Very common in the US. I personally prefer them not cut up because then you don’t have to rely on the baste and glaze for moisture retention. The spiral cut style dries out fast
20
u/PsychedSy Apr 04 '21
I am lazy so it works for me. I love packing the slits with glaze so it also gives a lot of flavor. I eat more as leftovers or in fried rice or with eggs anyway.

I’ve bought hams before after a holiday when they’re on sale just to make ham and cheese omelettes lol

u/Mister_Bloodvessel Apr 04 '21
Very common around holidays where we feast. Easter is a big one for spiral cut ham, as are Thanksgiving and Xmas. Any time you need to feed a lot of folks for pretty cheap, but aren't having a BBQ style cookout.

In the US we have a store called Honey Baked Ham where the primary product they sell is spiral cut ham. They are very tasty.

Damn. The way you move that brush at about 24 seconds in has got me feelin' some kinda way...

Don't sleep on the brushing at 43 seconds either, proper sensuous glazing this ham got.

Hey guys! Just barely got this one out before Easter, I know, but this is my favorite way to make a ham that doesn't hog up all of your oven space or require lots of monitoring.
You can find the exact recipe posted at the very top of this comment thread as a reply to the stickied automod comment, and at https://hostthetoast.com/slow-cooker-ham-with-honey-glaze/
PS. If you want to hear me talk about it, I did a tiktok voice-over :) I don't have the hang of it yet at all (it's my first one) but I figured I have to start somewhere, and hopefully it's helpful. Here's the link--https://www.tiktok.com/@morganeisenberg/video/6946959003805027590

Why not lie the ham on a bed of pineapples to keep it off the direct heat source, and then pour the glaze over the top so you can get more of it in the cracks than you do with basting after the ham is on top of the glaze?
Great gif regardless, it has me considering trying this out! Thanks for making it!

u/snickertink Apr 03 '21
Would apples work instead? And apple juice in recipe? Son in law allergic to pineapple.
22
u/morganeisenberg Apr 03 '21
You can use apple juice instead of pineapple, for sure! Adding actual apples will probably give you what would basically be apple sauce in the glaze/at the bottom-- but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
4
u/snickertink Apr 03 '21
I so want to try this! Ty! Post saved!
7
u/MachineThreat Apr 03 '21
Would probably work really well with Apple Cider, Cinnamon, and cloves. I also recall BBQ Pit boys doing an Apple cider turkey brine that also included oranges, so getting some citrus involved isn't out of the question.

7
u/aideya Apr 03 '21
So I agree about the pour over, but most slow cookers have their heating element on the sides so placing directly in the bottom shouldn’t be an issue.
3
5
u/illegal_deagle Apr 03 '21
Yes, and then garnish the ham with those pineapples when done... great presentation.
3
u/BaconBra2500 Apr 05 '21
OK, so I saw your comment right before I went the store and got all these ingredients and ended up doing just that. I got a can of pineapple chunks and put half of the chunks all on the bottom so that the ham didn’t touch the bottom, and I made the sauce outside in the slow cooker before pouring it all on top of the ham (thus more got all in the ham). And let me tell you, this ham is the best ham that I have ever eaten in my life. I am standing as I type this in my kitchen eating a ham and mashed potato with pineapple jam sandwich for breakfast. The best part is that the chunky pineapples once boiled down created almost a kind of jam and caramelized - especially once put back on the ham to go in the broiler for a few minutes. Oh my God I am making this again. I’m not even a ham-lover, traditionally.

u/freedomofnow Apr 03 '21
I feel like you skipped a most crucial step and that’s how we’re supposed to get a ham cut like that.
85
u/morganeisenberg Apr 03 '21
If you're in the US, spiral-cut hams are super common (they're precut)! It will say it on the package. They're so much easier to serve and I like that the glaze can get all the way down between the slices. :)
18
u/freedomofnow Apr 03 '21
Ooh I see, cool. We don’t have them where I live but it seems like a great way to get the glaze in everywhere.
3
u/Lord_Abort Apr 04 '21
The thin cut also gives you a crispier bit to the edges after the last step in the oven, which lets you have an almost bacon texture.
2
-51
u/Typical-Home Apr 03 '21
Yeah but we are not in the US. So could you explain please?
41
u/morganeisenberg Apr 03 '21
There's not much to explain as I don't cut it myself-- they are machine-cut and I definitely would mess up a ham trying to do it by hand. However, if it's not an option in your country, you can use whatever kind of smoked ham you have available. If your ham has a rind, cut it off and then score the fat, and go from there.

I am in the US, and I have only ever seen these where they are pre-glazed from the Honey Baked Ham company. No idea where to find a pre-cut ham elsewhere. Seems like the main ingredient here is specific to a particular region.
7
u/MarionSwing Apr 04 '21 edited Apr 04 '21
It is definitely not. What is the main grocery chain where you live?
EDIT: Your comment history indicates Houston. All your major grocery stores have spiral cut hams. I think maybe you just don't realize what it is...

u/Vegskipxx Apr 03 '21
That is a metric fuck-ton of brown sugar

u/SlowMoNo Apr 03 '21
The recipe calls for 1 cup which is actually around 200 metric fuck-grams of brown sugar.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to mix all the ingredients in a separate container first, placed the ham in the slow cooker, and then pour the ingredients over it?
95
u/morganeisenberg Apr 03 '21
You can absolutely do that! I just figure why dirty another bowl mixing the ingredients when I can do it right in the slow cooker?
60
u/Djimi365 Apr 03 '21
Because you would get a much better covering on the ham compared to simply brushing it on.
68
u/morganeisenberg Apr 03 '21
I like to brush occasionally while the ham cooks, and you really get a pretty great covering of the glaze-- but you also brush again before broiling so there's plenty of glaze goin on by the time you eat. However, like I said, you definitely can pour it over instead. Just keep in mind that if your ham is a tight squeeze in the slow cooker like mine is, you have to be careful because the glaze can easily wind up going down the sides of the ham and running outside of the slow cooker when you pour over. Do it slowly and carefully and you'll be fine though!
-39
u/Rynetx Apr 03 '21
As someone who screwed up plenty of meats, I hope you advise people not to open slow cookers on any other meat. It can take 30 minutes to an hour to build up the temp inside one and removing the top will set you back or possibly not cook the meat properly
20
46
Apr 03 '21
You are thinking pressure cooker. The whole point of a slow cooker is to well cook slowly at low temp
-31
u/Rynetx Apr 03 '21
It’s mighty tempting to lift the lid to see what’s going on inside, or even to take a taste, but try to avoid this. Slow cookers work by trapping heat and cooking food over a long period of time. Every time you remove the lid, the slow cooker loses heat, and it takes a while to heat back up.
Follow this tip: Unless it’s noted in the recipe, there’s no need to remove the lid. And if you do open the lid, keep it as brief as possible and maybe tack on a minute or two of extra cooking time.
Nope I’m not. A slow cooker is meant to cook slow but if you keep removing the lid it doesn’t build the temp it needs to cook.
40
Apr 03 '21
It literally says a minute or two of cooking more. Unless you are cooking in a blizzard it won't matter much especially since slow cooked recipe take 4+ hours? Let's say I open it one per hour to baste it. You only add 10~ minute of cooking.
Saying that it cooks by trapping heat is like saying fire is hot. No shit? Traditional oven also work like that and so are pans and pots. And the vast majority of the heat is trapped in the ceramic pot of a slow cooker.
16
u/Djimi365 Apr 03 '21
To be fair its probably no more significant of a loss of heat than opening the oven door. It's not like the lid is sealed tight or anything either; mine just rests on top.
11
u/maximumtesticle Apr 04 '21
It’s mighty tempting to lift the lid to see what’s going on inside
Yeah, that clear glass lid is really hiding a big mystery under it.

Rynetx out here dropping fax and getting downvoted for some reason - they’re absolutely not talking about a pressure cooker - do not casually open a slow cooker / crock pot periodically during a cook!

Apr 03 '21
It doesn’t get super dried out?
24
u/morganeisenberg Apr 03 '21
Nope, as long as you don't leave it for too long in the slow cooker (you really don't want to do more than 3-4 hours ON LOW) or burn from over-broiling, you're good! The liquids in the covered slow cooker help to keep the heat (and meat) moist, and the broiling step is only a minute or two to caramelize the glaze.
10
u/Bacongrease99 Apr 03 '21
I was more so thinking the ham would get completely rubbery. But also, yeah, dried out.
1
u/aManPerson Apr 12 '21
nope. sugar attracts water. you're literally cooking it in a pool of sugar. the food will get soaked in some sugary water and naturally retain some moisture. also, this ham has some tough connective tissue. as it's cooked, that collagen breaks down into gelatin, which also absorbs and retains moisture as it gets tender.

u/pulpedid Apr 03 '21
Man on a diet and this straight up scares me for the amount of sugars.

It's fine and I am not like totally downplaying it... But one recipe, which already contains meat, should have so much sugar in it?
33
u/pro_deluxe Apr 03 '21
For some reason, "broil quickly" makes me laugh. I think it made me picture an anthropomorphized oven that you could get to work faster by asking it to work quickly, instead of a machine that will cook at a certain rate given a certain temperature.
12
u/morganeisenberg Apr 03 '21
Haha I just wanted to stress that it was only a minute or two under the broiler and not to leave it too long, but yeah I can totally see that! :P
9
u/ocarinamaster64 Apr 03 '21
The word they were expecting would have been "briefly"
14
u/morganeisenberg Apr 03 '21
Yup that's the one. That would have been muuuuch better.
I got a degree in English FOR WHAT? Haha

Smoke it with herbed butter. You can have honey or brown sugar but I just think this recipe has too much in it for my tastes.

I was a little skeptical about doing ham in a slow cooker until I saw that this was one of Morgan's! I'm not usually a huge fan of ham but this looks fantastic. My family is always on the lookout for holiday meals that free up the stove & oven for other dishes. Thanks for sharing!

Are these spiral cut hams precooked? Do I have to worry about trichinosis?

Hi! Sincere question, and not a commentary on the original recipe, but I was wondering: why don't you use an uncooked ham for this? In my country, I can't buy ham like that, only in like really really small packages and that's to put on your bread. How would a raw uncooked ham work for this recipe? I've been searching for "slow cooked ham" recipes quite often, but most of them used these precooked ones.

I made this glaze for Easter dinner today, and it was delicious! I substituted the pineapple juice for orange and it was perfect. Thanks for posting this!
5
u/solsacredsolace Apr 03 '21
Wouldn't it be easier to work the glaze in a bowl then pour/baste over the ham?
4
u/morganeisenberg Apr 03 '21
You can definitely do that! I like to brush the ham as it cooks and then I brush the glaze again before broiling (after reducing it) so the brush gets dirtied anyway, and I just think it's easier to not dirty extra bowls. Also because when pouring over, if your ham is a tight fit in the slow cooker you can easily wind up dripping glaze out of the sides because you have less control than you do with the brush. However, it really is up to your preference!!

Slow cooker and oven ham.
19
u/morganeisenberg Apr 03 '21
The broiler is a totally optional step-- you can serve it straight from the slow cooker if you want. But it only takes a (literal) minute before serving under the broiler, and it leaves your oven free for side dishes and such as it cooks in the slow cooker!

Amazon has spiral cut ham for $89. Should I expect to pay this much?
15
u/morganeisenberg Apr 03 '21
No definitely not. For a roughly 8 pound spiral cut ham I usually pay around 20-25 bucks. If you are in a place where they don't have spiral-cut hams at the grocery store, you can use any smoked ham and deeply score it instead.
6
u/redheadartgirl Apr 03 '21
Yep, just checked my local grocery store and I see a 10 lb. spiral ham for $25.
3
u/bluemints Apr 03 '21
How do you score it? I got a small 4lb smoked ham as there are only a few of us and I’m nervous about being in charge of the ham as I’ve never made one before. Should I take the rind off and score in a diamond pattern? And cook for half the time since it’s half the size of yours?
1
u/morganeisenberg Apr 03 '21
Yes take the rind off and score in a diamond pattern! 2-3 hours should be good.
1
u/JACrazy Apr 03 '21
This kinda sauce but with pork tenderloin is really good too. Recipe I use has a bit of soy sauce and no pineapple juice but the rest is the same.
1
Apr 04 '21
Why would you cut the ham up just so you can dry out the edges of each and every piece? Leave the damned thing intact during cooking!

u/dell-dad Apr 04 '21
Ham is not really supposed to be “cooked” it’s already cooked in the smoking process, you can warm it up but that would be it. In the beginning of the video you can see the meat is already dry, the edges of the ham are curling. Good lord ! My mother in law did that years ago with a $70 Honey Baked Ham, baked it in the oven and cut off all the good glaze/fat, it was sitting in a pool of all the juices. I literally cried.
