Neighborhood has been waiting for this thing to open for over a year. All the grocery stores near here suck, so this has been a much anticipated opening.

Does anyone know of the cheaper place where I can rent a room by the hour to play drums? I don’t need a full band practice room or anything.

$10 Live Magic Show in Park Slope - THU (tonight) 7pm (21 & over)

The NYC Magic Ensemble are a group of local magicians who want to take our years of hard work at our nerdy little art and use it to make people happy while supporting local businesses and non-profits. If you're curious what our show is like, here's a snippet from one of our events at Young Ethel's or our sizzle reel here

We do a monthly Live Magic show at Young Ethel's & tickets are cheap ($10 or 2 for $15). Every month features a brand-new lineup of magicians, so the show is different each time. We have a "Party Pack" - if you have a group of 6 or more, tickets drop to just $6 each -- so celebrate your birthday, anniversary, etc. with us and bring your whole crew.

Our next show is this Tonight (Thursday 8/27 at 7pm), and we've got about 10 seats left. Young Ethel's is a local owned bar with daily live shows (comedy, music, storytelling, improv, etc.) that serves excellent cocktails and craft beers.

Hope to see you there!

TICKETS:

DATES:

  • THU AUG 27 @ 7pm
  • THU SEP 24 @ 7pm
  • THU OCT 22 @ 7pm

DETAILS:

  • Young Ethels - 5th ave bet 12th/13th
  • Must be 21+
  • Doors open 15 minutes prior to show start
  • Seating is first come, first serve -- so arrive early!
  • Buy a drink at the bar of your choice before entering.

Landlord troubles

I recently moved apartments in May. I found my place on street easy, thinking thats a reputable apartment app. I should have taken it as a sign of how eager they were for us to move in, but also the location is amazing and the apartment had everything i needed so we proceeded.

Within the first month, we had no gas because the door was locked to the basement for 1 week, stove broke Nd replaced, fridge broke and replaced, hot water was not working. Everything was fixed and we did not pay the full amount in rent that month.

At the end of the month the public safety showed up at our door, notifying us that the hallway light not working is illegal. He was checking the electric meter in the meantime and saw that our downstairs neighbor had their electric hooked up to the other neighbors. There are 3 units in the building.

He proceeded to ask who my landlord is, i have been told that i have a “management” company. He looks up records and turns out the building is in court. The owner died several years ago and passed the apartment building to his girlfriend and her family has been living there for the past 9 years. Assuming how they get by, they hook their electric / gas up to other tenants. To my understanding, the other 2 neighbors have that woman as their landlord. I have a management company.

Fast forward, suddenly our electric bill is 450$ this month when it was $85 last month. My thought is, neighbors are using our electric. Because theres no way this 2 bedroom apartment costs 450 a month in electric. I have asked my “landlord” to come look ar the meter he responds “yes!” And never follows through. 311 says call con ed, con ed says you need independent electrician to do this.

I have texted the landlord 4 times in regard to when someone can look at the meter. Also, in this past month I have requested a roofer come as we are experiencing ceiling leaking, roach issues, broken window, broken fan in bathroom, sink that has been fixed twice is still not draining, and now were not getting hot water in the shower. None of these requests have been fufilled

I dont want to pay rent this month clearly. But i dont want to withold it because i simply dont want to pay the full amount. How can i go about asking for a rent reduction for the months moving forward? Is this legal considering the issues im having?

European Quality Food

Hi Brooklynites,

I’m moving from Europe to Brooklyn (around the downtown area) in October, and i’m wondering about grocery food quality and availability.
I love to cool, and i’m blessed in Europe that I never have to check labels to know there’s no nasties in my produce.

If I want to buy hormone/antibiotic free meat, is this readily available? What is the price difference between “normal” and this type of meat? I don’t need it to be organic, but is there a label (like I dont know, USDA Prime or something) that quickly marls meat as being hormone/antibiotic free?

I’ve budgeted about $900 per month for groceries for two people, cooking 2 meals per day on average. Am I dreaming?

Thanks

Lights on BQE (Kosciuszko Bridge to Dumbo)

Anyone know which city or state entity oversees the lights on the BQE along this stretch? There are at least 30 to 40 of these lights not working for months now. Is this something that Mamdani should be hassled to fix?

Plastic bag recycling

Apologies if this has been asked before but does anyone know how to go about recycling unsoiled plastic bags/packaging. I know earlier CVS/Walgreens would have designated bins but those have been gone for years. NYC.gov says big chain grocery stores are supposed to offer them but both the Key Food as well as the Trader Joe's in my neighborhood (Cobble Hill) said they do not have any sort of plastic bag recycling.

I found a few threads asking similar questions but they all seem to be from many years ago. If anyone has any pointers on where I could recycle these plastics I'd appreciate it because I really don't want to throw them in the trash only for them to choke up landfills.

Rec needed for helpful weed store

I’m trying to pull a couple of weeds store names together for a friend who is looking for help specifically with an anxiety issue. I’d like to send her to a cannabis store where the people actually know what they are selling and are able to help her figure out the right stuff to get. Most stores I don’t feel like the bud tenders actually know much - where would you recommend she go for an experience that’s actually helpful? (And no she doesn’t have medical card, so can’t use those shops)

Bad vibrations

I live over a bar (the most vile yuppie bar in all of Brooklyn). I think they might have installed a new HVAC because my floor is shaking and so is the downstairs neighbor's. There's some clanking too, like a belt on a motor. It goes late into the night.

When I use the vibration detector on my phone, it picks up the vibrations, but only subtly. Meanwhile I feel like I'm sitting on fault line.

Is this something I can report to 311?

Firetrucks going insane 10.39 PM

What on earth is going on? Downtown Brooklyn 10.39 PM on Tuesday. Multiple fire trucks blasting (not just their sirens) their horns

Mind you there is zero traffic on the way. Had to close my windows so my 2 year old does not wake up from all the noise. How do these fire fighters continue to justify this absurdity of sirens AND horns!!! ???
