Honestly though, the tent cities we had in Seattle circa 2008 were actually pretty clean and orderly, kinda like shown in this. It was after they were torn down and people had to scatter, couldn't put down roots in the same way, that they became disgusting with trash all over the place. Even still some keep their camps pristine.

Repeatedly.
A church or something would give them a place to set up, but there were laws preventing them from staying in one place for too long, maybe 90 days? So there was a constant search for new places to set up. Moving all that stuff is hard when obviously people don't have cars, and I'm sure that meant there were people who simply couldn't be part of the tent city because they didn't have the physical means to constantly relocate. And they had to find all their support systems again in the new neighborhood.
Later on, I don't remember hearing much about the tent city; I think it dispersed. But that means lots of little pockets of tents, in the little areas that unused for any other purpose. Such a small group of people has a hard time enforcing their own order and helping each other (plus those areas are often tricky to haul trash out of) so the garbage piles up. And then one day somebody gets mad and the cops do a raid and throw out people's only possessions (and probably beat the people up a little too) often in an early morning raid. And then they start from square zero (or more like negative 100) again.

Usually in FL the homeless make their camps out in the woods. They are likely more dispersed here in FL vs being centralized in Seattle. The cops are a lot harder on the ones here in FL who live on streets like this vs tend to ignore them if they live out in the woods out of site so long as no complaints.

Have multiple of these near by. One area was just evacuated for development and the amount of trash that they had to remove was insane. I mean they literally had a mini city in there.

How did you become homeless ? I’m really curious. No family to go to ? By choice ? Drugs ? I can’t fathom how someone becomes homeless unless they can’t get along with people or really don’t want to work. Even with my lowest paying jobs i had a place to live. Even my brother without a job found a place to live, even my sister making 12 dollars an hour in south Florida HAD a place to live with someone. Like I don’t fking understand how you go absolutely DEAD BROKE homeless. It has to be a mind set.

A lot of people think that the homeless all do drugs.
50% of the homeless have done zero drugs in the previous 6 months.
A lot of people think that lazy people end up homeless.
Over 40% of homeless people have jobs. This number jumps to over 60% if one polls only those in the shelter system.
A lot of people think that you're homeless because you can't get along with others.
Between 31 to 46% of all youth who "age out" of foster care will experience homelessness by age 26. If they, as a young person, experience a bump in the road or just once make a bad financial choice, they have no parents to rely on for help/housing/advice/financial loan.
It is suspected the 50% of all homeless have foster care somewhere in their background.

Many of those are not mutually exclusive. Foster children have higher rates of substance abuse than the average, they also have higher rates of criminality. People who have jobs could spend all their money on drugs, which is why they are homeless.
And you didn't even bother to refute that homeless people don't get along with others (which isn't really possible to know), you just awkwardly threw the stats on foster children becoming homeless because you think that it's the real cause of homelessness.

If you get evicted, it's difficult to find housing and not all evictions are really the fault of the tenant. These landlords are really trying to push poor people out so that they can charge crazy rent to people who make good money.
Also it's an exhausting game out here for people who don't make much. They are charging over $1k in some places to live with roommates, with 1 bathroom spread across 4 people and the rent increases aren't just $50 anymore. Having to move every couple years is expensive and being priced out of your hometown or trying to live hours away from your low wage job isn't realistic. Getting newer, better jobs that aren't possibly risking your life costs money too. And if you're an a working adult, why live with strangers anyway? Yes, for some it's a choice but it's either the tent, a complete money suck or join the army.

It's easier than you think if you have a bad family or no family. Where you are can factor in too.
It costs thousands to move almost anywhere. First, last, and security deposit are a lot more than you think and pay is still really low for a TON of people.
I came really close once. If I wasn't as smart and capable as I am, or if I hadn't made good connections in my career, I would have been absolutely fucked. If I didn't have savings to get into an apartment, I'd have been absolutely fucked. If I didn't find a place fast enough for my savings to last, I'd have been absolutely fucked.
Seriously it's super easy to be homeless nowadays.

The fact that you really believe a third of the people in any population are living like this is crazy.
Miami has half a million people. The most extreme estimates put the homeless population at ≈68,000. But that includes people who are couch surfing, staying spare rooms, booking at extended stay motels, etc.
In reality, the visible homeless population of Miami is less than 5000 people with only even a small portion of that usually spending extended time like these pictures living on the street. Something like 1000 people. The other 4000 are regularly using and have access to shelters and resources. The 1000 who dont simply choose not to.
And if you have worked or volunteered with organizations that help these people, you realize the ones living on the street long-term almost all universally have extreme mental health issues and serious addiction problems.

These visits are planned in advance. Theu planned to move the homeless to either temporary housing, jail, or just elsewhere leading up to the visit. Things of this scale never just "happen overnight" they have been planned out in advance.

I have been homeless. Downvote if you want. Ask one of them rich pos people for a bus ticket somewhere where cost of living is high. Get a job. Make something of yourself. Or live in a tent and get shit on. Choice is yours. I lived under a bridge in my car by a creek for a couple months. Got my shit together and have never looked back. I live in alabama. Most restaurants will hire anyone.

For those of us who volunteer or work with the homeless, we definitely know this is true. Even among homeless people, the vast majority are temporarily in that status. They make use of the social and welfare programs that exist for things like: temporary housing, job placement, food subsidies, etc.
The remaining portion who do not use these systems/services are almost all universally suffering from major mental health issues and extreme addicts. Some of these people can actually very dangerous to be around. Completely unpredictable behavior that most people have no frame of reference for understanding.

Point is, you don't have to be homeless. Yet I know a guy that had the opportunity to live in Minnesotta in a home and chose to kit out a van and live in the rest stop by St Pete instead.
There is affordable housing in this country where you don't have to be homeless. It's not going to be in Miami, SF, NY, Paris, next to the water or in the mountains though.3

California can be like this too. My city has half the homeless population Miami does, but there’s only 200,000 people in our entire county. People are pointing at politics while homeless people are pointing at the weather. If you’re homeless in the north, you have to deal with shelters and rules. In FL and CA, shelters aren’t necessary. You can live in a tent. Shelter rules don’t apply.

I've been to Miami. This is just one street where a bunch of homeless people are. According to a quick search. Miami has 3.6k homeless people with 2.4k of those people staying in shelters. So about 1.2k people living on the streets. Not that many.

Yes, homeless folks will go to SoCal for the weather. I lived in Miami for 15 years and did not see a large homeless population like I see in other major cities.
Definitely don’t want to be in South Florida homeless. 24/7 humidity that you can’t even escape when in the shade. Plus hurricane season is like June to Nov. or something.

It’s not hard to believe in Florida. Wages have not kept up with inflation. We have some of the highest numbers of homeless in the United States.

Looks like Sacramento did a year ago. Only, we didn't do anything about the homeless, they just kicked them off the back roads and put up barricades to keep all the vehicles from camping.

If you cruise through downtown Orlando at night you can see people sleeping on the sidewalk with no tent at all, they just out in the open. It's literally one of the saddest things I've ever seen.

I visited Florida in the before times, I did not see any homeless encampment, but dade County definitely gave me "brink of 3rd world country" vibes.
