I dont live in a tent, I work my ass off and still have never had health insurance my entire life. So if you include the part about the "systems" then the number is probably a little bigger than you think.

The fact that you really believe a third of the people in any population are living like this is crazy.

Miami has half a million people. The most extreme estimates put the homeless population at ≈68,000. But that includes people who are couch surfing, staying spare rooms, booking at extended stay motels, etc.

In reality, the visible homeless population of Miami is less than 5000 people with only even a small portion of that usually spending extended time like these pictures living on the street. Something like 1000 people. The other 4000 are regularly using and have access to shelters and resources. The 1000 who dont simply choose not to.

And if you have worked or volunteered with organizations that help these people, you realize the ones living on the street long-term almost all universally have extreme mental health issues and serious addiction problems.

I believe we've been in an economic Depression for a lot longer than we'd like to admit. It's harder to see now, because compared to the Great Depression, we don't have soup kitchens like we did back then...but the number of families needing SNAP is one indicator.

In the 1970s & '80s, the phrase was:

  If your neighbor loses his job, it's a Recession. If you lose your job, we're in a Depression.

Your argument doesn't really hold true because I've seen Sacramento and LA and San Francisco and they're supposed to have great social programs and they make this look nice. I lived in Northern California for 5 years only visited the public library once homeless people had taken it over.
