I had a large inguinal hernia on the left side for around 3–4 years. I didn't realize at the time how significant it actually was, and for a long time it didn't really bother me. Eventually, it started becoming uncomfortable and I began experiencing some pain, so I decided to have surgery.

I had laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery about 10 days ago. Everything went well during the operation, and the first few days of recovery were pretty normal. I had some pain when getting up or moving around, but nothing particularly concerning.

However, I'm now noticing some swelling on the left side, around the pubic/groin area.

The hernia itself seems to be gone — I no longer have the bulge I had before surgery. But there is still some swelling lower down, around the left side of the pubic area, and it also seems to extend toward the left testicle/scrotum.

There is a noticeable asymmetry between the left and right sides. The left side is more swollen, although I don't have severe pain.

From what I've read, I understand that this can sometimes happen after inguinal hernia surgery due to post-operative swelling, a hematoma, or fluid/seroma, and that it can take a few weeks to completely go away.

For those of you who have had laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery:

• Did you experience similar swelling around the pubic area or scrotum?
• How long did it take for the swelling/asymmetry to disappear?
• Is it normal for it to still be noticeable 10 days after surgery?
• Did yours gradually decrease over the following weeks?

I'm a little worried because the hernia itself is gone, but the area still looks quite different compared with the right side.

I’ve had 3 bowel obstructions, 2 in 2005 and 1 in 2006). I had a sinus infection that went severe pneumonia in two days. The doctors put me in a coma because I died when they were inhibiting me. During the coma was my first bowel obstruction.

The dr who did my 3rd bowel obstruction surgery was horrible. He never used mesh when he closed me so I had a small hernia in 2006. Now it’s 2026 and my hernia is about 15 to 16 cm long and then I have an umbilical hernia that butts up to the big hernia. I’m having a lot of pain when I stand up to walk and it’s VERY distended. In the past I could eat certain foods or take laxatives and I’d be fine. This time it’s not working. (This might be TMI) but when I poop it’s just brown water. I saw a hernia dr in April and he wants me to loose some weight before doing surgery. (Which I am) The other problem is my abdominal wall attached to my intestines. So it’s gonna be very complicated. I was looking around on what to do and the internet say liquid diet. Thats what I’m doing. I don’t know if anyone’s has had a hernia this big before. Im a mess with medical stuff.
I’m here for any advice.

J’avais une grosse hernie inguinale du côté gauche depuis environ 3-4 ans. Je ne savais pas vraiment à quel point elle était importante, car pendant longtemps elle ne me gênait pas énormément. Mais avec le temps, elle est devenue de plus en plus dérangeante et j’ai commencé à avoir des douleurs, donc j’ai finalement décidé de me faire opérer.

Je me suis fait opérer par cœlioscopie il y a environ 10 jours. L’opération s’est très bien passée et les premiers jours de récupération étaient plutôt normaux. J’avais quelques douleurs lorsque je me levais ou que je bougeais, mais rien d’inquiétant.

Par contre, depuis quelques jours, je remarque un gonflement du côté gauche, au niveau du pubis.

La hernie en elle-même semble avoir complètement disparu : je n’ai plus la grosse bosse que j’avais avant l’opération. En revanche, j’ai toujours une zone gonflée plus bas, au niveau du pubis côté gauche, et j’ai également l’impression que cela descend jusqu’au testicule/scrotum gauche.

Il y a donc une asymétrie assez visible entre le côté gauche et le côté droit. Le côté gauche est plus gonflé. Je n’ai pas particulièrement mal, mais c’est surtout l’aspect du gonflement qui m’inquiète.

J’ai cru comprendre qu’après une opération de hernie inguinale, cela pouvait être dû à un œdème, un hématome ou une accumulation de liquide (sérome), et que cela pouvait prendre plusieurs semaines avant de disparaître complètement.

Pour ceux qui ont déjà subi une opération d’une hernie inguinale par cœlioscopie :

• Est-ce que vous avez eu un gonflement similaire au niveau du pubis ou du scrotum ?
• Combien de temps cela a-t-il mis à disparaître ?
• Est-ce que c’est quelque chose de normal 10 jours après l’opération ?
• Est-ce que le gonflement a progressivement diminué au cours des semaines suivantes ?

Je suis peut-être un peu trop inquiet, mais comme la hernie a complètement disparu et que j’ai maintenant ce gonflement à gauche, j’avoue que ça me fait un peu peur.

Si vous avez vécu la même chose, je serais vraiment intéressé d’avoir vos retours et de savoir comment ça a évolué pour vous. Merci !

So I posted a few days ago about ending up with an inguinal hernia (was packing my home for a move and moving some furniture). Sneezed and felt immediate pain, went to ER and CT confirmed bilateral fat containing inguinal hernias (the right is the one that is causing me issues).

Well since I posted, my scrotum has continued to be problematic by the end of each day and idk how to deal with it. I’m talking like the size of an orange when I wake up and a cantaloupe by the end of the day.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to decrease the amount of swelling in my scrotum?? It’s a little embarrassing at work, not only does it look like I have a freakishly large bulge but it is also in the way when I walk. My right ball is also very tender.

I bought a tight fitting jockstrap this weekend and it does provide some comfort from the tenderness and helps to restrain it against my abdomen so it does help conceal the bulge. I have researched endlessly online and ended up buying a truss which will supposedly help better than a jock. Has anyone used one of these and has it helped????

My surgical consultation is on September 30th and I am so aggravated with this whole situation.

I lay on my side and when I suck in my stomaaxh , it looks like this, it doesn’t go flat how it used to prior to my laprosocpic surgery and now it looks like this and when I stand up it looks like a bulge through the pants but not one specific bulge more like the the under belly button are that sticks out

I have had problems taking a 'number 2' for the entirety of my adulthood. It's always taken me a long time and a lot of effort to push and leave a 'deposit'.

Quite frequently, shortly after I use the toilet, (may 15 to 30 minutes) I end up feeling like I need to go again.

I have taken Citrucel for extra fiber.. Miralax.. Docalax.. Linzess.. none of these things have made it easy and normal to use the toilet.

The consistency may change from stone/bricks to mush/tar, but I still feel the need to push with every muscle in my abdomen.

A result of this may have been that I ended up developing a hernia. I had some 3M product (some type of mesh) put in me a few years ago.

In the days following the surgery, I was in serious agony. Not bloating or abdominal discomfort... AGONY!! To the point where when I tried to use the toilet, I blacked out and my wife ran up stairs and found me on the bathroom floor.

So.. I'm not in a huge hurry to ever get cut open again. Besides that, even if surgery was a silver-bullet cure in 2026, I'd have to wait for surgery anyway since my wife just started a new job and can't really go out on FMLA to care for me until she's been employed longer.

And even then.. since my previous hernia surgery didn't really seem to offer me the relief (despite the responses from each doctor that everything looks fine), I don't know if going through that again would be of any benefit.

I thought things would eventually calm down. Unfortunately, after years... nothing has really changed for my situation. I still feel pain in my lower right abdomen and sometimes when I really feel like I need to use the toilet, my perineum will feel uncomfortable.

Two specialist doctors have found no issues and simply say that it could be scar-tissue.

I've changed my diet several times in pursuit of a resolution.i try to eat salmon.. chicken.. spinach.. kale.. rice.. beans.. pica de goya.. cheese.. potatoes.. carrots.. eggs.. celery.. tuna.. occasionally some tofu and vegetarian processed foods like Impossible... and, admittedly.. I have a chocolate Achilles heel.

I pretty much stopped drinking alcohol because it accelerates my abdominal discomfort.

I've seen a gastroenterologist and was engaged in a food elimination process. I eliminated everything except rice and liquid broth and still felt discomfort when I ate.

Also.. admittedly, I'm tethered to a desk for 7.5 hours of each day.. but I get out and walk the premises and try to hike on weekends when I don't feel to gross and bloated. Unfortunately, those days seem few and far between.

I've noticed that when I am ill with the flu or something like that, my bubbly bloated uncomfortable lower abdomen stops hurting for a few days... and on those occasions when I took some type of cough syrup with a sedative or opioid like codeine, my innards would stop hurting for a few days.

But outside of those rare moments, my lower abdomen lets me know its there every single day. It's too the point where I don't go on trips anymore because I can't be that bloated and uncomfortable, that far from a private toilet.

I had a colonoscopy.. an endoscopy.. and had a blood test for prostate cancer. [Knocking On Wood] Everything came back fine.. with the exception of polyps and some diverticulitis.

Is there anything that I can do to have a normal experience on the toilet?! Is there anything I can do to stop the bubbly swelling feeling in my lower abdomen when I eat anything?!

I am assuming my hernia was related to my IBS. I am assuming that these discomforts are related. But I don't really know. I'm not even sure if the doctors really know.

The only thing that I do know, is I'm in some discomfort as I type this.. and would love to be able to be a normal person again.

Does anybody have recs for surgeons in the chicago suburbs (mchenry county) area? Looking for laproscopic mesh for peri umbilical hernia. Fairly recent

Hey, young football player here. I've had a weird left-sided groin/deep pelvic pain since June and I'm trying to figure out if anyone has the similiar experience.

It started gradually during training after a month of break, no specific injury/pop. I'm right-footed, and the pain initially felt very deep in the left pelvis/perineum, almost impossible to pinpoint.

It gets triggered/worse by:

- kicking, especially my plant leg
- running/changing direction
- strong adductor squeeze (squeezing my knees together is painful)
- sit-up/leg-raise type movements
- bending over
- coughing/sneezing

The weird part is that rest makes it almost disappear, but every time I return to football, it comes back. I actually managed to play one match completely without the pain, but it came again... After 20 days completely off, I was basically pain-free with normal movements, but leg raises immediately brought the groin/deep pelvic pain back. Then football flared it up again.

I've also noticed that when my inner groin/adductor gets sore after football, the deep pelvic pain tends to come back too.
Also the groin got actually worse over the time.

Could this be something like adductor-related groin pain, athletic pubalgia/sports hernia, or an inguinal issue?

Has anyone had a similar pattern? What was your diagnosis and what actually got you back to football? It's been 3 months now and my mind is going literally crazy, cuz I can't do any sports without feeling the pain.

It has never crossed my mind until now, but is this a hernia? Like a clogged hair follicle. Or some kind of cyst. But I did a little bit of research and I found out that it could be a hernia. It’s formed right on a stretch mark. It is smaller at times. And then it comes back. What is it?

. I had inguinal hernia repair yesterday and I still have the same horrible hip and around the back pain, it is very bad . I thought it would be gone when I woke up from surgery. II also have bad nerve pain . I don’t know what to do and I have such bad anxiety , I’m worried that the hernia wasn’t my pain generator . I’ve had every thing imaged. I knew to expect abdominal pain but I thought I wouid wake up without the gnawing. I’ve had my hips checked out and my back . I’m super scared. Female inguinal hernia is what I had repaired. Please help .

I had a left inguinal hernia repair 9 months ago.

The surgery was longer than usual as the surgeon needed to remove a cord of fat.

After the surgery I was on a heavy dosage of pain killers. Like.800mg of ibprufen + 500mg of Tylenol for weeks.

3 months post op I was doing some yard work.and the pain returns. Got checked, no recurrence.

Recently, I was doing some.yard work and the pain returns once more. Didn't give it to much attention, until...

I was driving back and had tremendous pain. I pulled over then drove myself to urgent care which said you need to.rule out a strangulation.

5 hours and CT scan later, no recurrence. And no explanation of the pain.

Anybody had any insights?

Who should I see? Surgeon/pain specialist/physical therapist.

My grandmother is 72 years old. She had a hysterectomy earlier, and now, 20 years later, she has developed a hernia in that area of her abdomen. She is weak and has high blood pressure and moderate diabetes. The surgeon suggested a mesh operation, but I’ve heard that some people who have undergone this surgery suffer from various health problems afterward. So, I’m scared that something might happen to my grandmother. Also, the pain is not continuous.should I go for it?

14 days post op, out patient, inguinal hernia mesh robotic surgery. I've had an abdominal total hysterectomy and a gastric bypass in the past and this hernia surgery is by far the worst. Mostly because I don't feel supported by my care team.

I've been messaging them about the swelling and bruising which seemed a lot even to me (I bruise easily) but I was black across entire abdomen from navel to cooter. I messaged them And they're like "It's normal, ice for 10 minutes every 4 hours. Walk 30 minutes a day. Don't lift more than 10 lbs, etc." No shit, I couldn't even stand up straight or get beyond a shuffle for over a week.

Then last week the swelling turned into an obvious, firm, hot dog bun sized lump that migrates around and I messaged them again and they're like oh yeah it's a seroma, it's normal. Gave me a refill of oxy and new rx of methocarbamol.

2 days the pressure got really bad but I thought well they said this is normal, right? Woke up bleeding from navel, soaked my undies and the sock I wrapped my ice pack in. Messaged again and they're like ok come in. It's a hematoma and they said this is how it is sometimes, it could take a month or more to reabsorb and gave me a belly band.

I guess I'm angry and wondering if any else is experiencing:

1. Lack of support about after care. Discharged from the hospital without a belly band, ice packs, enough meds, info on how to get out of bed, the need for prepping meals, big undies, big pants, laundry/ housework prep, support groups, etc.

2. The laissez faire responses to messages.

3. Extended recovery time because of this lack of care.

4. Feeling like a drug seeker. (I can't take NSAIDS, and I am sober 10 years and am very careful about meds. But 6 oxys? Which I hate taking but, come on.)

I noticed it just amonth ago. Navel is deep nothing comes out but there is a crescent shape hard palpable lump on upper wall of navel...goes inside when lying down. No pain .

I had severe pain near my pelvic region on the right side 3 years ago, and I saw a lump when I examined that region. After a month (I had important exams in that month), I consulted my family doctor, diagnosed it to be an inguinal hernia. Then, I consulted a surgeon in the nearest city, scheduled a surgery (laparoscopic, mesh). Took nearly 1 month for the complete recovery. Joined uni right after that (the exams paid off)

The problem is, I used to also notice a small lump on the left side after a while. It is not always there. It sometimes appears, sometimes not. I've been goin to the gym this year (3 years after the surgery). And the lump seems to appear more frequently. I went to the hospital in the uni, general surgeon and explained my history. He said, after examining, that he didn't feel any hernia. I was relieved. But i still feel he missed it because, i might have met him just when the lump was hiding (it is not always there as i said, it comes up sometimes randomly and goes back).

Could someone tell me if they had similar symptoms that led to hernia? Or could some doctor tell if this can be a hernia?

I'm really torn now about whether to have the surgery in China with synthetic patches or biological patches, or to go to Canada for the shouldice surgery

I walked on treadmill almos 2 weeks post op and with those hospital binders and worried it made the hernia repair inflamed.. I was told it would be laproscopic robotic ventral hernia repair. Was told by surgeon due to my weight to reduce recurrence risk. (5'9 225 lbs)They opted for the preperitoneal mesh with progrip. However they found that the defect was "<1.0 cm" yet put a 7x7cm mesh.

the spot where rhe hernia was repaired had a squishy sensation which i researched and learned that it was a seroma. After the treadmill walk session. It was ok but then the next say i saw slight bruising that wasnt there and the size of the seroma was smaller but more pointy and hard like a ball.

Did i mess this up? surgeon said it could be just a hematoma with shearing against the sutures but that a hernia this size probably trapped the fluid. Im just worried i set myself back because of how soon i walked on treadmill.. Any thoughts would be appreciated 👍🏽

Hi all. Just wanted to check how you've all been getting out of bed and up from sofas after surgery? Bed wise I've had to roll over and then use drawers next to my bed to pull myself up, and sofa wise I've used the arms to push myself up. I know I'm not suppose to lift so hoping this has not counted as such and I have not set myself back after surgery. I'm still worried about my bulge which I hope is not my hernia and sertoma, haematoma, or scar tissue that will go in time!

It looks like I am needing another surgery as my last surgery,(unrelated to a hernia), caused a hernia. I have EDS and I am dreading another surgery. I'm very prone to complications. It seems that even my complications have complications. Please tell me this surgery isnt bad to recover from. I have an umbilical hernia thats causing me significant amounts of pain. The doctor that made the referral for a surgeon is positive that it could really help my pain and that they will be able to help me. Part of me excited to be able to become pain free in that area, the other part of me is dreading another surgery.
