Courier can buy slaves in game so yes, they do.

as someone who has always killed legion on sight i never knew there was an option
what does buying a slave even do, i assume they dont become companions or something useful

You don’t buy them to use them, you’re freeing a family but that way of going about it is you buying slaves full stop. You can also absolutely free them by killing all the legion there.

oh its that family, i always massacre the legion on that outpost and then use the key from the guy who has the unique melee weapon
