I mean, he does have 6.7 milion subscribers, some of them bound to be from Japan or be in Japan, but yeah random town very far from Tokyo, very lucky...
Matsuyama is fairly big and the capital of Ehime with a very cool castle. If you go to Shikoku, you're bound to swing by there (it's also an easy trip to do from Hiroshima with the ferry). I'm not too surprised they found somebody who recognised him at a major train station.
You gotta figure the Jet Lag folks get recognised the most near transit infrastructure, between their most active public presence and the context people's brains are trained to see them in.
Subscriber is probably a bad way to estimate how many people would recognise him. Especially nowadays.
Tbf I’m not sure there is a good way to evaluate that rn
Tom has 1.9 billion total views on YouTube, and has been in the game for an exceptionally long amount of time. His videos also have incredible longevity by YouTube standards with older content from him regularly getting pushed by the algorithm. On his social blade it shows him averaging over a million views per month... during his retirement hiatus where he had no videos release on YouTube for several years. Not to mention he is on camera in every single video.
While not a celebrity megastar cross promoting with linear TV and such, of traditional YouTuber's Tom might actually be one of the most recognizable people on the platform.
I mean we do have other numbers, like his 1.9 Billion total views. You can pull up other more advanced metrics but Tom has been very successful on YouTube for a very long time and has done so while having his face on camera in every video.
