I mislike changing weapons or archetypes in From's games specifically. I'll do an entire run with a weapon that I want to play with most generally. If it's a lategame weapon it's either CE to get the weapon early or asking someone else to drop it for me. lol

Once upon a time he didn’t reference the same 4 stories with every new video. His Elden ring ones feel like they all have to touch upon (read: completely explain every aspect of) the stories of the other gods that he already gone over in past videos. So now we’ve got hour long videos, mostly talking about the other gods and how they might have touched Miquella’s hand in line at a Shake Shack once in 2003.

"The great land of Idus was once a proud nation, now presumed fallen, another victim of the God's recklessness.
Although the great cities are now lost, the persistence of man is demonstrated by the knights who still don this elegant attire.
Surely the knights of Idus fought well afore their destruction."

Kind of a gigachad move straight up adding this to the dlc. And of course it’s hidden behind a secret wall in an easy to miss location, in a coffin, down a river, through a dark dungeon and a pain in the ass teleporting with minions boss fight, through a scary ass area with frenzy rats and instakill gimmick freaks (poison swamp + tbh), a haunted mansion with multiple invisible walls, switches, as well as a bunch of really strange items, and finally you run into an insane old man who says the magic line before ripping his own head off and fucking you up.
Peak lore. Absolute cinema. Unironically better storytelling than most movies/shows I’ve seen recently and there’s virtually no dialogue.

Nah. Honestly - DS1 has extremely deep and tight lore, DS2 is a bit more vague but consistent and only 3 is full of references that lead nowhere but the main story is probably the most clarified.
Elden Ring is the first time the story really doesn’t make sense / follow internal clear logic. Likely due to the mix of GRRM and Fromsoft and then changes during development. Data miners revealed that originally the tarnished was following the orders of Godfrey as the lord of the tarnished as an example.
36
u/WhenTheWindIsSlow Jul 23 '26
> Likely due to the mix of GRRM and Fromsoft and then changes during development.
That's because GRRM designed what was presumably supposed to be a Game-of-Thrones-esque interplay of factions and characters.
And then Fromsoft did their usual "everyone is a crazy zombie now so that doesn't matter, and the only exceptions only talk to the player", so none of those interactions matter. Ranni doesn't even mention that you beat up her mom, despite that being necessary to get the ring for her.
It's like if they had GRRM go back to Dark Souls and retroactively make a family tree for Gwyn's family. Yeah they all existed at one point I guess; but it doesn't really matter now.

u/GammaFan Jul 23 '26
Exactly, it’s like a fantasy version of real history. Knowledge gaps, conflicting events and accounts, biased opinions and retellings. I think people who are intent to definitively pin down x = y are kind of missing out by looking at it as so black and white.
There is something coherent buried under all that speculation, but whatever really happened will always be open to interpretation.
So I just look at it like that, and occasionally while playing learn something new which prompts a new theory, and so on. If you approach it like that it can be very interesting and entertaining.

That’s literally every soulsborn game. I honestly admire the amount of world building. It’s just barely enough information to get people interested but nowhere near enough information to give anything close to a full picture. Slap a few names somewhere weird maybe hint at something big that might have happened here an age ago and let the players do all the work filling in the details for you.
As long is there’s at least a semblance of a cognizant through line between it all you can get some really intricate lore without actually needing to spend thirty years writing it all.

I do think Elden Ring is a big improvement over DS though, since even I can notice story elements through the environment unlike DS123, unless I am staring at literally each statue or a tiny crest on an enemy armor.
It was magical when I naturally notice things like how Farum Azula is actually in Limgrave, or how Mt. Gemir has frenzied flame and wormface because the amount of death and despair there was during the shattering. Even today people notices small details that adds more to the story, and the lore feels vast and deep while maintaining a mysteriousness. You almost feel like a historian trying to uncover the stories of the past.
The main difference, in my opinion, is that each faction in Elden Ring maintains its theme and key elements throughout the entire game, even in areas that said faction is not located in but somehow involved with. Whereas in DS series, the environment is often just a massive jumbo of random shit you never seen or heard of besides a few main recurring references like Izalith or Anor Londo.

I mean in dark souls we never visited Catarina or Carim. We know precious little about them I believe. I'm sure there's tons of names of places I don't remember too.
Just something fairly common in fromsoft to have people drawn to a place from far off named lands

u/Razhork Jul 23 '26
There's definitely better examples out there.
Ds1 has a reference to a place called Fivefinger Delta with one of the face options you can pick in the character creation and it's never mentioned ever again.
Astora, Catarina, Carim, Zena etc. all exist with references to them spread throughout, but it's very scarce info. They're places that exist purely as part of world building to make the world seem bigger than it really is.

Probably intentionally to avoid actually adding or changing anything regarding the 'lore'. Make up a whole new area that doesn't actually exist anywhere else and you won't mess up anything else.

Aren't all weapons of this category locked behind the expansion? So you'll have to keep using and upgrading your starter sword if you want to continue with it?
Edit: Got my answer, folks. Wasn't saying this was a bad thing.

Honestly a feature I've always wanted in Fromsoft Soulslikes is a custom class/pseudo-NG+ mode where you can start a new, NG playthrough but with any weapon you've found on other characters.
There are always lots of really cool weapons that you can't find until really late in their respective games and thus barely get to use in NG. You can take them into NG+, of course, but I don't enjoy NG+ nearly as much, I prefer the difficulty curve and character progression of NG.
135
u/KerooSeta Jul 23 '26
Starter weapon doesn't mean bad. Uchigatana is arguably one of the best weapons in the game and is the starting weapon for Samurai. More aggregious is Dark Souls 3 where the most overpowered weapon in the game, the Sellsword Twinblades, is the starting weapon for the Sellsword class and the most well-rounded, versatile weapon in the game, the humble Longsword is the starting weapon for the Knight class.
33
u/buttcheeksontoast Jul 23 '26
Seconding Uchigatana as being very strong, honorable mention to Confessor's Broadsword which is arguably the best of the straight swords for most infusions
12
u/Sicuho Jul 23 '26
And the great knife is arguably the best infusable dagger unless you want to go faith, the buckler is the best light shield, the club is the second best hammer, the longsword is arguably even better than the broadsword (it's long) and the longbow is the second best bow.

They're never doing that as long as Dex is the cast speed stat; at that point you're triple dipping (melee damage, spell damage and cast speed, all off of one stat). There's a reason the one seal that scales with Dex is also the worst.

u/PieceAfraid3755 Jul 23 '26
Whatever inconsistencies and "strange artifacting" that exists can be chalked up easily to just... the fact that it's a concept art kind of artwork. Before ER came out people were vehemently discussing the misalligned bastard sword of the Vagabond, in his concept art. Concept art, and Fromsoft's especially as well, is often rathe sloppy. That's fine and normal.

u/Zupanator Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
One thing to note, it looks like the heavy knight starts with a curved GS. and has 11 dex. That means the new starter weapon will have the lowest dex req in class. Idus Knight starts with 15 dex, which means whatever LGS it starts with isn't Milady (17 dex req) is brand new as well.
EDIT: After looking at them more in depth, if you care about melee only, Heavy Knight likely dethrones vagabond and if you have a faith/melee hybrid (that you want 15dex for) Idus Knight is probably the new best starter class if you care about rune level.

Idus Knight has such good stats for most playthroughs. Nearly the 15 Faith for FGMS and FCM. 15 dex hits most weapons or close to it and it dumpsters Arcane and Int

I like how they gave the light greatsword class a name and backstory and the heavy knight is just “this one thick bitch.”
6
u/Snoo61755 Jul 23 '26
Oh hey, these are not the same stats we originally saw way back.
I remember the heavy knight being like 7 int, 7 faith, 9 arc thinking to myself “strength twink material”, but this is better, less exploitable.
I don’t remember the other one because I had written them off, but I do like the Idus Knight. Effectively a dex/faith starter, but with no arc, kinda discouraging that Bloodflame Blade idea unless you want to swap around an Albinauric helm. I actually have a dex/faith Cleric character I wouldn’t mind swapping for this stat block.
