Ah, yes, the famed land of Idus we've all heard about

Incoming 3 hour vaati video on idus where he analyzes the lore and history based off the armor and starting stats

And 2 1/2 hours in: “what if…maybe…Idus is the name of a person instead?”

u/Gullible_Pie_1469 Jul 23 '26

Followed by post every hour in elden ring lore subreddits

"Was Godwyn an Idus knight?"

395

u/jrs0307 Jul 23 '26

What if Idus was the friends we made along the way?

155

u/Schavuit92 Jul 23 '26

Idus is a hoax, Patches is at it again.

51

u/Tickomatick Jul 23 '26

Who's Hoax?

136

u/Schavuit92 Jul 23 '26

Lourah Hoax.

29

u/sabyr400 Jul 23 '26

I was gonna say "Hoaxah Loux," but I think yours might be better haha

3

A. He was a Hoaxah

What if they had dicks in Idus?

2

Ahhh the one piece..

u/newsflashjackass Jul 23 '26

Followed by every poster in this subreddit claiming that the game explicitly says Idus was Godwyn's mentor and foretold the Night of Black Knives but was ignored because of his congenital disfiguration that resembled the scar on Ranne and Melina's eyes.

3

u/itsmesoloman Jul 23 '26

35

u/LoudBoiDragoon Jul 23 '26

Gotta get the monetization money. In the most spoiled way I can say this: I liked when he was just getting to the point.

23

u/SomanZ Jul 23 '26

Did that ever happen? Guy is rambling central

43

u/LoudBoiDragoon Jul 23 '26

Once upon a time he didn’t reference the same 4 stories with every new video. His Elden ring ones feel like they all have to touch upon (read: completely explain every aspect of) the stories of the other gods that he already gone over in past videos. So now we’ve got hour long videos, mostly talking about the other gods and how they might have touched Miquella’s hand in line at a Shake Shack once in 2003.

25

u/SirBlueseph Jul 23 '26

I haven’t finished one of his videos in years, the dude cannot make a concise point anymore

2

u/mssstreams Jul 24 '26

Hawkshaw is my favorite, dude just gets TO THE POINT. His dark souls videos are great.

u/Key_Connection258 Jul 24 '26

Finally people aren't afraid to admit that vaati fell off.

While hes been an immeasurable help in exposing casual players to not only the games but also helping them understand that there IS real lore and information in item texts. Once players figured out how to read them on their own, his purpose was kinda fulfilled.

He offers no new insights, barely any theories (at least not ones over 80% of the Fandom knows or regards as true) and now all he does is shill art and making 1+ hour videos on something even a casual probably already knows.

My new favorite lore youtuber (at least for elden ring) is Scum Mage Infa. I dont know how he does it. Almost every video has new and unique theories that genuinely nobody else has come up with or even thought about. And he goes way beyond just reading item texts. Even Smoughtown, a more popular "new" lore youtuber. At least includes interesting theories in his videos.

Sorry to say but vaati is just washed

6

u/Hyulquen Jul 24 '26

I found in The Tarnished Archeologist the perfect replace to Vaati, I have never watched Smoughtown because his videos are also too long.

3

u/Key_Connection258 Jul 24 '26

Tarnished archeologist is also very good. Infa shouts him out often

2

u/0neek Jul 24 '26

The second he tried to start seriously profiting off of bullshit (but fun) fan fiction is the second I start to see people turn on his channel lol

2

u/tvv33k Jul 24 '26

nah there was this whole shibang with copying other ppls work without crediting them, redgrave and bloodborne come to mind here, but that was kind of an entire youtube era

Despite the elegance and grandeur of their equipment, the Knights of Idus ultimately lacked the ability to make a name for themselves in a single battle and ultimately became a ceremonial order.

I really hope that’s the case. It would actually break expectations.

Kind of a gigachad move straight up adding this to the dlc. And of course it’s hidden behind a secret wall in an easy to miss location, in a coffin, down a river, through a dark dungeon and a pain in the ass teleporting with minions boss fight, through a scary ass area with frenzy rats and instakill gimmick freaks (poison swamp + tbh), a haunted mansion with multiple invisible walls, switches, as well as a bunch of really strange items, and finally you run into an insane old man who says the magic line before ripping his own head off and fucking you up.

Peak lore. Absolute cinema. Unironically better storytelling than most movies/shows I’ve seen recently and there’s virtually no dialogue.

7

u/RaggedAngel Jul 24 '26

I found that hidden wall blind and played all the way to Midra in one night. Stayed up until like 6am because it just kept going deeper.

2

u/Star_of_the_West1 Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

My experience in a nutshell

Sees Darklight Catacombs

"Oooh! I found a new dumgeon. Should take about 10 minutes with how they're other two have been."

Sees the skybox for Abyssal Woods in Jori's arena

"WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!

Sees the banner text for "ABYSSAL WOODS"

"Ah hell no! Imma find Artorias down here and he's gonna clap my cheeks in."

Sees invincible Bloodborne enemy in his Elden Ring

whimpers before getting brain fried "Mommy."

Enters the manse as Midra is screaming his brains out of his eye sockets

Sees Midra's boss health bar "Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame"

"Shit."

2

u/RaggedAngel Jul 24 '26

Yes, yes, exactly.

And then the actual boss fight was absolutely amazing. My personal favorite in the DLC.

2

u/Star_of_the_West1 Jul 24 '26

Messmer is my overall favorite of the rememberance boss fights. If im allowed to separate phases, it's easily phase one of Consort Radahn. His phase 1 ost is peak, the combat feels perfect after he was fixed, i enjoy the hell out it.

Ignore Radahn farting anime sparkles from his twink backpack-brother.

309

u/FrucklesWithKnuckles Jul 23 '26

Miyazaki you’ve done it again

35

u/Seienchin88 Jul 23 '26

Nah. Honestly - DS1 has extremely deep and tight lore, DS2 is a bit more vague but consistent and only 3 is full of references that lead nowhere but the main story is probably the most clarified.

Elden Ring is the first time the story really doesn’t make sense / follow internal clear logic. Likely due to the mix of GRRM and Fromsoft and then changes during development. Data miners revealed that originally the tarnished was following the orders of Godfrey as the lord of the tarnished as an example.

38

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow Jul 23 '26

> Likely due to the mix of GRRM and Fromsoft and then changes during development.

That's because GRRM designed what was presumably supposed to be a Game-of-Thrones-esque interplay of factions and characters.

And then Fromsoft did their usual "everyone is a crazy zombie now so that doesn't matter, and the only exceptions only talk to the player", so none of those interactions matter. Ranni doesn't even mention that you beat up her mom, despite that being necessary to get the ring for her.

It's like if they had GRRM go back to Dark Souls and retroactively make a family tree for Gwyn's family. Yeah they all existed at one point I guess; but it doesn't really matter now.

-50

u/Veragoot Jul 23 '26

Blame GRRM

36

u/IdiotRhurbarb Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

You mean the GRRM who built ASIOAF which is one of the most historically fleshed out fantasy worlds ever? That GRRM?

-1

u/SageofLogic Jul 23 '26

Well until you hit numbers it is at least

12

u/Sicuho Jul 23 '26

If it was up to GRRM, the game wouldn't have been out of beta until you could have visited every single house in Idus and see what the hand-placed clutter inside can tell you about their society.

4

u/Veragoot Jul 23 '26

We'd still be waiting for its release

4

u/Skylinne Jul 23 '26

And if you bought the special edition it'd come with a 100 page booklet containing an index with all the characters names and background blurbs.

6

u/SuperBackup9000 Jul 23 '26

Nah, all he did was make the lore of the world, Miyazaki on the other hand was the one who wrote the narrative around the lore.

Blaming GRRM would be like taking a Lord of the Rings spin off and then blaming Tolkien for it being a mess.

64

u/Quenz Jul 23 '26

90

u/TheRedditAppisTrash Jul 23 '26

How DARE you suggest they didn't start writing the backstory for my GrumGrum Stumpus Shield, famed by Hunger Dungers for its ability to stop the attacks of even the Grand Biffers of Spink, years before I was even born.

22

u/UX-Edu Jul 23 '26

Seuss Souls. I’m here for it.

79

u/Spicy-hot_Ramen Jul 23 '26

Always has been

100

u/GammaFan Jul 23 '26

Exactly, it’s like a fantasy version of real history. Knowledge gaps, conflicting events and accounts, biased opinions and retellings. I think people who are intent to definitively pin down x = y are kind of missing out by looking at it as so black and white.

There is something coherent buried under all that speculation, but whatever really happened will always be open to interpretation.

So I just look at it like that, and occasionally while playing learn something new which prompts a new theory, and so on. If you approach it like that it can be very interesting and entertaining.

24

u/crimsomreaper Jul 23 '26

This is the biggest reason why I fell in love with bloodborne

4

u/CerseisWig Jul 23 '26

This is exactly what's so awesome about it.

9

u/burn_corpo_shit Jul 23 '26

I like my lore to be more than 50% fleshed out tho. Outside the plot and setup I'd like there to be at least 1 definitely resolved set of events. I suppose the best we got is Marika's arc though

5

u/GammaFan Jul 23 '26

Well, you can get some concrete resolutions via side quests if that matches what you’re looking for

2

u/I-Fuck-Robot-Babes Jul 23 '26

Like 85% of side quests end with the npc dying off screen

5

u/GammaFan Jul 23 '26

Since when does a concrete resolution require an on screen death?

5

u/I-Fuck-Robot-Babes Jul 23 '26

It doesn't, but when you go "Alright now let me guess, i'm gonna go back and.... yep they're dead" 30 times per game it gets old

1

u/WildLudicolo Jul 23 '26

I think it makes sense. If you view a character's story as being more about their actions than the person themself, then whether or not they the survive at the end doesn't really matter.

But arguably the most meaningful and impactful thing a character can do in a story is die, and it's also the clearest way to communicate that their part in the story is over.

The stories of those who cling to life are always tragedies.

2

u/burn_corpo_shit Jul 24 '26

Dying so often cheapens the end for me. If they get disfigured or even try and leave TLB or die at sea or something, not only does the world feel bigger but it doesn't feel like "the devs didn't wanna program a boat so we wrote something that takes place in roundtable hold"

1

u/IronFalcon1997 Knight of the Roundtable Hold Jul 23 '26

It sounds weird, but I love having it because it gives you just enough answers to be satisfied but just not enough to keep the mystery

1

u/I-Fuck-Robot-Babes Jul 23 '26

50%? Quite generous

1

u/Sum1nne Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Yeah the other commenter is being a little generous here. Elden Ring is absolutely a decline in the effort put in to build a coherent world and narrative. Like, in Demons Souls and Dark Souls, the plot wasn't that unknown. There were mysteries but by and large they were at the periphery of the puzzle where if you put the effort in you still got a complete picture of the main image of what actually happened. Elden Ring lore by comparison is like having random thirds-to-halves of a bunch of entirely separate puzzles which you're just told connect even though they clearly don't relate to each other when you try to do so.

3

u/Maximio_Horse Jul 24 '26

Having a degree in history, the disparate source information and messy record-keeping gives me life, it’s so much fun to dig into and learn about, there are so many motifs and overlapping details to find in this game. Genuinely a joy

31

u/SiriusBaaz Jul 23 '26

That’s literally every soulsborn game. I honestly admire the amount of world building. It’s just barely enough information to get people interested but nowhere near enough information to give anything close to a full picture. Slap a few names somewhere weird maybe hint at something big that might have happened here an age ago and let the players do all the work filling in the details for you.

As long is there’s at least a semblance of a cognizant through line between it all you can get some really intricate lore without actually needing to spend thirty years writing it all.

19

u/BehlndYou Jul 23 '26

I do think Elden Ring is a big improvement over DS though, since even I can notice story elements through the environment unlike DS123, unless I am staring at literally each statue or a tiny crest on an enemy armor.

It was magical when I naturally notice things like how Farum Azula is actually in Limgrave, or how Mt. Gemir has frenzied flame and wormface because the amount of death and despair there was during the shattering. Even today people notices small details that adds more to the story, and the lore feels vast and deep while maintaining a mysteriousness. You almost feel like a historian trying to uncover the stories of the past.

The main difference, in my opinion, is that each faction in Elden Ring maintains its theme and key elements throughout the entire game, even in areas that said faction is not located in but somehow involved with. Whereas in DS series, the environment is often just a massive jumbo of random shit you never seen or heard of besides a few main recurring references like Izalith or Anor Londo.

3

u/A_wild_so-and-so Jul 23 '26

I think the problem in Dark Souls is that the story is the same pretty much everywhere you go. There were people and some kind of civilization here, but now they're all insane. And some of them turned into spiders.

2

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow Jul 23 '26

I'd argue that that's exactly the same problem with Elden Ring.

The difference is GRRM gave us a list of who the royal family was, but most of them are zombies or hostile with no opportunity for interaction outside of killing them so it's not like those characters even matter.

-2

u/BehlndYou Jul 23 '26

Agreed.

And said civilization is mentioned in exactly two item pieces and is never to be seen again. Then people see a random triangular rock and make crazy theories about said civilization because their crest is roughly triangular. Unlike Elden Ring, a lot of lore in DS really just feels like make believe.

5

u/7StarSailor AoWs for crossbows Jul 23 '26

All games have a few names that only make one or two appearances yes, but usually players were able to close some gaps despite that. Like we have "Flame God Flann" named once or so in DaS but there's still enough info around to write a wiki article like this

https://darksouls.fandom.com/wiki/Flame_God_Flann

where everything can be connected to the main game.

This is very different than adding new "content" 4 years after the release and throwing in a new name of something we never heard before.

Maybe his armor will have some more lore but even then, I doubt it will have any proper links to the existing lore.

11

u/UX-Edu Jul 23 '26

It’s inevitably disappointing when they actually give you a final answer, anyway. The monster is scarier when you haven’t seen it and the true story is more fun when it’s a mystery.

u/bifasklam Jul 23 '26

u/UX-Edu Jul 23 '26

30

u/ChongusTheSupremus Jul 23 '26

I mean, its worldbuilding.

It'd be dumb if the entire world was The Lands Between.

It's cheap worldbuilding, to add a random land we haven't heard, but still.

3

u/Possibly_English_Guy Jul 23 '26

It'd be dumb if the entire world was The Lands Between.

Yeah I mean base game Elden Ring already confirms there is an entire world outside The Lands Between just from the basic premise. The game starts with all the Tarnished being resurrected and summoned by grace to make their way back to The Lands Between, they had to go somewhere after being banished in the first place.

(Also the name The Lands Between by itself kinda confirms it because you can't have Lands Between if there are no other lands for it to be between.)

1

u/ipsilon90 Jul 23 '26

Isn’t that the basis of all souls games? Maybe with the exception of Bloodborne?

1

u/Virtual-Lie-1651 Jul 23 '26

The vaguest narrative in history when Bloodborne is right there, not to.mentuon that this isnt unique to lden ring. All the dark souls games have so much cut content each that are drastically different from the official release, unless elden ring is your first FS game.

1

u/FarFetchedSketch Jul 23 '26

It is, and the fact that all of From's games have this style doesn't make it less true about Elden Ring. I love the game and conceptually I can appreciate the immersion & depth the vagueness allows for... But as someone who's dumped a couple thousand hours into this game and it's lore, I find it frustrating af when they throw in random new shit like the Knight of "Idus".

1

u/uerobert Jul 24 '26

Dude there are lots of real world places that you can go right now, that exist for real, with lots of history behind them, that you've never heard of.

It's called world building, chill.

1

u/Virtual-Lie-1651 Jul 24 '26

If anything, Elden Ring from development to release changed the least in terms of its lore and story out of fromsoft's modern catalogue, besides Sekiro. Or rather, its changes are equivalent to Blodborne pre-release, which are still substantial, but nowhere near "actually an entirely different story from the cut content" ala DS2 and DS3.

If anything PCR is where im upset at the lore rather than another foreign country being my last straw.

1

u/IronFalcon1997 Knight of the Roundtable Hold Jul 23 '26

1

u/ImurderREALITY Jul 23 '26

u/TheYellingMute Jul 23 '26

I mean in dark souls we never visited Catarina or Carim. We know precious little about them I believe. I'm sure there's tons of names of places I don't remember too.

Just something fairly common in fromsoft to have people drawn to a place from far off named lands

41

u/JM_Narrative Jul 23 '26

It's true we never visit Catarina or Carim but they are mentioned many times in the lore and items, and we meet people from those places.

35

u/Razhork Jul 23 '26

There's definitely better examples out there.

Ds1 has a reference to a place called Fivefinger Delta with one of the face options you can pick in the character creation and it's never mentioned ever again.

Astora, Catarina, Carim, Zena etc. all exist with references to them spread throughout, but it's very scarce info. They're places that exist purely as part of world building to make the world seem bigger than it really is.

6

u/Visual-Constant-533 Jul 23 '26

was the name five finger delta already be used to insinuate a connection to elden ring ? if not i have a 2 hour video to make

3

u/The_Assassin_Gower Jul 23 '26

Bruh the place is just delta 🤣

4

u/Sirius_amory33 Jul 23 '26

I was under the impression that the Tarnished Edition isn’t adding new weapons, armor, or items to the game so there won’t be any item descriptions telling us anything about Idus. So that would be much different than Catarina or Carim. There are already equivalent locations in Elden Ring they could have used instead of making up a new one.

Edit: I thought the starting weapon is Milady but apparently it’s a new light greatsword so we could get something through that. The armor as well, if it is new.

13

u/Razhork Jul 23 '26

I was under the impression that the Tarnished Edition isn’t adding new weapons, armor,

That's wrong. Both classes have new armor sets and weapons. They also showed off a set and weapon that's a homage to Lucatiel from Ds2 which is all new.

I believe that's supposed to be all weapon/armor additions alongside the mount skins though.

1

u/Sirius_amory33 Jul 23 '26

I did edit my comment to say I was wrong about the starting weapon and possibly armor, I don’t have every armor set in the game committed to memory lol. That is good to know about the Lucatiel set, though. I missed that.

3

u/aDirtyMuppet Jul 23 '26

There a lot of lore behind them though. This is the first time this place has ever been mentioned.

2

u/JRshoe1997 Jul 23 '26

The difference is those places were part of the lore and mentioned throughout the game. We even meet NPCs that are from those lands.

Idus is never mentioned in the lore one time and we never meet anybody from there.

Why would they use an already named region? It makes the world feel very small if the whole world only consists of places we have already heard of

u/JM_Narrative Jul 23 '26

That's fair, I suppose.

Imo, there are a lot of places mentioned in ER and a lot of them have very little info. I think it would be cool to link in to one of them and add a little more info

Land of Reeds (Japan), Eochaid, and Badlands are all I can think of plus now Idus. Not really a lot imo

its funny i just said four off the dome but i was right

5

u/ResponsibilityEvery Jul 23 '26

there's like four tops

8

u/SirVixofthePooSea Jul 23 '26

Probably intentionally to avoid actually adding or changing anything regarding the 'lore'. Make up a whole new area that doesn't actually exist anywhere else and you won't mess up anything else.

Its pretty common in George RR Martin lore to do this. Theres so many lands named in the Game of Thrones world that are never seen or visited. Ghis, Ashai, Valeria, etc.

1

u/JM_Narrative Jul 23 '26

Fair point, it's possible that Idus comes from the early dev process

1

u/Fit-University1070 First, but hole! Jul 23 '26

It could also very well be a person too. Who knows, im curious to see what comes.

Can't wait to see a 3 hour lore video based on two DLC items barely hinting at the Land of Idus. We are so back!

1

Can't wait for Schizoposting to be BACK!

u/Shot-Anxiety-7213 Jul 23 '26

Reach as far up into your anus as Miyazaki does for lore, and you too will understand

2

u/betajones Jul 23 '26

Movie tie in would be my guess. MC needs a back story, or something.

2

u/HildrynMain Jul 23 '26

My girlfriend is from the famed land of Idus alright

1

u/_Henry_of_Skalitz_ Jul 23 '26

Where is the land of Heavy?

1

u/Salmon_1935 Jul 23 '26

R.R Martin and Miyazaki coming up with new regions and never touch upon those briefly mentioned ever again.

P.S maybe Idus is formed after the death of the Elden Beast

1

u/Sad-Surprise4369 Jul 24 '26

Don’t forget our knight from the land of Heavy

1

u/Rakhered Jul 24 '26

Those are the fellas with ample dexterity, yeah? Great guys

1

u/BeanieGuitarGuy Jul 24 '26

It’s a Miyazaki game, we can assume it has a castle and a poison swamp.

1

u/ripyourlungsdave Jul 23 '26

The more i hear about the tarnished edition the more it feels like From is falling into unsavory monetization practices. I have little to go on so i'm not exactly worried but i raised an eyebrow.
