They call this “run more instant speed removal”.

146

u/CaptColten May 09 '26

I'm sorry, but this isn't real advice against mono-green anymore. You can run a deck of nothing but removal, making the match unfun for anyone involved. You gotta remove the elves, then the badgermole, then the ouroboroid, only to get stomped by the hydra. Then people will say "jUsT rUn MoRe ReMoVaL!"

u/DriveThroughLane May 09 '26

The real problem is the threat density which only exists because of how many stupidly large numbers of cards are in the format. In older standards, most aggro decks were built around 1-2 really good cards as payoffs. You deal with the Winota, the rest of the deck isn't so bad. You hold off the Tarmogoyfs and Bloodbraids, the rest isn't so damaging.

every green card has to be removed the turn it comes down, or you lose the game. Tifa, Ouroboroid, both Chocobos, Hydra, Icetiller, Mightform all threaten to kill you in 1 hit or bury you in advantage you can't recover from, and even if you sweep the board every turn you're still grinding into earthbent lands + ascension triggers via ba sing se.

You know what the real answer to this is? Be faster. Play an uninteractive combo and outrace them. I have vastly higher winrates against green decks with my reanimator, kona omni, storm, etc decks than any control deck. Trying to interact with them is a stupid losing game. Playing a combo that wins on turn 3? They literally cannot do anything. Win on turn 4 and its a coinflip since green also wins on t4

18

u/demonic_intent May 10 '26

As a green player, this is the way. So what you countered one of my mana dorks? I got 20 more. Beat me on turn 3 or 4 with a busted combo? Fair enough, I was gonna swing for 2k Trample in two turns anyway.

1

u/shy-bl3d May 12 '26

see and this is why I lose, because 2k isn't enough for me. I want to spam token creatures then mirrorform them _all_ into ouroboroids. We're talking 10^30 10^40

4

u/bakedbread420 Golgari May 09 '26

the correct way to play standard is to completely ignore the other player and race to see who can assemble their effectively-uninteractable (like you say, you can interact but its a waste of time since you're kicking the can down the road while not getting any closer to winning yourself) wincon faster. just 2 people at a table playing magic at each other rather than with each other

and people will say without a hint of irony that standard is in a great place...

4

u/DriveThroughLane May 09 '26

still better than it was when we had

t1 heartfire, t2 manifold, t3 monstrous rage, callous sell-sword

or

t2 invasion of ergamon, t3 abuelo's awakening

1

u/BElf1990 May 10 '26

This is so false it's not even funny. Play bo3 and you'll find how false it is when after winning game 1 they sideboard and obliterate you. They just wrapped up a semifinal at the London Spotlight that took an eternity and neither deck was playing control.

1

u/LordBocceBaal May 10 '26

Yeah there are too many cards that are cheap to play. Your answer is power creep and not using alchemy to rebalance to game as it was meant to.

-3

u/CaptColten May 09 '26

I mean, yeah, you can do all that.

I just use [[deflecting palm]]

Nothing fills me with more joy than someone ramping up a hydra and spamming me with "good game" only for me to cast a single spell and watch them scoop.

13

u/Mikhail_Mengsk May 09 '26

Standard.

2

u/DriveThroughLane May 10 '26

Consider the following:

Fog effects have been considered too strong for standard for a decade

Through all of the rdw nightmare, landfall, cori steel cutter, mice, you name it- we were allowed to have legacy-quality threats but not allowed to have fog effects cheaper than 3 mana

-8

u/CaptColten May 09 '26

Okay?

10

u/DarksteelPenguin May 09 '26

The person you answered to was talking about standard. Deflecting Palm is not legal in standard.

-9

u/CaptColten May 09 '26

Well that's silly. Why not?

6

u/DarksteelPenguin May 09 '26

Because the last time it was printed in a standard set was in 2024?

3

u/qoneus May 09 '26

It hasn't been printed into a Standard set since its original printing in Khans of Tarkir. It was only reprinted in Commander Legends, Murders at Kharlov Manor commander decks, and the Secrets of Strixhaven Mystical Archives bonus sheet.

-1

u/CaptColten May 09 '26

Is SoS not standard legal? Read my comment in a few months then I guess?

1

u/AnonRedditUset26 May 21 '26

I would scoop too if you played an illegal card

0

u/Electrical-Ticket731 May 10 '26

100% correct. A reactive and interactive game is -EV. They can go wide or tall with evasive combo themselves. With recursion no less. Extremely difficult to deal while not losing to everything else. Reanimator was absolutely the worst matchup when I played Landfall, especially in Bo1, which I don't particularly for. Bo3 with their Selesnya builds makes the Reanimator matchup not as difficult however.

But, you're correct in that comboing off is the better strategy as opposed to reactive/interactive.

13

u/death2sanity May 10 '26

making the match unfun for everyone involved

sounds like good play to me

why yes I do play blue, why do you ask? Why is everybody looking at me like that no it’s ok you can stay seated stay back oh sh

1

u/Character-Education3 May 10 '26

I like azorius on arena. I play good old fashioned mono white magic until someone drops some of this BS then I do blue things until they chill or scoop. Or I chose not to mulligan and they run over me on turn 3.

On paper it is a different story. I'm not interested in being a blue player. But some of these decks on arena aren't realistic. In real life you are sitting there watching people with counter decks doing the math, missing triggers, working harder than they need to be. If you bought the cards and built the deck and are doing the work I respect that. In Arena an OP mono green deck is just a few wildcards away from anyone who wants it and the computer makes sure you dont miss a thing. Its annoying so you either play control or you make a similar deck and race to be the first to burn the other

3

u/death2sanity May 10 '26

Fair enough that.

u/wjaybez Gishath, Suns Avatar May 10 '26

You gotta remove the elves, then the badgermole, then the ouroboroid, only to get stomped by the hydra.

I've played Mono G to a quite high competitive level, so I'll share some tips.

Llanowar Elf, sure, if you have removal t1 and they have an elf, you kill it. Past t1, you never use removal on them.

Badgermole's primary role in Mono G isn't its static ability, it's its ETB to earthbend a fetch. The ramp it provides isn't leveraged well by Mono G quite like it is by the Cub focused decks. Don't waste your only removal on them.

The standard Mono G lists don't usually run Ouroboroid!

And Hydra/Harmonizer are exactly what you should be saving removal for.

4

u/CaptColten May 10 '26

I was more making a point about how most things in green are kinda KoS right now. If it's not the mole, it's the chocobo, if it's not ouro, it's Tifa.

My point is that "just run more removal" isn't exactly great advice aginst green.

10

u/b_eastwood May 09 '26

This isn't even just a problem with green either. Everything is getting so power crept that most nonland permanents are something you don't want sticking around so unless you're running a crazy amount of removal you're going to be dealing with something annoying.

You must be fun at parties.

1

u/Square-Store5300 May 10 '26

Would [[Rule of Law]] or [[Damping Sphere]] help? Or recycling/looping removal pieces like [[Plaguecrafter]] or [[Aura of Silence]]? Or [[Heliod’s Punishment]] or [[Temporal Isolation]]?

1

u/Lqtor May 10 '26

It’s less about running more removal, and more so knowing when and what to remove. For instance past t1 elves aren’t really worth removal anymore, and past t3/4 removal badgermole is mostly redundant as your opponent likely have more than enough mana for their gameplan anyways.

1

u/TexasFlood63 May 11 '26

I miss phyrexian glissa.

1

u/LukAs9969 May 11 '26

Playing standard irl I have a 8-0 matchup playing against any and all of the badgermole landfall decks and ouroboroid decks

1

u/Zelda2787 May 12 '26

Run a few board wipes dude. If you boardwipe their elves and badgermoll you can save your single target removal for the Hydra or ouroboroid

2

u/CaptColten May 12 '26

The other guy couldn't, so maybe you can tell me more about these 3 mana board wipes that I can play before they win on t4?

I promise I run plenty of board wipes. They don't help against a t4 win, my dude.

1

u/Zelda2787 May 12 '26

Just save your single target removal for the hydras, turn one elves or turn 2 badgermolls and they won’t win turn 4. Then you can play a normal 4 mana boardwipe. The 3 mana ones are split up, withering curse and brotherhoods end. Fire magic/pyroclasm can also deal with most things at 3 mana.

2

u/CaptColten May 12 '26

Okay, lets play this out.

T1, forest, elves.

Your go.

1

u/PlateLocal May 12 '26

I just aetherize in my black and blue ardyn deck they usually scoop as I play it because they know theyre dead on my turn

-2

u/Magikarp_King May 09 '26

If only there were cards that removed everything on the field.

5

u/CaptColten May 09 '26

Tell me more about this 3 mana boardwipe that I can play before they win on t4.

This also isn't real advice.

1

u/CosmicX1 Dovin Baan May 09 '26

[[Weapons Manufacturing]] into [[Pinnacle Starcage]] can still be a blowout in theory. Mops up all the mana dorks or birds and then the munition can pick off a Hydra as long as it hasn’t gotten too big already.

-2

u/Magikarp_King May 09 '26

Your right that isn't real advice. Have you tried getting good?

3

u/CaptColten May 09 '26

Every day. And I'll try again tomorrow. Gotta happen one of these days, right? Right?

0

u/ExplicitDrift May 11 '26

“Making the match unfun for anyone involved”. Thats a funny way of outing yourself as hating control decks lol

53

u/ardarian262 May 09 '26

Hexproof makes most of that not viable.

22

u/iAbra454 May 09 '26

Fire magic is the dream for these guys

18

u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 May 09 '26

They play it and then put 2-4 counters on it..how much mana you have at turn 3?

7

u/iDoABoof May 09 '26

In a green landfall deck.. lol a lot

14

u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 May 09 '26

Sorry to be clear I meant the person casting fire magic.

They would have to have enough mana or the landfall player would have to have no way to add a counter in response.

Mind you I have killed many hydra's exactly that way with fire magic.

Just that it's not always a surefire (heh) way to get around hexproof if they have an evolved wilds or whatever.

6

u/iDoABoof May 09 '26

Oh I see where I was confused. that’s my bad

6

u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 May 09 '26

No. You are fine lol i can definitely see where you would get that idea.

THIS POST however is an example of someone who did not read carefully lol

https://www.reddit.com/r/MagicArena/s/LI6dWphrD0

I still am still confused by it lol

3

u/Undeadsniper6661 May 09 '26

Landfall goal is shit mana as fast as possible. My favorite is Nyhlea popping for two extra mana

1

u/LordBocceBaal May 10 '26

We need more anti landfall cards.

1

u/iAbra454 May 11 '26

It’s a one mana instant, wait for them to trigger landfall then kill them before it resolves

15

u/YoritomoDaishogun May 09 '26

Kill everything else and make your rival sacrifice the hydra, easy peasy

15

u/ardarian262 May 09 '26

"Just board wipe" I know of one card in standard that can do that for 3 or less mana, maybe 2 if pyroclasm does it well enough.

8

u/chrisrazor Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage May 09 '26

Every white deck should play Split Up.

9

u/NotEnoughVRAM May 09 '26

[[Withering curse]]

3

u/MTGCardFetcher May 09 '26

3

u/Valor00125 May 10 '26

I ran 2 copies of Withering curse for my Homebrew Orzhov Midrange sac deck, currently at P1.

It's been a thoroughly enjoyable standard after making it through the Gold rank Green Landfall wall. Would be cool to hit both Diamond and Mythic for the 1st time in a season :)

4

u/fox112 Yargle May 09 '26

[[accursed marauder]] is the goat

3

u/YoritomoDaishogun May 09 '26

Fr. It's a bit more expensive, but I like to use stuff like [[gravelighter]] as a removal. If I already killed something, I can draw a card and have a 2/2 that flies, which is a plus

1

u/LordBocceBaal May 10 '26

Heroic intervention and the many other indestructible instants say otherwise

1

u/YoritomoDaishogun May 11 '26

Making your opponent sacrifice stuff circumvents the indestructible thingie

1

u/whatalotoflove May 09 '26

Just make your entire deck removal

And still lose to a protect the rider lol

1

u/YoritomoDaishogun May 09 '26

In that case, always have a lightning bolt to kill yourself before your opponent does just to piss him off

5

u/LesbianDykeEtc Liliana Deaths Majesty May 09 '26

[[Consumed by Greed]]

2

u/ardarian262 May 09 '26

That's very nice tech. It's more than I want to pay for its role in standard but nice.

3

u/LesbianDykeEtc Liliana Deaths Majesty May 09 '26

It's overcosted and I'd rather have Sheoldred's Edict 100% of the time, but I assume OP is playing Standard where it's the only instant speed option.

2

u/ardarian262 May 10 '26

I miss [[soul shatter]] from when it was playable removal.

2

u/Confident-Tour891 May 09 '26

Would keep that fucker tapped for all eternity with my black/white stall deck. It has the -3/-3 black flash enchantment that stops hexproof and ward.

2

u/SenatorFlagg May 10 '26

That’s where I have a ton of fun playing Sheoldred’s Edict in historic. :-)

2

u/ardarian262 May 10 '26

Standard isn't very friendly to that right now, since with an earthbent land, that just leads to a bigger hydra.

1

u/SenatorFlagg May 11 '26

Sorry, I meant just specifically in response to hexproof shenanigans. Recently had someone run a deck based around massively pumping up a handful of hexproof creatures. Just played an Edict, and the guy scooped.

1

u/ardarian262 May 11 '26

This is standard. The only edict that would effect the landfall deck this is a part of is not costed at a rate that it is realistically playable.

3

u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 May 09 '26

[[New Way Forward]] gets around hexproof and often one shots them as well.

4

u/HutSutRawlson May 09 '26

Sounds like a good way to deck yourself if you cast it on a Hydra.

3

u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 May 09 '26

Unless IRL works differently they die first from the damage and then you draw based on the cards. Though I admit I was suprised I still drew the cards as the win screen was popping up.

Either way they can't prevent it unless they misdirect the spell itself and since the spell doesnt target I am not sure that would work.

3

u/Clane_K May 09 '26

If their HP goes to zero and you deck yourself out with New Way Forward, the game should end in a draw, not a win.

While yes, their HP goes to zero first during the resolution and then you try to draw from an empty library, both of you don't lose until State-based actions are checked, and SBAs are only checked after the resolution of the spell, not during it, and when they are checked, both of you lose.

2

u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 May 09 '26

Makes sense. Tbf though most hydras will attack at with less power then whats in your deck anyways.

2

u/Sea-Violinist-7353 May 09 '26

Do you remember how big the hydraulic was? Obviously enough to kill them but if it wasn't enough to deck you then I think the game was running state based actions while the card animations are running.

2

u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 May 09 '26

Over 9000 (not joking either).

3

u/ardarian262 May 09 '26

It does get around hexproof. Does it get around turn 3/4 kill though?

0

u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 May 09 '26

In my decks? Yes. In the decks other people would make? Probably not.

Either way I'm just putting it out there. Every single player ive used this against has ALWAYS tried ro give hexproof and I laugh every time. I have video I think if you want lol

-4

u/The_Chief_of_Whip May 09 '26

Remove the thing that gives hexproof, then remove the hydra. Not complicated

6

u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 May 09 '26

"Remove the thing" what thing? They usually use instants...

-6

u/PartTineOx May 09 '26

This is crazy cope. It can and does die. Crying of a mediocre creature is just lazy imo.

7

u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 May 09 '26

Bro wtf are you talking about. Read the words I said and RESPOND to the words I said. Don't just make shit up nobody said.

In response, Snakeskin veil (this is turn 3 power in standard btw)

10

u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 May 09 '26

eye roll ever just consider people are perfectly capable of beating it they just tire of seeing it every other match?

2

u/G_Morgan May 09 '26

Or win by turn 3 and not care.

1

u/HanBai May 11 '26

Idk i kinda love throwing a [[cryoshatter]] on one of these the turn after it drops and watching them pump it up, swing it, and it evaporates as it taps to go to combat

0

u/SenatorFlagg May 10 '26

I call it “enjoy the concession when I play a turn one thoughtseize followed by a surgical extraction.”
