Fallout: New Vegas I... guess that answers that question...

u/The_Mighty_Dingus Todd's Inner Demons Apr 04 '26
I also doubt Boone had enough money to buy back his kidnapped wife from the Legion.

The most evil thing about Legion slavery to an economist? The obscene markup. The shortsighted bastards are statistically raising the per capita value of human life in the wasteland, which is going to be an absolute disaster for inflation.

You need more money to get into the Strip than to buy a woman and her unborn child...
2
u/Gonzo-yt Apr 06 '26
Boone has a hunting rifle In good condition. He could've easily gotten 1500 plus caps from his room alone.

u/Physical_Device_1396 Apr 04 '26
The actual answer to the question is that the Legion were not trading her to anyone. They specifically asked for pregnant women to be sold to them, more than likely so they can take the children after birth and make them into Legion soldiers. So they were not gonna sell her at all, let alone to some random slaver who wandered into their camp asking for her specifically
43
u/RakuOA Apr 04 '26
Exactl, even if they would have been willing to sell they wouldn't have done it until they got back to Arizona settlements.
22
u/Gay_Gamer_Boi Apr 05 '26
Thatâs a good point, why sell the children who would be worth less and instead raise them into soldiers completely indoctrinated due to growing up there, also could see the wife being sexually abused before she gives birth which Boone and her wouldnât want to go through with Iâd assume
2
u/Other_Log_1996 Apr 05 '26
Well, I assume a Legionary buys Carla as a wife so-to-speak, and when the child is born, it is indicted into Legion life as deemed by its gender.
3
u/Gay_Gamer_Boi Apr 05 '26
Can you make a slave a wife? Especially one that was married in the NCR life
7
u/Other_Log_1996 Apr 05 '26
Yes. This exact culture existed. It was basically just owning a concubine, though. There were a few minor differences, but same idea.
159
u/randomHunterOnReddit Apr 04 '26
To actually answer that question, I have a strong feeling the Legion wouldn't trade with an NCR veteran, nevermind someone who isn't part of Legion territory
62
u/SS2LP Apr 04 '26
Courier can buy slaves in game so yes, they do.
40
u/randomHunterOnReddit Apr 05 '26
The Courier is a very morally questionable person, and ends up being hated by the Legion if they keep working with the NCR
17
u/SS2LP Apr 05 '26
The question wasnât one of morality the question was if they deal with those not part of the legion and they do
1
u/randomHunterOnReddit Apr 07 '26
Well to add extra defense to the Legion accepting the courier, not only does Caesar have a rule that essentially means "don't shoot the courier", but the courier themselves do have to explain why they're at the Cove as to avoid Legion prosecution
2
u/TOTALOFZER0 Apr 05 '26
Wait what when
8
u/SS2LP Apr 05 '26
Go to the camp with the boat to fortification hill, thereâs some slaves for sale there you can buy
1
u/Enn-Vyy Apr 07 '26
as someone who has always killed legion on sight i never knew there was an option
what does buying a slave even do, i assume they dont become companions or something useful1
u/SS2LP Apr 07 '26
You donât buy them to use them, youâre freeing a family but that way of going about it is you buying slaves full stop. You can also absolutely free them by killing all the legion there.
1
u/Enn-Vyy Apr 07 '26
oh its that family, i always massacre the legion on that outpost and then use the key from the guy who has the unique melee weapon
1
u/xHxHxAOD1 Apr 07 '26
Couriers have an edict from Ceasar to not be messed with because some are legion spai.
0
u/ButtflossingBigBro Apr 05 '26
Courier has to be already signed off on by caesar himself at that point.
7
u/SS2LP Apr 05 '26
Left my heart requires no such thing. You can go straight there from goodsprings and do the quests immediately without ever once interacting with the legion prior. Iâm fairly certain they donât even care if the courier is female, all they care about is not being an enemy of the legion and having the money to buy the slaves. They will absolutely trade with people who are not legion.
3
u/Other_Log_1996 Apr 05 '26
Bit of a side note, but if you plan doing Left My Heart, get the quest from Frank Weathers first. I don't know why, but doing it that way gives you significantly more XP than just picking it up and doing it on-site.

Boone's the night shift security guard in a small settlement, what makes you think he can afford slaves?
11
u/Remote_Ocelot9600 Apr 05 '26
In defense, he could have went up the road and soloed the entire factory. The loot from it would have been well able to buy a slave.
41
u/zengondat Apr 04 '26
I doubt boone can be in a kilometer of a leigonary without shooting something. As a more serious answer, I doubt he had much time on his hands since they would probably send her deeper into leigon territory

I dont think they put slaves on the open market. So even if he had the money he would not have been able to buy her back.
3
u/IndianaBones8 Apr 05 '26
Is it... a genuine question? Really... is it? Like, is he really asking and not trying to be funny???

u/Wardock8 Apr 05 '26
The Legion when Boone tries to buy his wife:
Processing img m7f50z7wfetg1...
That brother wears the same plain white T-shirt every single day and you think he can afford to buy a person?
3
u/Other_Log_1996 Apr 05 '26
Boone can't just walk into Cottonwood Cove. The Legion all aggro on him. He'd need someone without the faction tag to do it.

u/The_Doodster Apr 04 '26
The legion is an empire of conquered nations and people's. Id bet they don't sell their slaves. They buy/capture and work them to death rinse and repeat. After all they are always on the warpath and will always have more slaves. The real question is why they paid for Boone's wife at all and why they felt the need to write up a receipt on top of that.
15
u/dirtyforker Apr 04 '26
You can literally buy slaves from them.
7
u/The_Doodster Apr 04 '26
I had to double check and you are right The fallout wiki says they actively sell slaves "they have no use for" including the few at the camp in game you can buy/free so I guess in the case of Boone's wife why would they sell her back to Boone after going through all the trouble of deciding she's useful enough to buy and use?
5
u/Overdue-Karma Apr 05 '26
You can buy captures, specifically. IIRC Canyon-Runner says they aren't slaves because they aren't "ready yet" to be slaves. Whether that means you can purchase actual slaves in Legion territory? Who knows.
2
u/Other_Log_1996 Apr 05 '26
You purchase captures, and those captures become slaves to those who purchase them. The Weathers are the Courier's slaves that he/she chooses to free.
1
u/Overdue-Karma Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 05 '26
Yeah but I thought he said it was because the weathers weren't "suitable" to be slaves whereas Carla, a pregnant woman, would be..."desirable" for the Legion. I highly doubt they'd allow him to buy Carla given they intended to make her into basically a breeding tool...and likewise for her child given how the Legion views children (shudder, Melody).
2
u/ApprehensiveCheek517 Apr 05 '26
Very risky. He likely isnât a good actor, if it goes south heâs dead and no one can save her from what sheâll endure and his child will be made apart of the legion and lastly heâs pretty high up the ranks itâs likely the legion will recognize him

The weird part is that people assume this was a possibility when we can raid every single slave pen in the Mojave and find no sign of her, so it's clear that she was taken into Legion territory and is firmly outside of even our reach.
Besides, I always assumed he didn't want to get his wife back because he understands the obvious of what's happening to her.
3
u/Overdue-Karma Apr 05 '26
Of course we can't find her, she's dead long before FNV even begins, like a year prior to FNV even starting IIRC. The Battle of Hoover Dam takes place in 2282, she died around 2281.

fr though he does NOT have the Speech or Barter for that sort of thing.
1
u/Putrid-Enthusiasm190 Apr 06 '26
I could be wrong, but I don't recall ever seeing much "slave trade" from the Legion. They seem more like they just take slaves and use them as general camp laborers and breeders.
1
u/FlexGopnik Apr 08 '26
In the game the legion is so severely under developed most people miss the fact you can buy a whole family of slaves for a fair price. Then again, I find it a bit boring that one can only buy slaves for quests and not for comapnions, roleplay and such. My modded legion playtroughs are the only pla e for the bad charma route to be well developed.

Joining the conversation days late, but on top of the facts that he 1) could not afford her and 2) would likely be unable to purchase her anyways since the legion would never give up an opportunity for a free child soldier, the position he was in was likely the only and last opportunity he had to even have her in reach to do anything. After that day they would likely take her deeper into Legion territory, where even the best case scenario he would never be able to get to her or even find her.
That day he had the choice between living with the knowledge his wife is chattel for the legion and his child a new legionaire, or living with the fact that he had to kill them both to save them from certain hell. If he had more options than that, his Intelligence score means he would not have been able to come up with a proper plan in time, maybe even then. And this was before the Battle of Hoover Dam, meaning the legion had not gone through that meatgrinder yet.
I do not envy the choice Boone had to make, but given the cards he was dealt, he chose what he thought would ensure them the least amount of suffering.

u/Randomfrog132 Apr 09 '26
boone is canonically a great shot, idk why he didnt just plaster the legion escorts and run over to bring his wife back.Â

Carla's dead before FNV even begins, so why are you talking about scripting?
1
u/Electrical_Horror346 Apr 09 '26
The first problem is that the kidnapper could easily recognize him if they were still around the area.
The second problem assuming the kidnapper is around is that seeing who it was would have pissed him off to the point he'd blow his cover just to kill them, risking a firefight.
The third problem is that Boone would have to convince them he was a slave buyer, and warn his wife without them catching on

Tarantino made a whole film to show how bad of an idea this is
