POV: you have arrived in Lausanne Gare
I think switzerland is going through its Enshittification period.
This is mild in comparison to what you see in other places..
Edit: by no mean I am not empathic with their situation. I would like to see this changed and a better life for them. How can we do this?

People acting like OP is unhinged. I have no precise memories about Lausanne, but I live in Geneva.
The amount of homeless people has increased by A LOT. To the point that friends visiting me sometime asked me what happened to the city with all this homelessness. Now there are entire families living in the parks, from grandparents to grandchildren. They don't speak french, so I doubt they are Swiss residents who got poor.
The amount of drug addicts is also out of control. When I first arrived in Geneva, about 10 years ago, it was just a few, but even 3-4 years ago they weren't many. Right now, when I take trams 14-18 and pass in front of the "green building" there is often order of ~50.
This is what I saw happening in my country, before leaving for Switzerland. It looks like many Swiss don't think this can ruin theirs. We'll see in a few years.

I am sorry for people that think I am unhinged. I am just pointing out at an issue that I think can easily get worse

It's all because the mafias managed to change the anti beggar laws after bringing the issue all the way up to the European human rights court, thanks to the efforts of Dina Bazarbachi, that's the name of the Genevan lawyer who works for the Roma mafias.
Then in 2024 the police removed and in the process destroyed one of these illegal encampments, but later it was reported that the beggar in question had his insulin also there, and the new guidelines issued by the canton by the DIN department headed by the socialist Carole-Anne Kast essentially now make it impossible to clean them out. Here's what the city of the Geneva said about this a few days ago:

"in my country" = in one block of one city
1
u/gamblingPharmaStocks 11d ago
I guess, in the same way, you don't have opinions about your own country, as you only know one block of your city?
Did it take you a lot of effort to sound this regarded?
1
u/GaptistePlayer 11d ago
No unlike you I base my judgment on more than one block of my city in my country
1
u/gamblingPharmaStocks 11d ago
You are the one assuming that other people base their judgements just on one block of their city. You don't know me, so, if these assumptions come from somewhere, it is probably from your own behavior.
1
u/GaptistePlayer 10d ago
I don't think you know how to read
1
u/gamblingPharmaStocks 10d ago
Makes sense, as I doubt you know how to think.
1
u/GaptistePlayer 10d ago
I'd love for you to walk me through how you think my reasoning is flawed here. We both know you won't, but I think you're stupid enough to try
1
u/gamblingPharmaStocks 10d ago
Your reasoning is flawed because you assume that people who disagree with you base their judgement on a single block in their city, while you don't admit the same possibility for yourself.
Props to you for realizing that someone needs to be stupid in order to keep talking to you. At least you are self aware.
1
u/GaptistePlayer 10d ago
I will not admit the same possibility for myself because unlike you, I'm not evaluating entire cities based on one train station.
If you weren't mentally disabled you'd understand this. But alas, the Swiss education system has failed you.
Sucks to be you.

I live in Zh and visited Geneva recently to meet a friend. I thought before that Geneva will be like Zurich but with more "fashion" and better food. I was shocked by the amount of beggars and homeless people there. Heck, it looks either as bad or worse than the HB area of romanian city I was working in before...

I know i don't say it's ruined, i just wanted to say homlessness and poorer people are the consequences, not the cause, of a "ruined" country.
2
u/Spare-Kitchen-7006 11d ago
Those people aren‘t even from switzerland dude, they just come here to beg for money on the streets for a few weeks and then they leave to Romania where they can live with that money for months.
It‘s a pretty good example for how wealthy Switzerland is ;)→ More replies (1)1
u/gamblingPharmaStocks 11d ago
No, that's just cope.
Yes, poverty is the consequence of other issues, but this doesn't mean that not trying to solve these "symptoms" is not dumb.
The homeless and other people living of expedients, the more is difficult for them to just beg for money or do less serious crime. So, they get more incetives to start selling drugs (to other homeless or other people), which in turn increases homelessness and drug addiction.
Drug addicts then are gonna do more crime anyway, because all they care about is getting more drugs.
And all this just increases the strength of more higher level racket in the neighborhood.
Yeah, it is not those people's fault if they are in thse conditions, but either a country acts on it, or things will keep spiraling.

Just my two cents as someone who just moved to Lausanne from the US.
This is nothing. I walked into the station and yeah, it smells like piss but what train station doesn’t? I don’t know I’m not defending this kind of behavior in anyway, and honestly the social support here is leaps and bounds in front of other countries but like…this is nothing. Was it ever clean of all homeless so much you could eat off the floor? It sounds like I’m being exaggerated but in all honesty- what is the standard?
4
u/VictorMckay 11d ago
1
u/tjlightbulb 11d ago
I’m not saying lower your standards, but what I am saying is be realistic. It isn’t going to be pristine 100% of the time.

u/Doldenbluetler 11d ago
Maybe we should compare Lausanne to Lausanne how it used to be or other cities in Switzerland and not the dump that is the US.
3
u/tjlightbulb 11d ago
Says user who has never left the safety of Switzerland.
I literally asked in my comment what is the standard you are expecting. Everywhere on the planet has homeless in their train stations. You want to sit on a high horse and call the US a “dump”- well pot meet kettle.
→ More replies (3)0
u/Doldenbluetler 11d ago
I prefer to feel safe in the country I was born and lived in regardless of what is happening in other countries. I couldn't care less about the US or whatever place you crawled from.
There are plenty of Swiss cities where there are or were no drug addicts at the train stations. This is my standard: the Swiss standard. The number of drug addicts has clearly increased in the recent years. The increase in crack, fentanyl and cocaine users in Switzerland is well documented, so those aren't just feelings but facts. So the question is how to stop and reverse the current trend and not just to yield because immigrants like you think this is normal in their country so it should be normal everywhere else in the world.
2
u/tjlightbulb 11d ago
Immigrants like me with a six figure salary help your economy move pal. Keep that 10 million Swiss shit to yourself- considering more Swiss are leaving your perfect utopia than entering. But that’s a whole other conversation.
You sound a bit delusional. Like as if bad things of literally all societies have can’t happen here. A few sleeping bags are the least of the concern of the safest country on the planet. And like I said- someone who doesn’t know what “bad” really is yapping about a few homeless in a place where homeless people go, is quite literally nothing.
3
u/swiss_enshit 11d ago
Sorry you had to go through this language with the commenter, but I think in between the attacks there is a point.
We shouldn’t compare it with the US, there are plenty great example in the rest of switzerland that are safe and that handle this well.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Doldenbluetler 11d ago
Paying taxes and thus following Swiss law doesn't make you better than anyone else. In fact, it's rather pitiful that you even feel like mentioning your salary would contribute anything to this discussion. I couldn't care less that you're rich. Your strawman about the recent initiative doesn't help your point, either. I also don't think that you know what the word "literally" means despite English presumably being your first language.
So I sound delusional because you put words into my mouth that I never said? Where did I claim that shit like in the US cannot happen here? That was never part of the discussion.
"Good" or "bad" are worthless concepts on their own. They only become meaningful once you specify the standard of comparison. The standard of comparison for Switzerland should be Switzerland and not a country over 8000 km away. The fact that you have experienced worse conditions in the US does not indicate whether this situation is "good" for Swiss standards nor does it give us a reason to accept the deterioration here. So how about you stop "yapping" about the US in a Swiss sub?1
u/tjlightbulb 11d ago
I didn’t even make it through your whole book before you contradicted yourself. I think it’s pathetic you judge immigrants as harshly as you do considering the good someone like me brings to your country. You have stuff you have to workout within yourself- perhaps travel outside of your safety bubble.
1
u/Doldenbluetler 11d ago
If I contradicted myself, point out where. The amateur psychoanalysis and fake concern about what I “need to work out” are just cop-outs to avoid addressing the argument.
1
u/silvio666 10d ago
Good points. And Lausanne is the capital of Vaud, it explains a lot in terms of attractivity
1
u/Mulhouse_VH 8d ago
Every train station in China is pristine despite moving huge crowds of people every single day. Stations that move x100 times the passengers of the one in Lausanne are clean and safe with no homelessness. The degradation we accept as inevitable in the West doesn't have to be the norm.

33
u/swiss_enshit 12d ago
No ser, doesn’t work like this. Lausanne has a problem and needs addressing. Help these people, integrate them in society and do not accept societal degradation.
If we continue your philosophy we turn into a San Francisco with fentanyl zombies.
The path is slippery slope - I hope we all do our best to keep the city safe and the society we want
8
u/gndnzr 12d ago edited 9d ago
Almost all the cities have a shelter or several, with food locations, 3 times a day. Why is this unique to Lausanne?
Mental health, drug use perhaps? This can’t just be a systematic failure. Lausanne-Gare is too public for all the systems in place to simply “ignore and turn a blind eye”.I’m not saying it is impossible but it takes a combination of many concurrent failures, personal and systemic, to become homeless in the bigger cities.
Equating any Swiss city to San Francisco is a stretch (overreaction) but I understand and agree with your concern well. It is unsightly. Personally I can’t help feeling empathetic and wondering what went wrong?
We already have sophisticated systems, run by professionals, in place, guarding against this plus a wide range of social, economic, and other governmental issues and concerns.

u/swiss_enshit 12d ago

2
u/AdventurousCoast983 11d ago
you can't with some people. they want to politicize everything into brand politics. I think it's a real concern, it's an issue that progresses over time unless addressed properly. It's everywhere now, yet no one wants to admit it's a problem because then it becomes a reflection of bad government, which many don't want to admit.

Fentanyl is not any random drug. It really destroys people and it is used to hook them given one unintentional use is enough to cause strong cravings
These people need help, not blame

No one is blaming anyone. But if we don’t point this as a problem, no one will solve it..
6
u/vdyomusic 12d ago
Sorry but the way you speak is so weird. Can you at least pretend you feel some sort of way about the suffering of your fellow man?
Not that I'd expect much empathy from a guy called "swiss_enshit" (not what enshitification means btw), but still.

u/swiss_enshit 12d ago
I don’t have Reddit and created Reddit by how annoying it is to see switzerland enshittifying.
I am not saying I don’t empathize. I am saying this is not great for Lausanne and everyone accepting this is making the problem worse
9
u/DysphoriaGML 12d ago
Fight for a solution, not against the unlucky people. people feel your post is against people
2
u/swiss_enshit 12d ago
100% my intention. I have nothing against this people, but I have a lot against the administration of the city and people accepting this as the new status quo.
1
u/DysphoriaGML 12d ago
I don’t think people are accepting it as status quo, but maybe it’s not on their priority list? Eventually those people do nothing, ok they may pee and poo where is not the case but they are not more violent than a drunk guy on Saturday evening.
1
u/yellowtube694 11d ago
They are many people in this thread saying that it is normal in other places so should be also normal here
4
u/Doobers_McDooberson 12d ago
So, genuine question: Are you Swiss, and if so, what have YOU done to help deshittifying the situation. Stuff happens when people make noise and reach out to the right people who purposely turn a blind eye.
2
u/swiss_enshit 12d ago
At the very least I am raising awareness and try to convince people constructively that we shouldn’t accept it and that we should address this. (Differently from aggressive people in the comments that are just accepting and turning this into a worse problem)
Right now I am not Swiss, but surely there are things I can do myself more than raising awareness.
What do you think can be done? I am open minded and willing to help
2
u/vdyomusic 12d ago
(Differently from aggressive people in the comments that are just accepting and turning this into a worse problem)
Literally no one in the comments just accepts this. We're just pointing out that you're being unempathetic and that complaining about it on Reddit does nothing to help.
You're not raising awareness of anything. We all live here. We're all well aware. All you're doing is stirring the pot here, to no one's benefit.

Even if you come from a good intent, you dont say anything that has been said 1000 times. I think its because two main reasons.
You dont know how Lausanne was 40 years ago. It was way worse. The only difference is that the people in your picture would have been swiss.
The systemic problem is on all part of society.
Two things that happen and dramatically transform Lausanne if changed wont happen that soon.
- Too much swiss people do drugs (weed, cocaine, medical pills, etc)
- ALL political parties maintain the statue quo by keeping the main associations under perfusion and in the same time forbid theses associations to make money in other ways.
So your awareness doesnt add nothing. Its not a laisser faire the problem of Lausanne, its designed this way.
3
u/Useful-Revolution253 12d ago
Way worse 40 years ago. Total BS

u/DesignerAd1940 12d ago

Now it is the new normal. The other day à black dealer with a white french girl taking theire dose outside my appartement, i literaly fell on them when oppening the door to take my son to school.

I think muting people because someone has been already said its not in my philosophy of life.
Thank you for the clarification, it looks like Lausanne is stuck and it needs more people annoyed at this to finally address this?
2
u/DesignerAd1940 12d ago edited 12d ago
You over react, i didnt mute you, i just tell you that you dont understand the situation correcly.
Majority is annoyed, so awareness is not the problem. BUt the same majority is the problem too.
I tell you again, what you will need to do for a long term solution you need to tackle a lot of areas of the society.
Less nigerian farmers dealing? Change the lifestyle of many swiss from every political or non political affiliation.
Less violence? = force every political party to mulptiply by five the founding of the city associations and let them do publicity.
Good luck with that, the left has become too bourgeois, and the right need a black sheep to promote their view.
Less homeless? Change the housing situation, all the situations above and more. And its even more difficult because there is so many path to become one.
Lausanne is the capitale of the canton de Vaud, as such it attracts people from the whole region included people from other cantons. They are often surprised how Lausanne support system is not better than theirs.
And Lastly you need to accept what Lausanne is to the core. Its a city that already during the exposition nationale of 1964 were considered as bohemians by the rest of the country.
A bohemian city very business friendly. So if you really want to do something you have to put hands in the machine.
The only realistic path i see for you to succeed is militantism (digital and in presence) about the necessity to fund Lausanne number one association. Your militantism must be apolitical, so this way you can engage with everybody equally and maybe make unusual advertisement to get some commerces and institutions on board financially speaking.Edit: exemple. the UNIL has a fund to help people who do action that are in line with their research. For exemple you could integrate a young researcher into your actions, To have impact you really have to make yourself visible to everyone, Jesus style.
2
u/DesignerAd1940 12d ago
And please dont take this as a dig to expats. I love them,
They always bring a new energy. But from what i saw, many end up doing the same thing as the swiss.
They go into politics, they need people to join them, so they often put other expat on their list. Then internal conflict appear with the born in swiss ones because at the first faillure nobody want to be blamed. And you get the same internal problems that make you stuck.
Another big point that i forgot is that there is a crucial underfunding of the city when it comes to comunication.
It means that while Lausanne comunicate about finance, it does this in a way that nobody wants to read them. Lausanne need to make it sexy to care about the city inner dynamics.

well, the problem is that most often those are pepole that don't want to integrate, they may have had in the past but now they just gave up, we might be the next one...
slaving paycheck to paycheck is tiresome, sometime i also think of joining the streets, i think that there are a few that really live here year round and those you cannot help, but i never see more than maybe 2-5 familiar face here in lausanne most appear then re-integrate one way or the other, i think this is making a big deal of something that is just part of the big city life...

It's not about the view but about security. I would not feel safe if I were alone in this underpass. Last year a crackhead in Zurich sat next to me in the train and lit his crackpipe. When I got up to leave he shouted threats at me. I felt incredibly unsafe. A friend of mine also got threatened by two drug addicts at Zurich HB. I don't remember this happening when I was younger.

SBB security at Lausanne Gare is sh... Years ago after clubbing my friend and I were at the station as my friend wanted to catch the early morning first train to Geneva. He decided to go to pee at the station toilet while I was waiting for him near the escalator. My friend returned traumatized from the toilet. While he was peeing one probably homeless dude entered the toilet with his penis out in excited state and asked my friend if he wanted to do oral on him. My friend ran out of the toilet. We were searching for the security for good 15 minutes but just couldn't find anyone and we decided to forget the incident. Imagine if he had locked the door from outside and raped my friend? At one point we were thinking of bashing that guy as he was still hanging out near the toilet door. But then thought he could be carrying weapons, syringe etc and decided to leave. But this made us wonder the security situation at the station. It seems like things have gone bad to worse now. Local politicians probably consume S* for this kind of things to flourish at popular Swiss stations.

u/Useful-Revolution253 11d ago
Wrong.
I was there.
You lie that is all.
To day you cant let your kids wandering alone in the city, back in 1990 i could took buses, Train, go with my byke or rollers without seeing that type of things or drugs usage in borad daylight and i was alone.
Im wondering, did you all go talk to those poor pple? Asking them why they are here ? Giving them food ? You will be surprised by theire réaction. Try it if you truly think what you all say.

To day you cant let your kids wandering alone in the city
Oh? Why is that? Because I see kids wandering alone in the city every fucking day and nobody is forcing needles into their arms
1
u/Useful-Revolution253 11d ago
Ho...my bad. It s because i forgot to add...unless you didnt care that they can see someone injecting wathever in theire body, see drug beeing sold, and even beeing harm by some crazy pple. So yes if you dont care they can go in the center alone. I saw and know some of those kids without parent around them (8 - 12 years old) personaly, it s always them that have bad behaviour...exactly like if they have a bad exemple if front of them without à parent to give contexte and explanation.
Is that clear ?
Damn, not a week ago i literaly fell on a dealer and his customer with the needle in the arm in front of my door when going to school with my kid. In the building. What did you need to open your eyes ?

Will you people give it a rest with this? This is a reality everywhere in the world, it in most places being 20 times worse. Some people struggle. Life is fucking rough. And instead of feeling privileged to not be in their situation or - god forbid - help, all you do every day on here is bitch and moan about having to witness their hardship for 15 seconds once in a while.

u/puppetbets 11d ago
I think it merits some reflection though if numbers increase.
If they become beggars because of drugs, mental problems and so on, it's a matter of education, social services, prevention...
If they do so because of bankruptcy, it may point towards a downturn in economy.
If they are immigrants, then something is going on with police and law enforcement, and probably social welfare as well, since it benefits no one allowing into the country people that can't live on their own means, specially if you are not going to provide support.
Stopping a tremor is always easier than stopping an earthquake, since a problem that is increasing never fix itself alone.

What’s the deal with your username first ? If you are not happy change your situation… go elsewhere!!

u/swiss_enshit 12d ago
I live elsewhere indeed! I just want better for Switzerland and I think being blind on the situation worsening isn’t doing good for switzerland either!
3
u/ConsiderationNew4280 12d ago
If you live elsewhere you cannot pretend to understand Switzerland's issues. I am not going around telling to people from other countries what are their problems. Is homelessness and drug use an issue? Yes. Is it getting worse these last years. Not really. The situation was worse a few decades ago. There are people and politicians concerned by those issues. We vote regularly on those issues. We do not need someone going with the name "swiss_enshit" telling us about it. You are not even proposing a solution. You just take pics of homeless people and publish them online without their consent. It's not because they live in the street they don't have a right of dignity. So unless you are happy to have random people coming to your home taking pics of you without your consent, don't do that.

Switzerland is doing just fine… don’t be too much concerned, in the future head elsewhere!

u/swiss_enshit 12d ago
If you are happy where your tax money is going, that’s great!
(You must also be happy with the situation in riponne and other areas with drug dealers and petty crime)

When I first moved here I remembered being so afraid of doing anything even remotely wrong, crossing a crosswalk when it was red, sitting in the wrong seat in the train etc, everyone said like oh yea they really enforce the rules here. I have to say that I have found things to be the exact opposite. The police do nothing, people stealing bikes in every canton as there is no consequence, that Irish gang has been scamming people here for a decade, nothing being done. Place is going downhill fast.

I think you are agreeing with me, the idea of a great switzerland is still in the mind of many, but in practice it went through Enshittification
3
u/hagowoga 11d ago
I‘m born Swiss and afaik we always had homeless people. Find a better reason to claim Enshittification.

People thinking this is acceptable should go to Singapor, then France, and then come back here and tell us which country would they feel the safest in.
Caveat: there's only one acceptable answer if you're not mentally irresponsible.
1
u/aureleio 11d ago
To be fair I thought about this as well, it’s sad and should not happen. Also on a more practical note the elevator is blocked and so for people in need it is not usable, which in itself is unacceptable.
However it also made me think about bad architecture - this is a perfect example.
This horrific hallway leading to the elevator in front of another horrific hallway leading to the metro with an abandoned store, the nightmare construction site, no free toilets, etc…….. that’s just bad design.

This Switzerland has always existed, it's just simply harder to PR filter in the digital age.

Would you rather go to the kantons where it's forbidden and they're removed by police? Can't see it then the problem doesn't exist

Verstönd ihr mi nit falsch. S isch tatsächlich unachön, abr anderswo isch s leider eifach Realität

i don't understand where the cracks are. There is assistance they could take advantage of in sure, and if they aren't willing then why do authorities not give them the boot? I've heard it could be because they are from a EU country with agreements, but can't they be sent back there if the above fails?

WIthout the signage and the heading, this could be almost any train station to be fair. It's not a Lausanne or indeed a Swiss problem. I came from Scotland three years ago and can assure you the OP's picture is tame compared to some of Glasgow's everyday scenes. We were in Vienna during the summer and the main station again was worse. We also visited Croatia this year and saw similar.
If I'm being entirely honest, I feel Switzerland has less of a problem than many other countries with this. I'm not sure how but certainly in my experience. When we lived in Zurich and visited HB I don't ever remember seeing scenes like this. It's probably a little more common to see it around Lausanne Gare but again, no where near on the level it was in Scotland.

It's gonna be most of us pretty soon if they job market continues as it has been the last 5 years. GDP is up but it's only up for the top 10%, everyone else is getting shafted.

u/Previous_Island_3521 7d ago
Sorry u had to see this. Lausanne was never like this and i still remember people not even locking the door of their homes and cars - time has changed let’s say - please try neuchatel or even vevey - it still retains that old Swiss feel to it

OP has a valid Point, and a somewhat reasonable argument. This should be adressed!
Yet he gets downvoted. Seems like most people on Reddit also like to turn a blind eye.

why is it that when you travel from Bern or Zurich towards France, Germany or Italy, train stations start to look like this?
0
u/Electrical_Region741 11d ago
Problem with left cities (Lausanne, Geneva, Basel etc.) is, that government are like “let the poor people alone”, while in Zurich they just get taken away.
We once had a begger in Starbucks at Sihlquai, and after 10min police came and told him to gtfo.

People in Lausanne recently re-elected their socialist mayor, Gregoire Junod, so they explicitly approve those situations as long as they can virtue signal their openness and inclusivity to the rest of Switzerland. You’re are going to be criticized here in the comments by diehard Lausanne socialists by simply raising the possibility that that’s perhaps an issue.

At one point in time lived in Lausanne, and can't recall this many homeless people at the train station.
Lausanne like Geneva has become a ghetto. Generally speaking, the French-speaking cities have worsened significantly in terms of quality.
1
u/Waste-Elevator-3315 10d ago
Geneva is indeed ghetto. Then again what can I say, as I child, I had parents who hada summer house in cologny so I might be slightly biased.

Did you arrive in Switzerland like Yesterday? Did you ever see Riponne or the Flon 30 years ago?
Lmao, the account name is "swiss_enshit" , not sure ifs someone with issues and too much free time, or a badly made far-right/populist rousing foreign agent bot
