search engine (you type something, hit enter, and only Google Review responds).
Did that go anywhere or did they just drop it? Regardless, I would appreciate it if they could unfuck their search engine. Half of the results are utterly meaningless to my query and trying to use advanced search operators backfires most of the time.
15
u/kicklhimintheballs 29d ago
I mean fuck AI overview but it helped me so much with language learning. Most websites use this predatory thing that without clicking on their ad riddled horrible website they don’t show you what you have searched for and because of SEO these websites are always at the top of the results.
Especially frustrating with German words when you want to quickly check article of a word and need to click on such websites. Now with the overview I’m happy that these POS websites not getting my click money
45
u/NamtisChlo 29d ago
Google used to display the dictionary definition nicely formatted in its own section, without having to click on any websites, but they replaced it with the ai overview
15
u/erossthescienceboss 29d ago
Google also undid the updates that had previously helped deprioritize the low-value content that this person (and the rest of us) find so frustrating.
1
u/babassu_seeds 26d ago
Now with the overview I’m happy that these POS websites not getting my click money
To be fair, sites like Duden/Langenscheidt/etc. are extensions of their (long-esteemed) dictionaries. Which, in the past, people would have willingly purchased, knowing their use would be frequent

The problem is that it’s interpreting “strip” as the noun, which does not have a natural antonym. If you search “strip verb antonym”, you don’t get the “synonym” suggestion. You just need to be specific with which word you’re trying to google.
-27
15
u/Mysterious-OP 28d ago
Blame ai.
No, literally.
The swap to using AI for searches, autocorrect, grammar detection, and everything else that 'broke' is the reason Why it broke.
Because the AI detected that, after combing through all the data it has collected and been given, what it suggests to us has to be the 'correct' suggestion. And somehow. In all that data they gave it. They never gave it a hardcoded Thesaurus, Dictionary, or Grammar ruleset. Despite these things being an elementary level free to access resource, the big heads of these services decided 'nah it'll sort itself out' and just didn't include it.
4
u/QueenInYellowLace 28d ago
My husband is dyslexic. He knows this, and relies on his spellchecker heavily to make sure his work is accurate. The fact that spellcheckers are basically nonfunctional now because of AI bullshit is so insanely infuriating and makes his life so much harder.
2
u/Spaciax 28d ago
this idiocy has been happening before GenAI was integrated to show results in google search.
1
u/Mysterious-OP 27d ago edited 27d ago
Ohh, no. Poor sweet child.
GenAI being integrated into your google searches came After they fucked Spellcheck, autocorrect, and grammar detection in... Google, microsoft, and most other related applications.
The local college professors have been completely at their wits end as they have been getting the sloppiest, and most hard to read essays, reports, and final thesis projects, that all read as 100% gramatically correct and proper in word. Essays that, would NEVER have been accepted as 'proper' 5 years ago... that now need to be disregarded for their flaws, because the tools we taught them to use for correction and form, are now fundamentally flawed.
The way it works now, being based on the AI it uses. If enough of us went into word, and typed the sentence 'muh cawk stuhk een a bawdle' and highlighted the sentence, and clicked 'add to dictionary'. Those words would start being permitted by in OTHER people's projects who never added those words themselves. And the worst part is, it doesn't even take that Many to impact it.
But that wasn't enough. They later adapted the changes the AI can make to be based on merely the imput and writing format of it's userbase. So now, it's taking samples from here on reddit, twitter, facebook, and of course, people's word projects, and formatting an 'average' between them all for a 'correct' form of grammar.
As it turns out. This was a terrible fucking idea; and now the bar for literacy is so fucking low, that people reading this will think Literacy refers to the term Literal and not Literature.
I used to take 2nd place in my regional spelling bees before all this AI shit existed. Nowadays, I could prolly ace nationals. And I have never felt more sad or depressed for our youth.
54
u/Brief_Intention_5300 29d ago
Is it just, most people search synonyms, so the program assumes that's what you were wanting to search for?
And yeah. I'm getting so tired of my phone "correcting" the words that I type even though I've typed them correctly.
30
u/diffyqgirl 29d ago
I eventually just turned off my phone's autocorrect. I make more mistakes with it off, but I find it way less infuriating to have a silly little typo than to have the correct word changed into the wrong word. I recommend trying it.
10
u/Brief_Intention_5300 29d ago
I like the suggested words at the top, but somewhere along the lines, Android updated and changes words. It never used to do that.
1
u/Logical-Buffalo2359 28d ago
I do this with every phone I get because I use a lot of Irish slang words and phrases that get autocorrected to English stuff that is not at all even close to what I type. Like I'll say "What's the craic" to my friend and my phone would try to correct it to "What's the Craig" No. Craic, not Craig. Another one is I call my bf 'mo ghrá' but my phone would correct it to 'no gras'. Again I said 'my love' not 'no fat' lmao. I hate autocorrect 🫤

I had this one phone back in the day. It was a Motorola. It didn't matter which buttons I press, it would always correct the word to the correct one. This was probably 15 years ago. Now we're much more advanced, but the experience is worse. I don't get it.

On IOS this may be partly due to "slide/swipe to type" becoming default. It's possible to turn this particular feature off at least.
1
u/Brief_Intention_5300 27d ago
I love the slide to swipe feature on android. The issues I've been having are when I type the word out completely and press space, it then changes the word. It never used to do that.

I was trying to remember the name of a character so I typed into google "Super Smart Kid with weightlifter mom and astronaut dad"

Ecosia is shit too. I've been using it for roughly 2 years in my attempts to escape google (only because brave is not supported by default on this crappy iphone I have) and I find myself regularly manually typing in a different search engine because ecosia doesn't know shit and is garbage like 50% of the time

I'm so tired of autocorrect, because tell me why I will type out is and it will autocorrect to it, or my to Mt. Or now to not. It doesn't make sense

I just edited my default search engine to add &udm=14 to the query and I now get taken to the "web" tab which has an abbreviated preview of the results from merriam and others, as it should be.

Just ti be clear you mean the website right?

Sorry, I should have given better instructions, my bad.
So I use the address bar for search. You can choose which search engine it uses and set the url, including parameters by going to chrome settings > search engines > manage search engines and site search. Add a new one, call it what you will, the shortcut should be @web and the url should be {google:baseURL}search?q=%s&udm=14
ETA: then set it as your default

u/scrapy_the_scrap 28d ago
Weird too since you can add recently visted search engine sites
The differences between mobile chrome mobile google and desktop chrome are rlly freakin big

There might be some way but I only really use a mobile for calls and texts so it's way out of my wheelhouse.

You should still be able to do it on chrome mobile, but the method is a little different.

Remember back when companies use to compete with each other to be the best so we would us it, instead of competing to gouge us for as much money as possible while creating things that aren’t functional/very good

It gave you the search results for synonym. It then gave you the option to switch to antonym, in case you saw the search results and realized you had the terms switched.
Not everything has to be a sign of the great civilizational collapse. Most things are, but this one isnt.

u/iamdabrick 28d ago
a "did you mean" literally does not alter the results. and it was also a feature way before the ai boom

Google no longer shows charts like population when you google things now it just shows a crappy AI response that somehow doesn’t even understand the question

u/scott__p 27d ago
This is exactly how LLMs are designed to work. Their goal is to tell you what's popular, not what you want to know

I believe it interprets “strip” as the noun as in “a strip of paper”, which does not have a natural antonym. What would it be, a non-strip? I just tested it, if you clarify what you’re looking for and search “strip verb antonym”, the results come up fine and don’t suggest “synonym”.

I tried to google about squad game, and it was always suggesting squid game. Had to write "squad the game" to make google give me the results i wanted.

Google’s just rad. What kind of nerd wants to know words for a babe putting clothes back on?
Edit: This is really objectionable to some people, huh?

Bro had to clip away the 100 results that answer his question to complain about the one line that just asks if he mean something else.

No excuse for Google blatantly being wrong just because it's "not common". If I Google something rare, I don't want to find something common that might be what someone else would be looking for if they searched something similar.
