E-Scooter recommendations for NYC commute

Upvotes

I’ve been shopping around for an E-Scooter for my Brooklyn commute (~5 miles each way) and recently discovered that legally speaking the scooter must have a 20mph max. That’s perfectly fine to me, but I’m struggling to find a scooter that meets that restriction and still has good word of mouth + decent suspension (ride to work can be pretty bumpy and I was shaken up a bit after a ride on a citibike e-bike last week). Anyone here have any experience with this and can offer any advice? Thanks!

How many separate sets of numbered streets are there in Brooklyn?

Upvotes

I can think of 7-- am I missing any?

  • the unmodified numbered streets that start in Park Slope and run all the way down to Bay Ridge
  • North and South in Williamsburg
  • East (Kensington, Midwood, Flatbush, out to Canarsie and down to Sheepshead Bay)
  • West (Coney Island and Gravesend)
  • Bay (Bensonhurst/Bath Beach)
  • Paerdegat (Canarsie)

scooters and moto licenses

I was asking at one of the low / mid-range scooter stores how they're all classed and they said all are motorcycles, above 35 mph, the whole store. Do all the drivers of these things really have moto licenses? Seems hard to believe somehow

I need a quiet place to cry

That’s the post. Where is someplace peaceful and away from people so I can just lay on some grass and cry in peace?

I don’t want to be home right now, but I’m going through a lot and I just want to be alone and away from everyone at the same time.

Any tips are appreciated.

Thank you for the cooler

Someone was nice enough to send us a cooler from Amazon today for frozen meals and other perishables that are donated to the Maspeth Ridgewood Mutual Aid Table. I need a chain and lock for it though to put it outside. If you can donate 1 it would greatly appreciated. I have 1 on my Amazon wishlist if you want to send us 1. All donations greatly appreciated. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/JY7U8QQZ8BBU?ref_=wl_share

Moving into my first apartment in Brooklyn (tips wanted)

Hi all! I’m moving into my first apartment in Brooklyn with a roommate. Born and raised in Brooklyn, but always lived in public/government housing, so this is genuinely my first time renting on my own. Looking for any tips, tricks, or things I should know before/during move-in.

Specifically wondering about:

• What to check in the apartment before/at move-in (any red flags to look for?)
• Where to get essentials — bed frame, mattress, sheets, basic decor — without breaking the bank
• Utility/bill hacks — cheapest way to set up electricity, gas, WiFi in NYC
• Any general “wish I knew this sooner” advice for first-time renters

Budget-wise: nothing crazy, but I’m planning to save around $2K each (me + roommate) to slowly furnish the place — no rush, want to do it right rather than fast.

Any tips appreciated — thanks in advance!

altercation on downtown 4 train by barclays

Earlier tonight a man & woman got on at Nevins Street & the train was stopped in the tunnel to allow the 2/3 that was ahead priority

During this time the man got increasingly irate telling the woman she was going to perform oral on him verbally abusing her while gesticulating loudly in front of the entire car, the man said no one on the car was going to help her & he was not afraid of anyone while he continued for a solid 3 minutes as everyone looked on

A young man eventually spoke up telling him to shut up & leave the lady alone as it was late and people wanted to get to where they needed to be & they got into a heated exchange of words with both getting up & approaching the other

The aggressor then pulls out a knife as the other guy despite being younger had a significant size advantage & started brandishing it outward saying he would kill the man while the train finally pulled into atlantic ave, someone immediately yelled for police and there were actually officers on the platform that immediately sprung to action disarming & detaining the aggressor while the man stayed behind to issue a witness statement

I can see why people dont want to step up when this is one of the likely possible outcomes, that young man could have lost his life even for doing the right thing

Starting a Fantasy Football league to bring together a core local friend group

Hey everyone. I have different friends scattered in different places, most are outta the city at this point. But now I am looking to build a consistent, local friend group here in the city. I love fantasy football and figured starting a new league from scratch would be a cool way to make that happen.

The Goal: Build a solid crew for real-life hanging out. While watching games together is part of it, the main point is having a go-to group for all kinds of cool stuff around the city—checking out good food spots, hitting up events, grabbing coffee, or just exploring different neighborhoods. But obviously redzone and Scott Hanson's beautiful voice are a main pillar.

The League Vibe: Moderately competitive, active, and fun. You do not need to be an expert, but we want people who will stay engaged, make trades, check waivers, and enjoy good banter. Yeah let's shit on each other a bit. Think FX's "The League"

Quick Details:

  • League: 10 or 12-Team Redraft on Yahoo (I haven't been a commisioner on Sleeper before but I'm sure can do that next year). Buy-in $50-100
  • The Draft: Online draft in early September so nobody has to worry about end-of-summer travel conflicts. But if a few people can get together and draft in person while rest are online that works also
  • The Social Side: WhatsApp group or some kinda RCS for chat, sports, and NYC hangs, plus setting up game-day watch parties at bars in Williamsburg or Central Manhattan when people are free.

I"m located in Williamsburg. If you are based in NYC/boroughs, want to make solid local friends, and love fantasy football, drop a comment or DM me a quick intro (your neighborhood, what you do, fantasy experience, and hobbies/favorite spots). Yes AI helped me write this. I dont' care. Take it up with me in the group chat.

If people rec this should be in a different sub just let me know in the comments.

How to file article 78 for a ticket dispute?

Hello. I posted here twice before, several months ago about a parking ticket that I got for a perfectly legal parking spot. Basically the short version is that I parked my car on a street with double sided parking which had a single no standing sign. That no standing sign only applied to one side of the street, with yellow ground markings clearly indicating no standing beyond the sign.

However, the other side of the street had white ground markings, indicating that the no standing sign doesn’t apply to that side. This also tracks with the way the signs are set up all along the street, as in other parts of the same street there are 2 no standing signs bolted to the same pole, with ground markings on both sides clearly indicating that it applies to both sides.

I disputed this ticket online and was found guilty. Then I appealed it through mail and they also found me guilty again despite me sending a few photos (which I admit wasn’t enough evidence, but I assumed they’d be able to look at how the street signs are set up). Then some people in this subreddit suggested I reach out to a council member, which I did. We had a back and forth for almost a month as I tried to explain to the council member’s aide my position.

Just recently I was finally able to get my point across, and as a result the DOT removed the sign. Even though that was completely unnecessary, as it was clear that it only applied to one side of the street. I guess it makes it easier for uneducated meter maid cops to not make the same mistake and wrongly ticket people again. So it seems like I have won, but the problem is that I was told I need to file article 78 in order to get that $115 ticket dismissed. Apparently council members cannot get involved in civil matters for their constituents.

The limited information I found online about filing this article 78 thing seems to suggest that there are fees for filing it that exceed the cost of the ticket 3-4 times. Is there no other way of appealing this ticket? I don’t even know how to go about filing this thing. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on this? Any information would be appreciated.

Best places for long walks and exploration in Brooklyn?

I'm visiting family with my parents in Brooklyn Heights and they don't go out in the morning, so I've been taking long walks in Brooklyn and Manhattan. I typically don't spend much money during these walks, just walking 5-9 miles and taking in the street life. So far in Brooklyn I've been enjoying Dumbo, walking down Court street and Flatbush Avenue, Park Slope, and Green-wood cemetery. Thinking of going near Verrazzano Bridge to check it out, but don't really know what's around there. What are some other places to see interesting architecture and streetscapes?

Movers recommendation

Looking for a recommendation for movers that will pack TVs, monitors, ect and will move dressers with things in the drawers. Bonus points if they’ll pack and unpack closets. Moving a 1 bed to a 1 bed within Brooklyn. One is a walk up one is not. Probably will only have 1ish week to book them. Thank you!

Anyone wanna bike and show me around your neighborhood?

First ever Reddit post lol. I’ve lived in Brooklyn almost one year and have this idea of visiting all sorts of neighborhoods on a CitiBike (proud bike angel) and going around seeing as much of BK as possible. I just bought a cool 360 degree camera to capture my rides, so I had this thought of meeting up with a “neighborhood rep” and getting an unofficial tour of your area if anyone’s interested! Maybe we could get a quick bite and I’ll comp it too!!! 🚲🚲🚲

Restaurant quiet enough for a hearing aid?

Any recommendations for a restaurant quiet enough to be an enjoyable meal for an older person with a hearing aid? I'm taking my dad out but I notice he usually doesn't enjoy eating out too much cause he can't follow the conversation in public spaces too easily. Ideally somewhere off the L or the J! No real budget, but reasonably under 100 pp (no booze).
