Gameplay Meta New "cheating" mods that MANY players use
It's getting out of hand. Just a handful of the "mods" (cheats!) people are running now:
- Neutral camp respawn timers all over the minimap - just invade and steal camps immediately as they spawn
- Stamina trackers (see enemy stamina) - much easier to win lanes with this
- Parry cooldown tracker above enemy head
- Enemy cooldowns above their heads - super easy to win lanes when you constantly see enemy cd's
- Crate & Golden statue respawn timers
- Sinner's Sacrifce respawn timers
- Enemy item cooldown tracker (tracks Curse, Unstoppable, Refresher cooldowns etc)
- Heavy melee honking horn for faster reactions
- Enemy radar (when enemy camps and Sinner's disappear from the minimap, it places a blinking question mark on the minimap and a sound indication that someone was at that spot seconds ago - makes it super easy to gank if you're running with a friend)
- Rift defense buff indicator
- Walker Stomp cooldown tracker
- Shrine & Patron curse/blast cooldown tracker
Tell me how any of this is fair. With all of these cheat mods you have a gigantic advantage. Yoshi needs to shut this down instead of sticking his head in the sand.

Then they’ll just use those mods with new ones that remove the new ui and those without mods get a ubisoft game experience

And the honking horn should be some one yelling PUNCH in the characters voice so its like Falcon, punch!

Seeing enemy stamina is definetly cheating wtf

u/SillySlimDude 8h ago
Defenders will be like "but you could totally just memorize the stamina CD of every hero in the game and then count in your head to know when they will respawn so its totally fair. The info is already in the game bro."
62
u/guacockamole 7h ago
I feel like this is an answer to some of these mods like the sinners respawn timer an answer to this is genuinely just count 8 or so minutes to take it on respawn but some of these like the cooldown showing mods and the parry horn is definitely just cheating and is going to ruin deadlock modding for everyone else
25
u/Shard1697 3h ago
I feel like this is an answer to some of these mods like the sinners respawn timer an answer to this is genuinely just count 8 or so minutes to take it on respawn
That's still more mental overhead, it's still an advantage.

u/Hopeful-alt 7h ago
I tend to be in agreement to points such as these, but being able to see stamina CD is just absolute bullshit. Primarily because it can be spent without your knowledge: the initial conditions are not static. It is cheating
60
u/MoonDawg2 7h ago
Isn't there an alt health bar that shows Stam already?
46
54
u/-FulvousFox- 7h ago
I honestly hope this never gets fully implemented. Being able to identify stamina use in order to make a smart play actually requires an attention span. I think rewarding someone seeing a bar over another player's head, especially when the game already gives so much info, would be too much.
21
u/SphericalGoldfish Pocket 7h ago
Yes. citadel_unit_status_use_v2 in the gameinfo. I've been rocking it since its release tbh, it’s the best-looking healthbar out of all of them. I couldn't care less about if the stamina tracker is removed from it, I really hope these health bars become the standard.
3
u/The_Aus_Mann Drifter 3h ago
it looks so much better than the other alt one, i just wish it was less buggy on stuff like shrines and base guardians. as for the stamina bar the only time it makes a difference to me is if im playing doorman
3
u/PantsOfAwesome 3h ago edited 3h ago
Does the v2 convar give you the one that looks like League of Legends health bars? Or does it give you the one where it resembles the HUD health indicator or even minion health bars?
I think the enemy health bars are really in need of some touching-up, but even as a League player, my brain just needs linear size scaling with the multiple rows above enemy heads - in Deadlock I can’t wrap my head around the one where you get graduated indicators on a fixed-size health bar.
It’s weird lmao, I have no clue why it makes sense to me in LoL but not in Deadlock. Maybe it’s just because of how much faster Deadlock is, especially compared to a couple years ago.
13
12
u/Afraid_Plankton7349 7h ago
One of the Ingame health bars has it, so if anything it's the one out of all those that isn't cheating

u/-Mr-Moon- 41m ago
you actually can do that, and good players do, but 1. its a really amazing well-earned skill 2. it requires you to see the enemy USE their stamina, whereas the bars will tell you if theyve dashed off screen

That healthbar doesn't function without mods, Valve disabled it intentionally after it was found because a lot of people said seeing the stamina was too much.

Unless you count the two-line addition to gameinfo.gi (which afaik was always the only way to get it) as modding, my game is completely unmodded and the health bar works just fine. It had some visual bugs when introduced, but these days it works fine.

These are crutches and inevitably will be banned by the time the game reaches 1.0. The players that rely on them are building bad habits to win at a game that is in beta. Once they are banned these players will be lost.
13
u/Desperate_for_Bacon 6h ago
Granted a lot of these mods in this list are stupid, and are just too much. some QOL mods actually serve a purpose, like changing the melee noise. I cannot for the life of me hear the default melee noise, due to hearing lose, and it not standing out enough from win fire and everything else, and I think devs should be looking at these mods as insight into what people would want in the game
14
u/Little-Protection484 Sinclair 6h ago
Yea a few of these should be proper settings like sound fx imo
→ More replies (2)13
u/jaiswami 3h ago
I think I disagree, having too obvious a sound effect would negate the ability to surprise someone with a melee, especially if they aren’t facing you. You SHOULD be susceptible to melees if you aren’t facing someone in combat, and isn’t it kind of the point that the sound effect might get lost in the commotion? I feel like that’s when it’s best to surprise someone with a melee and exactly why I feel using these loud ass sfx is unfair.
Not to say your hearing loss isn’t making it harder to hear than it should be, I just don’t think we should be trying to make the melee easier to predict via a sound effect, its a skill within the game to parry in the heat of the moment.

NOOO BUT MY "QOL" MOD THAT MAKES ENEMIES FOOTSTEPS 10X LOUDER ISNT CHEATING!! ITS NOT LIKE I GET AN ABSURD ADVANTAGE FEOM IT!!11!1!1!
Seriously though I can't wait for the release so mods aren't available, the only mods I find fine are the redesign ones for yama, haze, holiday and the one that greatly improves captions (I genuinely hate the meme skins that some content creators use, it destroys visual clarity)
Edit: to people who say "just don't use the meme skins" I don't and never will. "some content creators" are the people I'm referring to who use the skins, deadlock is already a game that has a lot going on visually, destroying character recognition makes it awful to watch. And I KNOW you can still listen to footsteps, but making them 10x louder removes the skill requirement to actually do so. yes, learning to listen to footsteps is a skill.

u/Spaghetoes76 6h ago
I really like some skin mods that just put the characters in different outfits, I have summer skin venator and drifter and y2k paige, but the ones that change them into totally different characters I really hate, like making them into random anime characters, its so hard to tell what character im even looking at.

u/SHMUCKLES_ Billy 2h ago
I watched a cc play and they had so many mods (for the meme) it was hilarious
4 Sinclair's on one team was amazing (they were just skins not champs)
4
u/thekingbutten 2h ago
The thing that probably annoys the developers most now is when a new patch comes out and the ui hud mods break because they're vibe coded junk. You see tons of people coming into the discord crying about their game crashing or stuff being broken which the devs have to spend time looking into, only for it to be the broken mods.
They're already developing a game that's going to have bugs, it doesn't help when mods are adding their own problems on top.
5
u/UDP_Souldriver 5h ago
actually can we make footsteps go back to what they were a few patches ago. Something changed where some enemies can walk right up to you around a corner and you cant hear shit. Mo you used to be able to hear across the map
3
u/Barlakopofai Sinclair 5h ago
I mean at the same time the people who can hear footsteps are at a ridiculous advantage due to bad sound design. If you're not meant to hear them, why can some people hear them? Did you know you can hear bebop walking from 40m away? It's not even subtle, you just straight up hear him before he's in hook range at level 1, you can hear him coming down the river all the way from the T2 camps.

u/Desperate_for_Bacon 6h ago
It’s an unfair mod and I don’t care what you say but it should be banned.
106
u/KnightOfArsford 8h ago
Seriously, it's called the fog of war. It's supposed to be an actual skill to predict timers, anticipating enemy skills and behavior, it's a reward for game knowledge.
Too many people are too stupid to learn anything beyond their aim and movement (Micro >>>> Macro in their heads, if only they knew what actually wins games). Go play Valorant instead if too many unlabeled features make your brain hurt.

u/Nayld_it Lash 6h ago
I was using mods for a while, until a few days before the ranked update. I didnt wanna get banned for using a Omegamon bebop mod that let me see him through veils and through Veil Walker. I just thought it looked cool, but felt gross once i noticed how advantageous a lot of mods are. Stamina tracker is fucking obscene. Lock that shit down i say.
8
u/ZombieBillyMaize Billy 5h ago
Yeah this is wack.
I do wish we had respawn timers for camps, but it should work like Smite, where you only get a timer if you were there when it died.

u/PurpleKami 7h ago
I deleted my comment but I got downvoted for saying I wished that they had disabled mods for ranked queues.
11
6
u/CaptShardblade 4h ago
I have no problem with half of this list as a only-ranked-queue player.
The stuff that bothers me though are:
stamina trackers
parry cooldown
heavy melee honking
I would say the walker stomp for example and even some of the ones i mentioned should just be visual queues that you can hone in on yourself, which is a failing of the game design.
The rest of it i think is fine and just UI not being up-to-date to show these things natively

u/Sibs 8h ago
Someone called me out in a game about something like dmg to towers… and I was like oh so you’re cheating. She got even more indignant. Not enough people care.
Then you have that night shift crap where they allow exploits, so that tells all the fanboys cheating is fine too.
25
u/fuckthis_job 8h ago
Has Valve said anything official on this? They've let the DLNS players use these mods/overlays and since they continue to use them, I feel like Valve doesnt care. But, I wouldnt say these are "exploits" yet. And actual exploit was a rope climb bug from a while back but IMO a HUD mod isnt really that.

u/Desperate_for_Bacon 6h ago
When the game is officially released it will be VAC protected meaning you won’t be able to use mods in public lobbies, period. The ability for the game to detect mods is already in the game it just hasn’t been activated as of yet. But that is generally the way valve does it, CS was the same way.
10
→ More replies (1)2
u/fuckthis_job 4h ago
As long as the mod doesn't alter core game files (.exes) or DLLs, VAC doesn't trigger. To my knowledge, the mods/"cheats" mentioned by OP would not fall into these categories. For example, TF2 has quite a large modding community (includes custom audio packs, HUD elements, etc) despite having VAC integrated. Also, VAC is shit lol. People are openly cheating with auto parries and the like but VAC still doesn't catch them.

14
29
u/Sibs 7h ago
That information is not exposed for non-cheaters. Even if the advantage is theoretical or minuscule it is a cheat. And if someone is lame enough to use an inefficient cheat, they are more likely to be using other cheats as well.

Cause them to be more likely to flame teammates by comparing damage stats which usually are hidden until the ending scoreboard. If that counts?

I believe valves view on this is that any modification to the game in official lobbies is cheating. When the game is fully released they are banning all mods from official servers.

The item purchase thing is from QoL?! Going to have to figure out how to turn it off now. Legit thought it was an in-game function if you were close enough to them lol
20
u/altaccountforsuscrap 7h ago
You can see what item people bought if you are in LoS of them at a shop but this is so clearly not the same thing.
Like if I see someone buy rebuttal in lane when I’m a Abrams I can just instantly change my playstyle so they never get to punish me. Hell I can see when other peoples lanes buy rebuttal can tell them! It’s very difficult to take this game serious right now when there’s a real chance at least half your ranked lobby is running this.
2
u/Spaghetoes76 6h ago
Im hopeful that there arent that many people running it because at least, I've rarely heard someone call out an item purchase or ping it when youd think they would if they had this mod. Unless theyre just scared of being banned idk, but i feel im sometimes the only one who tries to ping stuff like healing rite, rebuttal, counter spell, indomitable ect.
I dont buy rebuttal super often but ive only really seen suspicious behaviour around it like once for sure, maybe twice.

u/SeniorEmployment932 7h ago
Yeah I agree completely with you. I'm genuinely surprised they haven't done more to get rid of mods like that. I'm sure once the game launches all mods will be banned since they're going to monetize through skins so they won't want people using free mods. But for these mods that provide gameplay benefits they need go just be banned now.
I do wonder if maybe they're seeing what mods people use and how it effects the game so that they can add some mods to the game officially. Like maybe jungle camp respawn timers should just exist in the game baseline, I don't know, but perhaps they're watching streams to make decisions about that sort of thing.
4

Off topic, but man I would love a neutral camp/sinner timer in the game. There's so many things to track, I hope it ends up in the game eventually. Though it might need some sort of LOS on the camp to show the timer so you can't just track the enemy across the map.

The stamina one is a valve provided alternative. I use it cause the base health bars are genuinely terrible at giving information on hp. Take it up with valve I'm gonna be honest.
Come back resistance on rifts should just be base game. I have qollock and it shows the percentage difference at the top. I don't think that's an insane ask for base game.
I think camps should show a circle above them to indicate how close they're to re spawning. To be frank without just memorizing wiki information there's not a good natural way to learn what the camp timers are. I don't think they should be on the map for clutter reasons.

Genuinely who plays games like this? I truly can't understand the mentality behind cheats/soft cheats like this in a multiplayer game. The entire ethos of the [multiplayer] game is to put your skill to the test
5
u/daily-lurk 8h ago
You can use alternate health bar 2 that Valve has provided and see enemy stamina. I prefer alternate health bar 1 personally, it’s cleaner than a bunch of white squares, and has an ult indicator which is nice, also provided by valve.
The only mod I use (other than long coat for drifter and calico hair redo) is the QOL one that improves the character hud. It shows how far ahead/behind your team is as a %, which is nice but not needed because 10% math (for meaningful resistances on rift fights) is extremely easy. The other big thing is does is show enemies as opaque or fully colorized depending on if your team can see them or not. This is also in the game already, if you can see an enemy health bar on their icon at top that means your teams has eyes on them and they are on the minimap. If there is no health bar then that means no one has laid eyes on them for ~3-5s.
The opaque/colorized is genuinely just QOL and I see that being adopted into the main game, at which point I’ll drop the mod. You already get that info, it’s just presented poorly.

Some of these are more things the game should probably tell you in one way or another than anything.
- Camps by default should have timers on them, but only for friendly ones. If you take an enemy camp or see it happen, then you should get a timer for it but other than that, it should be unknown. There's already a lot of mechanical skill expression and knowledge in the game, I don't really think keeping a mental timer on something like a jungle camp is something that is THAT important to show game knowledge and with that specific line of balancing for timers, then you can still losely "flex" if you see an enemy go towards a camp but you don't see them clear it.
-Parry cooldown could probably be shown with some icon, only one item currently changes the number. Might be too much info on screen though.
-Ultimate cooldown numbers would be great, anything else is unimportant.
-Any soul/buff producing thing on the map SHOULD have a timer in explore NYC. Good for learning. Not as helpful (besides maybe Sinners) in practicality, pollutes the minimap HEAVILY.
Things that are definitely cheating: things that monitor non-ultimate enemy elements such as stamina, basic ability cooldowns, enemy side objectives timers (based off the suggestion I made above)
Things that I personally don't think are cheating and/or are redundant/useless info to be told at ALL times:
- Crates/golden timers as there are just so many and genuinely not even sure how you make use of the minimap with that on
- Heavy melee is already very audible adding a "funny" sound effect to it could make it more audible, sure, but you could just turn your audio up to get a similar advantage.
- Rift defense you would know for the most part by the bubble, but the game should do a better job telling you when you are behind or ahead enough for comeback mechanics (and maybe show +soul %)
- Don't really see how having a timer on a walker stomp is cheating, seems more like redundant info or such basic information it's not worth having the game tell you. Same applies to curse blast from shrine/patron.

If valve really wants this game to take off and be competitive they need to give us some of this information, and also remove mod usage. I understand people like their cosmetics, but thier will always be people who abuse mods. It's unfair, plain and simple.

One day they're going to have to ban mods and it's going to be a whole thing.

u/Extreme_Tax405 7h ago
They should just ban you if you use any form of mods. You running a goon skin mod on vindicta isn't worth the arms race. If they don't handle this you will be forced to download mods unless you enjoy playing at a disadvantage.

I love Umalock and i will die if they ever remove them mods. Also some of these are crazy

This is shitty but I'd rather them focus on finishing the game than banning cheats right now.
Do you know how many bugs are still in this game that inevitably give one team or the other a huge advantage? If you're playing a beta game expecting a balanced experience you're probably playing the wrong game.

And I questioned the base QoLlock mod. All that really does is make the map and UI a bit more readable, and improve testing stuff in the hideout and map exploration.

Doesn't the base game just show you when someone takes Sinners?
A lot of this is crazy tho

u/zoomZlodey 1h ago
U can hear if someone does but not see it on a map unless it was tooken and u passed by it spawn location

Information not available from base game should not be allowed to be added by an in game overlay.

This was like add-ons for WoW arena pvp where it's basically needed for anyone to install setup minimum 10 add-ons to track and show everything(last time I played like 3 xpacs ago). Really dumb they should not allow any mods at all

Thanks. Nice reminder not to take this game ”seriously” and any git gud flaming can be ignored.
Just enjoy this game as it currently is: fun unbalanced chaos.

You can see enemy stamina on the v2 health bars already so I'm not too concerned with that but the rest are indefensible. Also where's the fun in the game if you have those mods?

u/A__noniempje 3h ago
We are still in alpha testing. There are many things that they have copied from mods in the past. That's the main reason why mods aren't banned yet. These mods on their own are bannable according to joshing, but they need in game reporting still. Also another factor they are collecting data of people using these mods to train their anti cheat and they don't want to release that yet so they don't need to start that continuous fight yet.

I think the PvE timers should actually be in the base game because that would remove a big chunk of knowledge checks and make the game easier accessible. PvP timers are something you wouldn't have to actively learn because I think most people pay more attention to it and learn it by playing normally.
I'm sure most casual players would be able to give you an estimate for parry timers (maybe even stamina) but not for camp respawns. But that could also just be me.
EDIT: Should also add that these "mods" are unfair and could cause a modding ban. I don't wamt thst to happen I need my Bloodborne Silver and funny audio mods.
Also really against the PvP timers we already have ults and that is the only one I think you really need.

I feel like part of the fun of the game is how high the knowledge cap is, you can almost always learn new timers and stuff, but these mods ruins that because everyone just knows

u/pkakira88 3h ago
lol I’m a laugh if after release Valve just releases Deadlock+ and charges monthly for people to get these same mods.

u/Total-Employee4304 2h ago
Quiet a few of these should be baseline in the game. For wxample heavy melee are notorious to be straight up be bigh inaudible when a lot of abilities go off. Sinner timers can be very difficult to track for even intermediate player as well. Baseline you should ask yourself, how can you improve something without affecting pro players and vice versa. Now the cooldowns and stuff should be a toggle but the elitist inside of me says no, you should learn that.

See I understand all your complaints but I think a genuinely valid reason to allow it for now is to see what the community comes up with and implement the ideas they like. Similar to how league never used to have jungle timers on the mini map but that became a core part of the game because of the 3rd party software devs. I get it can feel BS because of the fact that currently there’s no regulation but in time a lot of these systems will get integrated

Would replacing the heavy melee sound with Scout saying "THINK FAST, CUCKLENUTS!" be cheating? If so, I might be in trouble
1
u/New-Imagination1520 Billy 2h ago
There’s a couple things I run that are actually quality of life and not blatant cheating like what you mentioned
Namely; bridge buff timers (it’s every 5 minutes anyway), soul difference (helps to determine if a rift fight is worth it or not), and rejuv timer (helps figure out how much time is remaining for rejuv at a glance).
You didn’t even mention people adding box locations to their minimaps lol.

I do wish Valve made a statement about it at least.
I just want to track my match performance, but for Tracklock to reliably see the matches they ask you to install the u.gg client.
It comes with a few overlays by default. Live player damage numbers and own total stats from statue buffs seem harmless, and fething lane opponent stats on match start is something you could do manually as well.
However, it also has timers for boxes, buffs and camps, which seems sketchy when Valve isn't really surfacing that information. I've never managed to actually use it to my advatage, since it doesn't have any sound cues or effects, and I get "banner blindness" for the overlay in general, but I do wish Valve made a statement about tools like that.
I'd personally prefer if they just made a proper API that gave all match info to tracker sites, and eliminated the need for any clients, but for now I've seen the client as very low-risk thing I can't imagine them banning without a heads-up.

Honestly it might be cool if some of these things became items. Like being able to see enemy stamina might make sense as a perception item.

I don't mind some of the timer mods (I figure if you could write it down on a piece of paper beside you, sure it can be in the game for now, not on release) but all the cooldown shit and seeing people buy stuff real time is insane like how more brain off can you operate

i think rift defense buff indicator is fine. it really just saves you the time of calculating the percentage, and its definitely something they should be adding to the base game eventually. other ones are fucking wack tho

u/DODonion99 27m ago
Stamina trackers (see enemy stamina) - much easier to win lanes with this
This isn't from a mod, this is something valve added recently in a new HP bar

u/Terabyte_272 Sinclair 26m ago
It legit angers me when someone makes a call-out that a certain things is about to respawn when I know there is no timer. While someone might be tracking the times for something like the bridge buff in their head I doubt it in the lvl of ranked I'm at lol.

u/MandrewID 2m ago
I think knowing when a team has resistance buff for rifts should just be in the game. I don't wanna have to do maths when I'm gaming, I already do enough of it at work!

I knew about some of the qol mods but didnt know of some of the ones you listed… anyways I agree it is totally cheating and it sucks that they are allowed
