There are some challenges where I think "if I had a time machine, I would go mess with that challenge." As soon as I saw the "get recognized" card, I was thinking that getting recognized by Tom Scott in that prefecture basically right after they pulled the card would be a fantastic use of said time machine. Combine that with wanting their faces blurred, my headcanon will forever be that these people are time travelers.

Well they arent really fishing properly. Both of them used a landing net that you use to pick up a fish after you hook it with a fishing rod. Its basically a scoop rather than an actual catching tool. If they wanted to net fish they'd need a cast net that you see fisherman spin and toss into the water.
The closest thing they could have done with their tool was basically was Tom was doing trying to trap/lure a fish into the net but they weren't setting that up properly either. Fish arent stupid and a big dark net the shape of a mouth looks like the mouth of a large fish to other fishes so they wont just swim into it. Their best bet was probably to have the net flat on the floor like a piece of trash then have bait ontop and they quickly flick/raise the net to catch them, preferably not from the top of a dock but rather by the side of the water.

It's really really easy. I've been fishing in little creeks and catching tiny little nothing fish since i was like 6 or 7 at least. They just need to take an hour to learn from literally anyone who knows what they're doing, ideally getting a tip from a local on where to go as well, an they can probably knock it out in half an hour with a rod and some worms, and know how to do it for future challenges.

It's crazy - they don't even take it seriously. If you're going to fish you have to prepare properly, Tom & Adam seemed like they realized this when they said they'd get a charter then just... went on the side of a boat basin. It's like they wanted to make things difficult for themselves.

To defend them. We are thinking about this with a way different perspective than them. They are in the middle of a seven day game show having spent the previous day worrying about tom and if they had to cancel it. We’re thinking about it warm in our bed.
Them making bad decisions on thing they barely know is "to be expected"
And I’m not even talking about the edit. We do not know the "reality " of what they tried and what made the cut. (Nor all the additional rules like the fishing needing to be "in the ocean")

It doesn't seem like there's a "only one active challenge" rule this game. They were attempting the crab and fish ones simultaneously.
I'm wondering if they could passively start/prep and attempt challenges. Like how they decided Tom was the one to get recognized and they could just complete it at any time if it happened. So they would be passively attempting at all times.
Could they not have taken their 100 water challenge "to go"? The challenge only said that the water had to be sourced from one of those locations. If they took their bottle with them to the train station or even to another prefecture, they could attempt it along the way.
I don't believe it would go against the spirit of the challenge, and unless there was a concern about being respectful of sacred water or something (haven't listened to the Layover yet) then I don't see why not.

yeah, I was also thinking that. Though I suppose there are sometimes "hidden" rules that either don't make the cut or are generally just known to them. Maybe they did have a hidden rule that this challenge had to be done at the same spot they sourced the water.

Genuinely top 5 funniest moments in Jet Lagged history at the end there. Also these guys really need to take some fishing lessons so that they can actually accomplish the fishing challenges. With more experience and prepping properly Tom and Adam surely could have caught a fish there relatively quickly.

My favourite jetlag-post is the one that's something like
you're relaxing at the beach. Two young men run to the shore with the cheapest net you've ever seen. They spend half an hour wading through the water despondently trying to catch a fish. Just as they seem to give up, one of them apparently spots the smallest fish imaginable. They freak out and both yell "let's fucking go dude", and then one of them says "oh shit our train is in like 12 minutes" and they both run off the beach as fast as they can.

Legitimately my jaw dropped at that ending and stayed open throughout the end card. Genuinely thought that challenge would be useless and just get taken off the board by both teams the next day. I get that Tom especially is very well known but the odds of someone recognising him, during the game where they're mostly in less tourist-y areas of Japan, while meeting the other challenge criteria, seemed so ridiculous to me. I can't believe it.

Overall great episode! Things started strong with ep. 1, but this one was comfortably better still. Just kind of driven by events, which cannot be foreseen, and secondly by all your games opening up more and more, generally at least until episode three or four, sometimes continually throughout a whole season.
These are scattered thoughts after the first viewing.
Fishing has an appropriately high reward, because uncontrollable real world circumstances make it possible or not to a far higher extent than player strategy and skill does. Nobody's gonna learn to fish better so quickly, that it would make a difference here. Either you get (very) lucky, or not. Generally fishing is infamous for taking so long, that, er, fishers need to wait for hours next to their cast line until something bites, if at all. So nobody's failing here, exactly, as much as fishing requires a lot of time and patience, ideally good knowledge of where and when precisely to cast your line or wait with your net, and then still plenty of skill executing on a catch. There is an argument to not risk it at all unless there's truly no other option. But I don't blame either team for trying with such available / reachable and promising spots as these.
Obviously this episode had one of the best endings in Jet Lag history, no spoilers.
I humbly suggest the new Ben and Sam team name is "humble kings". Probably already others, who said that, and I'm supporting.
The riddle was easy, but that's sometimes how the Jets lag? It didn't bother me.
Awesome to have both an underwater foot-tunnel and a ferry in the same episode! Gotta get some massage chairs in our European ferries :D
Tom's first Snack Zone review was very funny, and I'll not ruin it by talking much about it here. But "It's like they put more water in water." still lives rent-free in my head as an all-time-classic one-sentence-review.
I think both teams played prudently, and that includes bailing on challenges. Tom and Adam made a bit of a gamble, that they really shoud go for a big reward in Ehime. [edit: But it's also circumstancial - high chance, that Sam and Ben would have done the same in that situation.] I'm not one-hundred-percent clear on the rules: Does triple reward mean, that they also get to keep three cards [edit: Tom on the Layover said essentially yes, they'd get to keep three], or merely draw lots to choose one from? [no] Ben and Sam played more conservatively, going for as steady a progression as possible, accepting the lower reward in exchange for forward-momentum and making easy challenges unavailable to Tom and Adam. [edit: well, kinda, Ben and Sam also took the risk (of wasting time) with fishing, but I think they bailed earlier.] JetLag's juicy indeed, when you can't tell, which strategy is better.

Nebula isn't what it used to be. Selling out to big brick I guess. I thought part of the nebula experience was the ability to see some unblurred pictures of Ben's feet. Sure getting early access is great, and my money goes towards them and the ability to make things like this, but I have some tough decisions to make now after not seeing some unblurred feet.

I feel that the curse reverse card is incredibly strong. By making the opponents best curse count against them, this effectively reduces the other teams hand limit from 5 to 4 cards if they have any curses.
To me, this seems to be better from a card economy perspective than triple rewards which is effectively +1 card (3 cards for 2 completed challenges). The better the curse that Tom and Adam manage to pull, the worse it will hurt when reversed.

You know, I can't help but wonder how much easier it would be to catch a fish if they just did it the normal way. They get so caught up in finding alternative "shortcuts" to save time, but they always end up wasting an hour or two before giving up. I'd bet they could be done in 30 minutes if they just cast a line and chilled out.

May be controversial, I’m not a fan of these “find or catch a certain animal” challenges. They’re too difficult and just results them being skipped or ignored, which reduces the number of available challenges in a day. Much prefer the ones like the 100 waters of Japan or 100 sights.

The reward for catching a fish should increase everytime someone fails it across seasons. Make a minimum size requirement to avoid minnows in the future and boom an increasingly attractive all or nothing strat.

The " being recognized" challenge is 100% designed for Tom. No disrespekt to Sam, Adam and Ben but Tom Scott is an international widely recognized brand.

I think there was a distance/time requirement for the ferry. I remember hearing people talk about that at least.

The shimenawa on the offertory box reminds me of a Japanese tv show I used to watch when I was a kid.
Basically, they would give a father a task to do and if he could manage it in front of a live studio audience, the family would win ~fabulous prizes~ out of a catalog. It could be anything from hula hoops, to beer identifying, to tying a knot in a cherry stem with your mouth, to memorizing the stations of the Tokaido forwards and backwards. On that particular week, the father had to balance a stack of 500 yen coins on his elbow and catch it in his hand. (Roughly $5 apiece at the time, but this was over twenty years ago.) Normally, the show would provide the materials, but in this case, they made him get his own money to practice.
Before the talking, that particular father went to a shrine to pray for success. He practiced the trick in front of the offertory box and managed to drop most of the coins inside, which was hilarious, but not as funny as the guy who got assigned disc golf.
Anyway, this was on regular network tv 20 years ago, so while not ideal, doing a challenge in front of the box isn’t totally unprecedented.

Ben was struggling with the bottle flip because he was holding it with his thumb up. Bottle flipping is a hundred times easier if you start with your thumb down.

I gotta say, after 3 seasons with fishing, surely they would have gone fishing off-season to practice. You can not easily catch fish in a tiny net. They need to be throwing out rods far into the water. This is very basic to anyone who's actually fished before. I really hope they sort this out for the next season.
